    25:20 One possibility is that the Italians sold "reparations" austrian revolvers to China.
    In Anthony B. Chan's "Arming the Chinese" (interesting book about the armament of the warlords between 1920 and 1928, perhaps the only one) we learn on page 98 that Cao Kun received from Italy "20,000 revolvers and one million rounds of ammunition" from November 1921 on.
    It would make sense for the Italians to sell non-standard Rast& Gasser revolvers and keep their standard Bodeo revolvers for themselves.
    China was the final destination for many surplus WW1 (and prior) firearms, and I would guess many exotic ones at that (the book explains the Chinese couldn't afford to be picky).

    interesting video, fascinating how Raust was involved in sewing machines and guns and was interested in factories. It reminds me of Hugo Borshardt (famous for the 1893 pistol). He emigrated to america and was a manager at of the the Singer Sewing Machine factories. He was also fascinated by the simlar mass production techniques, like Raust! Great video as always! Keep it up!

    My wife’s father brought one of these back from Normandy. I don’t have any difficulty removing the ejector rod. The retaining pin can be given a half turn and the pin remains withdrawn while the rod slides off easily. I do not have to pound on it at all. I haven’t had much luck finding ammunition for it. I have been told that .32 S&W long would work, but those rounds tend to keyhole.

      Even better!
      For some reason I don't care as much to see the Nagant. Not because it isn't interesting, it is, but it is probably the most well known WW1 revolver and a wealth of videos exists for it already.
      I think a nice series of side videos you could do is recapping various weapons in a class (revolvers, full-sized pistols, pocket .32's, bolt actions, etc.) and getting Mae's opinion on which one of each class she would prefer to take into battle overall. But I think there is a long way to go before the plethora of weapons are covered. Pretty awesome to be 25 weapons in and not even touched upon any British army firearms as of yet.

    In the show Othias said there was a revolver in the trials with 2 loading systhems (gate and swing out).
    There is a video from the "Heeresgeschichtlies Museum HGM" youtube channel showing 2 Steyr revolvers with nagant gas systhem, one with loading gate one with swing out cylinder.
    Only thing is, its in german and is only 1:53 min but I believe you can see the guns if you go to Vienna.

    I binged the whole series over this last weekend, I'm impressed both by the initial quality and the rapid improvement. Plus, unlike the usual, the comment section is actualy readable and useful!
    Also, I'm #TeamPlasticHand
    ETA a question: Is there a reason why Mae keeps the bullets on her back pocket and (in cases like this one) picks them up one by one? I imagine soldiers would have them closer to the gun and pick a handful.

    • @Candrsenal
      @Candrsenal  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Román Gorojovsky We aren't emulating pouches so her pocket is all she has. Given the fact that the revolver must change hands, she can't pre-align a handful of cartridges... so she must grab a wad and load while sorting them. She's not great at pulling all six at once is all.

    To Othias: You really need to get a hold of a 1893 Pieper/Steyr revolver. You particularly would bug out on how genius every little feature about it is. It is the Excalibur of firearms IMHO. Imagine a 1895 Nagant that despite preceding the 1895 Nagant by years, is beautiful, highly precise, has a swing out cylinder and a much nicer trigger (because the breech face is locked by the falling hammer a la Rem. Rolling Block.) If I get a hold of one first, I will lend it to you. However don't hold your breath because they're rare/expensive and I'm neither rich, nor a big time TH-cam star. ..To give an idea of it's genius, it is a triple action without any spring loaded pawl, which if you think about it, should be impossible

    4:50 "He got himself some experience in firearms manufacture (small parts) and sewing machines, interestingly enough." That brought back an old memory. When I was 15, my father took me to a gun show. I still remember seeing a hunting rifle in 6.5 x 55mm made by, of all companies, Husqvarna... which at that point I knew only as a maker of sewing machines.
    I can imagine the conversation between the Swedish husband and wife now.
    "Sven dear, pop out and buy me a new Husqvarna, will you?"
    "Sure thing, love."
    (returns)
    "Umm... Sven... we need to talk."
    Of course it really does make sense; all those fiddly little parts moving around inside...
    As to this revolver itself, the ballistics seem rather anaemic by modern standards, although the bullet is quite heavy when compared to other well-known cartridges in the .32 bracket. Having eight rounds of it probably helped a great deal in comparison with automatics of the time; not that many rounds fewer (if at all) with all the advantages of the old familiar revolver (as they then stood).

    A few things, first: Are there a Roth-Steyr 1907 and a Steyr M1912 in the future? And in terms of power, looking at the numbers regarding Muzzle Energy the 8mm Gasser cartridge is actually around that of the .380 ACP, so still not excellent for modern standards but still better than a .32 ACP cartridge. Love the show, keep it up!

    • @Candrsenal
      @Candrsenal  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Procket12 Yeah, it does close on .380 in some ways but that diameter is just a bit lacking.
      Both pieces you've requested have been fired. Just gotta wade through the heavy and slow translation process and film indoors. So... we might hit some English language source guns along the way to free up time.

    • @acidwizzardbastard

      .380 levels of energy aren't bad. Especially if you have eight cartridges with that power, in a revolver, in 1898.

    I'd like to add one thing that in my opinion goes missing about the "small caliber issue" that was brought up in this video:
    You should bear in mind that those guns were usually meant as secondary armament in conjunction with a sabre.
    so I guess they favoured more shots over stopping power of each round, assuming that the sabre would help, if someone would come to close to be stopped imediately stopped by a shot from this weapon. So together with a sabre, a cutlass, a club or spade, a revolver like this could actually do quite well throughout the war.

    This thing's probably among the best revolvers of the 1800s. The design looks back at old issues that certain kinds of revolver have and fixes them. Hell, it fixes one problem inherent to most revolvers - the small capacity 5 or 6 round cylinders. (I don't like how the grip is shaped though.)

    As I’ve got older I’ve started to appreciate older guns for example single actions. But i also love double action these guns seem to me wonderful in a sense single/double granted a pretty anemic cartridge but still pretty revolutionary and i like that the rod to extract the spent cartridges is fixed and not that pull out then swing to the side like most others. I personally think that was a bad idea for possibly damaging or something while in war. Even tho it makes the pistols more “clean” looking and nicer aesthetically

    +C&Rsenal Cool video about a cool piece. I've heard of these before, but I've never seen anyone cover one in a video. That swing-down trigger guard is a nice piece of engineering - no need for a screwdriver or other tools. It reminds me of the M1 Garand - I wonder if John Garand drew some inspiration from this revolver. Any thoughts?
    Here's an idea for a cool video: Every time I watch your videos, I always find myself looking at all those lovely rifles behind you, trying to identify them. Some are easy (that SMLE nosecap is a dead give away) but I don't recognize others. It might just be a fun FAQ video for you to quickly take them off the shelf and say what they are!

    • @Candrsenal
      @Candrsenal  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +fhsreelfilms take down features like that had been around in the commercial market. I am sure Garand just used what was out there for inspiration.

      Doing that it´s a good way to geting shot or shooting somone, Think of when you are tired and rushed and you shall unload a revolver with live rounds. you better do it in the right all in the right order and that safety better work.

    • @ZGryphon
      @ZGryphon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exploatores I don't dispute that. I was just noting that our modern preoccupation with staying off the trigger might seem strange to someone in 1898, when this revolver was designed. "Safety culture" wasn't really a thing then.

    Theoretical technical question. Say you are unloading the gun using the ejector rod and you are in a hurry; if you pull the trigger to advance to the next chamber and you haven't completely cleared the ejector rod from the now empty chamber, can you bend the ejector rod and make it inoperable, or is the force of the cylinder turning not enough to actually damage the ejector if it wasn't completely cleared? I would think this is a universal concern for abadie loaders, maybe it isn't though.

    • @Candrsenal
      @Candrsenal  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd have to crank on that trigger pretty hard and even then I feel like some of the internals would give first.

    I actually like the loading system. A swing out cylinder can be faster especially with clips or speed loaders, but this system I found in the one example I got to use, was fast with loss ammo. If you have your ammo set-up 8 rounds per bunch, you can load it really fast.

    Hello all I was wondering if any consideration for military career length of an individual soldier been considered in the production of these videos. For instance I served from 1987 to 1995 and although the military switched to the Beretta from the 1911 platform, I served in Persian Gulf War with Vietnam era 1911 and M16A1. So a service member with let say a 20 year career in military service could see lots of changes over time, and soldier with only a few years of service might not see as many changes. Hope that was a clear question. Thanks for all the great work.

    As to the comment about loading the revolver being awkward since you have to switch hands, you don't need to switch hands, for this. When I shoot this pistol and my swiss revolvers with abadie system, I just leave it in my right hand, open the gate, eject and load with my left hand, my right hand stays on the grip and runs the trigger to rotate the cylinder. Simple and no awkwardness.
