The Roman Empire was not brought down by barbarians, it was a combination of internal conflict(civil wars) and constant harassment by the goths, huns, franks, Saxons etc. these peoples were not at all barbarians in loincloth, and we're in fact very wealthy groups of people that the Romans called "barbarians" simply because they were not citizens of the empire. One of the reasons they were able to bring down the western Roman Empire was because they were a lot better funded, less corrupt, and had a military force similarly equipped as the Romans
+Seth Delmar Lets not be too hasty. The Romans were conquered by tribes of people that didn't bathe, didn't have indoor plumbing, didn't do brain surgery, didn't build monuments that have stood for two thousand years, didn't have a code of laws, didn't have a contract system, and that didn't found a republic. Consider adding this to your list of what led to the fall of Rome. Rome could not withstand the division of the empire as the east empire contained all the wealth, which continued to stand for another fifteen hundred years.
358Disaster arnt we talking about the western empire here? i never mentioned the Byzantines. Sure the Germanic tribes weren't as advanced as the Romans, but i wouldn't say they were barbaric that's like someone living in a very well off country, let's say Sweden, calling someone who lives in a third world country a barbarian. what i was arguing is that the Germanic tribes were not maniacs running around in loincloth, not that they were better than the Romans(in some ways they were other wise the Western empire would have stood longer or maybe even still standing today)
Seth Delmar I think if we met the Romans today, we would call them barbarians. The Romans also had a lot of other things to worry about other than hurting people's feelings. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot respect for the goths, huns, ect. I thought what you said was great, and excellent reasons for the fall of Rome. As far as the east/west thing goes, its just a factor that played into the fall of Rome just like the others reasons that you mentioned.
+MCTarnkappe Hindsight: RückBLICK (hinterher wissen, was man hätte tun sollen). 20-fucking-20: Optikerausdruck für optimales [fucking] SEHvermögen. Echt drollig, ne?
The part that resonates with me most is when he cuts the other guy off about the combat system being based on percentages. Fuck that system, thank god for Civ V.
It's all fun and games until your 20 helicopter group assaults their last remaining city and they all die to the one leftover archer from the early game.
"Listening to [Stalin] brag about being in Beyond the Sword is bad enough." I laughed hard at that. It was the first thing I noticed when I installed the game!
At least good to know, that I am not the only one who is universally hated by the combat odds. This video is just calm and peaceful... compared to what I usually do in the same situation! :)
@Kimbert91 Countless times I have been building a world wonder(I started late so I guess I kind of had it coming) and I try to get it down as quickly as possible(cutting down trees, etc.). Then I am 1 or 2 turns away from finishing, only to find it has been built in a far away land. Sometimes I even reload the game to find a way while shouting "BULLSHIT!"
@UnchainTheWolv3s actually, i have to agree with you there, in particular how he decided to make the Me 262 a fighter bomber, effectively nullifying any advantage they had.
they will on the high difficulty when given enough land and time to to develop. someone posted a "barbarian challenge" save a while ago on civ fanatics. It was on deity difficulty and had all the Ai separated from the player by mountains, and gave the barbs quite a lot of room to spawn. They would come at you with rifles at 1000ad.
@danusmc78 Their an option in civ that remember the random seed. That means the same combat will always have the same result. You could reload that save game 1 000 000 times and you would still lose with that option. It's the way random number generator works on computer. If you start a games in advanced mode, you could remove that options and have a different outcome each time you load a save.
Leaving only one unit to defend a city, I always do that too. That is until I learned how far transports can move and that its almost impossible to detect them until they've already attacked your city.
@rhinnawi95 Found it, the mod is "Rise of Mankind - A new dawn" and it's on the civfanatics site (has its own subforum). Hitler and a bunch of other leaders come in a "mega civ pack - lite version". Also on civfanatics, on the main mod's own forum. Look up the thread. Beware, lots of things might be different with that mod. :P
Civ5 thankfully fixes the issue of ancient units occasionally being able to overpower modern ones. At the same time, it lets Barbs have fucking modern tech, too, so you often see fucking Barb Gatling guns prattling about.
@BlackPanteraSociety Of course YESSSSSSSSSSSS. Ever heard of one hundred Britishes defending themselves against 4000 Zulus only with bolt action rifles and no canon? 250 SAS with enough ammo is way more than enough for 10000 axe swingers. 250 must be three companies with few machine guns, mortars, grenade launchers, sniper rifles and AT weapons. Enough to break down the will of the most discipline army from medieval time.
@SUPERBAD119 Not exactly. Civ IV's combat is based on odds and percentages, so the stronger unit will usually win. Except that there's a very, very, very small chance that the weaker unit will come out on top. In this particular case, we're talking lottery odds. Except instead of getting rich, all you get is pissed off. :) But Firaxis said one of the major fixes in Civ V will be improved combat.
i seen this vid edited about 100 times based on different themes. but it works everytime and you never get bored lol. nothing better that seeing hitler going off his rocker.
@SilentHunter7 Not to mention that if you have "infantry platoons"... the barbarians wouldn't be using warriors.. they'd be using something fairly equitable.
@Badhabitsjay Yeah, I haven't finished all the SpecOps missions yet but getting kinda tired of it. I need a game with PURPOSE. RPG's seem to be the way to go.
Still the best civ game ever, for strategist that is. Five is pretty, doesn't take much intelligence to learn, and is quite fun; I do play it and like it, but four is still the pinnacle of the series.
"awwww ahahaaaww daaamn. That's gotta hurt." my reaction to "leipzig was sacked by barbarians. The city has been destroyed". I've heard of losing the space race by 1 turn but shit. And to a warrior :D
@kartoffelsaek As for his overall effect, yes China improved before Deng's reforms, but it would have done a lot better if the KMT had won. Think Deng's reforms three decades early. And no Cultural Revolution, no Great Leap Forward, no inquisitions to torture millions for the crime of being intellectuals, no famines to kill tens of millions more for the crime of being on the wrong side of collectivization. I might be a bit biased, since my grandparents had to suffer through it, but seriously!
I've had a case where a longbowman killed a tank. Then again, to be fair, the Tank was really weakened, but in that battle it would probably have been movie style shit.
@Panthiest Yep, I've had that happen, too, except I lost one to a caravel! The AI and combat systems in Civ 4 cheat like hell--one time I was technologically way ahead of everyone else and devoted all my cities to producing military units. I looked at one of my lower-scored rivals and he had a whopping 35-40 riflemen and SAM units in one city--in a small civ with no railroads and few resources!
and that has also happened to me before, but with AI's, not barbs razing my capital city. so now when playing civ4bts i always say to myself: build military units first; everything else is just a means to be able to train more, faster. and i rarely build wonders; i let my rivals build them for me to take later :D
Well i know i've had my fair share of WTF moment's playing civ 4, "magical" enemy units that can cross rivers attacking me on a jungled mountain and kick my ass
yes, it is downfall. and yes i am correct because I have the movie Downfall, and this same exact scene is in the movie. I'm well aware there are other names for it aswell.
Barbs can attack cities in Civ V but cities can innately attack anything and have to be whittled down to capture them unlike in Civ IV where barbs or anyone can waltz into an ungarrisoned city and claim it.
@Nggakjelas92 Had that happen, too--that's why I like to bomb and shell the hell out of them before I commit my attack force to the battle--to reduce their strength and defense. Even then, my tanks and mech inf units still get damaged in the assault!
Atleast his helicopter didn't get killed by a swordman...
once a warrior took out my panzer and razed my capital
Are you assuming gender?! :P
" An empire, brought down by a bunch of assholes in lioncloths". LOL That's the Roman Empire in a nutshell.
The Roman Empire was not brought down by barbarians, it was a combination of internal conflict(civil wars) and constant harassment by the goths, huns, franks, Saxons etc. these peoples were not at all barbarians in loincloth, and we're in fact very wealthy groups of people that the Romans called "barbarians" simply because they were not citizens of the empire. should have gone for the great wall before anything else...
"Well isn't YOUR hindsight 20-fucking-20!" Brilliant!
+prelynmax didnt understand that though, what does that mean?
+MCTarnkappe Hindsight: RückBLICK (hinterher wissen, was man hätte tun sollen). 20-fucking-20: Optikerausdruck für optimales [fucking] SEHvermögen. Echt drollig, ne?
3 days spent on civ4 ain't wasted time. One of the best games ever. Spent hundreds of hours with my friends to this one.
Steam tells me I have 700 hours logged on Civilization 5. Got it for Christmas 2010.
William Stockhecker Got civ 5 in 2013 an I have 1.5k +
Appleorgasm :0
Appleorgasm so what? one game :P
spritley pine Almost every game I have on steam I put at least 400 hours into.
I hate it how in Civ3 I fought with a full health tank against a wounded warrior, and the tank lost.
Christian Wheeler well the warrior could easily dodge the shots from the tank or sneak attack and get inside... if it was real life ofcourse
Random Vids oh come on. a tank would fuck the whole bunch of warriors
Copernicus not against a ninja ;3
The warrior ambushed the tank, climbed in and killed the crew
Rambo
The part that resonates with me most is when he cuts the other guy off about the combat system being based on percentages. Fuck that system, thank god for Civ V.
Actually sort of happened to the real Roman Empire...
It's all fun and games until your 20 helicopter group assaults their last remaining city and they all die to the one leftover archer from the early game.
bloody barbarinas they are no joke at diety difficulty
"The warfare in this game is bullshit!" - Adolf Hitler, 1949
Me when a low health Machine Gun destroyed my Panzer
Machine guns cannot attack
No, I attacked with my Panzer, and this Machine Gun was on a farm :(
"Listening to [Stalin] brag about being in Beyond the Sword is bad enough." I laughed hard at that. It was the first thing I noticed when I installed the game!
Thank you so much to whoever made this. Genius
If that were the real case scenario I'd feel sorry for him too...
this video doesn´t have more likes and views because not everybody plays Civilization , but is one of the best .
carlos rebolledo there are a lot of people that plays civilization and with civ 6 released a year ago it atracted a lot of new players
I'm not a German speaker but even i find the acting phenomenal. How good it can be for native German speakers...
"Don't worry, the combat system isn't THAT bad" I AM IN TEARS
God I miss Barbarian Invasions in Civ 4
We need a mod!
Oh this is another genius take - I saw the Civ 5 version but I haven't sen this one - awesome!
This is why you rush Great Wall.
MSF soldier Alligator true
but civ iv has no great wall
Carstea Florentin still, you rush great wall
Yeah it does. It's unlocked at masonry.
civ iv only has normal walls, not a great wall
At least good to know, that I am not the only one who is universally hated by the combat odds.
This video is just calm and peaceful... compared to what I usually do in the same situation! :)
Too bad I understand the actual German so the fun is a little spoilt for me there :D
@Kimbert91 Countless times I have been building a world wonder(I started late so I guess I kind of had it coming) and I try to get it down as quickly as possible(cutting down trees, etc.). This is GOLD!!!
Leaving only one unit to defend a city, I always do that too. That is until I learned how far transports can move and that its almost impossible to detect them until they've already attacked your city.
Still remember when a chinese maceman destroyed my modern infantry... god this combat system is by far the worst i've ever seen...
@rhinnawi95 Found it, the mod is "Rise of Mankind - A new dawn" and it's on the civfanatics site (has its own subforum). Hitler and a bunch of other leaders come in a "mega civ pack - lite version". @xkitenz Don't forget the infamous "Spearman destroys Battleship" moment. :-DDD
@legoclonetrooper1234 it is possible because the combat system is based on percentages, not just which number is bigger than the other
i got civ 4 lol and the AI's are easy to beat now but i cant get the online working really annoyin. Funny vid man (Y)
Civ5 thankfully fixes the issue of ancient units occasionally being able to overpower modern ones.
At the same time, it lets Barbs have fucking modern tech, too, so you often see fucking Barb Gatling guns prattling about.
Does this scene ever wear out its usefulness?! lol
And this version was great...very creative.
@BlackPanteraSociety Of course YESSSSSSSSSSSS. i seen this vid edited about 100 times based on different themes. but it works everytime and you never get bored lol.
nothing better that seeing hitler going off his rocker.
freaking hysterical...i've had the same grievance at one time or another...bravo!
@SilentHunter7
Not to mention that if you have "infantry platoons"... the barbarians wouldn't be using warriors.. they'd be using something fairly equitable.
man I love these videos.
this is why elvis been always my cultural adviser
@Eamesam 'WTF?!' is the newest KMFDM record.
What is he talking about? 3 strength warriors? 10 strength infantry? This is not Civ 4!
"We'll just say Comcast dropped the connection"
I lol'd so hard at that, being a Comcast user.
...so true.
"an empire... as been torn down by assholes in loincloths"
I hate that too, longbows beat panzers or modern armor is rediculous. But that is why you always need to stock up on soldiers.
@Badhabitsjay Yeah, I haven't finished all the SpecOps missions yet but getting kinda tired of it. I need a game with PURPOSE. RPG's seem to be the way to go.
That reminded me that i went going on space victory as India only to end up getting my last city on Legendary Culture(25000 since it was vannila)
Still the best civ game ever, for strategist that is. Five is pretty, doesn't take much intelligence to learn, and is quite fun; I do play it and like it, but four is still the pinnacle of the series.
Hahaha I love this. I too only garrison with one unit per city, but rarely do I have the patience for cultural victory...
"awwww ahahaaaww daaamn. That's gotta hurt."
my reaction to "leipzig was sacked by barbarians. The city has been destroyed".
I've heard of losing the space race by 1 turn but shit. And to a warrior :D
I like how it starts sounding like a legetimate war council
@cobian91
The movie is Downfall.
@eohjelle Because this is a clip from a movie, he just put captions on
@kartoffelsaek As for his overall effect, yes China improved before Deng's reforms, but it would have done a lot better if the KMT had won. Think Deng's reforms three decades early.

ernsthaft, dass ist einfach nur geschmacklos!
I rofled throughout. Good job.
Who is a hardcore civ series gamer must know that feeling.
"I have lost 3 fucking days of my life on this session!" bwaha XD
At least they become a lot less common in the later game and they can't sack cities. Another thing as territories get claimed they can spawn.
Except when my near-death Galley with 2 spearmen on it takes out a fully-healed Trireme...
Comparing risk to civilization is like comparing "guess who" to sleeping dogs
@LOIZOS944 The original is called "Der Untergang"
This meme never gets old
I've had a case where a longbowman killed a tank. Then again, to be fair, the Tank was really weakened, but in that battle it would probably have been movie style shit.
3 f*cking days…
It's from a movie called Downfall it's actually pretty good if you ask me!
At least they fixed "spearman defeats tank" from Civ 3. Though "pikeman damages gunship" isn't much better.
Imagine if he was playing civ 1. "Mine Fuhrer, the Bismark has been sunk by a guy with a spear"!
Frederick, as he has the "Creative" ability. Check more here:
civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Civilization_Games_Wiki
I think they were all monsters and trying to compare them and deciding which one was the most cruel is quite impossible :)
and that has also happened to me before, but with AI's, not barbs razing my capital city. so now when playing civ4bts i always say to myself: build military units first; everything else is just a means to be able to train more, faster. and i rarely build wonders; i let my rivals build them for me to take later :D
"We'll just blame it on Comcast" Lol, I know how you feel Hitler, I do.
Well in Beyond the Sword, there is Stalin so point deducted.
Hilarious!!!!
The best complications of Der Untergang I've ever seen!
Well i know i've had my fair share of WTF moment's playing civ 4, "magical" enemy units that can cross rivers attacking me on a jungled mountain and kick my ass
I know how he feels. I had a tank defeated by an Aztec longbowman.
liked it!!awesome!!!! especially when hitler says- 'isnt your hindsight 20-fucking-20?!!!!'
yea i always imagined that to be a bit awkward...
Ahhh......... the famous Comcast lag. Thanks to it I got new internet. :D
Well, an infantry platoon has a lot more than 10 strength, but I see your point :)
Fur pants? Wouldn't that be kinda heavy? Maybe during winter...
@SaviorOfLogic Dont see how rifles can penetrate thick city walls, and bowmen dont even have to show their faces since arrows arc
I know want to play Civ IV... But unfortunately, I don't have that, so I'll have to settle with Civ III.
@hobbitonman Ach, that must've sucked! I've had 1 unit of grenadiers take 2 of my attacking gunships before but never spearmen and riflemen
last part was so funny, ( turn off the modem, well blame it on comcast xD)
i get so fucking pissed when a long bowman kills one of my strong melee units
I laughed so fucking hard through the entire video, especially when they tell him the news. best "Hitler finds out..." video i've seen so far.
yes, it is downfall.
and yes i am correct because I have the movie Downfall, and this same exact scene is in the movie. I'm well aware there are other names for it aswell.
@metathus1488 Conan is a bad ass.
A conan could take an entire platoon.
Had a similar reaction to a barbarian bringing down my gunship. fuck.
"an empire brought down by a band of bastards in loinclothes"
i seriously laughed out loud at that one :D
Barbs can attack cities in Civ V but cities can innately attack anything and have to be whittled down to capture them unlike in Civ IV where barbs or anyone can waltz into an ungarrisoned city and claim it.
@Nggakjelas92 Had that happen, too--that's why I like to bomb and shell the hell out of them before I commit my attack force to the battle--to reduce their strength and defense. Even then, my tanks and mech inf units still get damaged in the assault!
@mew6112 4 infantry killed by a longbowman. Yes, defending a hill city, but guys with rifles to freaking longbows!
I feel your pain. Damn percentages!!!!
