When I was a teenager I read an interview with Robby and it changed my mindset on nutrition forever - he basically said that he never eats anything that wasn’t going to help him reach his goals... to this day I still ask myself at least 90% of the time before I make a food choice is this going to help me reach my goals or hurt me? Very simple advice but for me it has worked wonders over the years to stay in shape and also to save a lot of money by not buying junk that I shouldn’t be eating...Thanks Robby!

Dorian in recent interviews has said that when you are in competition phase (4 to 6 weeks out) you don't need failure to training with heavy weights. You can switch to lighter weights and higher reps to still come close enough to failure. Dorian advocated that when you are close to competition you are working to preserve muscle tissue as you strip off fat. So save the heavy duty training for off season when the calories are in surplus, no dehydration and plenty of sleep. I think Dorian is really smart and is proposing merger of HIT and Lee Haney's philosophy of "stimulate don't annihilate".

I met Robby back in 1978 when I was about 16 and I asked him about the Heavy Duty way and Mentzer. He told me that it works but it was all in your diet that made the difference. He really pushed the subject of your diet above any lifting system. Back then Mentzer was training with a little more volume than he later advocated of just one set taken to absolute failure. He was training with 6 sets per body part. Still far less than any other bodybuilder of the day

@@user-xe5fz6se9j exactly 😉. I’ve gone from 70-90kg doing 1 maximum set to failure, and beyond, with partials, forced reps etc . Training 2-3 times a week 20-30 mins. I’m not a bodybuilder but a combat sport competitor. No other method has given me the gains I have gotten currently. Without gear, May I add.
I suspect that people doing 12-20 sets are
      1) only get to failure after a preposterous amount of volume
      2) genetically gifted and will respond to basically anything
      3) using gear and again, responding to it, and thus anything, extremely well.

Honest observation - in 69 Sergio deserved the win. In 1970 Arnold was sharper and deserved his first Mr O. In 1972 Sergio won, but they gave it to Arnold. Not withstanding what anybody says Sergio was in the best shape of his life in that contest. He wasn't "smooth, or watery, or needed to be drier". Jesus, look at the effing pictures. Let there be no doubt that while bodybuilding is a "subjective" sport Sergio , when in shape , was the singular greatest bodybuilder to ever grace a stage.

Dorian would have been bigger and better if he actually did more volume work, especially for his lagging arms, chest, delts and quads! Those bodyparts respond to more volume, imagine how much he could of brought up his biceps if he did more than just 3 sets a week, i love Dorian but with alot of weal bodyparts he had to put more work into them and unfortunately his stubborness cost him physique wise!

A minor issue with what Robbie said about the 1970 Mr Olympia in NYC. I was there and the theater was packed so much so that I was watching from a packed balcony and used binoculars to see the details. Sergio was huge but not quite as sharp as Arnold. A very close competition. Arnold's charisma also was apparent then on stage. Before the competition Sergio was walking the streers of NY in a pink satin shirt and tight pants. The looks he got by people were jaw-dropping. He was followed by a group of about 20 fans and I stood across the street watching all this.

Actual, true, real Heavy Duty 100% HIT is 1 of The Great systems without a doubt! That said, it's a right time, place etc kind of system. It or any other isn't constantly sustainable for anyone, although neither is frequent hard volume training either. As anyone who's been around the gym a while will tell you, your body goes through varying stages reacting differently at different times to different stimuli, as well as just because. I'm not even referring to aging yet either. For those with the muscle fiber make up most suited to HIT it's almost like magic at the opportune time, for those who aren't it's a nightmare till you come to grips with what's actually most suitable for you. Which you might not like at 1st.

If more is better, why aren’t high volume trainers look like the hulk? I’ll tell you why, because god made you to enjoy life instead of slaving away with weights. Keep wasting your life and time while hit training gets just as good results.

Even dudes that do 20 sets a bodypart are only blasting that bodypart once a week and you know it.
Most guys are closer to Yates and Mentzers earlier recommendation's....
And what is the protocol YOU promote?
6 days a week, Sunday off for "recovery and the Sabbath" ...how scientific.
Train your bodyparts 2 times a week with heavy weights for mass, 3 times a week for higher reps for cuts?
Inexplicably train abs, calves and forearms up to 6 days a week, No particular reason actually given.
20 sets per bodypart. 5 sets per exercise. Why 20 sets? Why not 19? Why not 21? No scientific reason ever given.

Mentzer could have beaten Zane in '79 (placing 2nd) and everyone was ripped off by Arnold at the '80 Olympia. Hard to believe, but the '81 Olympia was even more of a farce with Franco (with promoter and buddy Arnold).

I'm a 66-year-old white guy who began bodybuilding in 1971 at age 15 (and am still bodybuilding, as much as my aging-wear and job-incurred-joint-damage limits me now), so was contemporary with the Schwarzenegger/Oliva era.
As much as I appreciate Arnold's physique and appreciate even more the effect he had of making bodybuilding publicly acceptable (even in 1971, when I began, many people still considered bodybuilding "strange" if not somehow "perverse"), my opinion then and today still is that Oliva at his peak had better aesthetics and proportions than Schwarzenegger at his peak.
If Oliva had entered the 1972 Mr Olympia just a little more defined (and/or, as Robinson observes, drier), I doubt that even that era's muscle industry commercial interests, who preferred a white champion on their magazine covers in order to sell more magazines, would have gotten away with giving Schwarzenegger his questionable win. As Robinson says, Oliva "...was from another planet".

  • @michaelpeters364
    @michaelpeters364 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If you workout for health and have a demanding and time consuming job, the Jones/Mentzer system is great... you don't have to be on steroids to gain a lot of muscle with it any more than if you do high volume... and I think you get as much mind/muscle connection with it, since going to failure and squeezing out that last possible rep, or partial reps to get beyond failure, is every bit as strong of a connection as a burn spread over many sets. Maybe it's not as good for getting ripped or as preparation for stage flexing... but most enthusiasts will never compete and don't have 2-4 hours per day to spend in the gym. But to get good results you do have to go to failure, which isn't easy, can leave you feeling wrung out if you train too often, or don't get enough rest.

Literally THOUSANDS of people swear by it. And my experience, is that it is very similar to the 5 sets of 5 reps. All because it uses enough volume, but NOT TOO MUCH EITHER. The rep range will determine the RESULT of the the effort. It focus on compound movements in the 4-6 rep range at 85% of 1 rep max, resting 3-4 minutes between sets. Sergio Oliva, Reg Park, Bill Pearl, all favored using reps in the 4-6 rep range when trying to put on as much muscle mass too
