I am so glad I learned to sew years ago. I turned my capris into shorts, my tunics into cute tops and can alter clothes that are ill fitting. Not everything can be repurposed or altered. But I really ended up with some cute shorts outfits!
I have done something similar to my clothes, saves money and I have something I love. Right now, I have a shirt I love that I need to bring to a tailor and have it updated.
That's what I do too. I update my clothes as needed. I like good quality items, but can not afford to replace them every few years. So a make-over often helps.
I agree about not hanging on to trendy and dated pieces - but I have kept select pieces that suit me and are in tip top condition. I also agree that classic silhouettes change over time - but I won't let go of classics that suit my figure better than a more modern take on it, e.g., blazers - the slightly relaxed, longer style that is "in" right now really doesn't suit my petite frame and short torso. Another key consideration is the ever decreasing quality of clothing. I bitterly regret getting rid of a number of pieces that are no longer available in the same quality at a reasonable price-point - remember when clothes that really should be lined, actually were lined?
I agree with you. The few pieces that I regret having parted with were made of beautiful fabrics that one rarely sees today, Such as lined wool trousers, lined silk jackets, etc.
@@maryokeefe5351 So, so true. My mother told me lined pieces would hang better and last longer and she wasn't wrong. It's bad enough that nothing's lined, but I'm also resenting how little is actually made of natural fabrics anymore. I'm just not willing to compromise on quality, fabric and finishing. Consequently almost everything I've bought in 2023 has been from vintage/consignment stores and anywhere from 2 to 10 yo. Oh well, better for the environment and my budget!
It would have been helpful if you modelled the suggested replacement outfit for 2015. Perhaps a video of doing comparisons with pictures of your 2015 versus 2023! I would love that.
Most of my wardrobe is 'timeless classics'. Mostly natural fiber. Some items I own for quite a few years. Nobody noticed. I do not live in the most fashionable part of the country. More like a Red Neck area where people drive pick-up trucks. Tonight we went to a nice Steak House for dinner and at least half the people were dressed in jeans, t-shirts and hoodies. I knew that the friends who joined us would be very casual too. I wore light taupe wide leg linen/cotton pants, a tank top with a matching linen/cotton cardigan by Nic&Zoe, sandals, gold earrings and a set of bracelets. I fit in, but was still dressier then most others.
I am short, busty, and long-waisted. When I wear high-waisted skirts dresses and pants, I look great. Everything is proportional. The current "oversize boyfriend's blazer" look is simply hideous on me! I gain 50 pounds, lose 20% of my visual height, and feel awful. Dumpy. Fat. So, I'm afraid there are lots of current trends that I will NEVER adopt. My shorter cropped and closely fitted blazers will simply have to do, I refuse to make myself look bad in the name of chasing a trend!
@lindacgrace. Well said!!! 👏👏👏 You’re right, I actually saw in another video, a long time ago, that petite women should wear well fitted blazers, not long. Additionally, this video is too long; presenter kept repeating the same thing over and over again. Could have been done in 5-10 minutes. And to update your wardrobe every six months is good for people who have the means to do it.
Me too. I like cropped jackets. They suit me now as they did when I was 20. I got rid of the newer stuff I purchased because they just made me look dumpy
Personally, I am SO glad skinny jeans are not the trend anymore. They are more often not flattering than the opposite. They still have their place with boots, not booties, in my opinion!
I edit my wardrobe constantly, getting rid of anything outdated, looks cheap or that doesn’t fit. Weight loss over the last five or so years resulted in a wardrobe of too-big clothes, but it’s hard to let go of clothes I still love. I’ve downsized with alterations what I could, mostly skirts because of their simple designs, but there is a limit on how much one can do on too-big items.
My two hardest items to give away when I lost 50 pounds were my lack leather jacket, and my London Fog raincoat. I bought a new London Fog on Amazon, and bought a bunch of very slightly used leather jackets on Poshmark for less than $100. I posted some clothes on BuyNothing, and took about 3 boxes to a woman’s shelter and job training place. One of the women and I talked outside by my car, and women kept coming out to show what they’d found. It was fun, and I didn’t mind giving away even the nicest things because I could see how much people enjoyed them. The Buy Nothing gal asked if I minded if she passed along things that didn’t fit or weren’t her style. She gave some to a gal who was just finishing college and used them for job interviews.
Very timely currently going through my wardrobe after losing 40 pounds and being gifted by my sister with many clothes. Appreciate your advice and encouragement.
Great video Beth! As a 68 year old woman you have inspired me so much with your timeless style but yet keeping with the trends even at a minimal stage.
I’ve already taken your advice - I parted ways with skirts that I loved but hadn’t worn in 5 years. My closet thanked me. Thanks for another great video Beth ❤
I retired at 62 but am still working in the mall! Lol! Most of my clothes r new for work as l get everything cute at a steep discount! I am 69 yrs. old now and don't plan on ever actually retiring! I traveled when l was young and have no desire to go any where! The mall is my Happy place! Lol!
I needed a proverbial “kick in the shorts” to get rid of some of my old, ill-fitting items. Thank you, Beth, for giving me insight and motivation to do so.👍🏻
I find an easy way to sort my closet is to turn all the hangers around at the beginning of a season. When returning items from the laundry, I hang the garment the “right way”. At the end of the season I take a serious look at the items hung backward - I clearly did not wear these items in the previous season. Those items deserve evaluation.
WOW - I love this - Another system that works is removing an item of clothing when you buy something new - This one can be difficult but it forces us to look closely at our clothes and make the difficult decisions. -
With the passing years I have learned that I like and prefer solid colors, simple styles and I gave up florals and never looked back, I still like stripes on shirts but everything else is a solid, my walking closet is free and has enough space and when I go shopping I don't lose time with stuff I know I will never wear.
That sounds great. I am trying to operate in the same way. It is also a method to reach the so called capsule wardrobe. How wonderful it is to look into your wardrobe which is filled with items that are compatible with almost each other item there. I am still struggling, but some success is visible already.. :-))
Over the last 6 months I have had a massive clear out and I will keep checking it every few weeks. Thank you for your inspiration you have help me so much.
I have classic, tailored clothes that are in high quality fabrics, neutral colors and from classic brands. Some are over 10 years old that I can still wear. I would love more advice on styles of these classics that may look outdated.
Beth, great tips. I know I need to change some things. One thing I think about often is something that is probably very simple but to me it’s a hard thing to do. That’s accessories especially belts. When I tuck things in if feel like I look fat around the middle but it does make my legs look long and probably not so frumpy. Thanks for the inspiration!! I’ll probably watch this video again. I also want to add I think I have been following your blog since you started and have gotten some valuable advice!!❤❤
Thanks for being here! Belts can be tricky but it's mostly us being harsh on ourselves. I don't have much of a waist these days but adding a belt helps with the illusion of one.
What else would you wear with boots in the winter. The wide leg jeans hang onto the floor and get dirty. They also do not look flattering tucked into boots.
Needed reminders! There must be tons of skinny jeans in the pipeline because a few years after they started telling us the silhouette was dated, they’re still selling them!!
Beth, i would luv to see you declutter your closet for the new Fall season. I don't think I've seen a declutter from you in the year I've been a subscriber 😊
I'm at the time in my life where my body is changing rapidly and clothes that looked good last year, don't look good today; I do edit my wardrobe, but now am at the point where I hardly have a wardrobe anymore, but am unable to find something new that suits me, fits me or that I truly like. In the meantime, until I find clothes I really like, I sew neutrals so that I have something to wear. 😅 Thanks for a lovely video and great tips!

Hi Beth! I always enjoy your videos so much! But this one did frustrate me a little bit. I am generally with you on the points that you make about paying attention and keeping your look contemporary (and yeah! Goodbye to skinny jeans!) But it seems so wasteful to just get rid of quality, beautiful clothing-for example, your velvet blazer and jeweled sweater. Could you maybe do a video on how to update those classic pieces that maybe aren’t the right cut through styling? That would be really helpful and interesting! Thanks!

Attempting to purchase blazers, can you direct me/us in an affordable direction. I tried the Nordstrom sale but I wasn’t happy. Also, is it better to do a splurge (everyone has their price point) and by one every season and collect blazers slowly?
Thank you, l never thought of getting rid of certain items, especially when you love to brag about items you have that's 10 or 20 years old, especially saying they still look good. You got me, l will start now letting them go. Thanks again, blessings.
Hi from Annie it is amazing as I still hve clothes from over 20yrs ago or longer some still fit others not but I do keep things for years in case fashion returns.
Great video! Just have to ask where the black sleeveless midi dress is from? I’m looking for a dress exactly like that and so far haven’t found anything like it!! Please help! 🙏
I’m glad non-skinny jeans (straight leg, boot cut, wider leg, etc) are the trend now. I’m knock-kneed, and skinny jeans just made that fact abundantly clear. With a wider leg, it’s hardly noticsble!
I understand, it’s just marketing though. I have great innate style however I just bought skinny dark grey jeans with stretchy waist. I have lovely legs and look flat waisted and great in these with my crew neck black mongolian lamb cashmere with my good shoulders, slightly oversized very neat, so graceful not tight like most wear cashmere. Very very comfortable. I have vivobarefoot tan leather barefoot. Gobi boots…this is a polished look despite fashion.I have cognac pebbled leather crossbody quince bag..made in Florence and no logo. It’s many decades since I wore jeans but happy with these. No way would i wear blue or even worse faded.
Hi Beth what is your opinion of long cardigans? I have two good quality ones but never feel comfortable wearing them. Keep or throw? I have only had them three Winters .
Trends don't matter to me. My clothes have always been extremely simple...most of my life has been lived in jeans and tops. My size hasn't changed much in the past half-century - I'm a little thinner now than in my 30s, like size 8 as opposed to size 10 jeans. Always straight leg or wide leg. I'm just turning 76. When I was young, I sewed beautiful dresses etc. - by hand - but for the past few decades, i dont even have a skirt. Black dress slacks when needed. I toss anything that's become worn. The oldest thing in my Closet is a silky tissue-thin ivory Suit Blouse with a draped neckline. I bought it in the mid-80s. It's like a scarf, in terms of space requirements, so i keep it just in case - still looks great on me. None of those oversized Blazers for me! Short waisted and slim - I use something more fitted and softer. No jewelry ever. Etc. Scarves only. No Prints except occasionally on a Scarf. Soft solid colors or neutrals for me.
I have such a hard time getting rid of my clothes I’ve got rid of so many over the years that now I’m done I have a weight problem , the past six years I’ve been up and down fluctuating between a size 2 - a size 14 in a petite body apple , I have been buying secondhand but now I feel outdated , I need help I’m very frustrated I wear clothes that feel good , don’t laugh , during the summer I wear all linen and my denim shorts I honestly never thought about it being outdated , mostly worried about staying cool and dealing with hot flashes I honestly probably look like a potato sack cause I don’t care if it’s loose fitting , I really just want to feel pretty and not look stupid , I guess I will keep trying . Thanks for sharing you always look so beautiful!
I almost always update my clothes. I am now retired and casual clothes are the 70%. I had to laugh a bit because AG is being promoted on so many channels that it devalues the product to me, and really that is just my opinion.
You mention skinny jeans are out of fashion but I see them for sale online everywhere. I don’t like them for me and I got a few tips on what to move out. Thanks!
I still wear skinny jeans in the colder season since I can tuck them into my boots. We get a lot of slush, ice, snow and messy roads/sidewalks. Wearing wideleg jeans makes them dirty and wet at the bottom. Wearing them while driving makes them dirty too. Tucking them into boots looks redicules. I did not find a right answer yet. I wear wide leg and straight jeans/pants in the warmer season.
I won’t miss skinnies for a second, I always hated them. I still wear 501s, if I must wear jeans, they’re never of of style and the mid-rise works better for my short torso.
With Fall coming, I need to update my sports and leisure wear. Can you teach us what to look for in these two areas and I would really appreciate some tips on online shopping because I keep making costly mistakes when ordering items online. Wrong fit, wrong fabrics, bad return policies etc. Help!
I can relate to your frustration with on-line clothing purchases. Simple accessories such as socks, scarves, or costume jewelry are generally okay, but I’ve learned from experience that for clothing items it’s better to try them on in a bricks and mortar store. For example, one brand’s size 10 is another brand’s size 8 or 12.
Hi Beth. I need your input. I found several jackets from some years ago which I used to wear to work. Your blazer suggestions are great, but I can't decide whether my jackets are just jackets or whether they could be considered blazers. What is the difference? My jackets are not oversized, but they are not tight-fitting either. I wore them all over pants, and they are all hip length.
Good question! Blazers and jackets are similar but in the case of a suit jacket that is designed to go with a suit with matching pants or skirt. The blazer is still a tailored jacket conventionally made in a solid color. But times have changed and blazers are made from all sorts of fabric and we typically don't wear suits these days.
Many thanx, Beth. I have now isolated the jackets that were single purchases, and kept one linen jacket that at one point had a matching pants. Once again, you have enabled/facilitated me to expand my wardrobe without spending a cent! Removing some thick shoulder pads has also brought the items up to date. Your good taste, sartorial wisdom and practical common sense are priceless, and have uplifted me in more ways that you can ever guess.
You know, I wore those when I was a kid in the 1970s. To me, they always flatter my shape and mercifully they always come back into style.@@valeriecoopet9897
It was easier to break up with a boyfriend than beloved outdated outfits! Alas, it became much easier than hanging on to looks that were aging my look. I have mentioned many times, I still teach high school so remaining fresh and modern has a positive effect on the respect I receive from my students. I feel I'm setting a good example every single day of "no matter how you feel, you'll look good if you get up, get dressed up and show up!"
O.K. I guess I need to finally say so long to a linen suit that I've been holding on to. It has to be about 15 years old. This was a great video, Beth. It would be so much fun to see you go into your closet and show us how you would declutter your dated clothes. I have two beautiful mother of the bride dresses that I purchased at Saks Fifth Ave. These long gowns were last worn in 2013 and 2019 respectively. What would you suggest I do with them? Thanks for your updated content.
Perhaps you could remake them so they are appropriate for a young woman for a prom. Many young women have a difficult time affording a pretty dress. Then contact a charity organization in early spring to see if they know of someone who might want one.
I would never have worn your 2015 clothes then or now. A personal style that you moved on from to your current personal style which is simpler. I wear natural fabrics, fitted for me. tonal, deep and rich. Never floppy, never synthetics, never patterns.
Women our age have had the privilege to wear well made and well cut, flattering items. I cannot see how buying the almost identical item in lesser quality at much higher price helps me nor the environment. Pear shaped figures are accentuated out of proportion by buttons on the tummy, thigh enhancing mom-jeans, cropped tops and jackets that end exacly at the most unflattering level and crew necks. So why?
On another video, one comment was by a hoarder (her words) who still had clothes from the ‘80s & 90s & she was so happy for the bigger shoulder trend so she could wear these again!!!!! Think she’ll look like she’s in style now?!?!?!?
I am so glad I learned to sew years ago. I turned my capris into shorts, my tunics into cute tops and can alter clothes that are ill fitting. Not everything can be repurposed or altered. But I really ended up with some cute shorts outfits!

Thanks for sharing!
really appreciate your specific examples
You are so welcome! Thanks for stopping by!
Keep trying! It's tough going through menopause, but it does have a beginning and an end. Hangeth thou in there!
I almost always update my clothes. I am now retired and casual clothes are the 70%. I had to laugh a bit because AG is being promoted on so many channels that it devalues the product to me, and really that is just my opinion.
Thanks for watching!
I ordered it last year. It disolves well and came with free vitamin D drops. It tasted pretty good, however, it always made my slightly nauseous .
Very good ideas, but my constructive criticism would be that heavy blue eyeshadow is outdated. 😊
Look again, it isn’t blue. 😂
Well, it looks blue in the video, but whatever color it is, it's too heavy and, IMO, outdated looking.
@@terzim5695 but one opinion
Yes.
I clean my closet and I feel better!❤
It's cathartic!
You mention skinny jeans are out of fashion but I see them for sale online everywhere. I don’t like them for me and I got a few tips on what to move out. Thanks!
Just because something is out of date doesn’t mean they are unavailable to purchase. Capris are available to purchase too.
Skinnies are great to tuck into tall boots under a generous sweater or blazer or trench. Only need one pair for that!
Love 501s!
With Fall coming, I need to update my sports and leisure wear. Can you teach us what to look for in these two areas and I would really appreciate some tips on online shopping because I keep making costly mistakes when ordering items online. Wrong fit, wrong fabrics, bad return policies etc. Help!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Your good taste, sartorial wisdom and practical common sense are priceless, and have uplifted me in more ways that you can ever guess.
blue eyeshadow?
it's a gray palette.
Good day beth.stay safe and take care.God bless always.
Thank you! You too!
“Pants purchased in 2010 are 13 years old now”. That one stung a bit. Not gonna lie.
Right?! It's so easy to lose track of time.
I have straight leg jeans that are 13+ years old. Look just like my newer ones!
Ha ha!
You know, I wore those when I was a kid in the 1970s. To me, they always flatter my shape and mercifully they always come back into style.@@valeriecoopet9897
70% - 30% does not work when you work from home. What should the percentages be then?
It was easier to break up with a boyfriend than beloved outdated outfits! Alas, it became much easier than hanging on to looks that were aging my look. I have mentioned many times, I still teach high school so remaining fresh and modern has a positive effect on the respect I receive from my students. I feel I'm setting a good example every single day of "no matter how you feel, you'll look good if you get up, get dressed up and show up!"
I hear you! Thanks for stopping by!
I ditched all of my kimonos when I changed over to my winter wardrobe this fall. They now seem super dated to me. To the donation pile they went!
Always enjoy your videos. Would like to see a more in-depth video on jewelry. I have a difficult time knowing what is on trend now.
Great suggestion!
I love the black or navy blazer in the beginning of this video with the bright pink lining. It’s not linked.
No, that blazer is no longer available.
Nicely done! Thank you!! 😊
My pleasure!
The only thing I disagree with...no trashing it. It affects the land fills...also someone somewhere can use it.
Thanks for sharing. Pat in North Carolina

Thank you so much❣️
For "fresh idea"...
fabulous advice as always👌
Glad you think so!
Content is on point! Thanks.
I love your videos, Beth!
I'm so happy to hear this! Thanks for stopping by!
Tuck the skinny jeans into your knee high boots.
There is always the local theatre group. Same for old furs, they can use them for period plays.
Linen is a beautiful fabric. Could you wear the suit as separates?
Perhaps you could remake them so they are appropriate for a young woman for a prom. Many young women have a difficult time affording a pretty dress.
Then contact a charity organization in early spring to see if they know of someone who might want one.
If you think you would wear them, you could have them cut to knee length, and have a matching stole with the leftover fabrics.
I would never have worn your 2015 clothes then or now. A personal style that you moved on from to your current personal style which is simpler. I wear natural fabrics, fitted for me. tonal, deep and rich. Never floppy, never synthetics, never patterns.
Tell him to buy his own 🙂
Hasn’t AG1 got soy lethicin in it?
Women our age have had the privilege to wear well made and well cut, flattering items. I cannot see how buying the almost identical item in lesser quality at much higher price helps me nor the environment. Pear shaped figures are accentuated out of proportion by buttons on the tummy, thigh enhancing mom-jeans, cropped tops and jackets that end exacly at the most unflattering level and crew necks. So why?
Actually, Beth, velvet is a big trend for 2023.
Don't you look pretty in hats!
velvet never goes out of style. its the silhouette of the blazer that's dated.
@@BethDjalali 😀 Yes, but since wraps are in you could just throw one over the blazer!
How many times can you say the same. Too repetitive
Trying to look ten years younger is trying to tell a lie
LOL!😂
On another video, one comment was by a hoarder (her words) who still had clothes from the ‘80s & 90s & she was so happy for the bigger shoulder trend so she could wear these again!!!!! Think she’ll look like she’s in style now?!?!?!?
It would depend on the collar, the sleeve ease, and the way those shoulders fit. It might work.
Skinny jeans look good on no one.
