      I've never heard that before but Toyota's HEVs (hybrid electric vehicles) do drive in EV mode when going slowly in traffic or waiting at a stop sign. Unfortunately, you can't force it to drive in EV mode. It's automatic, but it would be a nice feature. However, the 1.3 KWH drive battery in my Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is too small and it would be nice if it were more like 3 KWH. Remember, each KWH will get you at least 3 miles. (At $3.80/gal gasoline in California and $0.43/KWH electricity, it's significantly cheaper to drive a hybrid than a pure EV.)

    I have had a Chevy Bolt EUV for over 2 years and it is the best car I have ever owned in so many ways including zero defects and great design. GM probably lost a bundle on that sale so the question of when they will be profitable on EV’s is really important in terms of knowing whether they will stick with it. Scale is critical and it appears that they are starting to achieve it. I should point out that most of the Chinese EV’s are not yet profitable yet either. BYD is apparently profitable and a few others should be profitable in 2025, Besides scale, you also need high reliability since warranty claims and recalls can quickly bleed off any profits you are booking. Time will tell. I think the big challenge for US manufacturers other than Tesla is going to be their business model. Franchised dealers rely on service revenue and with EV’s there isn’t much. My only service costs over two years of ownership have been tire rotation.

    • @travisjazzbo3490
      @travisjazzbo3490 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      True... but you have to remember that Tesla came from NOWHERE and couldn't afford to burn through billions like GM can. They had to figure out a way to make money fast and become the powerhouse they are in the time they did which no one else has touched. Making super cheap cars that everyone could afford would have meant extremely tiny margins and imagine the problems they would have had to deal with if they went that route!
      They did what they did in a calculated way so they could make money and get through very trying times, the same as many of come and gone through the years that were all supposed to beat Tesla, but even Rivian is getting billions more invested to get to profitability at some point. No one as come close to Tesla, except China of course.
      Having said that, here we go! I expect in 18 months Tesla will have a very affordable EV for the masses AND by then FSD will be unbelievably strong, if not complete... So the next steps of Tesla, between the Semi, FSD, robotics, mass storage commercial battery biz, and affordable EVs... gonna be interesting

      Dealerships make most of their profits from the workshop, servicing and repairs are what keeps the lights on and the management getting those big bonuses.
      EVs require virtually zero maintenance and servicing.
      I fully expect over the next 5-10 years a lot of dealerships will close the doors and instead of having individual dealerships they will have just a sales showroom like a retail store and a workshop will be a hub for several manufacturers together, the reduction in mechanical repairs and serving will become a real problem for a lot of mechanics in the coming years/decade.
      And that is my opinion, 26 years as a vehicle technician/master technician/diagnostic technician and mechanical fitter plus a few other accolades 😅.
      I have left the motor trade for a while as i had foreseen this coming 5+ years ago, although I have my Electric vehicle training/disconnect & isolation, next month I’m due to complete cert 4 in electric vehicle battery repair and maintenance, mainly to keep up to date with technology but also as something to fall back on if needed.

      No, that's no how it works. Their "loss" includes amortizing sunk costs, like R&D and manufacturing plants, not just per-vehicle materials and labor costs. Spend $100 in amortized sunk costs but only produce 1 widget for $1, then each widget lost $99. Sell 50 widgets at $1 each, then each widget loses only $2. If you can ramp up production on the same equipment and same time period, then each sale decreases the unit cost.

    Most of us love our Bolts. They are slow to charge, but that's no problem for me. When it needs a charge I plug it in after 9PM when Alabama Power cuts my rates for having an electric vehicle. I also turn on the washer, dryer, and dishwasher when I go to bed. I have timers on my water heaters and they only heat between 9PM and 5AM when my rates are low. I never run out of hot water. Saves me a lot on my power bill. I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee (2014 before Stellantis destroyed the brand) with a Hemi. I use it for towing and travel. I filled it up in October and It's down to 1/2 tank. Looks like I may have to fill it again in March. The Bolt handles 90% of my driving needs. It was built in Dearborn, Michigan. My Jeep was built in Detroit. The incentive to the tariffs is to bring those jobs back home. I hope it works.

      You could look into pricing rooftop solar with battery backup, in which case you might not pay anything for your electricity. That's what we have, and over the past three years our power company has been cutting us a substantial end-of-year check for selling back excess power our system generates into the grid. In a nutshell, we mainly live off our own solar-generated power from the rooftop and what we store in the battery backup. That will change this year however as we just bought a second Tesla for my wife: the refreshed Model 3. We love the convenience of "fueling" up the vehicles at home. And if we need to rely on the grid to fuel up a vehicle at night, we pull from the battery and schedule the session to take advantage of cheaper off-peak rates. All over No. CA people are bemoaning the frequent hike in electricity rates. Not us.

    It's interesting that in a recent episode, the Electric Viking named Tesla's refreshed Model 3 the best EV for 2024. Especially for the price. We bought one for my wife last month. I bought my own Tesla, a Model Y, 2 years ago and am still impressed with every aspect of the car: handling, design, comfort, spaciousness, range (although at 300+ miles, it could be better), electronics (navigation, control settings, software updates, Tesla's phone app, etc.), audio system, and elimination of road noise. It verges on being a work of art and I'm constantly impressed how it remains a pleasure to drive. But the new Model 3 is even better. That and the refreshed Tesla Model Y, when it comes out this month or next, are the standard by which other EVs should be judged. I can't emphasize enough to DO YOUR HOMEWORK on whatever car you're considering and compare it against the refreshed Teslas to give it a fair evaluation. Whatever you decide, you will be confident you made the right choice.

    People keep talking about EV profitability.
    You're going to have problems with that in a changeover, BUT, eventually you aren't building battery plants, and retooling factories anymore.
    Then you can actually start making money.
    The trick is to survive long enough to get to that point.
    We will see which, if any, legacy brands make it to that place.

      Nice to hear some one else saying this. There are a lot of costs in a transition, which is why business are understandably not keen to jump in unless they are either sure it is a winner or they are forced to. Retooling, retraining and new R&D costs are significant.
      And you also have to keep the old lines going. The cost of this are huge and risky and can make or break management careers.
      Interestingly, Jaguar decided to shut for a year to make a fast transition. In theory that will cut some of the costs of having two lines, and you could gain more than you lose by having a fast transition. It’s bold, but not as crazy as it at first seems.

If you own a cyber truck your going to get some negative attention. I would not be surprised 50 percent of these gm sales would have been Tesla sales if musk was not the CEO and it's going to get better for gm . The y and 3 are bubble cars . It is good that GM is doing better on the EV front. They need to take advantage of the US government's tariff protections while they have them. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Trump will make good on his promise to put tariffs on Mexican and Canadian vehicles. If that happens, it will upset the car market in the US. Trump is not keen on EVs but will be prone to help Elon even as Tesla slips in sales. So, EV sales will be mixed with many unknowns in the US. With that said, the trends in favor of EVs are positive and moving away from ICE in the US and worldwide. No matter what Trump does, the transition to EVs is well underway. It can be slowed but not stopped. A larger question is whether the US and Europe can ever catch up with China in EV production and quality. At the very least, GM is showing that it is still in the game and is serious about EVs.

    GM never had a problem selling EVs. They had a problem making them. You have to have the product on the dealer’s floor to sell it, the way they sell their cars. They have a huge existing customer base to try to sell to. Now they need to add a “car” to the lineup. Not everyone wants an SUV. Chevy and Buick need a “car” in their lineup, to address the Model 3 market. An EV Monte Carlo/Malibu and a Riviera/Wildcat performance “near luxury” version.

      Agreed on tech, but GM offers flavors Tesla doesn't. You've seen one Tesla car and you have seen them all, except Cyber truck which is dang ugly IMO. Tesla is blowing their lead...they have more stock value than the top 4 auto makers in the world, yet aren't using that value to launch many different car/Suv styles, or buy up other automakers, like Jeep would be great...and they could probably get it from Stellantis which needs money.

    • @shepherdsknoll
      @shepherdsknoll วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @jeffstewart3170, I think you miss the point. Tesla makes a proprietary, fully integrated EV, this means they manufacture their own components and write their own software. This is very important because all the functions of the car go through one main operating system from a very powerful GPU, this allows operation of all the car’s functions, from window switches to the battery management system that can even be adjusted OTA, you’ve heard that Teslas are not cars, but rather computers on wheels, this is why. GM does not manufacture their own components or write their own software, they assemble a car with components from Bosch, AC Delco and others who all write their own software, Ford , I believe has as many as 5-6 different operating systems in their Mach E, this is the reason a Tesla is a Tesla, you’re not buying just an electric motor and battery you are buying the complete package. When you buy a Tesla you are buying the equivalent of a smart phone, buying from GM you are buying the equivalent of a flip phone.
