Please Note: She is addressing people who have money or high-paying jobs! If you are not rich and do not make a large salary, her information does not apply. If you have median income and cannot afford to buy a home- looking to pay rent- she is NOT talking to you.
She speaks of South Philly as if it's not South Philly. PLEASE NOTE: It is being heavily GENTRIFIED. The people who are from there are still there. The crime rate is REAL and the new housing is a gamble as there is a lot of lipstick being applied to pigs and people are getting stuck in purchases (new roofs leaking, streets sinking, unaddressed plumbing issues.. MICE!!!)
I have lived in major cities all over this country and Philly, MY city, is the highest cost of living for the lowest salaries offered. This is the only place I have had to pay FICA- which is just as much as your federal income tax coming out of your check.
This really seems like an ad to support the regentrification of neighborhoods. Just be warned- again- the people who are from here and are NOT happy with you coming here are STILL here. Developers are New York-ing our city (what is Co-Living??)
We have some of the best restaurants in the country and we are RICH in American History. But, I would not suggest Philly as a place to start/raise a family unless you are in the suburbs. DO YOUR RESEARCH by meeting and talking to a Philadelphian (not a transient). Come visit for a week and watch the news. She didn't mention anything about the aggressive PPA, the unwritten rule that you can sometime run red lights and stop signs, and the rudeness towards other nationalities.
I'm laughing at how she said to avoid areas like North Philly and West Philly- however, they are building the houses she's telling you to buy in those areas and giving the areas cute little names like Northern Liberties and University City to throw you off. DO YOUR RESEARCH before moving here.
For the affluent, it IS a beautiful experience and I agree with everything she said about the possibilities.
For the mid-to-struggling, I'd advise you to go down south!!

I live in Philly and it really is a great city. Sports, museums, concerts, shows, colleges/Universities, parks, culture, community, coffee shops, breweries and endless restaurants, Philly has it..not to mention because of its proximity you can spend a day at the beach, a day in New York, even a day in Maryland or D.C. The suburbs have a lot to offer as well. The cons are right, specifically the crime rate but as with most cities visit the area before you move there and you should be able to make a good choice.

I'm from Philly left and came back. I don't recognize most of the city anymore. Yes, it is going through a huge renaissance. I would buy land and real estate for investments because the city is gowning big time. Put it to you this way. I use to live in South Philly and paid cheap rent. Now, that same apartment is a over 2K a month. You use to be able to buy a nice house for less than 200K, now that will get you a shell or fixer upper. I do miss old school corner stores. I love University City but the real estate their is brutal.

This might start a whole conversation which should stay civil. I'll admit there's a lot I don't know about gentrification when it comes to road design, but this is my perspective as someone who is a cyclist and is interested in urban design.
A lot of people complain that Philly is horrible to drive and park in, but that's part of what makes streets safer, not in terms of violent crime but in terms of traffic accidents. The narrower the streets and the less parking you have, the fewer cars will be on the road. People turn to other forms of transportation instead, and that increases foot traffic which, in turn, increases small business revenue because pedestrians notice more local businesses than people who are focused on the road because they're driving. Plus, I'm a cyclist. If I die on the road or get murdered, what's the difference? A lot of cities people *think* have lower crime rates have higher road fatalities, and I'm not saying it has to be one or the other, but I don't think it's fair to compare safety between cities and not include safety for *all* road users in that discussion. Philly is by far a safer city for cyclists and pedestrians than many other US cities. Hopefully the city can build better bike lanes and continue to design streets that are safe and attractive for pedestrians without tearing down businesses or price gouging homes.

I'm from the northeast though, so I guess you're talking about the ritsy center city areas and the gentrified zones like fishtown.

We welcome everyone here, especially New Yorkers. In fact, many of the construction going on is from New York investors. I don't agree with how this city done this, that's if the program is still in place, but from what I understand, this city offered tax breaks and incentives to people who weren't from Philly to start up a business and etc. I believe the people of Philly should had been offered the same incentive. But it is what it is.

I grew up in Philly back in the 70s and 80s and it was not bad but thats because people looked out for each other unlike today. if you want crime to go away you need to stop standing by and letting it happen. if you see someone being robbed step in and stop it! if you see anything you need to do something you cant just mind your own busness and think its not my problem because next time it could be you and thats the difference people didnt just stand by like people do today. The cops cant stop all crime but people can if you would just take action and kick the shit out of the thugs doing the crime and if people would guess what your crime problem would go down and your city would be safe! I now live in southern Indiana and crime is all but a non issue here because people dont just stand by and watch they get involved and stop it before it starts!

The Mummers` Parade esp. String Bands said so much about the Philly. School district suffered and dropped very from the post WW#2 years. There are some special special magnate programs at a few schools. Owner occupied housing rate was among the highest in major cities. One can walk the Old City and feel the presence of Ben Franklin speaking with John Adams and Thomas Jefferson behind the Old State House. Here is where Rev. Witherspoon argued with Mr. Dickenson and Mister Livingston.

English is pretty good but needs some work, especially if people are going to trust you while you’re filing their real estate contracts!
