    If I will have that bacteria on my tank I'll just reset my tank. Remove all water, change decoration. No more headache unless it happens on a planted tank, that's a different story.

    good to see the tank looking better! And it seems that smaller crayfish hasn't been fully eaten yet, still on its back and showing tny bits of signs of life (kicking one foot several times in vain)
    Could use more of anything so i wouldn't pass on some new little crayfish if you get some in the minnow trap.

    The cloudy water It could be from a bacteria die off. What you are seeing are the destroyed bacteria particles suspended in the water. Kind of the reverse of a bacterial bloom which can cause the same cloudy look.

    Honest upload as always. I’ve just had an awful Columnaris outbreak that took out 2/3rds of my fish in 48 hrs. ( including my beloved GBR) I’m devastated :-(. Some of my survivors I moved to
    QT. I couldn’t treat as the recommended meds aren’t available here and will take 3 weeks to get here.
    Soooo
    I’ve purchased a new tank and got rid of everything. Does anyone know if I have to throw my filter too? Can I continue to use it? Shall I clean the housing and throw the media? Obviously cycling a new filter will endanger my survivors and I don’t have enough room to QT everybody whilst it cycles. I’m just about ready to quit the whole thing.

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know what to tell you about that. According to my research, Columnaris is always in your tank, just waiting til the conditions are right. I don't know if I believe that or not, but that's what I read. Don't know how helpful that was.

    • @brianatonicarys
      @brianatonicarys 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dan Hiteshew thanks for replying anyways. I appreciate it

    • @brianatonicarys
      @brianatonicarys 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And I don’t believe for a second it’s always present. My outbreak happened about 36hrs after I added an expensive red tailed leopard pleco that died within about 12 hours of getting in there. ( I didn’t QT it. big lesson learned there). Little too much coincidence for my liking. I just want it all out as I’m terrified of spreading it to my other tanks. This filter problem is frying my brain. I always seed from the infected tank so I’m stuck now with fish separated and quarantined all over the place. I wish I had a hospital tank to retreat into!

      @@brianatonicarys Wow. That's a tough spot to be in. I know that stuff can wipe out a tank in days. I'd play everything on the side of caution and wouldn't use that filter material in other tanks.

    • @brianatonicarys
      @brianatonicarys 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dan Hiteshew I agree. It’s just not worth infecting a new tank is it.
      Can I ask you a question? My male GBR and some lampeyes are in like a 60ltr tub with a heater and airstone and he’s doing well. How long do you think I could keep him in there while I cycle another filter?
      I know you’re not an expert and I’m sorry for being a pain but I have nobody else around me to ask and I don’t trust my LFS, they’re next to useless.

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly

      A teaspoon per gallon is the most I'd use if you have fish in the tank. Plants may even struggle a bit with that much salt.

    Had to stop the video for a quick question...
    Where did you read to use one tablespoon per gallon? I have only found a max amount of about one tablespoon per five gallons.
    I think 1.5 tablespoons per 5 gallons seems good, but one per gallon?

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure of the actual lnks, but a tablespoon per gallon is about the upper limit of still calling it freshwater. I've done that much on many occassions.

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The article does say 1 tbs to 5 gal, but it also says this:
      You can see from the diagram that the best results were achieved at a dose of 3000 milligrams per liter; based on the weight of salt this converts .67 teaspoons per liter or 2.54 teaspoons per gallon. This is Much more salt than many aquarists commonly believe a Catfish can tolerate.
      Since it's talking about "salt sensitive" fish at nearly a Tbs/Gal, I have no fear for my fish. (again, I've done this much salt before.)

      Now I'm nervous, despite doing this before.

      Your an honest man. Don't worry too much. I have read aquaculture articles regarding catfish, and they often use crazy amounts of salt with very good results for their purposes.

  • @LongIslandFishGuy

    Anyone looking to buy aquarium salt for their aquarium check out Lowe's or Home Depot for "water softening salt". You can buy a 40 pound bag for $10. It's like 99.9% salt and works like a charm!

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You just have to be careful when measuring it. The big chunks don't have the same volume or weight as the fine ground table style salt.

    • @khachaturian100
      @khachaturian100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you say they don't have the same volume or weight... I can understand the volume, but why shouldn't they be dosed equally by weight?
      Taking the caking agent into account, shouldn't pure rock salt or kosher salt equal table salt?
      You are a great teacher BTW. I've been in the hobby since the late 90s, but I went off of it since around 2006 and your videos over the past while have really inspired me to plot a return to it, except this time I'll be far more educated.
      Thanks. Liked.

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I meant that a cup od table salt will not be the same amout of salt as if you use a cup of big chunks. I suppose if you weigh a cup of table salt, then weighed out the same amount of rock salt, you'd be ok.

    Do you reckon a black moor and 7 cardinals in a 20g tank is enough for me to not have to upgrade tank if I do around ~70% weekly water changes and have a decent amount of really hardy plants like java moss and java fern?

    • @DanHiteshew-oneandonly
      @DanHiteshew-oneandonly  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Black Moors need pretty big tanks when full grown. I think you'd get a long time out of it, but eventually, if the fish grows to full size, I'd say a 40 breeder wpould be about right. (they get over 4 inches and their shape means they are a huge bioload)

    • @jberry7640
      @jberry7640 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Hiteshew yeah if he gets over 4-5" I'll get him a 40 gallon although I don't know if he will get that big for the next 3-4 years he isn't a high quality fish but he's like a little puppy

  • @cjandauntieyaya1446

    Ah, you got to salting... I suggest increasing temps to above 80 to make sure that the parasites/bacteria leave the cold-water fish bodies.

    • @masonsmarkstoneveneercorp120
      @masonsmarkstoneveneercorp120 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Columnaris is a warm water bacteria. Lower the temp to 75 and that will help kill it. Also.... It's 1 TBSP per 5 gal NOT per gal.
