    Had the same year base model in gray with blue interior. Loves that truck. Sold it in 1991 with 96K miles. Never had any mechanical issues other than regular maintenance. Sure wish I still had it!

      Try that, thank you. They are Toyota 4 Runner wheels. Bought them 2 weeks ago in Tacoma. Bought a new Weber for it, kinda scared to tackle that one though. Thanks again

    I had an 84 with the 2.0 Mazda engine and a 5 sp manual trans. It was my daily driver until 2000 when I used it in a dealer trade for a brand new Toyota Tundra which is still now my daily driver.

    Nice survivor!
    These respond amazingly well to removing the smog systems and tossing the Makuni/Nikki carburetor in favor of a Weber 32/36 with a Lokar 28" throttle cable. They breathe so much easier thus run 100% smoother.

    • @luigiZHP
      @luigiZHP  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clyde, thanks for commenting/watching! I would love to remove the smog system, but am not quite sure how to go about it. For one, how to deal with the hole that would be left in the exhaust manifold once you remove that pipe. And I wish I had known about the Weber carb option. About six months ago I installed a rebuilt Nikki carburetor. It's running OK, but I'm battling trying to find a intake leak. So it goes ... Have a good week!

    • @clydedenby1436
      @clydedenby1436 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@luigiZHP there are two ways to go about the exhaust system problem. First, and cheapest, is to remove the pipes from the manifold and then plugging the holes however you can. The second method involves removing the same pipes and then replacing the exhaust manifold with a header; it can be hard to find though.
      The intake can also be "fixed" in the manner or replaced with a very hard to find dual-plane Offenhauser intake made specifically for the Mazda 2.0 engine. Be careful getting one from Ebay because the Ford Pinto 4 cylinder engine is close, many more are available, but it will not work because of the difference in the mounting flange. I have one on the daily driver project that I am working on right now and am searching for another one for the truck that I am building with my 15 year old son.

      Hello David. Apologies for any confusion. My truck is not for sale, and I've updated the video description to reflect that. Just made the video to share it with others. Thanks.

      @@luigiZHP hello, thank you for the reply. I heard you say you were keeping the little truck. I just had to try. Really great find you have there. You said you found it at an auction, witch one was it, thanks David

    • @luigiZHP
      @luigiZHP  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      David, I found it at a public auction that Speeds Towing in Portland holds each week. It was a donated vehicle to benefit a local charity. That auction sells donated cars, repos, abandoned cars, impounded cars, etc. And I had been searching for over 4 years for a mini truck in great shape and not totally thrashed. Very hard to find, as I'm sure you know. And in general, these little trucks from the 80s or even 70s are getting harder and harder to find, in any condition.

      Chance, hello and thanks for watching and commenting! Appreciate it. It's always great to hear from people who "get it." It's just a simple little truck, but I'm so happy for it to be in my driveway now. I have plans to share my progress with it along the way -- I'll do my best to capture repair and refurbishment milestones on video.

      Great memory and I appreciate you sharing it. The clutches on these little trucks are easy to modulate, so I can see these being a good first manual transmission experience, for sure.

    Dad had a white one, 5 speed. Only 77 horsepower but those trucks were LIGHT. So they still got along quite nicely. There used to be one around town that someone stuffed a GM 2.8L V6 in. hahahaha! screami'n little demon that one was! HAHAHA! I know this vid is 3 years old, but still a good one to watch.

    • @luigiZHP
      @luigiZHP  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Coyote Adventures -- and yes, very, very light so the horsepower to weight ratio is just fine for truckin' around town! I've heard of guys stuffing larger engines in there -- that'd be a blast, no doubt.

    I want a model like this one I have an 89 which I like also exact same color as this one. I learned to drive stick on it. Mine also has the odd size tires. Mine is 100% stock also. The only thing is it is hard to get keys made for mine came with one key and I have 4 keys now but had to find blanks online since they have been discontinued. I’m a professional mechanic and these are super easy to work on. I have had a lot of people like mine then when they see it is a manual they became uninterested I guess because they don’t know what a good car is lol. And I have also had people complain to me about it not having a 3rd brake light but I don’t mind it not having one. The lady who had mine before me though used 5W-30 oil in it so I quickly corrected that to the 10W-40 and 10W-30 for winter.

    I have an 84 as well, long box version though. I put a 2.6L from a 1986 B2600. Same issue with the plastic door handle inset and same crack in the console plexiglass. Lots of issues with electricals though!...

    • @luigiZHP
      @luigiZHP  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Screaming Seagull, thanks for the comment! I've been lucky so far -- only electrical issue has bee a fuse that needed replacing to restore horn and hazard light operation.

    I have the same truck with even less miles, and one owner. Recently added tinted windows, and completely refurbished/replaced the air conditioning. The owner spent a lot of money in the last few years to make sure it was in perfect operating condition, An oil leak and other small things were remedied. This truck does have a radio :-)
    I tell you all of this because the owner just passed away and I need to sell it. Because it's so old but in great condition, there's no good way for me to assess a fair market value, and I wanted your input. There's a monthly cruise night in my town and I'd like to put it on display with a sales price at the beginning of September. I think my friend spent about $5-6,000 in mechanics bills over the last 5+ years and he commented that he probably spent more than the truck was worth. It's such a fun drive! I'd buy it, but it's impractical in CO due to the snowy winters and the fact it's only 2WD, and I don't drive enough miles to justify two cars :-)
    I hope to hear back from you!
