I am so happy you are starting to look at The Old Republic Cinematics. In my opinion, as a Star Wars fan of 39 years, the Old Republic Cineamatics, is as close as prequels and even original Star Wars that we can get to. They are all short movies. The game itself has the best story, a game can have (Mass Effect serise is close...)... And at the end of it all, the game is just great. I was one of it's first player, when it was in beta stage, and that gave me the title, in game, as a "Founder"... :) Now I am 50 years, and still loving it, and playing it. And of course still loving the Original movies (the best), and then the prequels (on a second place)... You made an old "Star Wars" heart happy, when you started to review "STAR WARS: The Old Republic", cinematics... (By the way, I am a very old World Of Warcraft Player also, so I love your comments on the cinematics and ingame movies of that game. That is my second game, I play all the the time. I've been playing World of Warcraft since 2004!) .... Love you, and your comments and reviews. You are the best "Filmmaker" to this date, to give an honest and true opinion of these "Movies", I have watched others, but none can compare with your insight... Keep it up... :)

    • @PetraDarklander

You do remember that they gave the title 'Founder' to anyone that played it the first year it was out. I was disappointed with that because like you, I was in the Beta. Had 3 or 4 wipes before the game came out. I knew Ord Mantel very well by that point lol.

There was a scene where they invaded the Jedi temple, that could have been a great inspiration to do something similar in the sequel trilogies. Too bad Lucas' Star Wars never got a sequel trilogy.

The Old Republic begins in 3681 BBY, or three thousand, six hundred and eighty-one years before Episode IV, and the Sith Empire here is an offshoot from the defeated remnants of Naga Sadow's forces. Like a lot of older lore, The Old Republic's canonicity is questionable, though there have been some references to it in the Disney canon, albeit in the form of supplemental materials.
The soldiers in white are indeed Republic Troopers. We see the characters who are archetypes for the four core classes for the Republic here - the Smuggler, the Trooper, the Jedi Knight and the Jedi Consular, as well as the Sith Juggernaut and Sith Sorcerer. I'm glad you caught the fighting styles - Malgus, the Sith Apprentice is a "Juggernaut" who specialise in brute power and overwhelming force which is how he overpowers the Jedi Master so I'm glad that came across in the video.
Satele Shan, the Jedi padawan is the descendant of Bastila Shan and Darth Revan from Knights of the Old Republic.
The first three cinematics feature the same characters at three different phases of the war. The game proper begins shortly after the third one, during a brief ceasefire as both sides try to recover and consolidate.

One thing I noticed (after so many views) is the difference in the "passing a lightsaber to your partner" between the Jedi and Sith:
Sateel throws/sacrifices her saber to help her Master.
Malgus has to steal the saber from Vindican who tries to hold on.
A contrast of "generosity" vs "selfishness".

@@michaelriddick7116 amazing ! The Agent story and its multiple possible endings is considered by many to be the best class story.
And since last year - or was it 2 years ago? - you can finally play an "agent" with a blaster, with the new rules.
Personally, I've created three "Mandos" (Din Djarin) just before that rule change, both wearing the exact same cosmetic armor, and one of them was an Operative.
Batman the foes and then shiv shiv shiv ^^. The other a Powertech and a Vanguard.
I haven't played in over a year but I might come back to it sometime!
I dare say I have created some of the very best strongholds in the game, and I should go back to record them one day. Took me years upon years to build...
They have dumbed down the rules a bit over the years, not sure how it is now, but the complexity of the skill trees was amazing in the beginning (I remember when you had to reload flechette round as a Scoundrel!)
As players we often felt over the years that Bioware was running the game with a skeleton crew, but I've often felt the level of care & detail that went into the inception of this masterpiece was really something, so I'm actually honored to get to tell one of the OG developers!
"OH SO YOU'RE A SPY TOO?!" *points finger*
One of my favorite lines in the whole game (when you first get into the Hutt's palace on Hutta and meet a fellow operative ^^')
Cheers from France ! I originally played on Mantle of the Forcen then had chars on all 17 servers (at the time, in 2012. I know there were a lot more at launch!)

9:08 talking on “it’s something they know will happen” you are extremely correct as it’s fully part of the Sith tradition and code.
As a Sith Master your duty is to take on a Sith apprentice and train/raise them to be stronger than you, so that when they finally challenge you for your position, their heightened strength, power and skill will overwhelm your own, defeating you.
Yes, you are to literally raise your own assassin, but in doing so, as he takes your place, so does the strength and power of the Sith Empire rise alongside it, as you know through your death, that you have completely your duty in raising someone stronger to take your place, knowing that they too shall also one day follow in your footsteps in brining the Sith to greater heights of glory - it’s also why so many great Sith warriors and masters are honoured and remembered after their deaths, as they are honoured for doing their duty and carrying on the Sith legacy.

1000 years of Tenebrae Viciate's rule as emperor realy fostered that sentiment. In Naga Shadows Era, and before in the pre war era all the way to the dark jedi joining the sithari. Making your own "assassin" was not realy how it vent, it was more of a traditional making yourself strong wich then led to the empires prosperity thro your leadership and strength.
The kill your mentor, is viciate and after, due to viciate being the indesputable ruler for 100 years, and making the dark concil his administrators defacto (when he dident directly pippet them.
Wich later goes to revan and malak, wich then later gets picked up by bane's rule of 2, due to the sith being incapable of making an empire like of old, due to no one, being able to be it's undesputed ruler for long enogh, and being powerfull enogh in the force to truly rule a population of political sith elite

  • @TheLuconic
    @TheLuconic 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Where to start.... This man is my new favorite. He speaks the truth when it comes to the sword comparison as well as the rest of the choreography. I seen many youtubers who are HEMA practitioners and just about all of them view starwars in a hyper realistic view, which is not always bad, its good to learn how its actually done in real life... but thats where it fails too. They are hyper focus on realism and not in the fantasy setting. This man, Philip, just stated facts that just about all hema youtubers dismissed, yet they acknowledge that there maybe some force influence, (even though it has to do with everything with the force) yet still dismiss it as unrealistic and impractical. And again, I respect them for their opinions and expert analysis. But this is star wars and you can obviously tell they are not super fans. I mean they are fans enough to know what star wars is and even quote some names, but thats about it. Also, they constently gloss over key details about how a jedi or even sith us the force and how it influences their everyday life. Literally in the star wars film, a new hope (or to us OG, Star Wars) Obi wan, sex appeal, Kenobi said to Luke to let go of his control, (not in those exact words) and to embrace his feelings. He even blind fold the kid with a blast shield helmet that blocks his view so that he can focus on the force itself. and then we literally see Luke deflecting stun bolts and there. Right there. No Hema guy is able to do that immedietly. Maybe by accident or by chance, but not on purpose.
Im sorry for the rant, its just, it gets tiring to hear the same, oh it wont work, or, thats not real enough. Again, and hopfully I get my point across, I respect them for that. I understand them, but they dont bother to understand Star Wars, but Philips, this guy whom I found cuz this year I decided to dedicate time to learn and improve my film making skills, exposed himself to be an understanding guy. He knows why the jedi are super human and how every move makes sense, cuz they aint us. They are literal super human who can hold planets together from it blowing up. I heard that feat from another star wars channel.
Oh, im subbing this channel hard and I cant wait to see more of Philips videos and learn more about filmmaking from him. Just by listening to his thoughts, tips and advice will be a huge help to me.

  • @MolnarG007
    @MolnarG007 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Fun fact: Darth Malgus' class is different than his Sith master, his class gains power, more force as the combat is ongoing, game mechanic is you literally use combat skills to charge your force meter, than you can use it to unleash various devastating attacks. So it makes sense first the Jedi could hold both of them off, like deflecting the lighting to Malgus, etc, but by the end he was too powerful to defeat.
The little things can only be seen if checked frame by frame, like the Sith Master's force shield flashing, visible for a tiny time when the trooper shot a grenade/missile at him and it exploded (so that's why he wasn't affected), etc. etc.
By the way the Old Republic is several thousands of years before the movies, giving freedom for the developers to tell their story, which is absolutely amazing for both Republic and Imperial side, for each class (the game Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) takes place around 3640 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin), which is about 3650 years before the events of the original Star Wars movie (A New Hope)

First time seeing your channel. Genuinely curious both: Where do you think the sabre duel in it's entirety with Kao Cen Darach, Satlile Shan, Darth Vindican, and Malgus, where in a list would you rank it compared to all other Star Wars duels? For me, this one is probalby my second favourite in all Star Wars.
I'd also be curious to know what you think of the duel between Obi Wan Kenobi and Maul on Tattoine from Star Wars Rebels? That one is my favourite of all Star Wars.
For this fight, I love that they show the Jedi actually winning a fight (and not because they're main legacy characters who need to survive and are the strongest always). I wish Kao Cen Darach had done a little better than Malgus. But at least we got to see a Jedi win a fight, and with aggressive well executed form. Jedi that aren't main characters are often used just to look cool before dying. But Kao Cen Darach was the Jedi Battlemaster at the time of the cinematic.

This is the Old Republic era, in other words, 4700 years BBY(before the battle of Yavin 4 in "A New Hope"). During this time period, there is no Sith Rule of 2... meaning there were as many Sith as there were Jedi. One thing that hasn't change in almost 5000 years is the Mandalorians and the Hutts, they play a huge roll in this time period as well.

One complaint I have is that animators always have them holding the lightsabers wrong. For example, at 16:00 you can see he’s holding his green saber near the bottom. His hand should be higher, specifically right beneath the blade. That’s where you would hold a sword in order to have the most control and leverage possible.

I remember a certain novel explaining there are different grips for different types of power/agility ratio. Lower grips would be for more power and higher would be for more maneuverability and agile strikes. This is apparent when you see Anakin fight (he holds his saber near the bottom.)

based on the lore as far as i know the problem with thrusts is that the weight distribution of the blade changes because it isnt solid, the reason force users can use these weapons that well is that they can forsee the changes but like that a thrust would be a problem if the wieght suddenly pulls strongly to a point at the peak of the weapon

I did play The Old Republic for over a year and half from spring 2021 to autumn 2022, but it was so such as big story, and I wanted to play other games, so I quit playing. But the cinematics still hold up as the modeling and animation is amazing for 2010! I don't know how Bioware made such good cinematic trailers, but these should be expanded from the game and made into movies! Not many fans know this, but the era of 3,600 Before The Battle Of Yavin(as it used to date events that happened before it, and after it still hold true) I also did martial arts, and had katana training as my intention was to do katana kata competitions at tournaments. It was so fun learning those moves! I can appreciate your analysis of the lightsaber dueling between Darth Maglus and Satele's Master, and between the Sith Master and Satele! I think was well done too. Very cool video!

This is thousands of years BBY, before the Rule of Two, so the Sith wars more numerous in this era.
One of the main recurring stories in this MMO is that every time the Sith get the upper hand their own infighting does them in. It's basically a long explanation of why the Rule of Two was needed.

That's Darth Malgus (not to be confused with Malak) and Satele is Revan/Bastila's great-granddaughter. The guys who look like clones armor wise are Republic Troopers.
Also I have fencing experience as well, and honestly, when I watch SW for entertainment, I just go "anything inaccurate/showboat-y is gonna be because they have the force (aka. superpowers)." Another thing that I feel should be used more in SW is the fact that they can retract and re-deploy the blades almost instantaneously. They do it for a moment here, but I think this is the only video where it's utilized in combat.

I don't know if I'm going to have time to make it through this whole video or not to tell whether or not you noticed but, did you notice when the Sith ship landed in the hangar Bay it landed catty-cornered so that way the Jedi did not have a straight inline shot into the Docking Bay of the Sith ship? I thought that was a pretty cool touch

This cinematic is better than anything Disney's put out the past 10 years. This actually feels like Star Wars this actually looks and sounds like Star Wars everything about this is what Star Wars is supposed to be if someone were to take this and turn it into an open world/galaxy Star Wars game it could be probably the greatest game ever

  • @RedwoodTheElf

keep in mind that these events take place 1000 years before the prequels. So no Clone Troopers, no Droidekas, and there are a LOT more than 2 Sith.
If you haven't done so yet, I recommend reacting to the cinematics from the Starcraft series of games. Some serious lore and cinematography there.

You hit it on the head that this game was made from a place of love for Star Wars, its origins, its lore, and its fan base. The game was a major let down, BUT, the storyline’s and the work the team has done in the decade since its release still reflect that sentiment. I would have paid this team to write the sequel trilogy than the trash we got.

The EU lore behind it, is that clone trooper armor is based off of Mandalorian armor and the armor of the troopers of the old republic. Men and Women who while not force sensitive could go toe to toe with the average sith in hand to hand and close combat.

I saw a great theory where the old republic and prequil movie lightsaber fights are way action-packed than the OG and Disney is that the jedi and sith were at their peak of skill and force sensitivity. When bane created the rule of two, it off set the Force, not allowing the jedi, who kept expanding, to use the full sense of the Force. When Order 66 came around and the Empire, the Empire erradicated all signs, hints, history, and symbols of the Old Republic. That is why in the OG trilogy, Luke had to create his own form based off of Ben's teachings. Then, intoduce Disney. The lightsabers are now choppy, you don't know if the lightsaber is a pointy stick or a slice-em-in-half weapon. The coreography is alright but it doesn't follow any set or pattern. That is because the force sensitives are heraring legends of this once great republic( plus the help of Luke's teachings) that is basicly, redefining the jedi ways. They are starting from scratch.
I feel like it is more of a justification for the Sequels being good, but Disney just needs to stop caring as much as they are, have fun wit the lore, stop complicting the scripts to fit in with modern day politics and beliefs, and for god's sake, read the damn lore and use star wars weapons as they are described. Lightsabers burn at over 1000 degrees. If you are stabbed, you are dead, not only from the stab wound but also your internal organs buring to a crisp.
Pardon the rant. Have a wonderful day, and leave a like of we need an old republic trilogy from either the Bane, Malgus, or Revan time.

Please make sure you use the official videos. There are some videos like the so called SWTOR movie that use unofficial dialogue and sound, and in those circumstances frankly it sounds awful and the dialogue doesn't fit. It doesn't happen frequently but when it does it really is subpar to the official SWTOR cinematic videos. The Sith was Darth Malgus and this is set about 3000 years before the movies.
