Anytime it spins over fast but uneven speeds means it has no compression in one or more cylinders. It means some valves are busted or stuck open so the engine spins freely on some, but still has come compression on others that didn't get damaged. It's also more common on some cars than others to have timing chain or belt failures, so a knowledgeable mechanic will go into it suspecting that and be on the lookout for it. That says a lot about the other mobile mechanics, they should have known that right away. If you work on cars for a living, you should know!

its easy to tell if an engine had jumped time by the uneven sound of it spinning over. cylinders aren't getting proper compression since the valves are partially open when they shouldn't be. and with all nissan engines produced since around 2002 are interference engines, that one is a write off. best to replace the whole thing with a new long block or find a good one at a Pull-A-Part and go through it to make sure its freshened up with new seals, gaskets, hoses etc and a compression test

Or that it could just be flooeded - can also happen with nissans / infinities with hydraulic lifters - the lifters lose their pressure especially if they have been sitting a long time, and with trying to crank it still injects fuel = washed down cylinder walls. Foot to the floor (clear flood mode) and crank and sooner or later if it is that you will hear the compreesion start to come back as the walls are coated with oil for the rings to seal properly. Have expeienced this a few times when i was a mechanic years ago.

How does a "mechanic" miss that? I'm just a guy who enjoys working on cars and could instantly tell it didn't have compression on at least half the cylinders. A couple years ago was working on a 2004 TSX (bought from a buy here pay here lemon lot and had over 300K) for a friend of my wife's that just shut off on the hwy and sounded exactly the same when I turned it over. The tensioner failed and she (a single mom who lived in a run down camper) didn't have any money to fix it. I told her it was a long shot but I could replace the chain, tensioner, and guides, try do a compression test and hope for the best. After replacing the timing components the compression was fine and the car started and ran with no noise or knock counts on the scan tool. She's still driving it to this day. Sometimes miracles do happen.

@@Bad1flip I know, that's why I said sometimes miracles do happen as I fully expected every valve in the head to be smashed. In the end the chain was still on it and it only skipped just enough teeth to shut off but not enough to smash the valves. Compression was between 140-150 across the board after I put the new chain set on it. IMO that's low for this motor as I was expecting at least 180+psi. But after looking at the manual its technically "fine" by the book. So there is a possibility that the valves did ever so slightly kiss the pistons because compression was way lower than I expected but that could also just be because its got 300K on it.

I've been working on cars since I was 15, and I'm a lot older than that now...not as a "professional", and I'm deaf in one ear, and over a TH-cam video I could tell it was a timing issue. Didn't hear what the mileage was, but that could be a good indicator that it could be a timing issue if the chain hasn't been serviced. I hope she gets her money back from the other mechanics. It would be nice to know whether the engine was repairable... Thank you for being an honest and thoughtful mechanic! My ex wife had someone throw parts at my daughter's car, that I usually fix. Of course, just like this car, they threw spark plugs and coil packs...and I knew the issue with neither of those, and in fact I called them, discussed the issue and told them that I was pretty sure that wasn't the issue. And it wasn't. It was a sensor connector that I fixed when I got back and could take a look at the car. Cost nothing and took 7 minutes...and some contact cleaner. Good thing my ex paid for that...

    • @SolluxDivide
      @SolluxDivide 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Often times, especially with older cars "repairable" is a strong word. It can mean two things
      1) can the car be repaired with a cost that does not exceed the vehicles value(practical value considering all factors such as age, mileage, etc)
      2) can it be repaired at all, with unlimited budget?
2 is almost always a yes. Unless the frame is destroyed, you can replace most everything else. Ship of theseis style. #1 though is realistically what most people need and that's what he provided. The customer immediately understood too "so a new car" because repairing this old/high mileage vehicle just isn't worth it, because who knows if the Transmission fails next? I found this on FB, but I feel like he’s the sort of dude that would just charge her a few bucks for time and try to get her into a car that works. I’m not sure if that can happen, but that’d be great to get enough money and people from TH-cam to help these people out that really need help getting around with a vehicle!!!

This is why I am so grateful to my father for dragging me out of my room when I was a kid and making me help him whenever the cars just needed maintenance or something fixed. From simple oil changes to rebuilding an engine. My family has never had to take the cars into a mechanic besides a few things where we didn’t have the right equipment like an alignment. But because of him I have been able to do the same and work on all my cars, even if it’s something that I haven’t worked on before, I know enough to be able to figure it out. It has saved me so much time and money and I enjoy it. But if you don’t know how or aren’t able to work on your car, then try and find a good mechanic to be your go to guy. Even if it’s something they can’t do, If you’re a repeat customer that they know well, they will refer you to the right person.

This reminds me when my mom went to the car dealership and they estimated it would cost 1000€ "1067,21$" for a rail ignition coil change.
The part was 600€ and work 400€.
I said no get back home, i looked up the serial code on the parts,
found a factory new rail ignition coil for 89€ + 4 new sparkplugs 22€ and 4 sparkplug caps 10€, and it took me less then 20minutes to change it.
So the total price was around 121€ about 129$
Have not hadd eny issues since, 5years ago now.
The issue was that water hadd made it's way into the holes where the sparkplugs sits, and when the engine was hot, the water evaporated up to the Rail ignition coil and 2 of the sparkplug caps hadd began to rust causing missfire on all 4 cylinders.
I read that almoust all cars that has this same "Rail ignition coils system" eventually get same problems.

Dang. That is sad. I really feel for the lady. And I feel for you having to point out what's really going on and that it's not an easy fix. It's bad enough to have a car with a problem like that. But to have insult added to it by people who just take money and don't even know what they're doing, that's just wrong. Thank you for taking the time to actually show her what was wrong, and in a way that maybe she could grasp. Never know, you might hear from her again, and if not, she'll probably have good things to say about you if someone asks. Blessings to ya bro.

    No change.
I replaced the FOB battery. $3. Fired right up.

I noticed something really small that some people might miss but you did an excellent job explaining not only how things work but doing it in a way that the people around you can understand. Educating people is half the battle with this industry, the more people know, the less that shitty unethical mechanics make.

That's sad... This kinda thing happens way too often and people wonder why so many junk cars are around stinking up thier neighborhoods, rattling and stalling everywhere. Well, alot of it is just bad maintenance, but some, are because they've been wiped clean of any money to fix it because of this type of situation.

This day and age there's far and few honest Mobile mechanics out there, I ran across the few shady ones myself but when I found the one honest mechanic who was upfront get hide nothing and had a good labor fee that's the one I stayed with I rarely call for anyone to help me but when there's something I can't fix then that's when I either send it in or let someone else do the job, being honest with her and showing what is required and how much is going to cost versus her buying a good reliable used car that's honesty

This “out of timing” issue happened to me before I got more experience as a mechanic. I learned the hard way on my own car. I parts cannoned it and learned the valuable lesson of…..DIAGNOSE BEFORE BUYING! Thankfully this was my own car but it was a lesson I’m glad I learned. Ended up junking the car since I had no room to store it and throw a new engine in….it racked up tickets for being parked so again this lesson stuck with me hard
