    I like downwind sailn- it’s very peaceful as the hulls slice through the water!! You’re on land Demonstration is fun to watch!! Thx mate Allan-USA

    Still the best of the best ! How precious are such complete and clear explanations. Seing your videos, we spared so much time since they started, and we avoided so much problems, improving our sailing technique.
    And I'm 60, I started to sail with my own boat at 7, I could believe I knew everythin.
    Thanks to you I don't feel as a 60 experienced sailor, I fell much younger, because I'm still learning, and that's gold !!!

    I know this is basic information for most of your viewers Joe, but these things are solid gold for those of us new to the sport. The VHS tape tell idea is awesome.
    Thank you.

    Super useful advice for the sometimes quite terrifying and often not well understood H16 downwind leg, especially the comments on sail positioning and, when necessary, how to slow that baby down. Grt job as always Joe!

    I am moving from a CL 16 to a Hobie Wave and it’s been a smooth transition so far. I’m extremely grateful to have found this most excellent channel. Keep up the good work!

    Joe, Great tutorial videos!.. I just bought a 1982 Hobie 16 (Hobie Alter Signature Model) that I'm restoring but it's already in excellent condition. I've never sailed and have been looking at all your videos which have been extremely helpful.. Thanks a lot!

    love your videos Joe! you did not mention dead donwind/wing to wing whch can be very fast on the 16 in lightwind conditiions (not fast like in good wind but fast compared to boats doing the standard downwind sailing. in light wind conditions, you can point the 16 straight downwind. fully travel out and sheet out both sails, skipper goes forward on the side with the main sail and steadies it with his hand on the boom, crew goes forward on the opposite side and pulls the jib across. in race if done in the right conditions in mean a huge difference because you head straight for the downwind mark after rounding "A" , far less distance. you may have covered it in another video. this technique is very effective in club races against 18's and tigers as cannot do this as effectively. hope to visit one day will not likely be able.

      Hi Ken, thanks for that, good shout, i'm not racing so much so it's not something that comes up very often - i'll make a video just looking at that technique.

    Which technique would you recommend if one wants to fly the hull downwinds?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      to fly the hull, as the helm, move more into the middle of the boat (away from the windward side) if the wind is lighter. HeAD up towards the beam reach to get the hull out, once it's out gently bear down keeping the hull out - if it comes down head back up a little - the same steering technique as using the spinnaker. It is tricky, if the wind is too light it won't come out. If it's strong you don't need to move to the middle.

      Thank you!! Sail settings are the same as in the standard downwind?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, although as you bring the boat towards the wind to get the hull up you'll need to sheet in more.

      this is known as "the wind thing". adding to what Joe says you will usually have head up slightly and have your crew move toward the wrong side of the boat (leeward side) even as far as being on the leeward hull but ready to move quickly to windward side in a gust. as you excellerate you may nned to sheet in a bit as your apparent wind will increase. then you may be able to head downwind abit. in a gust head down or sheet out or both. downwind sheeting out the jib is more important than the main to avoid capsize in a gust. if you are a lake sailor and sailing in waves you will need to utilize surfing as well for best speed.
