Your little man looked so proud to be helping. His smile made me smile. Great job dad.
We have a $10,000 above ground pool with two skimmers and it still doesn't catch all the bugs I don't think anything other than a person permanently patrolling with a net 24/7 would get rid of the debris completely you did a great job Sam
Amazon has pool skimmer socks. They catch everything. Almost nothing gets into the pump basket. However I am retired and can keep an eye on them though the day. They can get so full of pollen at times they can starve the pump of water. So I would suggest not having the sock on when you are not there. But for a retired person this really keeps the pool clean. I have not hand skimmed my pool once this season. Have a nice day!
The problem is probably the placement of the skimmers, pool that come with skimmers have the water return placed and angled so that the water move toward the skimmer, in a above ground round pool that would be turn in circle in the pool witch mean the bugs and anything floating has more chances of ending in the skimmers
Pool skimmers are almost always the wrong height, you are supposed to get a whirlpool/waterfall type effect if that doesn’t happen they are almost useless
Why do you not cover it when not used? It even stays hot for free.
We use a nylon sheet that we simply roll up and down.
10k 😂
Finally someone realized you can work from the outside of the pool instead of leaning over and working from the inside and also not split the butterfly gasket in half! Nice Job!
Yeah, I don't know why so many people choose to make it harder on themselves by doing it from the inside, it's unnecessary...
You are man of many skills. Love how you had your son in the pool helping.
Very nice job there! My only advice would be that where you zip tied that hose to the pool leg, insert an old cut garden hose to absorb vibrations that occur in pool plumbing as the water rushes through the system. This will greatly reduce unwanted cut-in to your new hoses where they touch anything solid like a pool leg or even another nearby hose. This isolating technique I used for years in the car wash industry to eliminate early deterioration of the many plumbing lines that are run throughout car wash facilities. You can use a small cut piece of garden hose or a cut used old radiator hose or even a rolled up old rubber car Matt. Good luck with your pool and you will find many of your best family memories will be made right there in that pool. My grown kids still talk about our midnight summer swims!
Great ideas and thanks for sharing! You are so right!! I have wonderful memories with my son's and my brother in an old above ground pool from 30 years ago. Have a blessed week:)
May the lord bless and protect you and your family and the pool
I love when the boys are involved always a great time.
Great content as always! Love it when your boys pitch in to help. It shows that they really feel a part of the family.
We finally broke down and got a 16inch Intex sand filter. It made a huge difference for our skimmer because of the high volume of water and it being able to push high enough volume into the pool to really keep the water circulating around the pool to the skimmer. best 300 bucks I ever spent.
Wonderful to see your boys enjoying their life! This was a win..win!
Hi Sam and Angela & boys, I bet you are all loving the pool. Can't wait to see the deck!
Hey guys, my husband built a small house over our pool pumps to protect them in the winter and from the sun in summer. Worked great.
We’re can we see it
You could make an opening in the deck to get to the opening of the skimmer. It would be a little trap door.🙂
So glad you’re sharing this. I’ve been stuck working on ground prep still at my place. So I am living vicariously through your videos.
Happy to help! 😎😜
You and Angela are very self sufficient and I always look forward to seeing what your doing next
I had a 15’ round Intex pool that I attached a Hayward skimmer to. I was so nervous to cut the liner but it was the best thing I ever did. I cut the skimmer hole where the outflow was because it was the highest, and then used the intake as the new outflow so I didn’t have any extra holes to contend with. I was also able to attach the Intex adapter directly to the bottom of the skimmer. And yes, Teflon tape is a must! That way I didn’t have to deal with any extra pipe fittings. Having that skimmer saved me so much work! I only had to skim myself after a strong storm. The skimmer also made it easier to connect a Hayward Aqua critter pool vacuum that did the work for me so my maintenance was minimal.
What a great idea to swap the locations of the new skimmer and outflow! I never would have thought of that, but it makes perfect sense! (I also have a 15' round intex ultra frame). Thanks for the awesome idea!
I looove the pool! And how you explain everything so plainly...even I could follow your directions! (just NEVER ask me to finish sheetrock🤣it's bad!) Some great help you have! They are growing up tooooo fast!! Hope y'all have an awesomely blessed weekend! 🙋Hey Angela! Bet you're making soap to beat the band! Have a blessed day!
We used to have a pool, and we had a haywood filter and skimmer. Couldn't have lived without the bug catcher was great. Doug , you right we kept ours halfway. Good luck
Enjoy all your videos. You have beautiful land and home. Your Family are living a wonderful life on your land. You and your wife work hard to keep your home and land in perfect condition. Blessings to you all!
A large piece of shadecloth draped over the pool at night, or when not in use, can help keep bugs and leaves out of the pool, or a pool ‘blanket’ which can also warm the water a little.
OMG Sam!!! You're low key my Hero!!! Brand new pool & you cut a hole in it & then proceed to puncture it 10 more times LOL!!! Great job with Elijah helping!!! And... no Oh fuuuudge moment!! You were guiding that screwdriver wit authority!!! I very much like the placement of the skimmer & how nicely everything buttoned up. I could see you making a privacy screen for all those components in the future also.
Very, very, very enjoyable video again Sam!!! I hope this one hits 1M+ views out of no where also!! Oh & I very much noticed how you DID NOT add "How To" to both video titles. Hoping all is well guys, Dirty Jersey out!!!
I love how informative you are and you involved your son. He learns a lot that way.
Hey Sam. Just fyi. I had an Intex pool set up with a skimmer, and I took left the default suction/inlet things attached using a very similar set up except I had to add shut off valves to everything myself. But! I noticed a remarkable increase in what the skimmer trapped when I closed the two defaults and just let the skimmer be the only inlet. Also, the pool stayed cleaner when we just left the pump running 24/7. We ran it for 5 summers and never had an issue except having to replace a couple cheap gaskets. Just backwashed often and kept up maintenance. It still ran last we had it before I became disabled and couldn't use it. Also, we created a sprayer/sprinkler by splitting the jet line with 2 valves that the kids loved to play in and it kept the pool cool in the Oklahoma heat. Just connect in some PVC and zip tie a arm to the side and drill a line of holes. If you use a gasketed T with ring nuts it makes it adjustable!
Hi . Great job on installing the pool and now the skimmer thingy !! You are a handy man !! Nice . Take care . Deborah 🇨🇦
First time seeing you with out sunglasses on . Love all your videos and content
Great video as always….the skimmers work great…just need to make sure the water level stays up and clean it out every day…we always had one…btw butterfly nets are a great backup to these skimmers…I always found it fun to float around and catch things in the water the skimmer misses 😁
Thanks for the info!
Great video as always. Just make sure that when you build your deck you design it so that you can use it and will like it without modifying it when you decide to take down the pool.....and believe me, you will eventually get tired of maintaining the pool and the kids won't use it nearly as much as they did and you will decide it is more trouble/expense than it is worth! LOL The only way adults truly enjoy the pools is if they are heated. And that is even if it is hot out. A heated pool allows you to stay in longer without getting chilled. I speak from "living in hot Florida" experience. It is MUCH nicer. JMHO Have fun!!!
Nice job on the skimmer. You’ll be happy with it when the trees shed various leaves and buds.
Great video brother. Thanks for the awesome job in explaining everything clearly. Looks like you’re a great Dad too btw.
👍👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ here in Southeast Arkansas we call them bugs "katy dids"😁😁😁 Mr. Sam the whole time you was working on this project I was clinching all my muscles as if I was riding on the back seat of a Harley going 100 miles an hour lol by the time you finished I felt like I had gained nerves of steel😁😁😁 Great Job on your skimmer system👍👍👍👍
According to google picture search, "katy dids" are completely different bugs ;)
Hi you all. In Southern Ohio we call those June Beetles as you called them, June Bugs. Enjoy watching you all. Have a blessed day.
One more improvement I think you should do to your plumbing. You should put another valve where your original intake hoses tee into the line from the skimmer.. This will allow you to adjust the amount of water being pulled from each place. If you use a traditional pool vacuum pole and hose you can custom adjust the flow to what works best. Also either side can be isolated for maintenance without shutting down filtration.
The gray unit I zip tied to the pool leg is a valve for those hoses. :)
Am so glad I saw you add the skimmer. I purchased a new pool last summer and I was told that if I cut into the pool the liner is not strong enough without reinforcement and that it would rip. So afraid to ruin the new pool I let it go and miss it so much. The skimmer you clip over the side is not strong enough. Thank you. I will swallow my fear and tackle it since I have all the parts already. ❤❤
I built a pool deck and added a hayward skimmer to that same pool this year. I got some leaks initially, but used a little "Flex Seal" tape and it seems to be solved. I'd recommend cutting off the second inlet and let all your suction come from the skimmer. It pulls a lot harder but with the 1.5" it should feed more water than the pump can handle and maximize your skimming. We use the second outlet with a smaller pool pump (from previous pool) to feed a solar heater. So we are exchanging from both outlets but getting much better GPH since two pumps are pulling (also warmer water). Great Video, thanks for sharing!
Oh this is great Sam you did a great job setting this up. Bugs in a pool really make me nervous, I would also just get one of those pole nets and be able to just scoop them out. Thanks for this great video have a great rest of your day, sending love and hugs, bye! 🥰😂🤗💜💜👋👋👍
You are very nice to watch and hear. Calm and clear. Keep up the good work!
The boys are enjoying the pool I am sure !!!! But I bet mom and dad are enjoying also😎😎😎😎
I have done several of these glad it worked the way you did it but the easy way is to just pick one top corner of the skimmer bracket take something pointed put one little hole where the first screw goes and then just align it up and then put that screw partially in then go the other top corner do the same and then you can just go around and put the rest of the screws in. I don't cut the hole out until the skimmer is fully mounted. Also, I go over the top seam where it just starts to open up for the support pole, so I can fill the pool all the way and it works great, makes it like a traditional above ground pool. Great job BTW it makes it so much nicer it is a big upgrade a must if you ask me but the first time it is a little scarry though LOL..
We have the same pool and it’s directly under a bunch of trees so it was always a mess .. we upgraded to a bigger sand filter and it was a game changer! I bought that Intex pool skimmer that hangs on the side .. it’s ok but now that I know we can add a real skimmer I’m definitely going to do that! 🥰
I also bought the skimmer that hangs on the side. Used it as-is for the first year or two but then I bought filter socks for the basket and THAT'S been a game changer! I put a rock in there to hold the sock down. But the sock helps catch even the smallest particles which saves the pump and sand filter from working so hard. Highly recommend!!
Super great presentation easy to understand step-by-step instructions I’m going to go get me one of these this spring thank you
Nice video.
I installed one on mine as well as doing all hard piping - less restriction of the water flow. Also upgraded to a 1 1/2hp pump with a 175lb filter with glass instead of sand for the filter media. Yes, it was overkill, but it worked like a charm.
My neighbor (who is owns his own pool cleaning/maintenance company) was impressed.
Great project. I've always wanted to upgrade my pool to have a bottom drain / suction to help keep the bottom clean.
Pool skimmers and bottom cleaners are really nice to have. Saves a lot of cleaning time.
Looks so appealing and refreshing. Sam you made everything look neat and tidy. I love it. I agree with you it looks much more neat and secured. Job well done!!
We were considering do this. After watching this, we are going to do this. The installation looks easy.
* We upgraded our pump to a 1 hp Hayward pump after 1 month. HUGE difference. Floor vacuum (Hayward Wanda) started working like it should. Water easier to keep clean.
* Enclosed the pump in a mini-shed this year. Can barely hear the pump run now.
Followed the links, got the stuff and installed today 6,11,24 . Running like a champ , Love it so far. I did SPLIT the seal and installed it without draining the water. Running good so far.
After 13 years my 9x18 intex is on its last leg. I noticed the top of my bag was being ate up by the sun so I covered it with flex seal it worked but peels some , maybe I’ll use paint on the next one. Also the sun obliterated the liner that attaches to the upright supports on the ground so I definitely will paint them on my next pool. I ended up wiring mine so the uprights wouldn’t slide out. Great video.
Great job Sam! I love your pool. The boys are growing up so fast.
You can buy little "socks" for the skimmer basket, made of fabric similar to pantyhose. I used them when I let my dogs swim in the (inground conventional) pool. I changed it daily for the dog hair buildup.
The little sock kept my primary filter SO much cleaner. I pulled most of the dog hair off the sock manually, then washed them in the laundry, and air dry. (I rotated a set of 4.)
Dogs might not be compatible with an above ground pool, but I thought it was worth mentioning as a cheap but extremely useful skimmer basket upgrade. And the sock certainly catches more human hair, smaller bits of plant debris, etc.
Make sure you get a pack of filter socks. It catches all the small bugs.
Oh awesome! I’ll order some now, thanks!
Frightening to cut into the pool like that!
Feed the "catch" from the skimmer to your chickens, I did, and they loved it.😅
Not if it’s from bleached water!
Sam my brother puts his clorin tablets in the basket when he checks to see is everything balanced. You did good taking it slow to make sure everything was done right.😊
We had an 18 x 36 foot pool and I put the chlorine tablets in the skimmer one time. We went away for the weekend and the pump apparently shut off while we were gone and the chlorine leached out of the skimmer basket down the side of the vinyl lined pool and turned the vinyl into a crisp sheet 1 pool liner totally ruined.
I installed my wide mouth skimmer first. Then cut pool. Perfect every time. But you did great. My skimmer works awesome especially putting the sock over basket.
I'll be putting my Bestway pool up in the next 2 weekends so I ordered this skimmer and extra parts to hook it up. Thanks for taking the time to make this vid. We used to have a 21ft pool so I can't imagine not having the skimmer. I always used the skimmer suction to vacuum the bottom.
Thank you thank you thank you! Super great video from start to finish, especially when lil man was helping. Great job dad! I’m so glad you showed the way your return lines and skimmer went to the pump and filter.
Hi Sam Angela & boys. The pool is so nice!🌷
Very cool! In my friend’s pool we just encourage the bugs or whatever leaves toward the skimmer when we are in the pool. That helps! Tip: secure a pvc pipe to a corner or legs with zip ties that goes up a couple feet above the pool. Great way to store all the floats that have holes in the middle. ❤
I PVCed my pool. And the difference in pumped flow tripled. Compared to the flex rippled hoses. All ripples cause water to flow slower. Straight PVC no obstruction what so ever. It’s a must on above ground pools. In my opinion.
I miss your other videos that aren’t just product reviews. 🥰
I bet the hardest most stressful part was cutting into the pool. Good job 👍🏼.
That reason alone is why I wouldn't do one like this. I just put one that goes in the water and hangs over the top.
Give my Hayward widemouth skimmer on my XTR round 22'. It certainly doesn't catch all the flotsam, but it gets a lot of it. Good job!
Thanks for the video. Great job. Your kid is a credit to you. Mine would just ask me if I'm nearly finished...
Awesome! I am buying the same pool for next summer. Now I will add the skimmer. They also have a water fall you can get for about $50. Thank you !
Great addition. Not 100 percent bug free but helps greatly. You will still need to skim daily.
I just installed the skimmer just like you did and works great and I love it thank you so much for your help
Great video Sam
Happy swimming! I know all to well how much maintenance pools are!!
Those old intakes for the pump are good for another pump inlet and outlet (after cutting the holes bigger). I replaced the small pump that came with the pool with a larger pump with sand filter. I then use the smaller pump plumbed into the old inlets for vacuuming the pool.
Great video, my suggestions is I hope you save the cutout as a patch, and a longer hose for draining the pool
Great idea
I bought a Hayward 1.5 hp pump and Hayward 18” sand filter. The water pressure is amazing returning to the pool! Bro I’m going to do the exact same thing you did here! I’m sick of unhooking my pump hose, then hooking the vacuum hose to vacuum, then hooking the pump hose back, just to do it all over again a few days later. What you have here will help me bypass and vacuum through the skimmer. Thank you
Just remmeber a skimmer also means it can run the pump dry if it drops below intake lvl of the skimmer , because that skimmer doesn't have a lower ballest line , good looking work bud. 18 year pool professional hear , good video man nice job , one other thang to point out you have. 2 side wall intakes shut them down force all suction to skimmer run my skimmers full tilt at night due to bugs goin to pool lights on my 87,000 gallon pool
Far as skimmer placement, I've always seen them located either right around the intake (like you're doing), or directly ACROSS from the output side. Either way (or both) have the skimmer in a direct current that the water flows due to the intake/outputs, and helps with directing the debris towards the skimmer openings. I'd guess you'll have pretty decent results with it being near/above the existing intake, and if you need a 2nd, I'd route it over to the side direct opposite the output myself (I'm at the 4:30 mark, and you may address this at some point further alone, as you usually do on things I think to comment on during a watch, lol).
Also a cleaner way to do the hole cut, go ahead and mount your skimmer with the ring, gasket and box, THEN you your razor knife to trace along the inside of the (blocked) opening. MUCH less chance of messing up on the larger hole that way..
Scratch that, just saw how their gasket set up works, won't work that way, lol.. Carry on, lol.
Great job Sam
I know y’all are enjoying the pool!! 🎉
I bought skimmer socks to put in the sklmmer basket to catch all the small things that would otherwise would pass through.
You're a smart dude Sam..I like your style..
I love the way the gasket is made
Thanks Sam!pool looks great!
Nice job Sam, i think that when you get your deck built the boys can scimm the pool in the mornings a lot better being above the water looking down on it.....
I love those skimmers. There is a lot less work when cleaning the pool. Also more inlet water flow which move the gunk on the surface towards the skimmer/filter. Make sure to do your backflushes to keep from building up a scum layer on your sand in the filter. Ours said the sand would be good for 5 years if taken care of properly.
.When I added a skimmer i changed my output to intake and intakes to output and got rid of the intex flex crap hose. Spent a little $$ but my filter and pump are in the garage. 2 returns and 1 outlet works better for water movement. I also dont have the intex pumpand filter either though. Changed to salt this year😉. Didn't add an extra hole in the liner when I added mine.
really great video! there are several others that cut the gasket into TWO and then cut the opening last, but your method (cut the opening first to fit) makes more sense to me! And thanks for the plumbing tips and parts list! Used those amazon links and ordered!
Glad it helped
Thanks for the awesome step by step. I pretty much copied your design word for word and it’s working great!
I would think that the on and off water flow through skimmer would be a little bit faster. But all and all, a good system. Thanks Sam
I just watched a guy on another channel cut that gasket apart because he said leaving it intact "leaves too much room for error".
Bless his heart. 🙄
I’m surprised they didn’t recommend any silicone in and around the gasket to the main unit. Great job Sam!
We had an in-ground pool, and in the skimmer basket we would find dead baby rabbits, and please don't forget the snakes. WOW!!
As much as i cleaned my in ground pool, debris, bugs would always be on the surface. My skimmer can only do so much, and the pumps dont run 24/7. I purchased the Betta SE, great addition. My surface of my pool is crystal clear, the machine works 24/7, as long as sunshine is available. If there's enough sunlight hitting it during the day, it will run all night. Highly recommended.
Pool party! 🤿🥤🍔🛟
And fried taters and onions and pintos!! With cornbread!!!😮 Fried green maters and cucumbers!!!😮😮 O.K. I gotta stop!!😮😂🤣🤣🤣
Looks great Sam! Now when you do your deck add on don’t forget to be sure it can hold a hot tub! I see one of these in your future !
That looks fantastic!!! I would definitely get a larger pump though…
What a fun family thing to have...enjoy...hugs
Absolutely the best addition I made to our pool. It is a bit disconcerting to make that first cut through the wall, but it is wonderful
Great job Sam! ❤🎉
Thank you!! 😁
Looks really good!! Awesome video 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
Good evening Sam , nice to see you again .
next year, turn your pool around so u don't have to see the skimmer and pipes.very nice pool you got.
Is the Teflon tape keeping you from screwing the fitting all the way to the gasket?
If I were you, I would upgrade to the biggest Intex filter they make that’s the one I use on my 18 foot round pool. I know it’s overkill but when you add a vacuum you need that extra pressure so everything run smoothly. Don’t regret it and it’s only like 300 bucks.
