    This series is great. Not many realize that this is not simply a song analysis but a production seminar. Many of the details you hear that make this and other songs great do not originate from the band itself, but from the producer. So if you listen to all the nuances Rick points out on every song, you will learn more about stuff you only really learn in the studio environment. Great job!

      Not my favourite album (mine is Blood Mountain), but The Hunter is better than Crack the Skye and Leviathan, and million times superior to the last two albums. The reason why I did not like it that much at first was the production, then it has slowly grown on me

    • @DreamPurpleFloyd
      @DreamPurpleFloyd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      To me Mastodon's weak point has always been the vocals. Most of the time they do the job but I never told myself "wow what a great vocal performance", as opposed to say, their drums or their guitars. And that's one of the main reasons I don't like The Hunter a lot : it's one of their most vocal-oriented records. Also the complex song structures and the creative riffs were toned down quite a bit on this one.
      So that's why, as an early Mastodon fan, who loved their progressive instrumentation and didn't care a lot for their vocals, I don't find a lot to enjoy on The Hunter.
      I would never say it's a bad album though, to me it's just not up to Mastodon's best (Leviathan, Crack The Skye).

    • @Arawadewiseman
      @Arawadewiseman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would probably say Blood Mountain is my second to these two. For whatever reason Leviathan always kind of fell flat for me. It just kind of drags along, a lot of the riffs and melodies don’t stand out to me at all (Blood and Thunder is one of the best rock/metal songs ever though). Crack The Sky is great but I can’t tolerate the production. It’s too cloudy and cluttered. I actually love The Hunter from a production standpoint. Also, The Hunter has their best hooks and catchy elements, I feel it’s their most concise album from a song writing standpoint.

      It's too rare to hear open, ringing, full sounding drums. Most things nowadays sound like different sized tupperware. Just thuds of different timbre, just the slightest tone if you're lucky. I've never gotten away from that open sound, haven't put a single piece of tape on a drum in 30 years.
      Plus, it always will help to have Brann on the kit...

Mastodon is one of my favorite bands and even though I've heard this song hundreds of times it's really cool to hear those easy to miss 3rd guitar riffs that you can barely hear on the record isolated. i think there’s a lot of beautiful, yet brutal ambience on Remission, between the bits where they let loose their hardcore roots. Thus why it’s my favourite, there’s space and thoughtfulness, but there’s also incredible tightness and technical prowess. Not to disregard the other records, Blood Mountain is tied first place, but i think now that Mastodon have kinda eschewed a lot of what fuelled them during Remission for something less aggressive, yet warm, it’s nice to look back and be proud.

      In the old records (Remission, Leviathan, Blood mountain), Brann had more space to do crazy fills and quirky timings!
