    I miss the times when devs wanted to make good games that just happened to become esports later.

    • @ianescher1798
      @ianescher1798 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      It depends on the game. Most of the franchise didn't have esports in mind at the start, like quake cs scbw dota. But a lot of the biggest / best esports games had it from the start, like sc2 csgo lol

      Things have changed since Stacraft 2, esports grew big (outside of korea ofc) and now it's clearly something you have to take into consideration as it's part of many games (multiplayer oriented, and competitive). Also, mass internet did change a lot of stuff in this industry in general.

    • @Frodonsake24
      @Frodonsake24 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ianescher1798 their were literaly no big esports back when Starcraft 2 was out. In fact, it's SC2 that made eSports such a big thing (outside of korea). It's pretty obvious why devs now take that into consideration. Before SC2, esports was on a very small scale (well, again, outside of korea ofc). SC2 was developped with Esports in mind. Not the same way we do it now, but they took it into consideration just because...they knew how big Brood War was in korea. And they remember about their own history, on how wrong it went with Kespa. They wanted to avoid that situation again (probably because they wanted to benefit from esports and be part of it). So....saying SC2 wasn't developed with esports in mind is not true.

    I hope we will have a clear starting point for this game that esports (grassroots or not) can use as a beginning. By starting point I mostly mean that all factions have acces to T1/T2/T3 units, that all units are fully painted and animated.

    Esports is marketing. This is Frost Giant's best way to promote the game, and it's logical for a game dev in 2024 to think about competitions on a game designed to be competitive.

    • @Bagginsess
      @Bagginsess หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      What you think an alpha is, is what a beta actually is. A beta is not feature complete like the fake preorder betas for things like CoD. Also early access doesn't mean it stops being a beta.

    I like that they have a concrete plan instead of wasting the early hype and scrambling towards a bad event. If the game doesnt take off the esport doesnt matter anyway so better be prepared. I hope they talk w Esports World Cup and/or the rumored Esports Olympics so they can secure some nice external esports funding

    I really like Frost Giant's approach to eSports, plan for the best by putting the framework in with a couple of big tournies, some regional brackets, a korean comp, and a grassroots "in game" tournament system. Then the company stands back and see what happens. If it's successful, great! The basic framework is already there. If it fails, then they've not really invested a huge amount (not like an Overwatch League)

      This is clearly not their main focus and nothing comparable to Overwatch. We don't even know how much money they do invest on esports. To me it sounds like they're looking at parteners without having to spend all the cash themselves. Its part of the marketting of the game, and their goal always has been to create a long term, game as a service, product. It's not a coincidence if they did talk about that in korea, where the esports market is way more developed and you can find partners and sponsorship. I mean, so far,, from what we have seen, they clearly have a pretty well thought, long terme plan, without taking too much risk (other than, trying to make a big RTS is kinda of risk in it of itself).

    people will complain about anything. independent tournaments are already being successfuly held, yet people want to claim that frost giant is somehow wrong in embracing the idea, as if everything they've worked on in the past wasn't a successful esport. it is a post hoc/historian fallacy to claim that because some companies have failed in the past by focusing on esports (as if that is somehow the only cause for a company/game to fail lol), that frost giant is doomed to the same fate. unfortunately for pretty much everyone making these claims, they are ill-informed.

    I think FG is approaching esports in a healthy way: not trying to prop up a league, but supporting the tournaments that do exist. Normally I would say it's too early to be looking into funding esports, but with SG being seen somewhat as a spiritual SC3, there will inevitably be interest in a competitive scene early on. Whether or not it has staying power isn't a sure thing, but an early scene feels like a sure enough thing that it seems worth planning for it.
