    Hi Sweet Friends, Have you ever wondered if you can dehydrate BONE BROTH and make your own BONE BROTH POWDER? Well you can! And it's really easy and I'll show you how! Now when you leave the house, you can take a bit of bone broth powder and have bone broth "on the go" whenever you want! Love, Mary

      Its amazing loving it; we can freeze bone broth too but dehydration is more easy to use because we don't need to wait to defrost it and it occupies less space in pantry :) Thanks for sharing dear sweet Mary.

      The trick I use to make my dehydrated broth is to boil down my broth to a sticky substance then I spread it thinly and quickly onto the silicone sheet and dehydrate until brittle. It is darker and stronger so not as much needed when rehydrating.

    Some people may find this funny, but my grandma had a grape vine and one particular year we had a bumper crop. Grandma put the excess grapes on cookie sheets and put them in their motor home till she had time to deal with them the next day. Well, she forgot and 3 days later was so upset that she had wasted all those grapes. She was so happy when she went to get them that she had perfectly beautiful raisins. From then on, she “dehydrated” everything she could in the motor home. This was in Arizona. Papa was extremely happy too cuz his favourite dessert/snack was raisin pie.

      I know I'm 1 year too late but just thought I'd share my own fun experience with grapes. If you leave them in the fridge long enough they become raisins too! Takes a long time but we accidentally left a bunch of grapes too long in the fridge and was pleasantly surprised to find raisins 🤭

      I've seen "off grid" info advising to turn your car into a dehydrator in the event of long term power outages!
      That's probably what I'd do with all my frozen fruit and veggies if I couldn't keep my freezers going.
      Also, air circulation is important so leaving a few windows cracked with a screen for bugs is important..... for those of us without an RV....lol

      I've heard of using a car as a dehydrator, BUT be aware that you might end up with a funky smelling car, depending on what you're drying.

    For the square dehydrators simply use the smallest document clips bring up the corner of the silicone mat and pinch with clips. you can control how deep a bowl you need. works every time for me been doing it for years. Keep the clips handy in your canning supplies and you are never searching for some.

    Mary, I never even considered dehydrating bone broth. What an excellent idea. Storage becomes a great deal easier and takes so much less room. that 1/3 cup in a single jar takes the place of 3 pint jars. Thanks for the share!

    Have I mentioned I heard from a historical reenactor that before Lewis and Clark explored our country, they bought every bit of 'portable soup' in their part of the country. He said people had cottage industries that had big trays for pouring broth into out in the sunshine and letting it dry down to a gel that would keep for untold months. I watched your video and Townsend and Son's video and thought I wonder. That led me to defat a broth and reduce it to a gravy consistency, which I spread on my fruit letter trays. It isn't pretty, but it's leather gold. I have some vacuum sealed and some frozen, which takes up hardly any room at all in the freezer. Thanks for putting me on the trail 😍

    This is a great idea! For some time, I have wanted something to add to my dry soup mixes and meal kits to provide some meat flavoring. So far, I've only had powdered bouillons to include in the dry mix (not the healthiest), or added good stock to the mix at cooking time (take up more storage space). Neither alternative has been ideal, but I think this gives us the best of both alternatives. I already have a dehydrator with 7 tray liners that can handle wet foods. Thanks so much for sharing this!

    Great vid Mary.For those who have dehydrators with the round trays and don't have the roll-up insert here's a tip.
    Get some plastic wrap(make sure it is wide enough to drape over the sides of the tray).Form the plastic inside the tray,add the broth making sure not to go over the center hole lip.Then just cut the wrap around the center hole and you're good to go!

    There is a You-tuber by the name of Bexar (pronounced Bear) Prepper. She hasn't posted recently, but she has quite an extensive site on canning, dehydrating, etc. She has a video for Pocket Soup. She dehydrated turkey stock. She cooks the stock all the way down to a viscous goop before she puts it into the dehydrator. It's more manageable that way. No spills. Check it out!

      P Bar - Oh yes!! I know of her videos well!! She is terrific!! Yes, I think that I might not even have to cook it down until it’s like that. The bone broth I was using was so gelatinous before I warmed it that I figured next time I’ll just spread the gelatinous broth on one of the silicone sheets and then dry it. That’ll be so much easier! I’ll definitely do a follow up video where I do it that way. Thanks so much for visiting and for the wonderful information about Bexar Prepper. So glad you’re here!! My broth still felt a little like pliable gelatin sheets (not snappy) after 10 hours, both from 170 F oven and 155 F dehydrator. Should I have left them in a little longer? As for the perpetual broth, I’ve reused the bones. And on the second batch, it’s never gelatinous. Should I maybe not scrape the marrow out of the bones the first time around when I’m straining everything? Maybe leaving it in will help it be gelatinous the second time around?

    I'd like to make a suggestion when it comes to dehydrating and grinding to make powders / spices... ALWAYS sift after grinding... 1.) this gives you a true powder 2.) it helps stops clumping since you are not using an anti-clumping agent. 3.) nasty hard clumps are just not enjoyable.. Nobody likes a crunchy powder lol

    I have two Excalibur's and one other round one. I was thinking we could use any container top of a plastic shoe box etc etc. Or we could use the styrofoam trays the meat comes in and put plastic or parchment paper over it To protect it from the styrofoam and use those to hold the broth... I will try that. Great idea to dehydrate the broth. Thanks

    I just got silicone trays with a lip for my excaliber dehydrator.
    I tested one on a flat surface and it held 3 cups.
    I think the only way you could do that would be to have the trees already loaded with the silicone on top, and use a container with a spout to slowly pour in the bone broth.
    I imagine that it would take a good bit longer to dehydrate that thickness of broth.
    It might be better to try to cups at a time in each tray.

My question is, since I want to make the broth for stews n such and I like a chowder type and I use a thickener like corn starch, would it be better to add the corn starch to the broth to thicken and firm it up while dehydrating? also I add potatoes to most of my stews, could you use a potato flake or use very stiff potatoes in with the broth? Or for that matter seasoned bread crumbs just a tad then powder them both after dehydration?

    I have a question. I have a 26 tray commercial dehydrator. Since I could dehydrate the broth on a cookie sheet lined with parchment in the oven, can I do the same in my dehydrator?
    It is roughly the size of a dishwasher. I have only ever dehydrated jerky veggies and fruit.

    Can you dehydrate broth on silicone trays? Mine was VERY difficult to get off the silicone.

  • @juliaharbeck774
    @juliaharbeck774 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I made this yesterday using my dehydrator so I used the parchment paper. The broth absolutely glued to the parchment paper and since it was so thin was impossible to get off without the paper being stuck to it. I tried the next batch in thin pie tins which worked better but was still really hard to get off. I reconstituted it and now have it in a jelly like substance on just my liners I have with my Excalibur. I wasted a ton of broth, what did you do to keep it from sticking. I think a thicker amount would have helped because I was able to get the thicker pieces out.

      Hi Julia, So sorry to hear about your troubles. You raise a great question. I did not have any trouble releasing the dehydrated bone broth from the parchment paper. It "cracked" right off. I am wondering if some parchment papers are non-stick, while other are not? I'm not sure. Mine does not specifically say non-stick but I have never had anything stick to it. When you mention the thicker amount - was it completely dry though? Or was it more jelly like? As to other options, do you have any of the round dehydrator trays that I show in the video? They worked great in my Excalibur. If not, maybe look for parchment paper that say specifically non-stick. If you decide to try it again, keep me posted. Love, Mary

      Mary Beell - Hi Mary, That is an excellent question! I have a follow up video where I re-hydrate it with water. It tasted great. But what I’ll do next is I’ll do another video where I put it in the fridge and see if it gels up. I also figured out, which I mentioned in the video, I really don’t need to put it in liquid form to dehydrate it. I’m going to do another video where I take the broth in its gelatinous state and spread it out on the silicone sheets and then dehydrate it. It’ll be so much easier than trying to use it in its liquid state. Thanks so much for being here and thanks for the great great question! Love, Mary❤️😘❤️

    So Mary, if you reconstitute the powder and chill the liquid does it get gelatinous again or is the collagen denatured?

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Robert, Thank you for visiting...and excellent question. If you keep the temperature low when you dehydrate it - under 180F - it should reconstitute nicely and become gelatinous when refrigerated. Under 180F should not denature the collagen.

    I've started following you especially regarding tradition foods and prepper pantry. I have a question about the dehydrated bone broth. I've been roasting chickens per your recipe I (love the flavor)! I had a busy week, so I mostly defatted the drippings from the chicken & refrigerated it. In the mean time, I used the dehydrated and mostly defatted dehydrated ch!cken drippings (stored in the fridge, of course) a couple of times for breakfast. Awesome!!! But while warming the water, it occured to me that if I warm it too much, I would destroy the collegen, You've mentioned, not in this video, but another that collegen if very fragile. What is the maximum temperature to warm broth before destroying it? Thank you so very much for your videos and recipes. I've even started to make sandwich bread and my hubby loves it! Selma

    Help! I just finished dehydrating a small batch just to try it out. I spread my gelled broth on parchment paper then laid it on a pan. First some of it stuck to the parchment paper but I was able to peel it off. Second my fingers were a bit greasy, is that from the collagen? Is it ok, do I need to dehydrate more?

    Hi, excellent video as usual 👍👍👍. How long do you think it would shelf stable for? If you were to make a lot do you think it would freeze ok? Finally, is there any impact to the nutritional quality when you dehydrate the broth?

    • @MarysNest
      @MarysNest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow… All great questions the show stability is a really good one. At the time I wasn’t 100% sure. But I find it stays fresh quite a good while if it’s sufficiently dehydrated. Some folks have told me that they dehydrate their bone broth… And in their humble opinion… They think it stays shelf stable for at least a year. I think if you freeze it you could even extend it way past that. In terms of the nutritional value… It should be very similar to the actual bone broth, as long as you’re dehydrate it at 180°F or lower.
