  • Initial summary and review of my time so far with the Rossi R92 in .357 Magnum. A very fun carbine that seems to be of decent quality.
Looking forward to continuing wringing it out over the coming months and seeing if it can be improved on.
A pistol caliber carbine has a lot of utility IMO, especially in a versatile cartridge like .357 mag.

@@neeko7878 no, it’s arguably safer. For one thing, you don’t want to use pointed/round nose on a lever action, so you are using a flat or hollowpoint contact against the primer. As for it being arguably safer, when people push in with their fingers, the tend to try to force in with speed.

Good video...i plan on buying one 20 inch barrel to deer hunt with....the 158 grain bullet about 2200 fps.... plenty of power out to about 175 yards.... people don't realize the velocity of a 357 round from a rifle increases a lot and much more punch....

I have a pre safety Rossi 357 carbine, with a steel follower, and it's been an awesome little workhorse for me. The action was a little rough out of the box, but it's slicked up nicely with use. My rifle is surprisingly accurate, and I've fitted a Williams peep sight to it, which also aids my old eyes! All in all, this little rifle has been reliable, functional, and very easy to carry. It packs a serious enough punch for home defense, and has proven to be excellent value for money little rifle. Greeting from South Africa!

I bought one 7 years ago for $450 (new). I smoothed the loading gate with a file and emery cloth, then cut about 3" off of the spring. The stock sight is fine up to 50 yards off hand. It is a fine little shooter and never had a malfunction with either .38 or .357 (factory & reloads). It is nearly as accurate as the 20" Henry Steel I bought a year later for $650 (new). I prefer the Henry loading tube for its easy of loading and unloading. The little Rossi lays behind the back seat of my truck and I would bet my life on it - as I would the Henry.

It's 8 years later now and Rossi may have improved the loading gate and the magazine spring tension.
However, if there is say only a 3 or $400 difference between the Rossi and the Henry Steel, go with the Henry.
The Henry on balance is of higher quality and now has both a side loading gate and a tube loading gate.

I have one in 357 and 20” barrel. Absolutely love it. There is definitely a break-in period. Shoots and cycles well. For best results, use full metal jacket semiwads or jacketed hollows will work best. The lead of softpoints can sometimes get a little sticky in cycling...not a big problem but occasionally pops up especially with 38s.

I have the Rossi 92 stainless octagon barrel and had some of the same issues you discussed. After shooting it many times the action was smooth and I decided to smooth out the loading gate using some sand paper which worked well. My version had Brazilian walnut also but looked very Orange so I decided to take a change and refinish it. I started sanding to get better fit and then began to destress and stain, I was not satisfied so I began using a torch to char the wood. That worked really well, after burning the stock and forward I used wood paste wax and buffed the wax in several times. It turned out really nice and thought I would let you know what I tried in case you decide to change it up, go for it, you will really be happy you did. It makes it much more personal and a one of a kind.

Nice overview. I’ve owned one (20” .357) for six or seven years now and love it. I like to “fix” stock rifles so I encourage you to do the same. The peep available from Steve’s Guns is great. It is functional and gets rid of that stupid bolt safety all at once. I replaced the front sight with a Marble’s of the same height but smaller (1/16”) bead. You’ll be impressed with the accuracy capability of this rifle. The 1:30” twist is about perfect for most .38 or .357 bullets I hand load and have to admit it outshoots my Marlin 1894 with a 1:16” twist. Go nuts, polish the internals, including the sear and trigger and shim up the spring. This work makes the action able to be cycled with a single finger and the trigger went from 6lbs or so down to an excellent 2.5lbs. Might as well try your hand at refinishing the stock too although yours looked better than the firewood clad one I received. Keep up the videos on this rifle and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Its totally worth getting the peep the fits down in the safety plug. I love mine. I use the largest peep and it makes for a fast sight and the linger site radius really helps as well. I switched to a fiber optic up front but I had to shim it to make it work since rossi used a non standard dovetail.

  • @hu3.789
    @hu3.789 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I used to own a Rossi Model 92 as described in the video. The only reason I sold it was that I preferred the Ruger bolt action 357. There are Picatinny rail mounts for the Rossi Model 92 that don't require drilling. This allows you to mount a peep sight, red dot, or scout scope. It is just a matter of personal preference. I used a 2X scout scope most often followed by the red dot. With the scout scope I was able to shoot a group about the size of my fist. The accuracy and power are sufficient to hunt medium sized game out to about 100 yards. Bullet drop will be about 3" at that distance. If I sighted in my gun at 25 yards, it would shoot a little high at 50 yards and at roughly the same point at 100 yards. (The barrel being lower than the scope, the bullet is on a slight upward trajectory at the short distance.) Past 125 yards these bullets drop quickly. 158 grain bullets are probably the best round for hunting with a 357 magnum. Typically those will come out of the muzzle at about 1600 feet per second. With hand loads using the slowest burning pistol powders, I was able to get about 2100-2200 feet per second using 125 grain bullets. 38s were quite a bit of fun plinking out to about 50 yards. The only thing I didn't like about the Rossi was the loading gate.

  • @williamcarey6592

I bought one this summer, took a while to get it.
The loading gate is a disaster it required bending the gate spring and shortening the magizine spring to make it work.
Also the inner works are rough and need cleanup, you get what you pay for.

My Japanese made (Miroku ?sp)Winchester model 1892 in 357 mag-also has a manual safety-and is only recommended for use with 357 mag cartridges-so one advantage of the Rossi R92 is it is designed for and approved for use with 38 special or 357 mag rounds. The Winchester is a beautiful gun-and very very well tooled with excellent fit, finish, and function. Rossi 92 is more of a blue collar working rifle-but I would love to add one to my collection for sake of having utility of using 38 spec rounds if needed or desired-and so as to have a gun that I dont have to worry about using as a truck gun.

I have a 24 inch octagonal barrel version of this gun in stainless and use it with home loaded .38 specials for action competitions. The heavier 24 inch octagonal gun probably soaks up more recoil than the short barrel gun but I have still managed to win a few medals with it. Although cheaper than a Marlin the gun has proven to be reliable over 15 years my only complaint would be the choice of sights. I did try a side mounted rail for a scope but I don't think that it is secure enough. I have ended up with a fold down rear peep hole sight which with my eyesight gives me a better focus on the rear buck horn but at shorter distances I fold it down to give me a quicker acquisition of the sights for competitions.

I got two for my Rossi M92s in .44 20" and a .357 just like yours (which, with a sling, I'd use a lot more often for patrolling the mountainside here). Makes all the difference in the world (I'm 70, so that's saying something). I have Skinners on my Marlin .327 and Henry SGR .22WMR . Older eyes like peeps and ghost rings, especially on rifles that a red dot or scope would be an abomination. A scoped Marlin, though, that's not so far out there, what with the solid top receiver and all.

I've got a 2007 Marlin 1894c 357. My Rossi is in 45 colt. Both are great guns. But I've got to say, I like the side eject better. That Rossi always drops spent brass right on top of my head. Gotta' wear a hat when shooting that Rossi. I don't know if my being left handed has anything to do with it or not.
That flat top Marlin lets me put a skinner aperture sight as far back as possible. Giving my 357 a longer sight radius. Loved the video even if the Algorithm didn't show it to me until a year after you posted it. Let us know what sighting system you went with. Thanks.

I did, however, experience the precise challenges posted in this vid. The loading gate was hard on the finger and the action needed smoothing out. I used the 'next bullet to load the one ahead' process but, the last round loaded was a bit 'iffy' in that it usually wound up slightly askew and wouldn't chamber initially without some fidgeting. Cycling the action needed to be deliberate and a bit aggressive. Otherwise it would not chamber the next rd. I imagine this is what people mean when referring to the action needing to be smoothed out. Despite those minor aspects, I enjoyed it - particularly the price.

I killed 2 deer with my 357 R92 this year. It'll do minute of deer to about 100 yds for me which is well within reasonable distance for the environment I hunt in. Shots were at 25 and 50 yds and blood trail was great. I'm very happy with it and it is definitely a wonderful field gun.

I have the Marlin and the loading gate is a bit of a pincher also. Try to keep your Rossi " as is ".. a saddle gun just doesn't look right with a lot of add on's. The action should smooth out for you shortly and probably be your go to plinker heading to the range. It should be a fun gun for you. Nice review.

I’ve had mine about a month or so. I’ve cut down the mag tube spring to make it easier to load, also filed the inside of the loading gate a bit. I can definitely recommend that. It’s much more pleasant to load now, and nothing like the cheese grater it felt like out of the box. It still cycles 38 and 357 well. I may get to the action at some point, but I’m not really offended by that much. I will get new sights on it, just not sure what I’ll go with at this point.

Do you have the 16" barrel version? If so, how much did you cut off the mag tube spring?

    • @PoindexterG
      @PoindexterG 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@bubbafudd I’ve got the 20”, so Im not sure how helpful my numbers are. I had read that you want about 2 - 3 more inches of spring past the end of the mag tube. That took five inches off of mine. It makes a massive difference. One side effect is that it now holds about 3/4 of a round past what it did before, and that’s just enough to get that last one jammed in the gate where you have to pry it out. I made a plug (like what you use to limit the rounds in a shotgun) to take up that space. Took some trial and error, but it runs very smooth now.

I just got a stainless one, which seems better finished than most of the reviews I read/watch online. I'm quite pleased with it so far. I must be weird but I hate peep sights, ghost rings, any kind of aperture sight and just don't shoot them for squat. The buckhorn works much better for me for irons. Shrug. I'm used to having weird tastes. ;)

Lever action will always be a go too for me. Ive own quite a bit. The 357mag is is a great lever action. You can file down the bullet fed so it wont cut your fingers putn the bullet in. You can cut the buckhorn sight with a good dremel. You can make it a nice smooth action and even sand the stock down aswell for glare.

I have had the Rossi and shoot a combination of .38 Special and .357 magnum with each loadout. I also had a little trouble feeding the ammo at the beginning, but as another viewer suggested, when I started using the next round to push in the previous round, things smoothed out quickly. I also want to put a set of either red dot or ring sights on mine as well, but have been working more hours from home, including some weekends, so I haven't made that step yet. I'm wondering if it would work well on hogs and bucks in season?

I own 7 Rossie's all you have to do is order this century spring c350 is the part # that will replace the ejector spring which is about 95% of the action smoothing and cut 1 coil off the main spring then just shoot it.

Why all the hate for the safety? You don't have to use it when carrying, but as the only way to empty the magazine is to cycle the round through the gun, being able to do that with the safety on is a plus.

My Rossi 92 stainless steel carbine is a great shooter in .45 LC. But I will tell you now, don't waist your time on lead bullets !! Something about the Rossi is they don't like lead bullets, first time out with mine it looked like a shotgun pattern ! Once I talked to the gun shop owner and switched to jackited ammo it was a tack driver !!!! I agree about the loading gate, it needs smoothing with a Dremel, otherwise a great shooter !!!!👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Mine is right on at 100 yards with the iron sights. However it does not feed my hand load semi wad cutters
But it does do well with any other hand load, ie. LRN, JHP
Mine has the marbled receiver and looks great. It’s one of my favorites to shoot.

Hey Doug , I have had many levers and am a cowboy action shooter, SWCs just don't feed properly in any tube fed lever gun, the chambering process is designed for sloped bullets and the edge on SWCs is too sharp for the ramp.

When loading the gate don't push the round all the way in everytime. Leave the rim sticking out just a little so you can use next round to push the one sticking out of the gate in. That way the only time your finger touches the sharp edge of the gate is on the last round
