I got one for you Matt. Five or six years ago my fishing buddy decided to get into bait casters. I had to tell him that TREE BASS were extinct & to quit throwing his baits "UP" in the trees! At that point I mastered using the boat hook to pull down the limbs. Yes I taught him to cast, an old spook without hooks was a great aid. But he had me rolling at times! He's every bit as good as I am nowadays. But your 💯 percent correct about putting baits where no one else will. And I also have a homemade plug knocker on the boat. Our best fish come out of tree roots.
Matt, I find that the last method, with the heavy lure retriever, works best for large baits if you are directly over your stuck lure, especially if the retrieval weight doesn’t knock your lure free on first contact. To that end, I keep some of my weighted lure retrievers wrapped around marker buoys, the kind that only unwind to the depth achieved by the retrieval weight. Tossing these overboard after connecting the weight to your taught fishing line causes the buoys to position themselves nearly directly above your snagged lure, speeding the retrieval process by quickly allowing VERTICAL knocks of the weight against the snagged lure. For smaller lures, I sometimes send down a 4 Oz weight attached only to my fishing line with a snap, with no other line attached to the retrieval weight. For musky fishing in flooded timber, I always carry an adjustable length pole.
I’ve lost tackle and had countless frustrating moments, but trying to put my bait in the thick of the junk where there’s a higher chance of snagging has caught me so many fish and forced me to get better at casting. This was a key piece of the puzzle for me as novice angler(arguably I’m still a novice, haha) Great tips as always
I agree 110% with your 4 tricks, but I have a 5th trick I use before going to the lure retriever. I have some cheap homemade saltwater style pyramid lead sinkers and some old crappy snap swivels. I used some old used braided line to tie the swivel side of the snap swivel to the sinker. When I hang up my crankbait I just snap the sinker onto my line and send it down. It knocks the crankbait loose most of the time. Maybe a gentle jig or 2 and if that doesn’t work then I’ll go for the real plug knocker on a string like you have. Old timers did this with old spark plugs. Good fishing!
That is a great topic that I've never heard anyone else talk about. I've become pretty prolific at getting snags out. In a video once I seen you do the slingshot and use your Rod to get your bait unsnagged. I wondered how that works. Man I love the cutoff rod and reel to use for your snag remover. I found the snag remover that I wanted bought one and upon the first time using it fired it down my line just to have to break off my line lose my lure and my new retriever Good stuff matt! Ps figured out why the livescope on my new boat isn't working. I'm pretty pumped to hopefully get to try it out tomorrow
Good tips Matt and I’ve used 3 of them before but the sling shot I don’t use even though I was aware of it cause to me no lure is worth risking a $3-400 rod outfit.
Thanks for sharing those retrieving tricks!! Like the Lure retriever. I did the same with an old rod but I seen something to put on the end. Yes a rod tip!!! Great job Matt!!Stay Safe & God Bless!!!!
Thanks for the tips. I've never seen the slingshot technic before but I switched to heavy braid with wire hooks and break away Sinkers. The last time I was hung I got my jig head back minus the hook. Thanks you may have gotten me to try new things
Great tips! Two questions I’m still left with: 1. What is your homemade lure knocker made of? 2. Any tricks for getting unstuck in rock? (Like when a ned or maybe hover rig gets caught in river rock?)
One trick I use if it's really stuck is 2 1/2 oz dropshot wieghts on a snap put the snap on the line and send it down. Just like your lure retriever. Curious on your design.
Thanks for the techniques. I use the loop method the most, but I never thought about making a bigger loop and fishing it back toward me. Now, help me with the tree bass. 😜
I always find these videos super helpful, as their real life situations that happen on the water and for us. Non-professionals who may not get any discounts from our lure manufacturer, losing dates is painful, so anything we can do to free them up and get them back is always a worthwhile investment.
Matt, I never “send” my rod, in your example the bait was shallow, but in water deeper than 7 feet, that is truly risky business, water logging your 250-300 dollar reel and risking damaging the rod tip is not worth a 6-10 dollar bait. Like your other suggestions, also consider old spark plugs as retrievers as well.
Its the risk/reward ratio. I have put my rod in the water to get my bait out from less than 7 feet of wateruse it like a harpoon. Also, carry a bait retriever extender from BassPro for $25-30 dollars
Reels can get wet I’d be more worried about the rod tip but most rods have warranty s nowadays , it’s all part of the game like Matt said if your not getting stuck your not fishing in the juice
@@everythingoutdoors-vl9bl I would recommend after sending your rod to at a minimum lubricate the reel, there are implications for shielded bearings and drag washers
The cast where you think “that’s a bad idea.” Is the best cast to make. The number 1 rule or fishing, is fish where the fish are. They are right up where you’re going to lose a bait. Risk it for the biscuit. Lol
Hey Matt , if you ever decide to make more MHX rods , I would like to order 3 right away ; Spinnerbait blank 1/4oz to 1/2 oz start as far as weight , Texas rig style blank 1/8oz to 1/2 oz , Frog rod , all 7 ft and over , I do not want to go over 7ft 6 inch in length , oh and as far as spinnerbait , 7 ft to 7ft 3 inch no longer , I’m sorry if I’m aggravating you still , I do not mean to
Use the ol' hound dog with better success over a money pole lately. If fishing from shore it's a toss up cause you are at a flat angle for the hound dog and also maybe too far and deep to use a money pole.
I hate it. Every aspect of it. I’ve been a big MLF guy since it’s birth, conservation is very important to me. I think this may ruin them. Everyone knows profession anglers need to get paid more. It’s sad that payouts today aren’t even half what they were 20 years ago. And they are going to cut payouts by a million!? It’s a business and they need to do what they need to do to survive but taking money from payouts is not the way. I’m sure there are at least 10 dudes on the admin side getting paid wayyyyy too much. Need to take the money from them. This is BS. Going to bring a lot of fans back to Bass for their primary group
🍺Thanks Matt. Good straightforward video with on the water examples👍.
Glad it was helpful!

I have been waiting for you to do this video! Thanks!

Never really tried the slingshot but I know a bunch of people do and its one way Im going to start using, thanks for trying to save us some money!!!
awesome!
Learned something today, thank you so much!!

Thanks man. I go on lots of “rescue missions” trying to get it baits back, primarily crank baits. Can’t wait to try some of these.
Good luck!

I just really like the action on those rods you are fishing
me too!
My buddy made me some, like a 3 ounce egg sinker on a heavy duty paper clip, slip on the line and let it fall.
Sounds good

Glad you like them!
Great tips! Two questions I’m still left with: 1. What is your homemade lure knocker made of? 2. Any tricks for getting unstuck in rock? (Like when a ned or maybe hover rig gets caught in river rock?)
Best bet for rock is to go to the other side of the snag and pull from other directions. My lure knocked is a bunch of binder o rings

This is great. That slingshot method, releasing the rod, is a new one to me. I'm almost afraid to try that one!
You can do it!
Those are all good ways to retrieve snagged lures. I’ve been using them for years.
awesome!
This video is gold. Not slingshotting any of my rods though.

Yo matt are u still doing the personal lake map breakdowns?
not at the moment but i do one on one virtual lessons through fish the moment
@@MattStefanFishing ok cool I may have to look into that
I keep a lure knocker in the kayak at all times. It's knocked out & freed so many swimbaits & other baits. Its paid for itself over & over.
sounds good!
Always been my motto no lure left behind 👍
Right on
What pound line do you use on your lure retriever?
80 lb braid
if you're not snagging, you're not catching the good ones. FACTS!
agreed
Making your own baits takes a lot of the anxiety off in many ways. Not just in saving money, but you also increase your options.

You said that rod manufacturers don't recommend the slingshot tech but they shore do like it when it goes bad.
haha

I prefer to store all my lures stuck in logs and in the rocks at the bottom of the lake.
haha
I just use 150 lb. Braid and pull the whole thing in
haha

No slingshot method for me. Replacing tips is more annoying than losing lures.

If you don’t throw your bait into the thick stuff and lose baits you can’t ever buy any new ones …

I get stuck more from land. Plastics I don't care for.
