Supercell, Intense Downburst and Hail in New Jersey. May 28, 2019.

  • On May 28, 2019, I intercepted a Tornado warned Supercell near Elizabeth New Jersey. I filmed quarter sized hail and a brief period of straight line winds likely over 60 mph within the storm core.
    On this day, a warm front was inching northward through northern Pennsylvania. South of this front, significant amounts of heat and instability built through the day. Storms developed along the boundary by 3pm and moved eastward. With mid level winds of over 60kts, and southerly winds at the surface, a significant amount of speed and directional shear was present. Several of these storms would develop rotating updrafts. Several of these Supercells would go on to produce hail, high winds, and even a few brief tornadoes. The northern most Supercell would continue to move eastward into northern New Jersey, where I filmed its passage around 10 pm that night.

      Your comment reminded me of a movie called Creepshow (1982). In the last segment of that movie, there's a story called "They're creeping up on you". It's a story about a guy named Upson Pratt, who, slowly at first, and then with ever-increasing rapidity, has to try to deal with a humongous swarm of Cockroaches. He ends up having to battle them in the dark, due to one t the worst Thunderstorms in years knocking out the Power Grid, which, of course, knocks out the power in the entirety of New York City! He ends up having a Fatal Heart Attack, and being virtually infested with these Cockroaches, that enter his body through his open mouth and nostrils, and eat his innards. Then, they eat their way out of his body, by somehow eating a hole in his upper chest cavity, and they come pouring out of him like a veritable flood! If you don't have the stomach for it, I don't suggest watching it, even after the gory description that I just gave you!

    What town exactly was the hook echo located relative to where you were? You mentioned you were north of it.

    • @storm12weather
      @storm12weather  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The hook passed about 5 miles to the southwest, through Berkeley Heights, Westfield, Linden, and then Carteret before moving over southern Staten Island. There was another supercell before this that passed just to the north about an hour earlier as well.

    • @DynamicDuo795
      @DynamicDuo795 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @storm12weather , nice. The last supercell that struck our region was back on August 13th of last year. A tornado warning was issued for Somerset, Union, Middlesex, and Hudson counties. I did observe a confirmed hook echo over Roselle Park, NJ, not far from where you filmed this storm, right after it passed over me while I was filming it from home. However, it failed to produce a tornado and continued northeast into Staten Island and Brooklyn. Since 2021, we've definitely experienced very strong thunderstorms, including supercells and tornado activity, which has also greatly increased as well. We've had more twisters pop up than what is considered normal or average for our region. Especially strong tornadoes. The Mullica Hill event in 2021 was one of the strongest tornadoes in New Jersey's history. Confirmed EF3 twister. We shouldn't be getting tornadoes that strong.

      @@storm12weather Derechos have lines of some of the most severe weather that can be found on Planet Earth. I'm guessing that that's what this was...or could've been. I live down in Staunton, Virginia, and we had a Derecho pass through here in late June, 2012. We had similar conditions, and some people lost their power for almost a week! On top of that, it was nearly 100 degrees after that storm so, needless to say, we didn't have an easy time of things. These monsters (Derechos), seem to always find a way to hit you at your weak spots (Like Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, as well as other Electrical needs!), and they'll really put a hurtin' on you. They always find a way to put a real kink in your slinky (So to speak)!

    • @storm12weather
      @storm12weather  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wind shifted a bit during the downburst, but that is not terribly uncommon as downdrafts occuring in the storm can impact wind direction. I was also in the hail core and about 1.5 miles north of the updraft where rotation occurs in the storm. The storm was indeed tornado warned at the time, but if one occured, it would have been under the updraft to the south. I did not notice any noticeable rotation personally. What time period specifically are you referring to if I may ask? Thanks!

      The system that produced these supercells consisted of a stationary front with a surface low off to the west. The upper level winds provided plenty of shear as well.
      This supercell itself, as most thunderstorms, only lasted about 30 minutes, but the large scale setup allowed for several rounds of thunderstorms to impact Pennsylvania and New Jersey over the course of about 60 hours.

    Well, you've earned yourself a subscriber! I don't mind that I can't see it, because I've been blind all my life, and I love storms.
    For the benefit of others who might wonder, I'm typing and can read onscreen text using screen reading software, or specifically text-to-speech software. Oh yes, I can also read Braille, but those displays are quite expensive.
    Keep up the great work.
    Oh and one more thing; great audio quality! Would you believe that binaural stereo audio is the best? It's like I'm there with you, and that's how we hear everything. It can be compared to binoccular vision, because the sound is evenly distributed throughout the cochlea and vestibular nerves. Another comparison is this. If it had been recorded on an older GoPro without the binaural/stereo mic, you can still hear it in both ears, but the audio is compressed so that the sound is concentrated more in the vestibular area which is why people often get a ringing or buzzing in the ears when listening to poor audio quality. Thank you for paying attention to the audio quality as much as the visual quality! It's really appreciated.

      There was no rapid wind shift during this storm so I'm not sure what you're referring to. The wind was out of the WNW and slowly shifted to west as the core passed over. The max gusts occurred directly under the hail core and were exclusively related to the downdraft of the storm. In addition, because storm downdrafts tend to fan out radially in single cells, there actually can be a wind shift as the core passes over.
