- Wing foil gear is very susceptible to damage. If you are planning to travel with your wing foil gear you should always pack your board, foil, and wing properly to avoid arriving at your destination with damaged gear. Airlines are particularily bad when it comes to handling fragile equipment. In this video I breakdown how I packed my gear for a recent trip to Maui to make sure it all arrived in one piece.

I have done a number of meticulous wrap jobs only to open the bag on the other end and find all of the wrapping cut away and a nice TSA leaflet inside. You can’t win.

Hey! Thank you so much for sharing this all! Question for you. I have a Fone Rock 5.5 (165cm) and was wondering is the medium bag could fit or if I should go with the 6.1. Knowing i will add a foil, a wing, pump, wetsuit etc... Thank you
Hey Emile, I'd go with the medium bag. My board was 5ft and I got the bag that holds up to 5'1. It had enough space to fit board, foil, wing, impact vest, helmet, etc. and add additional padding to the nose and tail. You don't want to go too big because the package needs to be "full." Anything rattling around or loose can cause damage. Hope that helps!

Is there a maximum width posted somewhere? I guess if it didn’t fit they would have to open it for visual inspection?
I didn't see a maximium width but I wouldn't go more than 26". That's the width of the bag at the link in description. Packed full it was probably stretched a few inches extra.
What a great job you done there. My last two purchased boards have come with some time of diamond style card protector, which I think is better than bubble wrap. No idea where they get it from but it was awesome stuff like a sock it just slipped on. Now I am thinking why did I not keep it.
Thanks Dan! I think one of my foils came with the same stuff. It's definitely easier to deal with and probably cheaper but I'd still be a bit worried it wouldn't stay nice and even across the board. I'd be interested to see someone wrap their own board with that stuff. I think bubble wrap is the easy way but maybe that stuff is a good option too if you can find it.
Flexi Hex. Works well but only lasts for one trip.
I ended up getting the 6’1” bag just for my wing gear without the board, turns out its a bit to big for all my gear and too small for my current board (it will be perfect for when I progress to a smaller board) any advice on how keep my gear from rattling around in the empty space? I dont have the budget at the moment for another smaller bag so it will have to do. Without a board it ends up being rather floppy.
Can you tie the bag or fold the bag in half with straps? It needs to be full or tight to avoid rattling around.

Hi great videos lots of useful information I have been windsurfing for about 10 years. This year I want to give wing foil a go. I have bought some used equipment.
Foil low aspect:-
“Gong”
Mast length 80cm
Front wing XL Wingspan 90cm x 2100 cm²
Stab Wingspan: 45 cm X 400 cm²
Wing:-

I am a little bit undecided about which board to buy? (I am 73kg) I have narrowed it down to two boards.
The first is an Inflatable board which I like for traveling being so compact
Length: 5’11 = 180.3cm
Width: 30″ = 76.2cm
Thickness: 5″ = 12.7cm
Volume: 135 liters
The second is a Hard Board
Length: 5’7 = 170,2 cm
Width: 31″ = 78,7 cm
Thickness: 5″ = 12,7 cm
Volume: 120 liters
What I would like to know does it makes that much difference to the learning curve Inflatable vs Hard Board? From what I have learned from your channel the Big Foil and Wing should be ok??

Hi JW. I'd lean towards the hard board but I don't think you'll be disapointed with either option. Hard boards have a slight advantage for getting up on foil (depending on the board you buy). The main advantages come from less surface "stick" when getting up, better touch down performance, and more responsive (stiffness). You also save the hassel of having to pump up each time. It's definitely easier to travel with an inflatable but I'd still go for the hard tail. 135L is also on the big side for your weight. Again, I'm sure you'll be happy with both options but I'd personally lean towards the hard board. Hope that helps!

Hi, travelling to Australia and thinking I might just travel with wing and foil and rent a board when there. Have you come across a bag for just wing, foil and other essentials but no board?
Hmm that's interesting. Nothing really comes to mind. Maybe a day board bag or a larger wing bag that could fit a foil as well? I love the ocean rodeo wing bag... could you buy one that fits a 7 or 8m and check if the foil will fit as well?

I just brought 1. Think I could have fit a second and maybe removed some padding.
Toronto, YYZ, has the world's smallest scanner for oversized luggage. Expect to unpack and repack everything at the airport.

Did the weight come in under 50lbs? Costs for overweight bags are ridiculous on flights. Interesting that they charged you on the way back from Maui for oversized. I never get dinged for my kiting gear but that bag is probably quite a bit smaller. Cool to see the vids of you ripping it up in English Bay.
It was probably close to 50lbs. They didn't seem too worried about the weight though. It seems to be a loophole with oversized luggage.

Do you think the bubble wrap is going to save your board agains some sharp hard objects? Do not think so…….. but this is what damages the board.
Between the bubble wrap, cardboard and padded bag, yes it does...
Don’t spend too long on your last day’s session and neglect to leave time to replicate this pack job for the trip home. Hawaii TSA is sloooow plus agriculture inspection. Not their problem if they ate up 90 minutes before your flight….
