My favorite part of this cinematic is how nonchalantly Reinhardt says their salute the first time "Live with honor, die with glory". But they repeat it again later when they say goodbye and you can see by the look in his eyes that this is the first time he actually understands what that means.

  • @Tommy57G

The reiteration of Baldric's "I have been called. I must answer." from the beginning to old Reinhardt's "I have been called. I must answer....always." ALWAYS hits me in the feels. You feel the weight he has carried since that day in the last "always". Darin is so great aa boisterous Reinhardt, but the gravitas of that last line is so solemn and meaningful.

@@reichtanglevictor1694 depends on your perspective. Some may think it's more 'respectful' to dispose of the body in a more 'traditional' way and have a funeral, but I think it's an interesting cultural idea to always leave the armor alone. Due to the nature of the position, I would guess most crusaders die in the line of duty. Therefore, their bodies, clad in their armor, instantly becomes a memorial, a tribute, a permanent reminder, of their final moments, their final stand. To honor their sacrifice.

What i like most about this cinematic is that it shows exactly how it feels to play Reinhardt in the game: its so easy to sprint forward and kill half of the other team, but, while you do your entire team is strugling if not dead.
At the same time sitting in front, shielding people while you know you can kill that guy shooting at you requires alot of discipline because its 10x more boring.
So yea you can have more fun by making your teams life miserable, or you can be the good guy and do your job protecting them.

    • @lordmortarius538
      @lordmortarius538 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's more nuanced than that, you have to have map awareness and know where the enemy is, where your team is, and be able to recognize those openings where you CAN charge in and get a pick, or accurately judging when to drop shield and fire strike an enemy behind cover just as they come out (I've done that more than once, so satisfying lol). If their main support is out of position and you can charge them into a wall and finish off with a fire strike/hammer hit, that's when you start calling for an all-in. I've done that more than once too lol

Reinhardt players have long been known to jump off on their own and try to solo the other team. It's a meme by now. But for a few days after this cinematic came out, most games I got into that had a Reinhardt, he stuck with the team and used his shield more. The meme eventually came back but it was a little tamer.

Very intersting! I love too see filmmakers react to game cinematics, especially overwatch! The backstorys the emotional caracthers have makes for all the more fun to piece their past as group, and the more recent ones lead us to the future of it. Thankfull for guys like you and Kai Zammit, you really made my day!

One thing that's always stood out to me as a great way of sending home the character shift:
    - Bauldric is seen almost exclusively using his shield until it is destroyed against the Omnic that stabs him.
    - Rein doesn't use his shield at all until the climax, after he literally gives up his weapon and goes all in on being the teams shield.

That Castle belongs to Balderich (the man who dies) and he dies protecting his HOME. When a Crusader dies in their armor, they stay in that armor as their tomb.
The girl's name is Brigitte Lindholm, daughter of Rein's best friend Torbjörn Lindholm (swedish engineer) and she's Rein's squire, although she's a healer because she needs to keep our beloved idiot Rein alive despite his shenanigans. Torbjörn and Rein were in Overwatch together.

One of my favorite examples of that crowning glory battle is from the book Alan Quatermain, by H. Rider Haggard. An old warrior defending the palace gate while the main battle rages elsewhere. I even incorporated that into the epilogue for one of my D&D characters, years after the grand quest that he was part of. That whole sense of "I may be old and nowhere near my prime, but I will still fight to my last breath to protect what matters." With my character, he even buried his sword in the stone of the stairs he was defending, and that then became a monument of its own.
Also, interestingly, some of the Omnics that they are fighting are Bastion model Omnics - the same kind that we see in The Last Bastion cinematic.
In any event, you've got to watch the Overwatch 2 animated short Kiriko. My favorite Overwatch video hands down!

So in Overwatch lore (which I recommend you watch these in order so that it makes more sense), 28 years prior to these events the Omnic Crisis occurred, a world war where the omnics (sentient AI robots) rebelled against their human creators and began a wholesale slaughter from omniums (factories that make omnics) around the world. National forces like enhanced soldiers from the US and the Crusaders of Germany in this vid were being overrun, when the UN decided to form an elite strikeforce called Overwatch to wage asymmetrical warfare against the omnics, rather than fighting them on their terms. That is the emblem Balderich von Adler is holding, as he was called to serve, and then passed his obligation on to Reinhardt Wilhelm as he died.
After the omnics were defeated, Overwatch was utilized to maintain world peace by taking out dangerous factions and leaders before they could become a threat, and another team, a covert ops branch called Blackwatch was created to perform more.... nefarious duties. Blackwatch fucked up a mission and it came to the public's attention, creating distrust and calls for regulation, forcing the UN to begin investigating their activities. The leaders of Overwatch and Blackwatch, former comrades, later got into a very heated argument at headquarters, ending in an explosion that presumably left both of them dead. Not long after, the UN signed the Petras Act, which banned all future Overwatch activity, forcing the organization to disband, and it's former members to work as mercenaries or other occupations.
The short "Recall" is a great place to start, as it ties into the reasons for the others to appear in their own short vids.

The girl is not his daughter. He is however her Godfather.
    Backstory:
After the battle (from the flashback), Reinhart joined Overwatch instead of his mentor, but learned teamwork and selflessness.
One day, he saved the life of one of his team mates (Tobjorn). As a thank you, he honored Reinhart as the Godfather of his future daughter (Brigitte from the cinematic).

I noticed something interesting on this watch. Live with honor, but DIE with glory. In the bar scene at the beginning, Rein says "You'd give up the GLORY of being a crusader?" But glory comes in death. Then when they arrive in the castle and his commander tells him to fall back, Rein says "And let you have all the GLORY? We will fight them off together!" But once again glory comes in death, and his commander wants him to keep on living. After these events, Rein understands first-hand that he must live with honor rather than glory.

As a player, before this cinematic came out, you just know he constantly says "i am your shield" when you play as him. As young reinhardt in this clip, he doesn't even use his shield until after his friend died. Ugh, so sad. So, the young woman by Reinhardt at the beginning and the end is not Reinhardt's daughter but both his sort of apprentice/learner/mentee, his personal engineer (for his crusader suit of armor) and the daughter of his best friend for life Torbjörn. They're not really blood related but calling her his niece would not be inaccurate. She's found family rather than blood family.

This is another gem from the Blizzard cinematic team. I can relate as a Soldier that we all have that moment when the important meaning behind what we do as protectors comes into focus.
You can see that difference when Reinhardt recites the motto in the beginning versus the end. The cost of glory and valor always weigh heavy on us and it’s something we carry forward.
Live with Honor, Die with Glory!
