Airbox modification increases engine performance and fuel economy

  • Resolving a dusting problem with the old Africa Twin's air box configuration, I've unlocked a new level of performance and fuel economy for the Warhorse! This legendary 1992 V-Twin carbureted engine now has more torque and horsepower thanks to a better breathing air-filter system, now also less prone to getting blocked with dust.
In this video I'll explain the benefit of a positive pressure air box, and the effect it has on the air intake vacuum pressure and fuel mixture.

great airbox tip. Keen to try positive pressure on my 890AR somehow. In your riding experience in Australia, generally speaking, do you reckon most filters get dusty from following others or dust being churned up from your own back tyre?

    • @MotologyFilms
      @MotologyFilms  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

If you're bombing motos on a mx bike by yourself, the filters can get dirty just from all the dirt blasting around, railing ruts and turning back on yourself in tight corners.
Generally speaking though, if you're riding solo on flat dusty roads (adventure style) then your filter should not be dusting itself. If it is, the airbox design is seriously flawed - just like the Warhorse.
I didn't do this mod for a power increase, I did it so the airbox can access clean air - not buffeting dusty air coming off the back wheel.
The added boost in power is simply a virtue of the filter now drawing a better flow of cleaner air.
      It's that simple.

Best thing you can do on the 890AR is to fit the Powerparts prefilter and fit the plugs for the 2 drain holes, crazy how much dust gets sucked through those 2 drain holes, from the back wheel. I also run the funnel web air filter, dust actually gets past the temperature paper filter, very dusty here in South Africa.

Adam, I work for a Filtration company- we always talk about a filtration train (multiple filters of different grades, coarser to finer) where the coarser filters protect the final filters. Each filter cuts down on the particulate load going through the next filter. You can then remove/clean the coarse filter when it blocks, in this case the foam filter. Technically the foam filter would be called a Depth filter which forces particles through a Tortuous path where particles are then removed from the air flow as they impinge on the filter media. Your fine filters (the paper elements) will filter fine particles from the air but they do not have a large dirt holding capacity. A bit technical but you explain it well to Non-filter people!

You're right, over the years, some of the crazy air intake positioning has baffled me. I have always attempted to clear it up. Sometimes successfully, other time with little effect. Even on my old 1600-2.0Lt Kombies of the 80-90s running foam pod filters has contributed to noticeable running efficiencies. Keeping the dust out of the engine bay and the fresh cool air coming in, was always a factor.
Have a deposit down on a 450 Himalayan, one of the things I like is that air intake up high under the tank. One less problem to think on. It sports a paper filter, as long as I'm not trailing, all good. Can't wait to get my grubby hand on the ride. Maybe not so grubby these days. There are a few things I'm not sold on, but let's see in the next few years while I can still ride. Cheers.

Excellent advice! I am very conscious when it comes to what my dirt bike breathes (EXC500 2012) and in dusty conditions I short shift to take advantage of the torque (I also do it more regularly to keep the motor healthy for as long as I can). Lower gearing helps that too. Running 14/48 at the moment which for that bike and my riding is a golden medium. As always great clip man.

Clever mod on the airbox… that’s a massive top speed difference!😲 I knew they weren’t going to be power houses, tuned for torque and all that… but I was shocked how low the stock HP figures were in your earlier video.
Interesting point on the foam filter skin… we were discussing recently filter skins including using a pair of tights around the K&N cold air intake kits for desert use, or even round the snorkel intake. Definitely helps. Fine mesh and all that. 😅🤘
I always run the Twin Air dust and sand covers on my KTMs… people say… aww yeah, I change mine every ride bro… pffftt… I don’t. 😅 I grease the lip, grease the contact area, make sure the airbox is dripping a little and run those extra two filter skins.
When it’s hard to start in the morning when it’s been out on the truck overnight in the damp/humidity then it’s time to change.
Take the skins off and the filter still looks new. Still moist too. Can bang on a fresh sand skin if you’re caught short for time or clean filters. 😅🤘
Do it right the first time and save yourself a load of dicking about. 😅 Those skins are not for shovel hands though… wrecks them every time. 🥴 Better that than the motor though. 😂👌

It's interesting to notice how Honda have adressed this issue with the RD07 model.
Until watching this video I never knew exactly about how the airbox was designed in the RD04. The RD07 has the airbox attached to the top of the carburetors and it sucks in air at the top of the fuel tank right behind the handlebar, so it doesn't have to deal with dust thrown up from any wheel, and you also can go through deeper water. Besides, they were able to lower the seat a bit by re-locating the airbox and also put the regulator/rectifier unit on the left hand side, away from the hot muffler.
    Great video again, Adam! Thanks!

Idea for you filling the dead space instead of the foam stuffed in there:
place a plastic bag in the area you want to block.
Then gather up the bag opening and use a few squirts of expanding builders foam into the bag.
When its hard cut away excess material.
Then it can stay in there forever.
Do same in the sidepanel by using cardboard or plastic tacked in place with glue gun, then squirt foam in again. Remove cardboard and trim . Job done

Super awesome. Also, got a good chuckle when I noticed at the end of the video that your thumbnail pose includes the yard boots and a hoody. Cheers!

Excellent theory! The free flow of clean air through a motor is truly needed to make an engine breath for maximum efficiency.

And there will allways be someone that thinks they know better. People should learn to be quite and just listen for a change.

Ive done this on a few of my bikes. easy mod to get better air in. My xt660x are very restrictive, DNA side filter fixed that, I got the ktm 690 airbox lid, That made a great improvement with the evo tune. My dads klr we removed the snorkel and made more holes, My xr400m we drilled 6 1" holes on the side. A built motor so needed the extra air. on our dirt bikes we always remove the little rubber snorkel but no holes as we cross water. easy mod for an small boost and a large boost with a tune.

“Pores” is the word your were searching for. My Rottweiler intake in the 990 does that pre oiled foam cover thing too. 👏

I ride 2016 Africa Twin. Never liked the dual pleated paper filters and didn't want to go to K&N oiled. Watched what you did and ended up finding Uniflow filters there in Australia that sells and foam pre-filter with a very minor mod to the snorkels. I feel the 16 Africa Twin has a great air intake position just needed a little more for dirt. And now I feel I'll have that. Thanks for the thought process of finding a solution.

You may add fiberglass to form your custom air-box extention around the foamed pieces, and seal it off with glued-on sliced gas-tubes, or just cut out a larger flexible rubber item forming that air-box and cable-tieing it to the frame, or a rabbit-net wired support structure.
I’d add a blackened fine grid to your 2 air-box holes to avoid stones being venturied onto your air-filter.

whaddya reckon, a 3d printed funnel piece that channels the air directly from the 2 ports on the side fairing to the airbox intake? or some flexible vacuum cleaner hose from the airbox direct to the open ports on the fairing? ala Kawasaki ZXR750 ram air?
