Norms advice helped me save the last of my breeding stock! It wiped through most everything before I was finally able to correctly identify and treat it. Now I know what to look for in the unlucky event that Im faced with columnaris again. I had quarantined, salted, and started a popularly recommended med trio- everything youre "supposed" to do when acquiring new fish and still ended up with this. Now I follow Norms quarantine procedures (another video).
I had 2 perfectly healthy tanks before purchasing fish from petco. They wiped 2 of my tanks leaving me 3 sirviors in my big >>wiped from ick and possible columnaris
Thank you so much for all this information! It would be really helpful if you could add a list all of the meds discussed in the description or a pinned comment.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I thought I'm gonna cry coz my betta got a white patch on his left side. He's good community boi along with my recently treated from ich fat cardinal tetras. The fact that my betta is born with a white upper lip got me also paranoid if I won't able to spot one of the symptoms.
The betta I bought from Thailand came sick. I put him in a 1 gallon bowl with 1 tablespoon of salt. I added Ick X and dosed API Fin and tail. Within 1 day, the fish was very active and looked great. I kept him in the hospital bowl for 7 days. Changing 30% of water and made sure I kept the salt at same level of 1 tablespoon per gallon.

Yeah, I lost a fish because I think that my dog scared off the postlady. She brought me the package a day past delivery date, and looked shocked/acted defensive when I said ``oh goody my fish;'' she said ``dead fish?'' I said ``no, live fish.'' She: ``they should tell us;'' I pointed out that it said all over the box, ``live fish.'' Postlady at this point shrugged shoulders. But I then recalled my dog had ran down the driveway, barking, the previous day. Murphy's Law; our dog isn't vicious; he's never stopped anyone actually approaching before. Usually they know to stop and let him sniff them, and then everything's cool.
Just lost all of my male guppies in 2 different tanks. Glad I found this video. I've been treating woth maracyn but ill switch meds tomorrow when I can get some sulfaplex. Thanks Norm!
Thank you so much for this information! A few months ago I got my first beta, and I quickly got SUPER attached to him, and all was well until about two weeks ago, when he started looking sick as though he had fin rot, but it didn't seem right. After watching this while desperately trying to figure out what was wrong with my little buddy, I realized it was columnaris, got some sulfaplex, and although he's definitely not cured, he's beginning to look a little healthier!!!
I want to say - With my very first ever experience with Columnaris - my fish, all/none of them, had a single solitary symotom. They just. Started. DYING. By the "end" of the first bout, which was just 4½ days mind you, I'd lost 28 fish. Sudden inexplicable deaths was actually the symptom that I had, to go on and diagnose. So it absolutely can be in your tank(s) and the cause of the problems happening, even without being seen / noticed!
thank you for the video... very informative. I have 13 tanks and I noticed what looks like the symptoms at various stages in a few of my tanks. Not sure How it got into any of the tanks, but I believe its spreading because I've re-planted live plants from one tank to another. I've tried many of the other suggested treatments: ie furan-2 and kanaplex which seems to work for a while, but its seems to come back after a few months. I'll try your method on my 50 gallon tank that has my colony of gold sailfin mollies.... Keep my fingers crossed.
Thank you so much for the information. I was confused looking around online and couldn’t find an exact match, but after watching this it’s pretty clear that columnaris has been wiping out my guppies. I just bought a hospital tank and am going to follow your suggestions for treatment.
Very straightforward explanation ❤ could you make a video too about fish tb? I've did some research and i figured that there's a lot different opinion regarding it.
Thank you for the informative video.I have had a fish started flashing (she was pregnant back then) and one day,I noticed white single dot on her tail and she was not acting normal and I tried EM powder which made her develop red patch, tried ich med , I tried paraguard... I tried general cure... it did not help and passed. In the video, you said you notice white patch but if it were single dot that would not multiply dot over days but fish acting strange;not engaging with other fish or spend time near the top (not gasping air) and no appetite..,what would that be?I do not think she had swollen gill either. I have not figured out what it was .If it were ich,it would be more than 1 dot and should see more white dot on the fish but it was not like that so,it still is mystery to me.
Good advice, Norman. What concentration of aquarium salt would you recommend? When using amoxycillin, how much to use per litre? You say 500mg per day but we all have different sized tanks. Thanks.
@@majorbruster5916 aquarium salt has to be what is advised on the packaging - not a grain more. The 500mg has to be given per day c regardless of tank size. It’s the amount required to kill off the bacteria.

Fish are pets, with all the proper care I surely do hope we can eventually bring back the strong stress free guppies not prone to columnaris to our aquariums :)
Just lost about 250 fish in 17 tanks in 3 days time. Did the meds and salt, added air stones but couldn't get the antibiotics in time. Did this to all 20 and at least saved 3 tanks so far... that could change. I think I cross contaminated them by using the Python hose and jay hook and it moved extremely fast. Sad. My questions are and I'm not being facetious... !. How do you nuke and scrub your plants? I don't understand how you can do it? and 2. Should I dip my Python jay hook and hose in bleach or vinegar and then clean it off with clean water before putting it into the next tank to be siphoned? Thanks for your help because its been a hard 3 days.
Smaller plants are hard to do every leaf, you can take the time and rub each one between your fingers with warm water and vinegar or use the plant decontamination method in the video we have for it. The idea to dip your Python in vinegar is one I would do for. Sorry it’s been tough, it’s the worse disease I’ve ever had to deal with.
@@cookiesfishroom I watched the plant decontamination video and it is very helpful. I'll look more into the vinegar dip for the Python. Sad I've lost so many nice fish that I've worked on for a long time. Thanks for your help.
