I really think you guys should’ve mentioned that this SSD comes preinstalled with an app that allows you to update your files, photos, videos, etc. to that app, that can then be locked so if someone were to steal this SSD from you, they’d be prompted to put in a password before they could see anything on it first. A very nice feature and option that not many drives offer.
A number of people are asking how this compares to the Samsung T5. I understand that the T5 uses TLC flash memory blocks where write operations are cached to a buffer which is limited to 10Gb, so if you are transferring data that is >10Gb there is a significant drop in write speed. Someone on a comparison video has posted test results for data >10Gb showing the Samsung drop to 150Mbps - where the SanDisk (which uses MLC) maintains full write speed.
I have one - I use a 500 GB unit with my desktop PC to store ALL my home working files, so I can unplug the SSD and take it with me on vacation, along with my HP laptop. I put a rubber band around it to stop it sliding all over the place. At some point I will move up to the 1TB version. Having all my files with me is great as we are often out of reach of internet via cell service (i.e., the cloud).
SanDisk 'could have' designed a storage groove around the outside of the case for the connection cord. That would have allowed everything to be kept together and possible eliminating digging around for the cord among all the other cords we all carry. Some might argue the potential to lose the cord if it were to come out of the storage groove while carrying it on a carabiner. Simple design solution... one end of the cord would be permanently fixed to the drive. Lacie (sp?) Used this groove storage on ruggedized drives years ago and it was very useful for cord management.
Jeff, I just used a BGNing M.2 NVMe enclosure ($43), WD Black drive (500GB), and a CM USB IF Certified USB C cable. I'm getting over 843 Write & 963 Read speeds from my new Mac Mini. Headed out to get a 1TB 970 Evo on sale. It might smoke this for just a smidge more. I did add some thermal pads to the controller, because it got very hot.

Ijust got the Sandisk Extreme 600 the 500 gb version. One review reported that if you use the included adapter from usb-c to usb-a, it will limit you to 360 gb/sec. Not a big deal really. I tested copy a 900 megabyte 4K file, it took like 2.5 seconds with that converter on. We were using a very powerful imac 5K however with apples SSD's in it & a german made Belkin usb 3 hub. But that almost 1 gb truly felt rocket fast. Even though theres even faster drives on the market today. But for the price, this is a bargain in my opinion. Love it! 👍
For sure... especially when they can make a 500 TB SSD or larger at any time they want but they make more money slowly making them bigger !!! WTF!! Same with computers!!!
ron dill this is true. I’ll bet a 4K TV was invented in the 1900s, but everyone is just using the scrapped blueprints to get to that point as periodic mass releases. Gradually getting to their final result.

In my experience, exfat and macOS don't really work too well. it's extremely flaky. Wherear macOS journaled is native. BUT i'd recommend NTFS for mac (by paradox i think) if you wanna jump back and forth between windows and mac. Works as well as native support and is often bundled with seagate/wd external drives.
How in the world has SanDisk not released a new model yet? This has been their premiere 1 TB SSD for over two years now? I get that it's good, but have they released a newer version with better specs yet?
Yeah, you don't need the dongle but you need a USB-C hub for all that junk we are plugging into our Mac Book Pros. These drives are legit! I work from these after syncing up to my San Disk G-RAID storage vault.
My SanDisk not show up on my MacBook pro, in disk utility also not detected but my SanDisk feels hot. is there a way to fix it to show up on my MacBook please? Thanks
Bought one today from a legit store and started copying the data. 15 mins into the use and it failed. Gave some xfat error and is now not even detectable.
I’ve got and issue trying to use the USB A converter as charger-converter for my iPad Pro with use USB c cable and didn’t work, I’m just wondering if that happened because it’s just data transfer and won’t transfer energy. I’ll appreciate if someone helps me.
I'm on the fence about the Extreme or the Pro version. If I want to start editing on my Macbok Pro or possibly iPad Pro, how do I know if the Pro version would be worth it? The extra speed is definitely tempting! (The pro version is twice as fast, but also twice as expensive) Thank you for your time!
I bought the 2TB Extreme Pro to use it on my 2nd gen iPad Pro. I'm extremely disappointed that they don't work well together. Using Apple's Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to attach the SSD and connect an external power (I used a 30W adapter) through the Lightning port and the SSD would sometimes appear on the Files app then disappear. Sometimes, the drive isn't detected at all. And in some cases, I'd still get a notification that the flash drive needs too much power. I think this is a problem on the iPad, iPadOS or the adapter. And I don't want to buy a new iPad Pro just to make this work. I just expected more from Apple's products.
The iPad is version was 13.1. The best part was that when I plugged it into another iPad which had version 13.2 loaded it stopped showing it. It's very weird. Plz help..I had bought the 2TB to use it with my iPad.
okay i have the 500GB version, the adapter is defective and a lot of times if i move my MacBook Air, it'll "disconnect" even though the adapter is still in the Mac.
Thanks for producing this review. Can you please tell me if this drive is compatible with an iMac Pro running macOS Mojave? According to the packaging this drive is only compatible with macOS High Sierra, Sierra or Mac OS X El Capitan. How do you check the speed of the drive? Are these apps included with a Mac?
I bought one of these ( A 2Tb Extreme Portable SSD) a couple of years ago and it has now stopped working. Okay I have lost all the data but given the so called 'Three Year Warranty' I should be ventilated to a replacement. Sandisk Customer support is awful and there appears to be no response. Right now it appears that £220 went for nothing. Beware you are on your own if it packs up.
Great review. Lots of reviews up, I’m having trouble finding tutorials about how to actually use this ssd for editing in premiere pro on a Mac. Very new to all this and trying to increase speed while editing. Any step by step videos for beginners? Might you point me in the right direction?
I'm assuming MCB is abbreviation for MacBook. If so, you won't need to reformat the drive like how Jeff did in his video. He reformatted into macOS Extended Journaled to see how much faster it could read/write if it were formatted in pure macOS system. Once you get the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD, it's by default formatted in ExFAT (seen in 2:40) which can easily be read and write on macOS or Windows effortlessly when you plug in it. Hope this explains it for you.
Is the iPad Pro the only iPad model that can support this Sandisk Extreme portable SSD? I bought the 1TB (version 2) model. I bought it to use with my PC (no prob) and my “relatively new” iPad Air 4 I bought in January. So far it doesn’t work. Anyone have any suggestions?
I could use that as a boot drive on my 2012 Mac Mini (in place of its internal slow harddrive). I got one a few days ago I had to search how to use on my phone. So still gotta format it. But sounds like sandisk came out with something great again. Only thing I gotta say is his mistake for saying the price is $300 for the 1TB which is not the case. Its $160 on Amazon but still good review
Nice these small portable drives are what all of us who plan to buy the BMPCC 4K on it's release will but using, writing 4K ProRes, needs large capacity fast drives attached to the camera.
Just a question please, in my laptop I don't have ssd, but I have this ssd external hard disk, the copy speed is slow just like any other hdd, should I have ssd in my laptop to be able to copy at fast speed?
Hey,I ordered this SSD upto1050Mbps edition 2TB. Is it really worth it. This is my first experience buying an SSD. I have to transfer files like100-250GB at times.
I have lost its cable & adapter, any recommendation about the cable? I cant get the speed more than 90mbps , i used to get around 300mbps with the default cable
My early 2015 Macbook pro has a USB 3.0 port, which provides 5Gbps max speed. How would this SSD perform on my laptop? Since the ~500MBps (~4Gbps) R/W speed seems to be the upper-bound performance of this drive, which is below 5Gbps provided by my USB 3.0 port, I assume I'll get the same results as you did?
