- On this one I headed up to a local haunt which I hadn't camped on for over 12 month , the weather decided who's boss on this one .
I was tent bound more or less right after pitching up and the wind and rain just got steadily worse , I sat it out till morning before getting packed up and escaping the madness.
The annoying thing as I sit here uploading this video the sunset and weather is perfect right now , I simply chose the wrong night !

so you pitch at tent on top of a large hill . knowing a storm was coming , then you moan about how blowy it was and heavy rain as well . common sense tells you pitch else where .
Who mentioned a storm , simple answer don’t watch it then …. ⛺️👍

Despite the wind and rain, its so peaceful, no sound of traffic or ignorant drunks shouting and fighting, and I love the sound of rain on the tent and the wind. Great experience great video.
No traffic sounds but the odd aircraft flyby from the nearby spadeadam base .

Always valuable to have the realities of camping in grim conditions up on TH-cam too Dave - and to get reassurance from your calm and unflappable (unlike the tent!) manner safely digging in until dawn. Quite right Rich , it’s not always views and sunsets etc . It was the safest option to sit tight and wait till morning. Surprised how much I did film lol TFW atb Dave

Great adventure, love it, does the soul good to get out there in the country.
Just bought the NX so nice to see how it performs in a bit of wind. The beauty of bad weather is it makes sure your admin is upto date or you’ll suffer.
I own a few tents but I do love the simplicity and ease of use of the NX , and yes not really a mountain tent but can handle a bit of rough weather . If you keep it organised then life will fine atb Dave
@@BorderRambler it’s for the pennine way which I start in March.
It will serve you well , don’t know about you but I always pack the tent separate to the poles . I find the tent folds down to nothing in a dry sack and the poles in a side pocket . Not long till march so enjoy the PW trip ⛺️👍

Hi from Adelaide, Australia. Great video and it was a challenging situation but good on you for sticking it out. In Australia it's usually sunny as, this time of year but even our weather can't seem to make up it's mind and we can have wind and rain then sunny and humid. Cheers :D

Thanks for the video, I’ve had nights like that on Dartmoor. Not good for sleep! Glad to see your tent holding up OK. I bought a Hubba Hubba this year and used it on Dartmoor in August. I really liked it.

Brilliant night mate it’s good to test the kit we rely on so much. I had a nightmare last week on Glaramara strong wind snapped my main tie out and had to bug out to a campsite at 6pm no fun. Lucky I always leave a spare tent in the car. Pitched in the dark.

Hammered there Dave, despite the lack of external time-lapse etc it makes a great video in bad weather. The hubba held well even if it was caving a bit, be interested to know if any poles are bent now? Atb A

There is one think I pack and hope I never need, is my Snugpac SF bivvy bag, for the odd occasion when your main shelter may fail in severe storms, it may save your life. I did use it one a few winters ago where the wind was so strong it would suck the warmth out of the Vango Blade tent, I had to use the bivvy bag to keep the warmth in the down bag. This was in Australia in the snowy mountains at around 1600 meters.
I normally pack my tyvek bivi but on this occasion I didn’t , it would have come in handy as it was a bit damp in the morning due to the conditions. Thanks for watching atb Dave
With winter just around the corner that was a nice reminder of what we're in for, without the bitter cold winds.

That wind was relentless didn't half rattle the tent , I do worry a tad myself when it gets like that, hoping the tent lasts the night 😂, bet that was a scare thinking you'd left your fuel, done that a few times , that was a wild night, take care mate , atb 👍

Good honest content… I came to this for the msr tent looking for how it withstood the conditions, looks like not so well, you mention not the best choice of tent? May I ask what you would have chosen for these conditions, the msr looks great but specs aren’t great but it nice and light… I’m looking for a tent by the way so genuine question. 😊
Thanks for commenting , MSR although is a great tent does flap a lot in wind . So if I knew it was going to be that windy I would have used my Hilleberg akto . But I have since sold this tent as I felt it was too low for me . So I purchased a Helm Compact 1 at 1/4 of the price of the hilly and use this for expected poor weather camps . Thanks Lee , the problem I had the spray was driving in underneath the door . It was rather moist in the morning 😂 my cloth was at the ready for mopping up tho . I suffered but just a little lol TFW atb Dave
Are you using your alcohol burner directly on the Cascade ul table ? Would not have thought it could stand the heat.
No I always have an insulated foil mat under , this has worked well over the last few years of use . What’s hasn’t is me leaning on it and nearly flattening it 😂

I quite enjoy the wild weather Dave TBH but not all the time. Looked like the hubba did ok, obviously caving in at sides but no damage. I get my Elixir 1 tomorrow and get it tested ASAP.
Same here Eddie it’s ok now and again but prefer more pleasant conditions . I think the Elixir 1 is very similar to my Hubba so look forward to seeing it in action ⛺️👍

It neither it’s a Montane fleet gortex waterproof lol those straps do hide the name a bit 👍

Well done for filming in that. I’ve had to bail out twice because of the weather but my descent routes were easier than yours so staying as long as you did was the right choice, IMO.

Mind if you do this, you need to make sure you have quality gear, and the tent is securely pitched, just saying, but of course you fellow veterans know this.
Yes very correct nothing worse than sitting freezing cold in an inadequate bag etc , which I have in the past until I found the gear that worked for me ⛺️👍

Christ! A wild one that Dave. Really showed off the realities of wild camping. Sometimes though we have to go when time allows and if the weather is shite, well, that's the way the cookie crumbles! Can I ask what your tripod is at 6:25? I'm debating getting a lightweight taller tripod. ATB, Chris
It sure was wild Chris , the not so glamorous side of wildcamping . And yes shifts dictate when I can get out so just take what you are given . That little tripod is a very old Slik alloy tripod which I put a quick release ball head on , does the job nicely and is very light. TFW atb Dave

What an horrendous nights weather , think you were lucky to get 3 hours kip Dave. Good effort filming in such conditions its not nice being tent bound .

Anyone poser who says they love camping in that kind of weather has never camped in that kind of weather. Literally impossible to catch a single minute's sleep. Then of course in addition to you and all of your shit being soaking wet, you've got to pack everything up while trying to keep it from being blown a 100 miles away.
The worst weather I've been caught in was while hiking along the Platte river in Nebraska while following the Lewis/Clark route. Hit by 80 mph wind/rain in the middle of the night during a freak summer storm.
And no, I didn't love it.
