There is nothing more important than health. I have been disabled from chronic illness for 14 years since my mid 20s. At the time I was trying to do too much, be too much. I don't know whether it played a part, but it surely didn't help. Since then I've given up so very many of my dreams, and now walking and using my hands is difficult. If only I had appreciated what I had at the time and taken the chance to slow down and look after my body. There are many people worse off than me too, so I try to be grateful for the function I have. The message I would give you Harriet, is take all the time to heal, try not to be impatient, by healing properly you're investing in your future health. It has at least (perhaps) given you an appreciation of how important health is.... So I do hope we'll see you slowing down a bit! Balancing your health and general well-being vs your projects should be give and take, not just give, give, give! ❤️❤️
I've planted a medlar in my garden in north Wales. It makes an attractive small tree with beautiful white flowers. I've never used the fruit, although they can be used for making a jelly. You have to "blet" the fruit, which means allowing it to go nearly rotten before using it.
It is nice to see you out and about. Get well soon... Life is full of surprises, it taught me never to take body and health for granted. It is a short stage and hopefully you will get back to normal soon.
Hi Harriet -- How wonderful to see you! I like the Wednesday premiere, as everybody publishes on Sundays! A sense of gratitude for all your body can do is a great thing to carry with you. I love how Oona is your little shadow (so cute during the succulent-potting scene!). I hope your pear tree and all the new trees thrive and bear fruit.
I've found you because we are moving from belgium to spain between Valencia and Alicante. We hope to find a place like yours cause we have a real good place in nature here. I like your videos very much because it's quiet for my soul and my motivation still on top! Thank you, gracias, merci 🙂
Every time you surprise me a bit more Harriet, nothing stops you! I couldn't believe it when I saw you on the roof, you are an inspiration to all would be off grid women 😘
So pleased u r on the mend, the body is an amazing thing! We take it so for granted until we have health issues crop up. Great idea for pots I found when I lived in Spain were cactus and succulents 😘🌵
You are a very brave lady for going up on your roof to fix the chimney and the place where the brick was leaking. You must take it easy with yourself. You are a very hard worker! 🙏🙏
Hope you get back to full strength soon Harriet. If we haven't got our health it slows us down. We have a warm October in the UK too, the trees are still green where I live and flowers are still blooming. I even have roses out. Take care of yourself.
I'm sure that all your different planting will be a success. From the roof you can have a nice look at the property, and I noticed a sense of proud in your expression. Happy foy you
I absolute love love ❤️ your videos!! You and Mauro are such an inspiration!!! 🙌🏻🦋🙌🏻 May God continue to bless you!!🙏🏻 Sometimes when I’m sick I feel like God is telling me to rest, relax & take care of myself 😘😘😘
I thoroughly enjoy this channel. Its wonderful getting to see your week, all the Projects. You certainly had a lot of help planting that pear tree. And look at Oona, hiking with the family. She is so cute. Don't over do things after surgery.
West Coast is still warm, but finally got rain. A temperate rainforest without rain has been hard, especially on the garden and wildlife. Drought in a rainforest? Yes. Cleaning out the stove is very smart, few people do it because it's such a messy process. The compost could benefit from being turned once more, then covered. Your worm farm may need a bank of leaves to keep the animals from freezing, although it's unlikely under "normal" conditions, our weather systems are definitely not "normal" as much. Mauro looks much calmer and healthier. You really didn't "lose" a month's work, you gained a better future for your body and health. Sometimes we just need to slow down, sleep, and enjoy autumn.
Your compost looks great! I envy your herb garden, and it's going to be fragrant especially in spring. I took cuttings from the rosemary this year, you reminded me to pot them up now. Oregano, can't have too much, nor mint plants. 😃
It's so warm and sticky here in Barcelona I have been surprised after we had a cool two weeks in September that it's back to near summer temperatures (34C was the high for us and it's going to be 30 this weekend).
You are doing something so unique and I am sure the interest in your home is enjoyable. In high school my two friends lived on a five acre place with horses and interesting buildings and I have such fond memories, I could have attended a different school and made different friends but this experience was more than enough
Hi Harriet, I am sorry to hear you have been unwell. Don’t overdo it for a while. I am concerned I didn’t see Tofu in this video & hope I didn’t miss some bad news. FYI, when planting trees don’t put compost too near the trunk as it can cause collar rot. Also it is beneficial to tease the roots a little when they come out of a pot (if pot bound). 😊
Harriet I certainly relate. I had skin cancer removed in February, I broke my right hand in July, I watered my xlarge garden by hand carrying water with my nondominate hand. August broth 3 weeks of poison oak which required shots and medication then it returned in October with more Dr visits medications and an allergic reaction to medication. This past month I had 5 occasions of a total of 17 bee stings near my garden beds. I'm using a poultice of essential oils because of xlarge welts that hurt and are painful. I planted 4 apple trees and a pear tree along with a patio peach tree. I enjoy your videos.
I noticed that you planted your mint and Oregon as they come in one hole in the ground. Those two herbs are better off to be split and planted over a larger space. What you can do is split them into at least 5-7 sections for mint (based on the size of plant I can see). And splint oregano into at least 10 plants and leave some space between them. The splitting of these specific herbs would give you a very large bed of them fast and also tend to be more successful. This is my experience over the years with them. The way you did it is ok, but I found the splitting and planting over larger space tend to grow faster and give you much more yield as well.
Oh I should have thought of that. Especially since I am always digging up oregano trying to split it. And I could have done it right then! You can never have too much oregano in my opinion!
Been watching your channel for about a month now and bloody hell your one resourceful lady! I'm only a 20 year old parks and gardens apprentice, but I hope to be like you one day. For quite a while my dream has been very similar to what you guys are actually doing. So cool! Love your videos!
I'm from the Island of Guam a U.S. Territory and although we don't have winter we do have Monsoon which will rain for months so definitely wood gathering for cooking was a challenge. I lived on the family farm solo for two years it was amazing and in 2021 I relocated back to the States but I loved every moment I spent at the ranch! Thanks for sharing your amazing and challenging life❣
Hi Harriet & Mauro. I recently discovered your channel & am enjoying your videos a great deal. A couple of points for you: 1. I put a drain pipe in along side each sapling tree so that the water is delivered directly to the roots. I picked up this technique from studying tree & shrub planting of semi-arid areas where desertification is a problem. When you water in the usual way from above, the water can evaporate & be lost before it ever gets to the tree roots. By placing a pipe alongside the tree when it's planted, this ensures all the water gets to the roots, thus reducing watering effort. I have used this approach with my own fruit trees & it works well. I put the 'plant' the pipe (old drainpipes are good) about 30 cm away from the trunk to allow for growth & staking. 2. I noticed you were using black or dark coloured pots for your herbs outside the kitchen. Black surfaces absorb the sun's heat the most hence they will dry out faster. I suggest you use white pots instead (or paint your pots with whitewash or similar) as this will reduce heating & thus evaporation in the summer. We live in Motherwell in SW Scotland where rainfall is much higher than eastern Spain so water isn't any issue usually. However, climate change predictions for western Europe suggest drought is likely to become a greater problem going forward, particularly in the light of the shenanigans at COP 27..
You might attach a ring thru your door tiles into wood with a nut to have a permanent harness attachment on the roof. Wearing heavy boots might break tiles, sodium chloride can greatLy quicken setting up and hardening.
Strange October indeed! Over in Florida, US, I've been keeping a bit of a close eye on the weather around this time each year, and for us the past few years we've hardly had a proper "Winter" at all, except for the one week out of the year that it gets blistering cold. I love watching the progress on the property, and I hope all goes well for you all

Besos❣️❣️❣️
All respect to you Harriet and Mauro. You've done an amazing job moving to countryside. Watching your videos reminds me why I chose that in my life I'll work smarter and not harder. I sold my apartment in the city and moved to national park. I don't have any similar exsistential problems. I just enjoy life with my primary school daughter and Amstaff girl. As a single dad I have all the time to explore nature, enjoy life in general and make a living from my hobbies. I sill love watching you work hard and get the results. I'm just gratefull that I don't have to go there...
Hola So last year we started to dig planting holes where we dig the sides down deeper than the middle. It's hard to explain but essentially it is like the reverse of hilling up. If you imagine the hilled ground in reverse, this might help..it allows the roots to spread out and drive in to the un dig ground and we got faster rooting as a consequence. This was a technique we learned while studying Korean Natural Farming and you may find in on PureKNF to better follow. It's easy to show, harder to explain it is like digging a pyramid Also we have been using a JMS soil treatment, again loads of videos here and it's a peasant farmer method so low cost..it does however really seem to open the soil up. The other thing we have been doing is pre watering and then not using more water once we plant for up to 8days. This to help the roots establish quicker..when we watered plants in, we found the roots stayed more local for much longer periods and thus the plants where weaker and demanded more attention than those we didn't water in. Just something to try may be. Lovely to see you and watch your little bit of paradise develop
Hi, thank you for the ideas, KNF is super interesting and something I would love to learn more about. I'm not sure I can picture the planting hole where the sides are bigger, how it would look. So now I have something to research - thank you!
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead most commonly we.dig holes where the middle is the deeper part. In this method we dig say 12cm in the middle but we dig the sides to 24cm. its hard to describe, super easy to see as with most things farming. There is an episode of Office Hours.on PureKNF where Drake discusses it with pictures. I think it was 22nd October or there about..
I also like the LOOK of deep blue pots, BUT they get REALLY hot if in the sun on a warm day, with the result of cooking virtually any plant you try to grow in them !! My blue pots have had to retreat to the shade for this reason, so be warned thst even cacti don't survive a good cooking ! J
It is more work in the beginning, however it is supposed to be amazing to help trees grow. It would be worth trying it on a tree or two, I would think. Excellent suggestion.
Hi. Love the videos, big fan of both your commitment to your new lives. Sorry to sound like a dad, and in no way is this meant to be patronising or rude, The stove in the bell tent, you’ve stood it on a wooden pallet. Now I now the heat of the metal will be fine, just worried that when the door is opened for adding logs etc, that embers that drop out will land on a dry wooden surface or drop between the slats onto the carpet? We have ours standing on a paving stone. Again no intention to be rude or opinionated. Get well soon
Thank you, no I appreciate the comment, we wanted to put a slate or something in front of the stove, on the pallet, but I just didn't have time to sort it for the video!
Here in USA, you put a stove on bricks instead of wood, which prevents wood from getting hot. Also, shouldn't you have a back guard made of brick, so heat won't do damage to tent?
No offense, but I laughed out loud when I saw you "chimney top" 😄 I'm not a professional, but I was wondering if in case of a strong gust of wind, the top brick wouldn't fall ? Especially if the wind is in the same direction as the holes in the brick, will the bit of cement be enough ? It's a pleasure seeing you recovering. I send you a lot of strength for the arrival of November.
You definitely are a hard worker. Are you sure you won't have to sweep the flue pipe to the stove? We had to sweep ours once a year to remove the creosote build up. Always great to watch your videos. John in Oklahoma USA
I just wanted to let you know that the mullein you picked isn’t mullein. Mullein is a fuzzy leafed plant with a huge spike of yellow flowers that blooms that 2nd year. Just a fyi. I hope you are feeling better.
What a lovely video! I really liked the "chapter format" just got a bit alarmed when you were carrying the stove and climbing the roof! Will you be able to clean the chimney with the cover you built over it?
Ah the stove was actually quite light, unlike the big one in the house! Yes the stick thing that goes in the chimney has some flex so it can get past the topper. I took that into consideration in my beaitiful design 😂
I hope your roof repair works, it’s not nice having a leaky roof, I should know! I enjoy your TH-cam blog so much, it’s so relaxing, like nothing else matters, what a beautiful sanctuary you have. Don’t get fooled by your wellness, some of the things you are doing could sneak up and bite you because you over did, give your body a little more time please. Do you use your rocking chair like I suggested, it will help your abdominal muscles to strengthen and heal. Much love to all ❤🍂🎃🍂
I know how you feel about getting your body back after a surgery. I had two serious surgeries in 2020 and it was such a relief to be able to put my own clothes on or empty a bin without help. Is your little goat tattoo new? I don’t remember seeing that one before?

Loved this video
Fruit trees take long to establish and good to plant early on. Try a plant diaper to solve the watering issue
Central Arkansas USA. The trees seemed to be turning color a bit late.
Excelente trabajo!
I would love to have a teapot like yours. My son is really into tea, he buys blends not teabags!
wonderfull work ,wonderfull lífe congratulaciones!!!!sorry abaut me english
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love you guys.
Hola
So last year we started to dig planting holes where we dig the sides down deeper than the middle.
It's easy to show, harder to explain it is like digging a pyramid
Also we have been using a JMS soil treatment, again loads of videos here and it's a peasant farmer method so low cost..it does however really seem to open the soil up.
ohh I'll have to keep an eye on that! I am sure that didn't help my herbs this summer!
Ever heard of the Ellen White method of planting fruit trees? I've never used it myself, but it promises wonders...
It is more work in the beginning, however it is supposed to be amazing to help trees grow. It would be worth trying it on a tree or two, I would think. Excellent suggestion.
Alles Gute aus Österreich ❤️😍❤️😍
Also, shouldn't you have a back guard made of brick, so heat won't do damage to tent?
loved the style of your video
Greetings and love from Germany ¡¡¡
I must know about that little teapot you use!
Hahaha what would you like to know about it? 😆
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead where you got it is fine 😊😊😊
Love your videos
No offense, but I laughed out loud when I saw you "chimney top" 😄
I'm not a professional, but I was wondering if in case of a strong gust of wind, the top brick wouldn't fall ? Especially if the wind is in the same direction as the holes in the brick, will the bit of cement be enough ?
It's a pleasure seeing you recovering. I send you a lot of strength for the arrival of November.
Hahaha I wasn't even sure whether to include the chimney footage because I was so embarrassed 😂. But then I thought... oh well! No filters here 😂
Also weirdly warm here in N Germany.
Hi there, I also live in Spain, and i'd like to know where did you get the Bell tent , tanks so much in advance. Nice to see you're getting better 🙂
I bought it from an online shop called Vevor. Vevor.es
Hope that helps!
Peppermint is a good way to get rid of rats. Try peppermint oil.
A new video 🥳🤗
Can anyone recommend channels that are similar to this? This is one of my favourites but I'm all caught up for now
You definitely are a hard worker.
Are you sure you won't have to sweep the flue pipe to the stove?
We had to sweep ours once a year to remove the creosote build up.
Always great to watch your videos. John in Oklahoma USA
Yes we need to clean the flue pipe anually, but hopefully not the chimney if we can extend the length of the tube
If that makes sense??
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead yes it does. Thanks.
All the best.
I just wanted to let you know that the mullein you picked isn’t mullein. Mullein is a fuzzy leafed plant with a huge spike of yellow flowers that blooms that 2nd year. Just a fyi. I hope you are feeling better.
I believe it's a "scallop-leaved mullein" - Verbascum sinuatum. It can be used in the same way as the more common mullein you refer to!
It's not new, no! I haven't had a new tattoo in years. I wish!
