There's like three guys who guarded Shaq well in his prime. Guy in his prime, was damn near unstoppable. Shaq from Orlando through Miami was different breed.
Breaking the rim was what Shaq was most famous for in his early days, he did it often. The NBA designed stronger rims because of him, now it's nearly impossible.
I was finishing highschool when Shaq was in his prime with the Lakers, as a Spur fan I remember the feeling of dispair each time Shaq was on the court, he was unguardable.
Thanks gents. I enjoy watching your presentations. One thing to consider is career free throw percentage. Kareem; 72.1% Shaquille; 52.7% I agree there is no comparing players from different eras. But free throws can be used as an equal measure. One player you might want to check out is "Mr. Basketball", George Mikan of the Minneapolis Lakers. Yeah, Minneapolis.
Kareem was more graceful and finesse, and Shaq was just raw power. Kareem dominated for 20 years with the most unstoppable move in NBA history. Shaq doesn't fair well against big men that use finesse.

Shaq was a complete MONSTER! No question the undisputed most dominant player of his era. I'm a huge Shaq fan. But understand, in Kareem's era he was THE G.O.A.T. in high school, college, and the pros. ALL THREE! NOBODY WAS CLOSE. For the young brother who looks at Kareem as just being taller than the players of his era, understand he was a superior athlete and was the one of the most fundamentally sound basketball players in history. By the way, when Shaq had a full head of steam going to the hoop, the 'smart' man would never contest for fear of amputation.
Don't forget Wilt Chamberlain - Several publications have argued that Chamberlain is the greatest NBA player of all time. He holds numerous NBA regular season records in scoring, rebounding, and durability categories; most notably he is the only player to score 100 points in a single NBA game, and average more than 40 and 50 points in a season.
Dennis Rodman (6'9") and Ben Wallace (6'9") both locked Shaq in the playoffs. As for the domination Wilt was a whole different animal and played played against the ultimate stopper Bill Russell. (RIP) Look at the record books and Wilt has his own set of records and Kareem is top three in points, rebounds and blocks
Wilt Chamberlain was basically a modern day Goliath he had speed size talent ,all of it. I remember when Wilt met Shaq he bent down to shake Shaq's hand , he had to bend down to shake Shaq's hand. Think about that. Wiltwas a monster man.
I'm glad the comment section knows whats up lol Kareem played against plenty of other 7ft players. The height thing is a misconception. Shaq himself knows and has said Kareem was better. Also you can't talk about Kareem's competition and act as if Shaq played against nothing but great Centers. Shaq peaked in a weaker era of big men. When he was in Orlando he played against some greats and had back and forth battles with them like Ewing, Robinson and Hakeem (who schooled him) But when he peaked in LA most the bigs were retiring out and all the talent moved to the PFs like Timmy, KG, Dirk ect.. Shaq was playing against some trash ass bigs. I don't want to disrespect Shaq because he is top 5 big man no doubt along with Kareem, Hakeem, Wilt and Bill Russel but if we going to try and say Kareem played against bad competition than Shaq played against worse. And you only saying that argument because you can't believe someone put up more dominant numbers than Shaq lol
Was on board until you said Hakeem schooled Shaq, that’s just complete BS lol. 22 year old Shaq put up identical numbers to Hakeem while being doubled constantly, Shaq was the best player on the floor but Hakeem had a better team.
Exactly. I've researched it plenty because I hate that argument and the avg height for those PF/C was actually slightly taller in Bill/Wilt days. Of course Wilt was the biggest because there just aren't many 7ft people period it doesn't matter what era we're talking about but they were consistently at 6'10 at those positions that's nowhere near the case today. Look at Rodman and Ben Wallace like they weren't much taller than Magic Johnson(granted yes he was a hybrid because not many pg were that tall LOL) But y'all get my point Ben was 6'9 and became 1 of the greatest defenders of all time and rebounders and he did it in Shaq era dude avg 15rbs at SIX FOOT NINE and Shaq never did at 7ft 1 and we've seen Ben play good D on Shaq. But besides the Rudy Goberts aren't many 7ft let alone really good one's now dudes are playing C/PF at 6'7-6'8 every night. Draymond is the dedicated 4/5 at 6'6.... Kobe and MJ height 😳 that was not the case in Kareem, Oscar, Wilt, Russell days. There weren't 5'10 players either the pg's were taller than a lot nowadays, I won't argue that it doesn't necessarily mean 1 is automatically better than another because of size but the whole argument casual fans have about that is so misconstrued.
@@vinnypaolini9116 So you can disagree with me saying schooled (although Shaq says so all the time) but saying "22 year old Shaq" means nothing. He was in his 3rd year avg 29/11 on 58% shooting. That's not your average 22 year old. Shaq was also runner up for MVP that year. Shaq was not the only one doubled. Shaq was never known for great defense, they absolutely were doubling Hakeem as well. But they defended each other most of the time and Hakeem came out on top with a sweep avg 33ppg. That's getting schooled to me. Shaq was not the best player on the floor. That much was shown. Shaq says he couldn't figure out Hakeem and was the only big he faced he couldn't get the best of. Lastly, Orlando was a #1 seed in the East and went 57-25, Rockets were a #6 seed and went 47-35. Orlando were favorites to winning not the Rockets so no Hakeem did not have the better team. Penny Hardaway made all nba 1st team and Shaq made all nba 2nd team. Orlando had the better team and were favorites to win with the better seed, MVP runner up on their team. Penny btw avg. 25/8 on 50% shooting. Now of course Orlando ended up getting swept and Rockets obviously ended up playing better as a team in the finals but we not going to act like they were favorited and had the most talent

Kareem's game was all around better than Shaqs! For one Shaq would have a hard time stopping Kareem Abdul Jabar's skyhook! Plus you can't beat his longevity 23 years

Shaq could definitely be stopped. You're not gonna see it in a highlight video though! Hack a Shaq! Look it up because it was before your time. Shaq got shutdown MANY times when teams just put him on the line. He might have been the worst free throw shooter in NBA history!
With all due respect it's not hard comparing MJ and Kobe. Yes, Kobe has a similar play style but MJ did absolutely everything more efficiently and just flat out better. Kobe is not close to MJ.
Kareem was better than Shaq. It's not really disputed. Shaq would tell you Kareem was better. Kareem was the best high school, college, and arguably best NBA player ever.
Kareem was the best player on only 3 championship teams. In 2 of those rings he was the 3rd best player. Career wise Kareem had a way better career because he actually only focused on basketball and stayed in shape. At their absolute highest level of basketball I'm taking shaq any day. The 3peat shaq was insane.
The STARTING centers during Wilt's career averaged 6"11 in height. He was just better than everyone. One of the first plays in this video is Shaq dunking on 6'8", 340 pound starting center for the Suns, Oliver Miller. Wilt was the greatest athlete and player basketball has ever experienced. Bar none. Kobe even said he was number 1. NBA players don't even bother mentioning him because it is supposed to be left unsaid that it is Wilt, then everyone else fighting for number 1 under him.
Wilt was, is and will always be the most unstoppable force in basketball. And he didn't just play 35 minutes a game like Shaq. He averaged for his entire career 45 minutes per game at a time the game was played at a faster pace. He was every bit as big as Shaq but stronger. Shaq averaged 11 rebounds a game. Wilt averaged 23. Shaq averaged 2 blocks a game. Officially they didn't start keeping stats for blocked shots until a year after he retired but unofficially there is data for 112 games in the final years of Wilt's career and they have him at 8.8 blocks per game. Every single year for the first 8 years of Wilt's career he averaged more points per game than Shaq's highest yearly average. Kareem played the longest and put up the most points, Bill Russell was the consummate team player and has the most championships of anyone and will always hold that record. Shaq is at least 4th in that line of greatest center ever.
Key phrase “final years”. Way past his prime and he was still a force defensively. His Lakers years were past his prime and he led the league in rebounds most of those years. Shaq would not stand a chance against a prime Wilt.
Dude was hating a bit hard on Kareem. He was proving himself wrong with his own points. It was a different era, there was no one that could guard Kareem him, and they didn’t have to shoot the three. All reasons he was great. In the style of play at the time, he was unmatched. He scored more point than anyone WITHOUT the three by being a dominant force under the basket. Yes Shaq would have pounded him. When he played it was in a different, physical era. They weren’t even dunking in Kareem’s time but that don’t make him as low to Shaq as he made it out. It makes Kareem the most dominant center of his time. He got rings and the most points.
Early in Shaq's career, when he played for the Orlando Magic, I saw something I've seen just that one time. The Magic had the ball on offense, 4-on-5, because Shaq was late coming up the court. He built up a head-of-steam, running right at the basket. A teammate passed to him for a dunk, and it seemed to me that the opposing players just got out of the way of Shaq, instead of playing defense. Maybe that's not what happened, but it looked like it.
@@anthonychurch726 WIlt did everything.....60 % of his career field goals are fade away off the glass shots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was the 1st notable player at least to do the SKY HOOK....not Kareem, @ watch the vids...AMAZING..

These guys don’t know what they’re talking about. Not to mention his incredible conditioning and strength. Shaq would be lucky to average 20 points on Wilt.
Shaq highlights should only be Magic and Lakers. Man was completely different. And low key, he had handles. I’ve seen him run the break coast to coast and drop dimes. Way more skilled than highlights show. And even though he was notoriously bad at free throws, he always said “I make them when they count” and he did.

There's like three guys who guarded Shaq well in his prime. Guy in his prime, was damn near unstoppable. Shaq from Orlando through Miami was different breed.

Darrell Dawkins.......
Nah, Darrell Dawkins bro, not Shaq.
It was Darryl Dawkins who destroyed rims not shaq

One thing to consider is career free throw percentage. Kareem; 72.1% Shaquille; 52.7%
I agree there is no comparing players from different eras. But free throws can be used as an equal measure.
One player you might want to check out is "Mr. Basketball", George Mikan of the Minneapolis Lakers. Yeah, Minneapolis.
Wilt couldn't shoot free throws. Tim Duncan couldn't shoot free throws. It happens.
Shaq had the deadly combination of speed and size
I was about to go to bed then this was on my feed!
Kareem was more graceful and finesse, and Shaq was just raw power. Kareem dominated for 20 years with the most unstoppable move in NBA history. Shaq doesn't fair well against big men that use finesse.
Yep: see Shaq Vs Hakeem in the 1995 finals. Pure and utter dominance by Hakeem. Hakeem showed Shaq he wasn’t quite ready yet.
@@ATrainInfinite Wtf type of nonsense are you spitting? Shaq put up identical numbers to Hakeem at 22 years old while being doubled constantly, Shaq was the best player in that series and that’s just a fact. Houston had the better TEAM.

Shaq was such a unit that rules were added to the game BECAUSE OF SHAQ! Nobody old or new can stop him in his prime, nobody.
Watch the video of Wilt shaking Shaq's hand ;).
Seeing Shaq’s Orlando highlights makes me wonder how much better he could’ve been if he worked out, and worked on getting better in the off-season.
Dennis Rodman (6'9") and Ben Wallace (6'9") both locked Shaq in the playoffs. As for the domination Wilt was a whole different animal and played played against the ultimate stopper Bill Russell. (RIP)
Look at the record books and Wilt has his own set of records and Kareem is top three in points, rebounds and blocks
In 01 Shaq was so big athletic and strong with a decent touch. He was unstoppable!! 7'1" 370 lbs of angry muscle...
Wilt Chamberlain was basically a modern day Goliath he had speed size talent ,all of it.
I remember when Wilt met Shaq he bent down to shake Shaq's hand , he had to bend down to shake Shaq's hand. Think about that.
Wiltwas a monster man.
He towered over Shaq and he was like 60.
Kareem had 6 rings and the hook shot is the most unstoppable shot in history
Shaq got schooled by Hakeem Olajuwon in the 1995 NBA Finals (The Rockets swept Orlando 4-0) but by 2000-2001 Shaq was basically unstoppable.
Team game. Rockets had the much better team. Robert Horry is a winner.
Facts he schooled shaq

Hakeem averaged 32.8 12 6 & 2 Blks

Just the power of Shaq's dunks where incredible. Scary man in the paint.
Look at Rodman and Ben Wallace like they weren't much taller than Magic Johnson(granted yes he was a hybrid because not many pg were that tall LOL)
But y'all get my point Ben was 6'9 and became 1 of the greatest defenders of all time and rebounders and he did it in Shaq era dude avg 15rbs at SIX FOOT NINE and Shaq never did at 7ft 1 and we've seen Ben play good D on Shaq.

HAKEEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Y’all are young as hell lol. I watched this man in Orlando and LA
Kareem had to bend down to shake Shaq's hand. Shaq looked up like , daaamn.
Why do y’all talk like Kareem played in the 40s? They definitely were dunking in the 70. Lmfao
They didn't want to take a charge and be on the DL for a month, haha!
That's every player on defence now
