"If you're wondering what to do with your life...start a Mastodon cover band...you won't be disappointed" - [Matt 2017]
R.I.P drummer
Covering mastodon nearly made my arm fall off
They're impossibly talented
I took that advice😂, no regrets
Blood and Thunder has to be one of the best riffs of the last 20 years. Epic.
It's so simple too.
I had exactly same face as Rabea at 10:05. My god that tone is awesome.
That solo on Jaguar God was amazing. Absolute face melting at 17:02 till the end.
Really think it's about time you guys made an effort and dressed like the artists in question....!
Agreed...
YES.
Rabea should get a face tattoo while he's at it.
Oh yeah....best comment
this made my day lol
This is definitely one of the best if not the best episode so far.
I am with you there Bro
Most definitely
Definitely.
It’s too bad they ruin it by playing all the riffs wrong. Don’t know why they refuse to look up a tab. It takes a few minutes tops.
+jakeybball Rabea learns by ear
Mastodon has always had massive tone since forever, from Remission until today. They've changed their sound and some may not like it, but you can't deny their tones are superb. Bill is a guitar geek and Brent sometimes might not even know what this talking about, but damn they can play.
Just for the record blood and thunder is in D standard, not drop C.
but it still sounds absolutely mean in drop C
It still works in Drop C though
@@andrewpappas9311 I know it does. It actually sounds sick!!! I just like things to be played the way they were written.
I play it in drop d (it makes it easier for the end part)
@@johnlynch3150 then youre playing it wrong and making it harder on yourself because you have to compensate for the incorrect notes. Dont cheat yourself dude.
I get to see Mastodon live tomorrow, so this is on topic.
Awesome, enjoy...
Erik Harker just got to see them last Friday in Arizona and they were absolutely amazing!!!!! you won't be disappointed at all
Erik Harker I'm seeing them in two weeks!
Ill be there too. I saw A Perfect Circle last Thursday and now mastodon tomorrow.
+R Long Awesome!
Sound like gojira maybe?
I've checked their website. They can totally do it for about 1550-1600 pounds, slight bust but it does the sound justice.
YES PLEASE!
Maybe you can pull it off with one of the new Mooer pedals for cheap?
PLEAAAASE
5150 and any guitar with a seymour duncan jb
I have to say this was one of the greatest tones I have EVER heard... just massive! Thank you so much
That Jaguar God solo was breathtaking. I love your taste! You're both incredible players. You totally nailed the tone.
Sound like Opeth PLEASE
Big Bad Buzz opECH?
YES ive been asking for that forever
yes please!
please do a rig to sound like Death meatl Era and Prog Era at the same time!
YES!
I was not expecting this one bit, literally just explosively shat myself with joy
I love the butterslax I would defianatley buy one but I'm not a massive fan of bills sigs his previous guitars where nicer, great to hear some of the new album played as well.
Literally.
when you played the blood&thunder riff i couldn't stop smiling! it was 100% spot on...you guys did a fantastic job on this one!!!
i'm huge mastodon fan so i wished for this for ages so watching this was just pure gold :D
"If you're wondering what to do with your life - start a Mastodon cover band" - got a good chuckle out of that one... Sounded amazing fellas - great work.
Matt sounds huge. More balls and cutting than beas setup. I think the V is not on par with the ltd and the lace pickups
t_separator agreed
It isn't the lace sensors, it is the massively powerful and almost untamable Friedman Butter Slacks behind him. Bea could have cut through that sound if he pushed his AMP up, though it could have also been the Mic setup as the reaction from the guys in the room suggested that Bea's tone was legendary.
You got a point, but remember shit in shit out. The gibson pickups are for that kind of music rather unusable imo. At the end, sound and tone is always subjectiv, and we should enjoy hearing that awesome friedman ;)
That's the point though. Brent has more of a lead, single note, treble heavy sound. Bill has that chunky, meaty, in your face punch to the guts rhythm sound
Probably the most fun I've seen these two have doing a Sounds Like in a long time. Contagious smiles for miles.
Oh my god! Those sounds are absolutely stunning. And that solo at the end....made me cry!!! Well done
That improv Jaguar God solo was insane! The best song on the latest album, possibly one of their best songs to date. Perfect.
Great video! But you might want to disable the "hidden" option.
The Sultans Curse riff sounds so much more grunty the way you guys played it, i don't even care that it's not correct, it's badass.
"Look how they massacred my boy" Bill Kelliher
I know that I'm a bit late to the party, but this episode somehow slipped under my radar. You guys did a great job selecting the gear and playing the riffs. A huge thanks to the both of you!
This was spot on! I love Mastodon's tone, and you guys absolutely nailed it

Pro Co RAT - £176
Digitech Whammy - £170
Total - £1456
Steve Vai:
Ibanez JEM JR - £420
Egnater Tweaker 15 - £430
Boss DD3 - £115
Boss RV6 - £130
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah - £90
Digitech Whammy DT - £210
Tone City Angel Wing Chorus - £45
Total - £1440
that's as far as i know
I don't think TOP would really work since they don't actually use guitars on most of their songs.
William Allison Interesting, but yeah maybe they'll find some kind of Tele for Jonny Greenwood
Not True Scotsman They could do bass, I'm pretty sure Tyler also plays one since I've seen him with a Fender Jaguar Bass on Heathens and Stressed Out and I bet he's played it in concert (Though maybe I'm wrong, I've never seen them in concert but I'd like to)
For metallica just get a Gibson Explorer loaded with EMGs or any of James Hetfields signature ESPs, do the same with Kirk but change the Explorer for a Flying V or a 24 fret Superstrat shape loaded with EMGs as for the amps i am not too sure although I know that Kirk has a signature Roland (or Randall, I am not too sure) head. As for pedals, just get a Dunlop KH signature wah.
As soon as Matt used the POG for the octave effect (10:05), I put an octaver in front of my Egnater and tried my LP tuned to Drop C.
WHY DIDN'T I TRY THIS ANY SOONER!? It sounds huge, ridiculous, monolithic and every adjective similar to that. My new favorite sound!
I just saw these guys live on 4/20 and was stunned by their performance. Instantly a favorite band after that
Holy whoa!~! You guys killed it!! Amazing tones, especially Rabea. I mean, wow, this sounds sooooooo big and right.
This tone is on point. Killer job guys.
"I'm going to get this Keeley Oxblood. I don't know what it is but I'm going to get it because oxes and blood." "I'm also going to get a Klon.." lewl
I absolutely love watching Bea love his tone. Watch this over and over.
Went back and listened to the original video and the tone is leaps and bounds better in this video so good on you, guys! Plus...PLUS, you played OBLIVION!!! YAY!!!
you guys should do sound like megadeth (mustainne and Friedman) with or without busting the bank (no preference). keep up the good work
Easy, USA Jacksons with JB pickups through Marshall half stacks.
it ain't that easy .. Dave was using the CAE S3+ preamp with VHT power amp back in the day ..
*Friedman.
Megadeth would be a good one, budget wise they could use an MG dave signature mini stack with a V equipped with active pups. Likely a Jackson doubt they carry Dean...
stephen garofalo a Jackson King V with Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz set will suffice since he played Jackson for the longest time with this pickup configuration :D
Matt's sound is insane! ❤️
Probably the most satisfying tone I've ever heard! Sounded spot on.
By far and away, this is the best sounds like EVER! Great job guys! 🤘🏻
Tool. by busting the bank
rexhayabusa I second that
They don't stock Diezel amps so they could only get so far with that one.
he used marshall as well so here's my rig set up
Gibson Les Paul Custom (i don't know if they can get the Silverburst one which he uses so the sunburst one will have to be a change of plan)
a marshall JCM head or JVM head
a DD3 Delay
a Boss GE7 cos there's no DOD EQ's
a Phaser and Flanger
and maybe a talkbox
adam jones live setup: two marshalls with unknown mods, one set to boost mids and one set with scooped mids and lots of bass, and paired with both of those is a diezel
Psyfonify isn't it two Diezel's and one Marshall?

Please stop it
Frank Marino..
Mahogany Rush..
And Pat Travers & Iommi
Basically everything
Amazing playing boys...Bea, that solo improv at the end was awesome dude!!!
You really nailed it this time, good job guys! High Road kicked in and I was blown away, I was like THATS IT!
Omg i could listen to that chugging sound all day i love it! Wonder if i can get that tone on Bias FX XD
also, a Periphery sounds like would be awesome too
Keith Ohara they did maiden though
I mean all of periphery’s tone comes from axe fx essentially so what would be the point
@@blakec1414 no on the newer albums its a peavey invective
In the p4 documentary it literally shows them recording with the axe fx. Nice try though
@@blakec1414 well they at least always use the invective as a power amp but i distinctly remember misha saying that in the studio theyre all about tube amps. idk tho, where exactly in the documentary does it show them using exclusively the axe fx?
That solo was amazing! Brilliant tones :) for both.
Guys this is possibly one of the best sounds likes you've done. The tones you got hear are fucking amazing. Really great job!
How about a "Sound like" John Petrucci? with or without busting the bank.
Maybe we can do a little better than that... Watch this space... :-)
Andertons Music Co I know all about it, seen Lee's little sneak peak on Facebook! I'm looking forward to it. Also the Mastodon tone was spot on, great work.
If there's going to be a Captn meets or anything else with Petrucci actually on it, I'm going to die :p That'd be incredible. This video was absolutely amazing by the way, extremely well done and it sounded fantastic and 100% like Mastodon. Cheers and keep it up!
It depends what era you want, classic petrucci was an Ibanez, modern petrucci uses Musicman, and he loves to use Mesa Boogie amps which is way too much so i think this would work
Ibanez RG350 - £400
Egnater Tweaker 15 - £430
Ibanez TS808 - £180
Boss DD3 Delay - £115
Boss CE5 Chorus Ensemble - £90
Dunlop John Petrucci Wah - £200
There is! There's a picture of Lee and John in the room where they film it
Jaguar God song is so great !!! Good job on the tone guys, it's really damn close :O
I was looking foward to this since you posted on instagram for us to guess and was not disappointed. Great job
These are so fun to watch and Rabea's playing is awesome
Butterslax. I just like saying that word. Butterslax Butterslax Butterslax. And the tone sounds better than that! Epic, for both of you. Bea's got some serious mojo going on there, and Matt's solid as a brick. One of the best Sounds Like ever.
FUCK YES I'VE BEEN BEGGING FOR THIS.
That's what she said! :-)
Andertons Music Co hahahaha very nice xD
Couldn't help it... :-)
Pete, is that you replying?
Fuck yea
This is the best tone I've heard you guys get. F-ing brutal!!! Great job!
Mastodon is my favorite band at the moment, and I get to see them tomorrow night, so good timing!
14:37 Bea's pedal punching skills. Level: Expert.
I love this tone but can you guys start showing the pedals settings and where they're at. Thanks Andertons music
Great job guys! This might be my favorite "sounds like" ever.
love the sound you guys got here, such thick tones, dig it
Sounded great.
Sound like Mark Tremonti BY Busting the Bank (two amp set up).
Sound like Iron Maiden BY Busting the Bank
This is my analysis for Iron Maiden BY Busting
for dave's rig: Fender Dave Murray HHH Stratocaster, It's £815 so it may not be SUPER expensive but it is expensive, Victory V100 cos he uses that, Dunlop Cry Baby Wah, an MXR Chorus and a Reverb pedal
for Adrian: not only does he have the signature Jackson SDX but he also has used a Jackson V, an Ibanez Destroyer and a Gibson SG from time to time so in that case, get the expensive £2000 version of the Jackson SDX Adrian Smith signature, a Marshall JCM800 and that should have you sorted
Kevin Tracz I've been asking for Tremonti. if they did alter bridge it would be even better
Yes Alter Bridge would be the best but the most important thing is the two amp set up for Mark. The bogner and the mesa.
Kevin Tracz They could go old school and use the twin reverb too
I would love to see a sounds like Dick Dale. That would be quite a departure from the typical sounds like.
I mean, any strat strung with super thick strings, a Dual Showman and matching 215 cab, with a spring reverb unit and that's *the* sound. His rig wasn't very complex.
That is some of the best playing I've seen from you guys. Well done!
I always love these videos, but this is the best one yet. Rabea's improv solo on Jaguar god was immense!
Sound like Lamb of God?
Mikael Mäkelä noise gate with moderate to high gain lol
Tight picking hand is the only other must I see here. But I still want Rabea to jam some of their riffs. OMERTAAAAAAA!
TheKevinHermon yessss I want to see him play ashes of the wake \m/
Yes please!
Any modern high gain amp with any modern high gain pickup running into it. Scoop the mids and spike the low and highs. Crank the gain. Done.
Sounds like Rush, Motorhead, The Sword, Megadeth plz and thank you
Probably the best sounding Sounds like you guys have ever done!
I had to listen to this video...cause you melted my face with those riffs. Great vid can't wait till next week.
Sound like Evh/sambora please!!
Rabea did a shameless plug in for his amp. He should have gotten an EVH 5150 for an American High Gain or a Mesa for crying out loud LOL
Agreed. Half this channel has become pushing shitty victory amps or crapman guitars.
As soon as he says “Victory” I stop the videos now. I won’t even watch past the point where he first says the word, anymore. He’s lost credibility to me.
good work guys, killer riffs and tones, there's just something magical about stacked overdrive...
Excellent job guys. Great band, great sound, great video!
Sounds like Alex lifeson/rush
Check 'Em yes.
Failed no nut November all within the space of 10:07 - 10:27
dat tone
Bea my good man you are a beast!!! Every time I hear you play it blows my mind!
Nailed it! That tone is so heavenly
sound like black rebel motorcycle club !!!
for a moment i thought that said Black Label Society :P
Please do sounds like the Beatles PLEASE
best tones I've heard from you guys in years!
I think you guys nailed it once again! Mastodon Rocks!
Ritchie Blackmore please!
Which era? Rainbow or Deep Purple?
William Allison either or though I might actually prefer Rainbow
You played Blood and Thunder in the wrong tuning again...
it's Drop D but they did it Drop C
***** It's D Standard and they're doing It in drop C
They are all shitty guitar players, it's like they don't even have ears. I'm not sure how much prep time they get or even need but I learned most of these riffs in less than 5 mins a piece. The intro/verse riff for steambreather is not even close. Idk how they get paid to do this for a living.
Art and let’s see your video of it then.
The truth is they don't play these riffs right and not just on this vid. Maybe not shitty guitarists but they should definitely spend some more time on preparing for these vids. These are not complicated melodies really...
So good. Gave me chills on the Jaguar God solo. Been swimming in that album since it came out. Nailed it guys.
Rebea you are just amazing. That solo though!!
We need a Sounds Like Coheed and Cambria. That would be really awesome to hear
I mean Rabea does resemble the lead singer haha
I fully agree with Coheed. They have the skills to cover some of the more complex stuff as needed and I think they'd both really enjoy covering them.
Tom Bruce I feel like Coheed would be tough. They have such different sounds even on the same album (like "the crowing" vs "blood red summer").
That's why it'd be fun to see them take on the challenge.
coheed!
Sounds like Tool BY busting the bank!
I just got back from the Mastodon show tonight. Sat down. Opened TH-cam, and saw "Sound Like Mastodon uploaded 13 hours ago" I'm trippin right now.
SOME KILLER RIFFS AND TONE GREAT JOB YALL
Sound like dream theater/ john petrucci please!
Sounds like buckethead pls
My favorite band... You guys did it perfect!
This was just fantastic. Best one yet.
Sound like Dream Theater by Busting the Bank!
Sounds like Allman Brothers Band
Another great sounds like! Keep up the good work gentlemen.
OMFG best episode ever. Congratulations guys!
Sounds like Slipknot by busting the bank? Plllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssseeeeee
Sound like Violent Soho?
Bea my good man you are a beast!! Every time I see you play it blows my mind!
Both this and the last Mastodon video were great. You guys rule.
Do Priest for fuck sake. Glenn used an ESP as well.
For the Love of God, Please do a Steve Vai Sounds Like!!!!!
Get his truefire course and he'll teach you himself.
ayyyy
pun intended?
Raymond Gansarski Love the pun
This pun 😂👌🏽
Wow Love that tone Bea.
One of the better episodes imo. Outstanding job
