Dear Harriet! The reason you "ferment" the seeds to get the gelatin off is because these plants spread with poop 😅 the gelatin protects the seeds from the animals stomach acids and prepares it for germination!
For those who don't know what courgettes is, zucchini. The yellow zucchini is very nice, I hope you kept some seeds of that. It is a rare kind of yellow
I was reading that tomato branches etc. are toxic to goats. What I read said: “The leaves, as well as the stems and vines of the tomato plants, can be toxic to goats. Goats should never eat any green parts of the tomato plant, including green fruit. The toxins in the fruit decline as it ripens, but in the other parts of the plant, the concentrations do not decline”. I hope this helps. Thank you for another wonderful video
Have you thought about dehydrating courgette slices? Just need to slice thinly, put on some of your favourite sauce or spices and then dehydrate. With all the sun you have you could do them on covered trays outside. They make a great snack.
Good idea to put the riper tomatoes in with the green ones BUT those riper tomatoes should be at the top of the pile as the ripening gas is heavier than air. Your dogs have a great life!
The coating on the seeds prevents them from germinating before they are sufficiently rotted or digested and passed along by an animal who eats the fruit. Also its generally a good idea to cut the rootstock of plants right at or just below the soil line. You leave more nutrients and have a looser soil if you leave the roots behind whenever possible. Just something to consider next time you are looking to remove plants from a bed.
Hello Harriet and Mauro, I admire Harriet with her perseverance, she tries to bring everything to a successful conclusion and her work ethic!! Beautiful the way you have found your place, I am jealous of you and such a woman who tackles everything, I really love you!! If the fuel wasn't so expensive, I'd lend a hand on your farm. I am a retired single divorced man and fit enough to work in the garden, I now only have 2m2 of garden but I get a lot out of it in combined cultivation, I used to sit in the school gardens when I was young and I still pick the fruits of literally and figuratively. Delicious vegetables from my own garden and on the table within half an hour.. When you get older you don't have as much hunger as when you are 25, but I am satisfied with everything I do, only the village where I live in Belgium I don't know anyone, and would like to live on the farmstead, it's great to see you busy, congratulations on such a nice place, Many sweet greetings Ben Balkan
The zucchini filler can be cooked and is very yummy. Fry some diced onions, then add the the zucchini filler, minus the seeds, and fry on medium low heat, add salt and dried mint and some tomatoes paste, you can add also some hot sauce if you like. Summer for 3 minutes until done. Enjoy on toast or with pita or Naan bread.
The vines could be great mulch for your newer trees, just chop them up, spread under the trees away from the trunk. The moisture in those vines will help keep the trees growing while you do less watering. This can be done with other plants, chopped and dropped on beds over the winter if you're not planting or if you want to put seeds in and have a cover to keep moisture in. The grasses now shriveled up can make good surface for the chickens, the grades draw in insects for the birds.
Yes, chop and drop is definitely the way to go; less trundling stuff around the place. Just cover, keep moist, and let the soil life do the composting for you. Love your channel. Stay safe and well.
In Mexico cooking squash in a pot with a little bit of water and yellow cheese is wonderfully. Are you vegatarians?, Can you grow peanuts?, Have you heard of Catalina salad dressing. It is a tomato paste vinegar based dressing I think invented on Catalina island outside of Los Angeles for the movie stars. I like corn tortillas strips with cheese on top covered with taco sauce and tomato rice and refried. Pinto beans and a Mexican cola cola made with real sugar. My grandfather's family was from the Canary islands he was from Texas and used to like to cook cattle heads in the oven, my mother did not think it was funny
Bom dia Harriet! My husband and I have just enjoyed watching this excellent video and we love your approach and attitude. Thank you so much for including all the detail + information. SOOO helpful and informative!! ...For example, I've long been mystified by chutney - why is it good? What can it be used with? Does it only go with Indian dishes, for example. You have an ability to explain things so simply and clearly, - now I think I'll have a stab at making some myself! Your videos have a refreshing down to earth and unprententious vibe, as well as being very educational. Thanks so much again!!
A very yummy use for your courgettes is to slice them and pop in a fry pan with olive oil, sliced onion (long ways) and a sprinkle of salt. Cover with a lid and cook under everything is soft and just starting to brown and then sprinkle with balsamic vinegar.
amazing HE is part of videos! and SHE is back to stop the fire. ok, be together on videos as so different angles and views, just now I catched this how I was missing the Mauro on the videos. to make it right, together, not alone fighting the chores. so, just as an idea. mb it is worth to pay off the next fire by building some kind of fire protection from a distance? tractro can keep nice 2 size of a road line... just dont let it go like without the pay off. this is HUGE good luck for you guys and I feel blesses to see you are safe. Mauro, very well done for preparation and risk management.

Hi Harriet! I'm glad that you feel revitalized after your break. The list of jobs you made for yourself is extensive! Just think, you may be the first to make "Fried BLUE Tomatoes"! Three things I loved: Oona helping with the chickens; the sound of the goats munching the tomato plants; and you cutting zinnias for their sheer beauty.
Another busy week, Harriet! Your harvest looks gorgeous so far! When we had an allotment, cumin soup/stew was always a firm favourite using up our courgettes! Take care, Laura 🐶🐶❤️
Tomato leaves are poisonous for goats! They can eat the fruit though. I do no know for courgette, but usually the gel or film prevents sprouting. Should be the same here.
Don't feed the tomato plants to the goats. Tomatoes are in the Nightshade family. The fruit is edible (obviously) but the leaves and stems are poisonous.
heads up about feeding tomato plants to livestock: "The leaves of tomato plants contain high levels of alkaloids, which are toxic to ruminant animals. While small amounts may not be life-threatening, it’s best to avoid them altogether as little as half a tomato plant can cause toxicity in your goat"
Glad to learn that it’s calmed down. I understand the worry and emotion around the fires. This is our first summer without weeks of heat and fires. There are fires in California this season, but no looming huge fires to the south of us (Oregon) nor to the north (British Columbia) of us. In years past we’ve experienced smoke arriving from the south and the north as well as our own here in the state of Washington. Pretty frightening and uncomfortable.
Love the garden and your harvest. Tomato stems and leaves are highly toxic to goats (and many other animals, they're nightshades) so maybe don't feed them those!
Ohh, of course... I was just thinking "goats can eat anything" lol but yeah of course tomato is a nightshade plant. I guess that bundle's going in the compost. Thank you!
How do you manage to keep the dogs and cats out of your vegetable beds it's amazing they're not digging in there all the time or even eating the produce
Pallet wood never lasts So sometimes you need to use something else They use pallets for garden furniture here but it’s a waste of time because it lasts only a year and it limits the size of the chairs and tables
i’m glad you survived the wild fires! the courgette seeds are covered in a film that protects it from germinating to early. that‘s why a fermentation is better before storing them. you do the same with the slime on tomato seeds.
I was wondering why you don’t waterbath your vegetables? I’m the US we pressure can low acid foods and water bath high acid foods to prevent spoilage and/or botchulism
In the case of chutney it is acidic enough that I feel comfortable boiling the jars to sterilise and adding just boiled liquid to them. I know some would prefer to waterbath but personally I am comfortable with the safety of this method!
Found out why cucumber and tomato seeds are fermented. There's a substance in the surrounding flesh that inhibits sprouting, which makes sense if the plants don't want new plants inside the fruits. The seeds you want to keep for cucumbers go to the bottom of a cup of clean water.
Great video again Harriet .our crops here in Seville province are at the same stage as yours I have started pulling some up. What was the cover crop.seeds you used. Did you get them in Spain? Many thanks. Loved Tofu seeing off the chickens whilst Oona wasn't sure.
quee lindo el sonido de las camanas.. que pena sacar los mega girasoles...yo este año me volví loca plantando girasoles. please send me your newsletter. I'm just following at instagram. Beautifull garden... Toffou toffou.!!!! is great with the chicken.!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada. I don’t think the bug is a cicada. I’m not familiar with what it is but it’s some sort of bug that a predator with a tail like that. I don’t kill bugs randomly as nature usually has checks and balances and if we leave it alone it will settle itself. I just thought you might know. I will say a cicada is very loud.

Thank you! A few othet folks commented about the tomato leaves, luckily, so I was able to compost them before feeding them to the goats thankfully!
Eat the flowers From the courgettes they are delicious!
Leave sunflowers in the garden for the birds

I saw on a TH-cam channel that you can batter and deep fry the squash flower. It's probably both reasons you mentioned about why you soak the seeds.
