When you said, "What would Christine McConnell do," I thought, "She'd probably bake individual shingles out of gingerbread, each with a unique design copied directly from historically-accurate examples of Victorian wallpaper, but with her own spooky spin of including a bat or a mouse in the corner of each, only visible with a magnifying glass that she.cast out of poured sugar...." and then I got tired just from thinking about the work that goes into her (and your) projects and got a snack.
As someone who is a baker but also does decoden, here's some tips: The icing tip goes inside of the bag lol. You cut the tip of the bag off, put the icing tip inside and then put your silicone in the bag. You can twist the top of the bag, rubber band it, zip tie it etc to keep the silicone from oozing out the top and it also gives you more control of the bag with applying pressure. If you ever want to add color to your silicone you can use mica or oil based paint, no water-based colors because it will cause the silicone to seize up and then you cant pipe it!
Welcome to a Rachel Maksy video where we all ask ourselves, "What will she turn brown today?" (with the occasional green thing) 😆 It turned out great! Also, try putting the icing tip inside the baggie.
OR double bag! Put the tip on the outside of the caulk filled bag and then put those into another (maybe bigger) bag. This can help with the removal of the tip as well!
Tip if you ever find yourself doing icing like this again: cut a hole in the pastry bag/sandwich bag and put the tip inside the bag so the tip of it comes out the hole, then twist the bag above the icing/caulk and squeeze with your hand on top of the bulb of icing/caulk. You'll get more control this way and won't have to hold the tip in place! This is how I was taught to ice cake/cookies when I worked in a bakery. :)
I imagine she tried it that way but had caulking come out around the tip because of it's thickness. Someone had the idea to double bag. Put the caulk in its own bag and then use another to hold the tip in place.
I love that Rachel does the same thing I do when trying something new. Dont practice on a blank piece, or start in the back/less noticeable areas. No, instead start right on the biggest most centered and eye catching area and just dive right in. 😂
I just started watching and I am so filled with affection for Rachel, looking completely overwhelmed by the size of this monstrosity and yet also giddy with the prospect of gingerbreadifying it. Rachel Maksy, Patron Saint of Chaotic Crafters.
You could display your gingerbread house on your porch for the season. I think it would be cute. It turned out great, by the way. The appropriate amount of whimsy.

Same here, but I watch them on both the good and the not so good days - she always brings me joy. wishing you guys peace and calm of mind this christmas! ❤
I love that her content fully embraces the total jank of crafting. So many youtubers have the perfect set up and churn out perfect pieces. It is nice to see the journey and the learning going from doesn't know what one is doing to sort of knows what one is doing
Oh my goodness, I am a Rachel Lynne myself! Indeed, there was something in the air in those early 90s. (Also, thank you, as always, for bringing such warmth and goodness into the world through being you!)
If you ever get to the point that you have some of your projects you no longer wish to house, you could always do a sort of charity auction thing where you auction off things with proceeds going to a chosen charity! (By no means something you ever have to do, just an idea! ☺️) Also, the dollhouse is absolutely delightful 🤌🏻❤️
I love it so much!!!! Heads up about the windows. I make doll rooms and accessories, and you can use clear plastic packaging or old clear take out containers for windows. To get a melty distorted effect you can add a tiny bit of paint to some mod podge or clear glue and paint it on the plastic in swirly patterns. When it drys is looks like tinted uneven glass. You can also do multiple thick layers for a water effect!
I have often mentioned to my husband how amazing Rachel's videos and projects are, but I made him watch this one all the way through. He loved it and he has lived Nick's experience with things like this so many times. "Where are we going to put this ?" And yet they still encourage and support our crazy creative endeavors! I told him I had been thinking I need a Christmas House.... (I did a haunted house make over last year )
I love how you're like, "Why do I do the things I do?" and I immeidately thought, "because you have the tools, the talent, and the money to do it. And there are worse ways to spend your time. At least with this stuff you are enriching the internet and world."
Rachael's reaction to the size of the dollhouse was my reaction to every project I undertake. Super simple no problems at... OH MY GOSH. So relatable and delightful.
It's so big because the Frozen dolls it's meant for are 1:6 scale aka "playscale" like a regular Barbie, while traditional dollhouse scale is 1:12. It's literally twice as big as a traditional dollhouse.
I was on hold with Joann Fabric customer service for 1 hour. I listened to 4 loops of crafting tips. To keep you hot glue from getting stringy, freeze your glue sticks. Only remove them as you need them
As our beloved Peter Jackson would say, "Bigature". Absolutely blown away by the whole thing and ridiculously delighted with your peppermint pati-o design ❤ Hope you get well soon!
This is becoming such a cool trend! I drove to another province to pick up one of these houses with my friend back in October so she could make an awesome haunted house for Halloween. It turned out amazing!! I love how this is catching on 🔥
Love this! We think some garland wrapping the columns would help, as might a tree on the patio, and maybe a row of colored lights around the trim between the floors. Gumdrops work, too, 'tho!
I’m loving that you’re using the Frozen castle as the base for this project 🥰🥰 it’s so perfect and it turned out BEAUTIFULLY!!! So festive and creative too!
Wow it's a big house, you weren't kidding about that! I'm always seeing things I like at the thrift store but then asking myself that essential question "where am I going to put it?" And your gingerbread house turned out great! Just putting the initial brown coat over the plasticky colors did a lot for it. The way you did the icing and details maybe doesn't have the obsessive precision of Christine McConnell, but it gave this project a beautiful handmade aesthetic that really tones down the cold, mass-produced feel of the original dollhouse.
I find it absolutely insane and inspiring how someone finds the time and energy to do projects this detailed on this scale on a regular basis and it always manages to end up Pinterest worthy. I enjoy your videos so much 🫶🏻💕
This made my heart sing! I love doing playscale size dioramas, (Barbie) and my base piece for the main part of the house was this size. I went with the Addams Family theme and built a separate sections for kitchen, library, playroom and then on the other end, a complete graveyard with fencing, tomb and gargoyles. Finished out at 13 1/2 feet. 😂
as someone who likes to sometimes embark on crazy projects but also struggles with being scared of troubling anyone else with it, especially a partner, seeing the dynamic between you and Nick is so healing -- it honestly almost makes me cry how accepting and helpful he is and how you seem to strike a healthy balance between wanting to do something and considering other people
Perfect timing! I get to watch Rachel turn a dollhouse into a gorgeous gungerbread mansion while I work on crocheting a gingerbread man pillow as a Secret Santa gift for a coworker!! 🎄🎅🎁🍪
When you said you needed a "simple" project in part because you have a cold... I was like......😮 That would be a huge project for me and it sure wouldn't happen when I had a cold. lol That's why you're so lovable. You do these things to brighten our days no matter what! ❤
“New addition to the Hansel and Gretel Cinematic Universe: First, they were Witch Hunters. NOW THEY ARE… HOUSE FLIPPERS!” (I couldn’t get that idea out of my head any other way than inflicting it on others, sorry…)
Hey Rachel - Piping tip when using a pastry bag. The zip lock bag is a great idea. Next time, cut your hole in the corner first, then put your piping tip INSIDE the bag with the tip wedged into the little hole you cut. Make sure it's snug. Hope that helps you with a future project!
I tried waiting until Saturday for a while, have myself a cozy moment with a snack so I could soak in all the loveliness….. but it was so painful not to click on the video and scroll past to something else. The thumbnail taunting me with the promise of whimsy. Now I just curl up in bed with some fluffy pillows, extra blankets and my kitty cat, letting myself enjoy as soon as the video pops up.
I hope to have the energy to do this one day and not just buy the doll house and the paint, then just have the doll house and paint laying around for the next few years
I am in love with this project and this video!! My ‘aesthetic vibe(?), is ‘Grandma’s House meets The Addams Family’…also…anything in miniature ROCKS! 😉😂 Happy Gingerbread Christmas! ❤🎄🤎
The fact that Rachel put makeup on, (let alone did a whole freakin project), while she had a cold, utterly astounds me. Girl put on a red lip with a runny nose, I could *never*.
That dollhouse is huge and looks so cool. I originally got into June's Journey because of the video you did with Bernadette Banner and Morgan Donner where you switched hairstyles in Boston. Still playing it, and the journal is very cool.
*Watches as everyone runs to find their own castle to make into a gingerbread home*. Love love love. That is so much fun and a cute home for all your little creatures. :-)
So cute! It was out of the box getting such a big doll house. For any crafters wondering. In the future for the faux glass if you want it more clear sugar crystal try matte mod podge. Put down some plastic wrap in a controlled container. Pour in the modpodge and let it sit. It may take a bit to firm up. You can add paint, food coloring, or flour to make it more opaque. Happy crafting! Can't wait to see what Rachel comes up with next
... no. Bad commenter. Bad. As someone who follows several dollhouse makers that is years of work to do right turning whats meant to be a fun easy project into a major time and energy eater. As awesome as it would be to see I would feel so bad for her.
@@krose6451 It could be a whole series though. A video each for each piece of furniture and then a room video. Long term project in smaller don't over do it chunks.
True, though generally have to be comfortable with having a permanent UFO. They are rabbit holes of awesome ideas neverending. I have a 1/12 scale bjd in my dollhouse, who sits wrapped in a Kleenex for a dress in her sewing room with no electricity or finished floors, and occasionally I peer in to dream.
wouldn't be a Rachel project if it wasn't overwhelmingly complicated and ultimately successful, that's why we love you. even the ones you think could use "a little something" are great in my book.
Did a full on happy flappy hands stim at the reveal. It looks amazing! I'm in awe. I love the handmade look. It makes it look more like a real gingerbread house!
Display it in your dining or living room for the holidays. Find a side table or stand to house it.Then wrap it in protective whatever and shove it into the closet or attic until next year. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Because it's lovely and will make a precious decor item and conversation piece.
Rachel, I was 4:53 into this video when I realized I was positively grinning from ear to ear. You're the best. As a basis of comparison, I built a dollhouse from scratch for a special little girl and to see you full-on body tackle this project is awesome. You GO girl!!!
A house? Nay good sir, now it's a gingerbread chalet xD I absolutely love how this turned out and now I want to make one of my own (maybe a tad smaller though, just a smidge lol). The only thing I think I'd add is a little "snow" on the railings between the chocolate posts; just so that it stands out some, like your piping is wildly good and I'm surprised you didn't go ham with it lol 12/10 Rachel build, would recommend to a friend
with my experience of piping with both frosting bags and ziploc bags, i find that the zipoc plastic is a lot stretchier than piping bags which makes it harder to control the pressure when squeezing out frosting (or caulk, lol). the ability to easily close ziploc bags is nice, but a twist tie or rubber band works to do the same on a frosting bag. this was such a fun project to watch! what a perfect doll house for this style of gingerbread house. i love the dry-brushed white to bring it the extra mile of looking-like-a-cookie-ness while also bringing out the brick texture. gorgeous!!!!
5:45 okay… can we please appreciate the subtitles here saying that “Christine grunts” implying that the spirit of Christine was just watching her do this. 😂
So freakin' adorable!!! My hubby and I love watching your videos. Also, the frosting caulking will be a lot easier to apply if you put the decorative tip inside the bag so it pokes out the hole, but that the hole isn't so big that it pushes the whole way through.
Loved the video and "easier" break projects like this! Perhaps in the future some candy cane and/or gingerbread furniture could be made to continue to decorate it? Love you Rachel!
Girl, I was so anxious that I couldn't sleep, and now I'm just happy I don't have to be anxious about my own problems. You've distracted me and helped me calm the f down. For that (and just simply being yourself) I thank thee
Needed something whimsy today thank you Rachel, my doggo got diagnosed with the big C today. Gonna love him for what ever time left we have him. Hug your pets people ❤
Definitely be kind to yourself, because the smaller-ish (time wise) projects are just as fun for us as the monster projects. I just love your creativity and your mega-talent.
You did a very good job on that HUGE doll house! I was a little sceptical when I saw it was made out of plastic, but it turned out looking FABULOUS! Rachel does it again! (clapping and whistling) Thanks for making my day a little more festive! ~Janet in Canada
I absolutely love this! If you wanted to make windows that look like sugar but would keep I’d melt a thin layer of hot glue onto some wax paper then peel it off and cut it to size. You did such a good job that house is huge!
Even the first layer of paint made a huge difference in the aesthetic. It also helped dull some of the plastic shine. The rest was just icing *haha😅* on the cookie and brought it all together. Thank you for sharing ❤
This looks so cool, Rachel! And I'm happy you're thinking better for yourself with the result of your projects. Honestly, I think the very fact that it exists overtakes the small mistakes that you see in it. It exists! And that's better than it being Conceivably Perfect but still an idea. :D
Okay after the Gandalf transformation, this is my favourite video!! From the captions saying "Christine grunts" during the initial spray paint to the absolute VIBE of "an old crone who lives in the woods and collects berries and snowy branches and twigs"
for piping with an icing bag, it helps a lot if you twist the back end and then hold it by the twisted part so none of the icing comes out. theres also special bands for icing bags which help with this problem as well. hope this helps!!
It's adorable. If you want to add white or silver glitter to it (I know, I know, glitter is cursed) it would give it more of a frosted snowy look. Definitely a good addition to your someday coffee shop :)
The imperfections make it more gingerbread house-esque. Very few people have gingerbread houses that look like plastic. there are always some imperfections with icing and the texture of the cookie and little differences in candies so the imperfections help it look better actually .
I had no idea that I needed a gingerbread doll's house until today. *Opens marketplace... 😂 But seriously this is so stinking cute ❤ Hope you get better soon
This was such a fun “little” project!! I’d honestly love to see more of these, especially if they’re easier on the brain for you!!! And that Jue’s Journey giveaway is so cute as well ❤
This is fun & whimsical! I had dollhouses repainted to be haunted, but repainting it to be gingerbread is so cute. I want to find a dollhouse & do this.
Could also use clear sheets of mylar, or even windows removed from pasta boxes could work. Then paint over em or use an alcohol-based pigment like sharpies to tint/frost the windows

She actually did a gingerbread house copy of the Winchester mansion. Utterly glorious.
Too accurate 😂
Accurate 😂
Where is the lie 😭
I got tired half way through reading this.
"you took a DNA test and Bob is infact your uncle" is probably the funniest line ive ever heard
The idea of Rachel being like "ah yes I will do a small project! A little gingerbread house!" And then receiving a huge castle is so funny 😂
As someone who is a baker but also does decoden, here's some tips: The icing tip goes inside of the bag lol. I didn't get how it was related to parchment paper, could you explain it to me ?
@@lolabee5238 "bob's your uncle" is a saying, kind of like a "and the next thing you know..." sort of thing at the end of a sentence
If you put the piping tip inside the snipped bag before you fill it with "icing" and then it stays in place while you pipe.
Came here to say the same 💕
I was internally screaming that as she was struggling 😅
Came to say the same thing
The former cake decorator in me was screaming. It still came out so cute though.
Maybe attach the tip directly to the caulking gun
Tip if you ever find yourself doing icing like this again: cut a hole in the pastry bag/sandwich bag and put the tip inside the bag so the tip of it comes out the hole, then twist the bag above the icing/caulk and squeeze with your hand on top of the bulb of icing/caulk. As a fan of dolls, vintage architecture, and whimsy, I ADORED watching this project come to life! Excellent work!
1:37 love the opera - rose duet, vienna
I do hope to find a dollhouse like that, give it wizardry or make it spooky for a Halloween haunted house.
Look for Victorian houses from San Francisco. They have some great ones.
I hope to have the energy to do this one day and not just buy the doll house and the paint, then just have the doll house and paint laying around for the next few years
@@SerenityVonSavage : I hear THAT!! 😉😂
I am in love with this project and this video!! My ‘aesthetic vibe(?), is ‘Grandma’s House meets The Addams Family’…also…anything in miniature ROCKS! 😉😂 Happy Gingerbread Christmas! ❤🎄🤎
I love another episode of the "Rachel makes tiny wimsical things" series! But this time.... Not so tiny
That was the first video I ever saw her in ! (I live south of Boston) I've been following all 3 ever since, but Rachel is the favorite 😍
I can't believe how the piping changes the look from Nordic to Victorian in an instant!
*Watches as everyone runs to find their own castle to make into a gingerbread home*. Love love love. That is so much fun and a cute home for all your little creatures. :-)
I love that it's reusable.
Next step, make each room Victorian themed and make miniatures. ❤
I never would have known that this started out as a Frozen castle if you hadn’t told me. So cute and whimsical ❤
The only thing I think I'd add is a little "snow" on the railings between the chocolate posts; just so that it stands out some, like your piping is wildly good and I'm surprised you didn't go ham with it lol
12/10 Rachel build, would recommend to a friend
with my experience of piping with both frosting bags and ziploc bags, i find that the zipoc plastic is a lot stretchier than piping bags which makes it harder to control the pressure when squeezing out frosting (or caulk, lol). the ability to easily close ziploc bags is nice, but a twist tie or rubber band works to do the same on a frosting bag. this was such a fun project to watch! what a perfect doll house for this style of gingerbread house. i love the dry-brushed white to bring it the extra mile of looking-like-a-cookie-ness while also bringing out the brick texture. gorgeous!!!!
5:45 okay… can we please appreciate the subtitles here saying that “Christine grunts” implying that the spirit of Christine was just watching her do this. 😂
Wow, that's big, but equally adorable.❤ And, snow...magical. ❄️❄️❄️
I love watching dollhouses be repainted, you dont know how excited i was to see this pop up 😂❤
I was blown away by how FAST she did it ! 😮
Hug your pets people ❤
Sending a hug. It's so hard when pet's get sick.
The respect to AC the bringer of our Candy tunes of the early 2000's was beautiful.
I think colored cellophane would also work for the windows. If you want more of a stained glass/old fashioned candy look. ❤
It's adorable. If you want to add white or silver glitter to it (I know, I know, glitter is cursed) it would give it more of a frosted snowy look. Definitely a good addition to your someday coffee shop :)
This is so adorable!! I love the peppermint tiles especially. I also really enjoy the long-setup puns. Thanks Rachel - this was very happy-making. ❤️
Beautiful! And it lasts tear after year. A little greenery one year. Tiny outdoor lights another.
But seriously this is so stinking cute ❤ Hope you get better soon
This was such a fun “little” project!! I’d honestly love to see more of these, especially if they’re easier on the brain for you!!! And that Jue’s Journey giveaway is so cute as well ❤
I know it wasn’t done specifically for me (though I really think it was) I knew you would enjoy it. I’m glad you had fun! Merry Gingerbread!
Loved all the puns, as per usual. And loved the Aaron Carter shoutout. ❤
This is fun & whimsical! I had dollhouses repainted to be haunted, but repainting it to be gingerbread is so cute. I want to find a dollhouse & do this.
Tip for the windows:
A lot of people will use sheets of gelatin as the glass in real gingerbread houses 🥰
Could also use clear sheets of mylar, or even windows removed from pasta boxes could work. Then paint over em or use an alcohol-based pigment like sharpies to tint/frost the windows
Such a cute and fun project! I think a Christmas tree in the left patio would be perfect 👌 🎄
