To Camel I noticed 2 Things that even YOU missed that you might be interested in knowing, the first a theory, the second can be confirmed by visiting The Elder Scrolls wiki page. 1) That fanged mouth with the forked tongue on Sheogorath's regalia that you mentioned looks like some kind of biker style tattoo, seems attached to something to the right of it when viewing this video that makes it look like a creature's head, almost something Lovecraftian, could be a Hunger with their long tongues and bulbous heads, they're rather fitting of the imagery. 2) For the New Sheoth Graveyard, Bhisha actually has a 2nd possible epitaph, and is the ONLY NPC in The Shivering Isles who has more than one available to them, that reads as follows: "In memory of sweet, harmless Bhisha" that spawns on his tombstone if he is killed before or after the quest "Ushnar's Terror".
I think it could also be a reference to GOT alas a mad king stabbed in the back (im unaware if the show handles the mad kings death in the same way as the books, so i could be talking out my ass here)
The 'stab wound' on the back of his regalia could be symbolic of his betrayal at the hands of the other Daedric princes when they originally cursed him.
Interesting thought, but it wasnt exactly a "betrayal". After all, daedra arent all friends; Especially Jyggalag who was at one point the most feared daedric prince in all of creation.
You know, in Morrowind Sheogorath has the nerevarine kill a bull netch with a fork. Maybe those jellyfish like creatures or actually three bull netches.
I’m really glad to see so many people agree with you, as I also had this idea, but went to the comments to see if someone else had already posted it. Lo, and behold.
31:37 Fun fact: If you do Sheogorath's Daedric quest and do NOT have Shivering Isles installed, Sheo will have a completely different voice, as it wasn't voiced by Wes Johnson in the original game, before Shivering Isles was released. Pretty small detail that often gets missed, since Shivering Isles was out only a year after Oblivion got released. Nevertheless, there are videos on TH-cam covering Sheogorath's old voice acting if anyone is interested in hearing it.
It’s also worth noting that Sheo has different dialogue if you do his shrine after you have met him in the isles (basically chastises you for being here and not stopping the graymarch)
@@ilcorvo9559 and if youve beaten the main quest in the shivering isles, when you go to start the shrine quest you get Haskill, saying: "Praying to yourself, my Lord? That's not a good sign. Or perhaps it is. Prince of Madness, and all that. While I believe that you should be attending to your duties, it is, of course, your prerogative to spend time wherever you wish. Your predecessor did have one task He wanted performed, though He never found a mortal suited for the task."
"The Missing Pauldron" I believe actually refers to the fact that, in the base game of Morrowind (no Bloodmoon, no Tribunal), it is impossible to get a complete set of Daedric armor (without stealing). The one piece that is absent from the full set is the Daedric Left Pauldron. (could be the right, but I'm pretty sure it's the left) Because of this, unless you either kill Divaythe Fyr or (more wisely) disintegrate his armor and punch him unconscious so you can steal it off of him, it is impossible to get a full set of Daedric armor in base Morrowind due to a missing pauldron :P
Oh man I disintegrated fyr's armor and then ran away to lose aggro, came back invisible and quicksaved to pickpocket all the pieces off of him. I wonder which way was easier now, i didn't have any real hand to hand skill tho
Thanks you sooo much, Camel. You are actually the first person who got the reference with the Happiness Ring. I heard many Let's Players and friends ask why the NPC didn't just wear the ring - and hearing you say those magical words of truth just cured my own depression. As always your deep dive into The Elder Scrolls was an absolute delight and made my day all the better. Thank you for your hard work! Can't wait for the next one.
There’s a third interaction with the deadric quest. If you are in the middle of the DLC questline, sheogorath will be like “wait a minute… I know you. I gave you a task here in the isle…”
And the voice changes depending on your quest progression if you haven't entered the isles it's the base game voice if you have its sheogorath's DLC voice and after a time it's haskill I believe haskill will even call you sheogorath if you finish the questline
The bird eating the snake and dragon with snake tongue as well as the phoenix I believe has the same meaning (alternative symbols) for the endless repetition of cycles that the oraboros represents. Very fitting for the Mad God
The Shivering Isles is by far my favorite Elder Scrolls expansion. I remember the first time playing it while exploring it when I entered the city of Bliss my character which was a male khajiit just happened to be staring at a Golden Saint as the message of discovering the city which simply reads 'you found Bliss' came on the screen. My sisters found it hilarious at the timing when that message came up. Also about Sheo's regalia what appears like a wolf might not be a reference to wolves but to hyenas. What animal would Sheogorath probably love the most to have on his isle but an animal that uses maniacal laughter for communication like the hyena (he'd probably love Kookaburros too). Ironically though while we see laughter as humorous for hyenas their 'laugh' call is used to express anxiety and stress not very much for joy.
6:50 if I had to take a baseless shot in the dark, this wolfskull could symbolize The Wolf Queen. Who in her Quest for power and desire to become Empress, drove her own son, Palagious, to madness. It could be argued that Potema herself was also quite mad, or at least driven to madness by her lust for power.
I got to experience this at a young age. Its one of the best elder scrolls dlc's and I don't at all regret spending all my allowance money on it. if Bethesda came out with a remastered or remake for Oblivion I'd buy it without a doubt just for this expansion
@@kianschoeman6574 When will it be finished, approximately? I'd like to know how much time I have to put aside money and buy a decent computer. Will it alter gameplay to make it more like Oblivion too?
Wasn't it the other daedra gods that got together and forced Jyggalag to become Sheogorath? You could say that Sheogorath is the corpse of Jyggalag and the stab wound in his back is a literal interpretation of the other daedra gods stabbing him in the back.
You are not alone, as many others here, myself included, agree with you. This event you mentioned is so intrinsic to the expansion's main quest line that for me, it's hard to imagine it signifying anything else.
Yes pretty much since Jyggalag was so much stronger then the other gods they teamed up and killed him by backstabbing him Also he’s probably gonna be the main antagonist of es6 I bet
Damn, the second you said "over the hills and far away" the song started playing in my head and I knew it was going to be a reference to Nightwish, despite it being at least a decade since I last heard that song. Good band!
I think Sheogorath's dragon and snake sleeve is just a snake shedding its skin Before the Shivering isles DLC the sheogorath statue had a different voice actor which is very different from what made Sheogorath popular with the voice of Wes Johnson.
That puncture in Sheogorath's back as said before - might be symbolic to the betrayal of the other gods. Or, you know, there's a dead man at the site where you fall from great heights if you try to attack him in any way and he teleports you there. Next to this man lies a dagger, which had no apparent meaning before until you pointed this out. Food for thought, ta!
Might also be because Sheogorath is the only one allowed to have a beard in his realm, that this man got so upset by the order of shaving it that he used the same dagger to try and stab Sheogorath in the back. There's a note on his body that's labeled "Death Degree" and it states that he was punished because of trying to grow a beard. Not much else is known but I take it as open for speculation
Hey I can actually speak to the ring! When we worked on the shivering isles the script for adding and removing items already existed in the base game, but immobilization didn't. Well, at least not in an easily reversible way. A "burden" effect was unable to be used without it showing up in both the journal and the player UI, and just changing player weight up and down was buggy when we tried it. So adding and removing a ring that can't be seen was way easier than making a whole damn script from scratch for immobilization which is way more difficult than you might think. The more you know!
@@superman20029 I dare bet with 100% certainty that every single day there's a whole bunch of people who start a new playthrough. It's a great, if flawed, game. There's no wonder why there's a community that loves it with a passion.
The last part of BigHeads sneak advice is the blind man will see you. I always took that as a reference to the thieves guild quest where you encounter hard to pass Moth Priests who've been blinded by the elderscrolls.
The beast on Sheogorath’s belt is probably a reference to the in universe myth of Sheogorath winning a bet with Hircine. They both had to create beasts to do battle. Hircine creating his usually man-beasts and Sheo creating… a tiny songbird.
Could be, if I recall, Hircine specifically afflicted a Daedroth with Lycanthropy, seems like a fair possibility that the buckle is a reference to the creature and Sheogorath's victory over it with choosing a tiny songbird too small and agile for the thing to land a hit on.
@@Erock1900 It was in the book that described how Sheogorath made it his mission to piss off every other daedric prince, probably as revenge for the whole Jyggalag thing. Too bad there’s only 3 or so available to read. Bathesda (or whatever they call themselves now) really need to write the rest.
@@mondenkindqueen Right, the XVI Accords of Madness, I thought as much. I remember very much enjoying those tales. I remember the one with Hircine as well as the one with Vaermina. Unfortunately I don't recall the third one at this moment but I believe there were at least 3 if not 4.
I think that the snake and toucan are a reference to the conflict between Golden Saints and Dark Seducers (Golden Saints have avian-themed armor and weapons while Dark Seducers have snake-themed weapons and armor).
I just read The Illustrated Man - I wonder if Sheagoraths outfit is supposed to be like living illustrations that were intended to move if the technology was available at the time 🤔
I think that the Altmer’s gravestone is also a reference to the Oingo Boingo song “We Close Our Eyes” as well. One of the lines goes: “And if you love me, and if you really try to make the seconds count, then we can close our eyes”. Not sure if it is, but the wording was strikingly similar
Couldn’t make the streams so I’m glad you finally did the work and took the time to go through everything and get the video done. Appreciate it brother
The amount of time you spent streaming progress on this video goes to show how much work goes into a project this big. You never fail to create truly quality content
You know, I suggested you make some of these CCC videos a few years back, and you said that there just wasn’t enough content in the older games to do it. Glad to see that that changed, can’t wait for you to make your way towards morrowind, that game has tons of little nooks and crannies hidden about to find.
@@I-HAVE-A-BOMB and Morrowind more than Oblivion. They actually took the time, care, and effort to hide tons of small items in little nooks and crannies back in that game, making exploring and looking everywhere actually worth it.
@@bimlauyomashitobi421 Yeah, sucks to see the degeneration of art these days. Everything from houses, to video games are built with the least amount if effort for maximum profit.
With the symbols on Sheogoraths outfit being representations of his sphere (mental illness and madness) then I think the stab in the back is a reference to paranoia
Personally, I agree with other commenters who beat me to the punch, in that it's a symbolic representation of the other Daedra cursing Jyggalag to become Sheogorath. This betrayal is so intrinsic to the Shivering Isles expansion and the significance of the Greymarch's occurrence that given that a Greymarch is about to take place when the player character enters the isles, it seems much more appropriate than generalized paranoia.
It's not mental health and madness it's mania (madness) and demtia (the decline of all mental facilities). I think it's a nice theory but everyones seemed to have solved the representative meaning of the knife mark.
Bird and beast imagery makes sense for Sheogorath, since he used a bird to beat Hircine's beast in a contest between the Princes. A lot of his clothing could be references to the tales in sixteen accords of madness.
The Missing Pauldron is not about the lack of pauldrons in the game. It's about the Daedric Right Pauldron in Morrowind. Because until the Bloodmoon expansion, the only place you could find a Daedric Right Pauldron was on the body of Divayth Fyr after killing him.
One point about Punishment Point: per the game script, you're apparently not actually falling, the ground is flying at you. This is why you can't even avoid death with console commands on this one.
Snakes represent Lorkhan, whereas birds represent Auriel (maybe Trininac too) and dragons represent Akatosh. The bird slays the snake just as in the creation myth. The phoenix represents Auriel ascending to Aetherius. And I may be misremembering but Michael Kirkbride may have said that Sheogorath is the 'shadow of Akatosh'. It is fitting that the madgod is complementary to creation myths, as he is the counterpart to what exists physically, the god of not-there. Sheogorath is also well versed and takes advantage of the power of symbolism and mythopoeia, using the symbols of Mundus in his own plans, the most obvious being the Enantiomorph to make the new madgod.
I absolutely love how "brutal" you are by today's standards of documentation. You explain and even joke about sensitive topics calmly and honestly with no exaggerated fake shock,(and cowering in fear as you await judgement by the advertiser overlords, as they send assassins after you for even hinting at something explicit) as so many youtubers do now. It's especially fitting with how Shivering Isles is absolutely full of references to so much real psychology and extreme cases of it.
There is an additional dialog on Sheogorath's shrine if you make an offering on the shrine when you have already started the Shivering Isles main quest but havent finished it. In which Sheogorath recognizes you and says something like "what are u doing here, u should be on ur way to *current shivering isles quest location* (it changest depending in what stage of the main questline you are in), well I suppose I can give you something to do in the meanwhile" and then gives you the daedric quest. I tried this in several stages of the main questline for fun, that's how I found out
I believe the coat may represent a mad thrown together story of time from fights against the aidra to the making of their own realms. In a very mad way, in accordance to his realm
It's been so much fun watching this video come together through your livestreams! Excellent final product and I'm glad I got to come along for the ride!
Sheogorath's small part in Skyrim was such a crime after such a masterful DLC. Completely missed opportunity. Great video Camel all the way from Australia!
@@BoxOKittens yeah, Skyrim definitely didn't do enough with him, but there is one fun fact I've got! The 'random beggar'shares the same name and a very similar appearance to the Priest of Mania in the Shivering Isles, so even though it's not quite Haskill, it's still a recurring character
bro i have been a nightwish fan my entire life, and i have played oblivion hundreds of times. and i still NEVER found myself coming across the dark chest of wonders??? i'm super upset about this, i would have absolutely flipped out about this reference
Uncle Leo is also the only intelligent and non-hostile super mutant from Fallout 3, apart from Fawkes, so the reference definitely doesn't end on Shivering Isles))
It's quite likely that while some of the patterns on Sheogorath's clothes are deliberately selected for relevance to him, others are intentionally random, because he's mad, and it suits him well to wear something random, like his personality.
As much as I'd personally prefer for such a straightforward explanation to not be the case, it's been proven many times with reasons as to why game devs do certain things is that just because the answer seems simple, doesn't mean that it's incorrect.
@@olivercharles2930 That's what I would have thought, but look at all the other examples of cut content within Bethesda's games. Besides, given that the focus is on the god of Madness himself, would it really be that big a surprise? And if so, wouldn't it make it all the MORE relevant?
Oh sheesh it's been a while since I played oblivion... I seem to remember from when I was younger, that either during a quest line, just idle, or if you talked to sheogorath or Haskil at a certain point in the quest progression, he tells you a short short story about when he got stabbed in the back. If memory serves it was one of the times of Jigylag or however its spelled. You've inspired me to play Oblivion again, just for this expansion. Speaking of expansions, any chance there will be / is a Knights of the Nine vid? I love your content, keep it up. Thumbs-up emoji
thank you for bringing back to this world. it’s been nearly 11 years since skyrim & it might be 4-5 more until I’m playing a new elder scrolls. still remember buying oblivion on release day, I’ll always love this series.
There is a bug with the fight club members where a club spawn in their inventory every day. If you look at their inventory, most are carring more than 1k clubs
Something that’s very cool that I never noticed beforehand but others have may have is that the Ring of Lordship rings each represent the different sides of Mania and Dementia, mania is very colorful and enchants your personality while Dementia basically is dark and gives you poison resistance.
The Oblivion content is making me blush, Camel!! Fuck yes! Edit: That alternative face mod fucks me up every time. Especially the beast races looking hella fucked up! 😅
Ghost dog gauntlet is reference to the 1999 film called "Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai" Where main character is a loyal samurai / companion to a mafia member who wears him like gauntlet (Symbolically).
A dragon eating a snake, it's two different serpents representing two sides of Shoegorath and his destiny to become Jyggalag. Its an ouroboros cycle. If you look deeper at it you could say the dragon even represents Akatosh and the reset of each Kalpa with Jyggalag always destined to reborn as Shoegorath no matter how hard he tries to escape
I wonder if maybe Sheogorath’s Regalia represents the life events of Sheogorath, past, present, and future. So the dragons may not hold meaning to “this” Sheogorath, but rather the Champion of Cyrodiil.
I really like your vids Camel. I really do. Usually I'd listen while doing some work or while finishing up a report. But 17:40 made me stop everything and Alt-Tab just to rewind and hear it again. Master class good sir! and as far as I can tell, not even the most replayed part of the vid.
Yes! At this rate you will still probably do one of these episodes for every single zone across all of the elder scrolls before TES:VI is released... Keep up the amazing work
He's now covering other games and we still wait with baited breath for that 6th installment. I couldn't really get into skyrim but I played through oblivion a fair few times. I eventually got bored enough to persevere through skyrim and am now on my last playthrough (He says!) as I need to do the dark brotherhood quest line to mop up the achievements. I never saw myself finishing this game. I wish we could swap our items between games. I really don't want to go back to square one for the dark brotherhood.
Ahhh I really appreciate that you mentioned 1 not being a prime number, many people think a prime number is a number which can only be divided by 1 and itself, meaning 1 would be prime, but in fact a prime is a number with two factors. That is there exist two unique factors which divide the number, thus 2 is the smallest prime
Perhaps the "stab wound" on his outfit symbolizes paranoia of being betrayed? The wolf head could possibly refer to the time when Sheogorath tricked Hircine in a bet.
Not sure what's more impressive in this video, the amount of details the og writers put in the game, the amount of references they put in, the fact that you found these, length of the video, or the amount of puns you made throughout the video
The passion and creativity of the OG Bethesda team really shows in Oblivion and Morrowind. Skyrim is a fantastic game but I can’t deny it just lacks some of the crazy outlandish stuff that made its predecessors so special
Blame Todd Howard. At some point, Todd got into the habit of simplifying things in both gameplay and the setting. Ironic given his habitual hypemongering and the start of his career at Bethesda. He'd even started it by the time of Oblivion, at least according to Michael Kirkbride, who claims we have Todd to blame for turning Cyrodiil from a funky Roman Jungle dotted with Ayleid towers and crisscrossed with rivers into temperate forest Lord of the Rings land. Because LOTR movies were popular then, you see. He's also the reason Skyrim went from a land full of wild mages weaving wind and ice magics the like of which are seen nowhere else, with average joes knowing the Thu'um, to Viking Game of Thrones. Because Game of Thrones was popular then, you see.
My only guess for the stab wound is how Sheogorath only exists because of the betrayal of the other daedric Princes, or how Sheogorath is a betrayal of all Jyggalag strives for. Might even be a representation of the fight between them.
Uncle Leo is also referenced in a random encounter in Fallout 3 with a friendly super mutant called by the same name. In Fallout: New Vegas, Lily's schizophrenia manifests itself as a voice called "Leo" that channels her aggression and tells her to commit acts of violence.
At 54:55, Ive always thought that this is a reference to Moloch, and sacrificing children for a god. On wikipedia there is a drawing of statue holding a child and the child has the same pose as the skeleton in game (extended arms upwards)
09:35 Those jellyfishes look like shambles' spine. 10:17 In case there is Molag Bal's image, aren't those dragons you've mentioned earler representing Peryite, who is also a daedric prince? Like, Sheogorath was the strongest daedric prince, Jyggalag, and it's quite possible that his clothes represent some other daedric cycles, too. 10:46 That black hole looks more like shadow from a bump
Yay a video on these properly, still could've sworn you mentioned a few in the original Oblivion vid but meh now we have an even bigger list of them now! :D

Bro you liked your own comment lmao
To Camel
I noticed 2 Things that even YOU missed that you might be interested in knowing, the first a theory, the second can be confirmed by visiting The Elder Scrolls wiki page.
At 44:00 the painting of three is probably refence to Neverhood.. Clayman eating apples and burping 👍👍👍 gimme feedback if you think the same. Thx
Cutter is also the name of one of the lead characters of the old comic book series ELFQUEST. In fact, Cutter is an ELF.
Say, if you're familiar with Nightwish, do you also know the Dwarven metal band WIND ROSE?
the "bloody anomaly on his back" could be a reference to the fact that the other daedra betrayed him while he was Jyggalag, thus "backstabbing" him.
Exactly what I was gonna say. Big miss for Camel, cause that is pretty important for this DLC in particular.
That does seem to make sense. Nice going Lord Adorable!
I think it could also be a reference to GOT alas a mad king stabbed in the back (im unaware if the show handles the mad kings death in the same way as the books, so i could be talking out my ass here)
Yup my thoughts exactly
And might other symbols on his clothing be related to all daedra who betrayed him? His creators woven into the fabric of his being?

Yeah I agree too. I think its telling a story with Shivering Isle accents. I also think that demon mouth is an Oblivion Gate.
They look more like 3 claws to me, I may be wrong
31:37
Fun fact: If you do Sheogorath's Daedric quest and do NOT have Shivering Isles installed, Sheo will have a completely different voice, as it wasn't voiced by Wes Johnson in the original game, before Shivering Isles was released. Pretty small detail that often gets missed, since Shivering Isles was out only a year after Oblivion got released. Nevertheless, there are videos on TH-cam covering Sheogorath's old voice acting if anyone is interested in hearing it.
Is it the same guy who did his voice in Morrowind?
It’s also worth noting that Sheo has different dialogue if you do his shrine after you have met him in the isles (basically chastises you for being here and not stopping the graymarch)
I thought it was also if you haven't entered the isles
@@Judgement_Kazzy It's actually Todd Howard who originally voiced Sheogorath before Wes Johnson, if I recall.
Yeah, yeah… you may be actually right. Good thinking.
lol that's great!
1000+ IQ pro gamer move
"More easily" yeah, because Divath won't mop the floor with you if you try punching him.
Tempted to start a new game and see this for myself
@@alyssamurin3857 I knew about the other two but not the third
And the voice changes depending on your quest progression if you haven't entered the isles it's the base game voice if you have its sheogorath's DLC voice and after a time it's haskill I believe haskill will even call you sheogorath if you finish the questline

Very fitting for the Mad God
Absolutely love this dlc. Environments and characters are top tier!

Damn, the second you said "over the hills and far away" the song started playing in my head and I knew it was going to be a reference to Nightwish, despite it being at least a decade since I last heard that song. Good band!

A foundational DLC that set the standard in my heart for Sequel-Esque DLC. Time to travel to 2007 nostalgia; great video!
I think Sheogorath's dragon and snake sleeve is just a snake shedding its skin
Before the Shivering isles DLC the sheogorath statue had a different voice actor which is very different from what made Sheogorath popular with the voice of Wes Johnson.

There's no wonder why there's a community that loves it with a passion.
Yes I love this DLC, such a great time for Bethesda Games.
I was looking for this comment just so I could second my opinion of it because I agree with you lol
One of the lines goes:
“And if you love me, and if you really try to make the seconds count, then we can close our eyes”.
Not sure if it is, but the wording was strikingly similar

I cannot explain how much I love your vids. They're so calming
About the wolf/dog head on Sheo's clothes, I think it might be a Flayed Hound, which you can encounter in SI.
Never even thought of that, though with the Hunger, Shambles, Gnarl and Elytra, it makes perfect sense.

The furry beast on sheogoraths outfit could very well be a depiction of his form in kahjiit myth, since he is a central figure to them.

The backstabbing mark could be from when Sheo was Jygglag, and the other princes had to teamnup and "back stab," him to defeat him.

@@Erock1900 It can't be the case when everything else is undeniably deliberate.
@@olivercharles2930 That's what I would have thought, but look at all the other examples of cut content within Bethesda's games. Besides, given that the focus is on the god of Madness himself, would it really be that big a surprise? And if so, wouldn't it make it all the MORE relevant?

The wolf head is possibly a reference to his battle with Hircine? It's the only thing with wolves I can think of that ties in with him
I wonder if maybe Sheogorath’s Regalia represents the life events of Sheogorath, past, present, and future. So the dragons may not hold meaning to “this” Sheogorath, but rather the Champion of Cyrodiil.
The mudcrab and furry creature (likely a rat) are a reference to the wabbajack, as they are two of the possibilities for transformation

This might be the first time I’ve ever heard the word “penultimate” used correctly in a TH-cam video
I once used the full Exodia combo of ultimate, penultimate, antepenultimate, preantepenultimate and propreantepenultimate, just to annoy everyone
Perhaps the "stab wound" on his outfit symbolizes paranoia of being betrayed?
The wolf head could possibly refer to the time when Sheogorath tricked Hircine in a bet.
By far my favorite CCC video! Love Oblivion and the Shivering Isles!
Wooo thanks I’ve been hyped for this vid!!
I loved this entire DLC as a kid. I played the wahzoo out of this.
