  • Here is a short video I made of the organ intro for Chest Fever. I tend to play things in my own style so although there may be slight variations it is very close to the original. The main devices that Garth Hudson uses to create this are Inverted Fifths, B Minor Pentatonic Scale (b-d-e-f#-a-b) and B Dorian Scale (b-c#-d-e-f#-g#-a-b). Use the slow down tool and have fun learning this classic!! For more tips and tricks check out my online course at www.universeofkeys.com. Enjoy :)

    Absolutely love this. For being such an incredible organ/Piano/Accordion….etc player, Garth rarely gets the love and dissection he deserves.

    One unique thing about Garth in the 60s is that he played Lowrey organs when everyone else was playing Hammonds BTW I am glad I stumbled on to your channel. Lots of piano videos but not many rock organ channels. Very refreshing.

      Thanks for the note Ken! I am glad you dig th page. I have a very similar Lowrey to what Garth used on The Last Waltz but...... it's gonna need a lot of love before I can enjoy it ;) One day! All the best man, Mike

    OMG! I love this intro, and have wished for a lesson or short tutorial by Mike. This is almost as good! Thanks Mike!
    Please make a short tutorial on how to play this 🙏

      Hey Michael, will definitely consider it, in the meantime there are some notes in the video description about the theory behind it. I also find the slow down tool in TH-cam very useful to figure things out :) Thanks so much for watching!!

    Nice! I got myself a Hammond c3 and a Rhodes about a year and a half ago. I’ve gotten through a good portion of your material. Between you and Keith Appleton it’s been like having lessons. Truly appreciate you guys. Fan request: magic carpet ride. I’d love to hear your take on it!

    Love this... signed up for your courses as an indirect result of finding this intro and exploring your channel. Love the vibe man.
    Any chance we could get a breakdown of the solo in the middle of the song?
    Garth played, I believe, a Lowry organ with pitch bend enabled and I wanted to know if that is how he got that crazy sound on the solo of this song or if he was just playing runs that fast?

    Sounds awesome!! I've already watched like 10 times. I'll have to try the slow down tool you talk about. If you get a chance I would enjoy tutorial also.

    How do you achieve that great overdrive?

    • @UniverseofKeys
      @UniverseofKeys  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Dan, I don't use any pedals or effects to get the distortion, just my B3 and a stock 145 Leslie on 10 :) Here is a video of my set up. Cheers!! th-cam.com/video/wopTS9HNjak/w-d-xo.html
