    This is great. There are so many free resources out there. But it's surprising how many motion "designers" out there don't have a clue about design. There's so many disciplines to mograph, but if you had to pick one I'd say learn good design. If the design is poor it doesn't matter how well animated it is. But loads of great tips here. I'd also add showing your work to other people. Either a mentor or find a community where you'll get honest feedback. Nobody does their best work in a vacuum. You need bounce off other people and if you're new get feedback which helps push you and make the work better

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely agree with you about learning design! I've also come across this problem with other motion designers, which is why I talk about it and suggest design books. Its one of the most important things in actually being a good motion designer! And yes also to showing your work to other people. Always a good idea in any creative field to get others feedback.

    Some great tips for a self-taught animator like myself, thank you! It's interesting that you mentioned bloated files, as this is something I struggle with. I use a combination of photoshop with davinci resolve for animating, and I find that if I use any textures in my photoshop files the final animated file is often gigantic even without any effects, whereas without textures, even 4k files with masses of added effects end up very light. If you have any tips about this that would be great!

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've found that with textures you should make them as small/compressed as possible before you bring them into photoshop (obviously maintaining the quality that's necessary). Sometimes they're like 4k, but you dont need it that big for what you're using it for. Then when it's in photoshop, make sure you're only using the sections you need/that are visible and trim off anything unnecessary from the layer.

    Hey I would love to hear more about briefs. Examples of how it looks like, what the process is etc...

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OK, Cool! I can do a video on that, the process and examples. It's a little different when working in an agency or working as a freelancer, and it does vary between companies and individuals . Like, a brief from someone who is creating a startup and needs a video for their social media, is different or, say, and agency who needs something for a commercial. But for the most part, they'll give a written brief, or have a meeting where you'll need to take notes, but a written brief is more common and preferable so there's nothing forgotten or left out and it can be referred back to. It'll cover things like if there's a corporate identity to be followed or a look and feel, and other things like references and stuff. But I think that's a great topic for a video, so I'll do one in the future about that.

    This is pretty sensible advice. I struggled with 3d character animation and never had the patience to clean up my 2d animation either, hence didn't master either one to get a starter job despite having studied it in junior college. Lately I started learning after effects and figured it was a better investment career wise since I know some coding too. But like you said you NEED a solid design knowledge which is something I don't exactly have. Plus making money as a good graphic designer is probably a little easier too given the lower barrier to entry. I have a decent grip on animation in general given my years of struggling with it BUT a good design foundation is KING for animated logos and stuff.

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Dave, I'd recommend a machine with at least 32GB of RAM - After Effects needs 16GB to run but it' will be difficult to work with if you only have that. It should ideally have a 64 bit multi core CPU. I'd also recommend that it have an SSD. And a GPU with at least 8GB VRAM. You'll need an HD display. A tablet would be good in a lot of cases when it comes to designing elements, but it's more of a case of personal preference really and depends on what types of graphics you're creating. If it's a lot of digitally drawn elements, then it would be beneficial but I don't really use my tablet that much myself when I'm working on animating motion graphics, it's used more if I'm designing stuff in Illustrator or Photoshop and actually drawing things.

    For someone with basic IT knowledge, interest in designs and drawings and average IQ to learn, how long do you believe it might take for someone to become a good Motion Designer? (may be how many hours or learning - LOLL like a pilot's flying hours)

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure, there isn't really like a standard amount of time...it also depends on how good you mean.... it would also mean learning design at the same time, because that's important in being a *good* motion designer. Some people just have a knack and take to it like a duck to water. It could take some people 6 months, some people a year - to become an actual GOOD one, in my opinion, it would be several years. But you could become quite competent in 6 months, if you were practicing every single day. I really can't give you a time frame or amount of hours. It also depends on people's natural talent.

      I once asked my acting coach the same question ..How long willl it take to get good...and She said...you'll never know, but when it happens you'll know it...because you'll feel it....It can take as long as the sacrifice and committment you give it......the time it takes to become a good motion designer depends on soooo many underlying factors...none of which have anything to do with your IQ...If you have the interest in motion design...you have a good start, maintain that interest and staying motivated is the challenge. getting really good at motion design could take a lifetime..I guess the real question is how long does it take to become good enough to get work. As RobynO points out it could take 6 month, it could take a year, it also depends how much time you have to devote to study...and on what area of motion design you chose to endeavor. if you're doing typography kinetics it could take 6 months..if its hi end 3D product visualizations with animated breakaways and particle simulations it could take longer..decide first which area you would like to work in. I am an ArchViz designer just now broadening my scope by getting into Product Viz...so it'll take me less time than most. yet in ArchViz its a entirley different workflow. I think overall RobynO has the best advice..decide what area you want to pursue if yo chose to become a generalist it will definetly take you ,longer to get good at all the different intricacies of each industry. Give yourself at least a year or 2 to enjoy the discovery process...and let the skill set evolve through the process before pursuing work. ... Hope this helps

      I film on my phone and it has a weird video stabilization thing that I haven't figured out how to turn off. Whenever I do a big hand movement it seems to think the camera is moving and tries to stabilize it.

    Do you expect Motion Design will die in the coming years?

    • @RobynO_O
      @RobynO_O  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I dont think we'll need to worry about that for a long time. It's getting more and more popular as a way to make digital media stand out. Obviously a lot more stuff is becoming automated and AI is getting better and better, but it still has a long way to go in terms of creativity and producing something polished and bespoke to what a client needs. You can tell the difference, for instance, between something that has been animated by an experienced animator, and something done with Mixamo, for instance. Machine learning still has a long way to go before it makes our jobs redundant.

    first / get high end pc with lot of ram and min. 2 Rtx gpu it will depends on what you will doing what type of AD.
    Remember one in AD world every sec. is important so you better make it minimalistic.
    Next get real program Houdini or C4d. Not some shit like blender or 3dsmax...
    Get plugins for render vray, octane...
    first get practice in modeling than in motion graphic.
    Dont be like her, fuck illustrator vision, for real AD you need to practice with glossy materials not only with matt and 3d is more important than ever.
