  • An update/review of my Rossi R92 in .357 - not perfect, but one of my favorites!
I also share some thoughts on the application of a levergun in .357 Magnum as a general purpose defensive tool, especially for folks living in restricted states.
My R92 has held up well over about 1000 rounds of mostly .357. It is fun to shoot, and not too expensive! Thanks for stopping by.

I love my Rossi Model 92 in 357 magnum. It’s got the 16” barrel. I actually just did a video on why it’s what I call my 3 purpose carbine. It’s killed deer for me, I plink with it all the time, and I use it for home defense with 125 grain semi jacketed hollow point 357 ammo. This was a great video by the way. Thanks for showing some love for the Rossi lever guns!

Thanks Bubba, I'm a little more of plinker/Target shooter and my .357 Rossi is set up with a tang mounted peep sight. I've got to enthusiastically agree with everything you said about these guns in terms of practical functionality. Very realistic assessment of their potential for defense. Well thought out and articulated!

Try a small dab of blue loc-tite on the action screws. Blue is Non-permanent and those screws will stay put until you take them back out. RED loc-tite is permanent so dont use it. I usually place a drop on a plastic playing card then gently dip one side of the screw into the loctite bead. It controls over application and keeps it cleaner than dropping it directly on the screw.
My 16" Rossi really ups the performance of my reloads. I chronographed my loads in my Ruger GP100 and the Rossi. I get 1400 f/s in the handgun and 1850 f/s in the rifle. That is a big step up in performance. I bet I could nip at 2000 f/s with the 20 or 24" Rossi.

Clear fingernail polish works best for those that aren’t familiar with how loctite interacts with gun screws.

@@BlackKnight-ll8qh I am using 158gr XTP bullets with Federal brass and Fed 200 magnum small pistol primers. I am loading 17gr of H110 powder. I cant remember overall length (OAL) but it was most likely saami book length as any levergun can be sensitive to shorter than normal OAL and pressure would be higher if loaded shorter.

I've been a gun owner and shooter for a while now and even carry a gun for work. Having studied the topic for many years I have come to the same conclusion you have in regards to long arms. The AR15 simply is the best tool for defending your home, but when that isn't an option a lever action rifle or pump action shotgun is still an excellent and underrated tool for the job. You're unlikely to have to deal with even 2 or 3 intruders and they're almost always going to retreat as soon as they realize you're armed with a gun. And that's if they're crazy enough to even try breaking in when you're likely to be at home and don't leave as soon as they realize you're awake. A good lever action is more than capable of handling even outlier situations a person might find themselves in.

I own two Henry's, the Model 001 .22, for about four years, then I got the Henry Big Boy 357mag/38 special in brass, with the octagon barrel this summer. Both great rifles ... though the ultimate defense/offensive may not be a lever gun, for just straight up home defense, they are very good choice. I have the Big Boy within 3-5 seconds of reach, with ten rounds of 357 mag, and it only requires simple levering to be ready to go. And conversely, it's all but impossible to get rounds from the loading tube, to the chamber without the levering action, so it's very safe to store as a loaded weapon. No fussing with safeties, or clips. And as you mention, pistol rounds out of long barrel rifles have more muzzle velocity.

I have a 16" Rossi in .357. Gotta say, of my 40 guns, it is in my top 3 favorite to use. I reload my ammo, and even with the short 16" barrel, I get 1875fps with H110 powder and 158gr soft point bullets. I changed the rear buckhorn sight (I cant hit the broad-side of a Zeppelin with these sights) to a skinner small aperature peep sight. The front sight worked with my high-speed reloads so I didn't change it. The loading gate is smooth and I have ONLY HAD ONE missfeed on over 1100 rounds. (A too short .38 special that slipped through my Q.C. checks)
I use this as a camp gun for bears. It is kept in a central place for all to use. Everyone gets a tutorial when they come, and most are marksmen with it after 6-8 shots) My gas-checked hard-cast bullets are nasty bear medicine at close range.

I changed my follower out with a stainless one. And I hate the add-on safety so I traded it out for a button. Mine is a recent purchase and is blued, 20" and chambered in 45 Colt. The R92 is very robust and can easily handle "Ruger Blackhawk" level plus P loads, easily making the 45 Colt more than a match of the 44 Magnum. Actually, with the heaviest bullets, it's more. But really, a 250 grain Keith bullet is plenty for anything you would need to use it on short of brown bear of something like that - which we don't have here in Texas. I actually got mine for cowboy action shooting so mine will mostly be eating mild loads.

I have the same in 16” stainless. A few things from a developing gunsmith, first, use poly pads and lap the chamber and bore. Learn how from Nathan Foster from Terminal Ballistics Research. Second, use clear fingernail polish, just a dab on the end of the threads as the perfect loctite to keep screws from loosening.
Also, look up Steve’s Gunz for tear down and upgrades specifically to this rifle. Older models have better stock inletting, but poorer internals. New models have better mechanicals, but worse inletting.
Try 125gr XTP’s over 7.9gr of W231 for very accurate loads. I can cover 3 shots with a quarter. That’s damn good for a lever gun that is considered 2-4 MOA.

Thanks for the video. Also, thanks for your candor and being a “regular guy” and not a “subject matter expert”! LOL. I hate the word “expert”. Just what is an “expert”? I’m no firearms “expert”, but I have been a lever gun shooter, exclusively for my long arms, for 40+ years. As a result, a straight stock lever gun is like an extension of my arms and eyes. I shoot a lever gun instinctively. I am well aware of its limitations if I were to be opposed to one armed with a high capacity centerfire rifle like an AR, AK, or SKS. However, my first shot off hand, I can hit my target in a hurry and most dependably with a lever gun. It’s because it’s like a part of me. So, unless, like you stated, I’m not up against a squad of paratroopers that invaded my property, my always in-reach long arm is my 1939 vintage Winchester 1894 30-30. It’s backup is a Rossi 44mag. My eyes are getting old and I’m on to trifocals, so I’ve been entertaining the idea of putting a red dot on my Rossi. Your comments regarding such makes me look for the lowest possible solution. Regards!

Look at the Citadel lever guns, they are the same gun, but with a threaded barrel, MLock hand guard and synthetic stock. I think Rossi is the manufacturer of it.
As far as speed of shots, while there is no way it will match a semiautomatic, watch some of the more serious cowboy action shooter’s, and I think you will be surprised how fast follow up shots can be made with a lever gun with practice.
As far as capacity goes, you have enough rounds to handle most home/personal defense situations in a civilian setting.

A lot (I didn't say all) of .38 Special ammo is barely OK for self-defense shot out of revolvers. The 16" barrel can add enough FPS to make them more effective. Of course .38 Special fired through a .357/.38 lever gun should be thoroughly tested for feeding issues.

I didn't know you could mount an optics rail. I may have to nab one on gunbroker in 454 casull for a small fortune. Seems citadel isn't making the levtac 92 454 after all. I need a red dot mounted for these aging eyes, so a rossi may be the ticket.

I am trying to get taures to make a 357 judge rifle on there 8 shot 357 handgun.
I think it would make a good ban state gun.
It should be a bit faster to shoot. But reload with a speed loader would make for a faster reload.

@@johnspruit7296 well that was my pitch to them that it would be ok in most ban states. And if they put prices of rail under the barrel and on top.
A dubble action for the first 8 shots should be as fast as any simauto.
And it would make a good night hog rifle to.

If I had to choose between my R92 and my AR, I'd choose my levergun hands down. I handload 357 and 38sp and prefer wheelguns for ccw, so there's that. But it's also just way more fun to shoot. The AR is easy mode and boring, so I never shoot it. And I think the best gun to have in a fight is probably going to be the one you've practiced with the most. That's a wheelgun, lever action, and shotgun for me. But it's completely BS that you can't own an AR and I hope that changes soon.
Check out Brass Stacker if you want a nice sling. Not tactical but pretty.

@@bubbafudd I'm totally with you on using the 158 JSPs in a rifle.
The XTPs open up too fast and end up with shallow penetration especially when you load them hot.
I think the FTX loadings are a little too mild. Getting around 1700ish FPS with a 140gr bullet.
The Federal American Eagle 158gr JSPs are a good choice from the gel tests I've seen.
I reload Hornady FP XTPs which have a smaller HP and protected tip and were designed for hunting with higher velocities. Theyll handle impacts up past 1800 fps without blowing up.
      Keep up the good work!

You say it pales in comparison with an ar or ak… you know what pales in comparison to either of those guns? A well trained/calculated individual with a Rossi r92 that shoots it all the time and knows it inside out. You put that gun in the hands of Jerry Miculek the other guy is probably going to have a pretty bad day no matter what he has .
