    In-flight presentation of the GEE BEE at the La Ferté Alais meeting in 1996.
    This aircraft, which came from the United States for a unique presentation in France, is a replica of a racing plane from the early 1930s.
    Due to the power of its engine and its instability in flight, it was nicknamed "death trap" or "widowmaker"!

But after they crashed, a Frankenstein style job was pulled off where parts from both planes were cannibalized to try create a new plane, which was incredibly unstable and only ventured far enough off the ground to provide enough altitude to crash

    Ive seen this fly at an air show in Frederick Maryland many years ago. Back in the 30s Jimmy Doolittle was the only guy who flew one without crashing. We know a lot more about aerodynamics now. Still takes some balls to fly it.

      Take a look at the Granville brothers Gee Bee Model Z.

  • @mrhearse777
    @mrhearse777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The original Granville brothers were made of stern stuff ! Trust me they were. This was a flying engine , and the torque of the motor meant that the wing area couldn't cope when the throttle was suddenly opened. The plane just flipped over and crashed . The old footage shows this . Yet the brothers carried on . The aircraft were very fast , but LETHAL . Many people bought the farm in these things . The Right Stuff indeed.

  • @carllafong4791

    There used to be film footage on TH-cam of a GeeBee crash, I think in Cleveland, immediately after a National Air Race in the 1930s.
    I think the story was that the owner had hired Jimmy Doolittle to fly the plane in the race. He did, and may well have won the race. I can't recall.
    Later that day, Doolittle returns the plane to the owner so the owner can fly it back to his home. The film shows the takeoff and an immediate vicious snap roll into the ground from perhaps 50 feet in altitude. All hands lost.
    The center of gravity in that plane was so far forward, it's a wonder anyone could handle it. Nothing quite like the hum of a big radial engine.
    The film might still be on here. I haven't looked.
