I once did a lecture workshop kind of thing on this very topic. The speaker was Robert Westenberg (yes from Into The Woods). He talked about how people are very complex and have so many levels that they feel the you never see on stage. The number one thing I remember was that he said NEVER PRACTICE IN A MIRROR! Acting is about feeling true emotions and if you are truly becoming the character and truly putting yourself out there, you’ll feel the movement and your body will naturally act how that character does. He said that’s how you make things feel truly real and authentic. ACTING IS NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE, BUT WHAT YOU FEEL! It was the best workshop I’ve ever had!
I remember one of my most favorite singing coaches I ever had told me that the moment you most feel like you want to close your eyes is the moment you should BE SURE they're open. Don't keep that feeling to yourself, share it with the audience; it's what makes the performance connective and memorable. :) I still struggle tho lmao
Those are really great advices. I would also like to add on other advices for acting while singing. - Read the lyrics as if saying a monologue - Paraphrase the songs in your own words. - when telling a story, show the song with space - Be more on what you create - physical tensión that creates a push or pull I’ve learned them when I was in a virtual vocal class during my summer break before starting my senior year of high school.
My friend did a workshop for acting a song (with none other than Mike Faist!) singing Watch What Happens from Newsies. While that song is a nightmare breath control wise, the theme of the song is fairly easy to understand so it's easy to act to it.
I’ve never really thought about a focus point but when I did a showcase for a theatre camp, I was pretty still and didn’t move as much 😭😂 This video really helps since I find it hard to move when I sing cuz I feel like whenever I move and there are people watching, I feel like my movements look awkward 😭 Thanks for this Kat! Also, I have never auditioned yet but I hope maybe this year or next year I’ll be able to! :)
I just bring all the emotion and energy to my face because as my director says “your eyes can’t lie” so you have to make sure that if it’s super emotional, voice and face is more important than movement. But movement that adds to your performance is really good( it’s usually spontaneous especially if you’re emoting through your face and voice)
I've never auditioned for anything, but some of my favorite songs to act out is Burn from Hamilton, Memory from Cats, Rum a Tum Tugger from Cats, I Will be There from Count of Monte Cristo, Meant to be Yours from Heathers, and My Shot from Hamilton
Hey Katherine! Loved this video! My acting teacher has always said to talk your song like it is a monologue. This helps you memorize the lyrics and makes the song more natural and realistic. When your speaking the lyrics like it's a monologue, certain gestures arise from within you unconsciously, these add more to your performance. You can also rehearse your focus points when doing this.

Hi kath!! I go to an acting school and how it works is you’ll get assigned a duet/trio song based on your voice range, what you want to work on and what your already good at. At the end of 6 weeks all of the duet/trios perform for family, friends, etc. I just wanted to say that your videos have helped me through this so much. Your advice has helped me improve my acting style and your singing while acting advice is just phenomenal and I will definitely take it. I can’t that you enough for making me happy, giving amazing advice and being an awesome person!
My last audition song was “In My Dreams” from Anastasia for a Peter Pan audition. I didn’t get in the show but the director invited me to audition for another show she was doing (the Little mermaid). Also, tonight I leave for New York. I’m going to see Anastasia, Dear Evan Hansen, and the Spongebob musical! I just thought I would tell you In The comment because you’re one of the main people that got me into acting and musical theatre. Love you! ❤️
1.) Mark the thoughts on your sheet music. Not every thought has to be a whole sentence and can be a word 2.) Writing in the subtext. Take into context guidelines of blocking, where you breathe, tempo changes, dynamics, etc. of how your performance should go 3.) Mark your focus points. Each thought should get a new focus point, and they don’t even have to be big differences. BUT don’t change focus without finishing your thought 4.) Don’t move when you don’t need to. Maybe even mark in your music when you need to move. Don’t have extreme movement. Make every move purposeful 5.) Don’t choose your eyes 6.) Take note of what your character is going through, unless the surrounding environment doesn’t call for it 7.) Make the song personal to you 5.)

My favorite part of musical theatre is the challenge of acting through song. I was lucky enough to be a finalist in KCACTF for musical theatre, and Elijah Caldwell was helping me through my song (Still Hurting from the Last Five Years). One session with him taught me SO much about changing intentions by using different parts of your voice. Amazing!

My last audition song was Requiem from DEH I think? I know it went against Catherine’s general advice since it’s so new BUT the genre, range, character, and themes fit the show I was auditioning for. It was actually a musical called Gen Z that 2 of my amazing and talented theatre friends wrote themselves! It was an ensemble cast, lots of main characters but no lead per say- so I got the role of one of the main characters, and our shows sold out with standing room or almost did! We’ve been in local news and advertisements and stuff, which is really cool, and we’re hoping to do more with the show soon!
The last thing that I sang at an audition was fight for me from heathers. I was auditioning for Veronica it was my first audition EVER and my friends dared me to do it I actually got the part after

A song that is really good for acting practice that I can personally think of is Watch What Happens from Newsies, it's the song the character Katherine sings when she's writing the strike article for the newsies and it is literally one big thought bubble of emotions and questioning and it's good to use this song to practice your acting chops as you slip in and out of different emotions from excited to confuse, to self doubt, it's a wonderful song that could be put to good use in an audition
my voice teacher has taught me all of these things!! right now we’re really working on focus points and i found it helps a lot to keep me grounded in a song because when singing i tend to zone out and just sing rather than act and be engaged, which is sort of a problem. but having specific focus points is super helpful for me. question of the day answer: the last show i auditioned for was my school musical, west side story, and my school gives us songs from the show to sing for auditions. sometimes we have a choice, like this time we had a choice between america and i feel pretty. i sang i feel pretty because the high notes fit just in my range.
my last audition song was “day by day” from godspell i ended up getting to sing that song in the actual show!! my next audition is for a production of newsies and i’m trying to get some helpful tips on how to make my audition stand out! this was a great video and super helpful.

A song that is really good for acting practice that I can personally think of is Watch What Happens from Newsies, it's the song the character Katherine sings when she's writing the strike article for the newsies and it is literally one big thought bubble of emotions and questioning and it's good to use this song to practice your acting chops as you slip in and out of different emotions from excited to confuse, to self doubt, it's a wonderful song that could be put to good use in an audition

my voice teacher has taught me all of these things!! right now we’re really working on focus points and i found it helps a lot to keep me grounded in a song because when singing i tend to zone out and just sing rather than act and be engaged, which is sort of a problem. but having specific focus points is super helpful for me.
question of the day answer: the last show i auditioned for was my school musical, west side story, and my school gives us songs from the show to sing for auditions. sometimes we have a choice, like this time we had a choice between america and i feel pretty. i sang i feel pretty because the high notes fit just in my range.
