Great sample of life on your farm. Love the friends helping each other aspect a lot. LOVE your chickens’ freedom you allow them. They have a great life and you get their eggs. Perfect trade.
Have you read about crop rotation and intercropping? When bugs hatch if they have their preferred food they stay there and lay more eggs. Crop rotation stops that. There is a best way to rotate different plants. I’m sure you can find a book or the internet. Also, intercropping pairs different plants so that one they keep away bugs. I also used to plant marigolds around my garden. You only have to plant them once as they self sow. Marigolds keep away moths and other bugs. Nature can help you with this.
Thanks Linda, yes - crop rotation is currently being achieved by my complete lack of organization in the garden, meaning everything's a big mess and who knows what will be where next year? I don't, the bugs hopefully don't either 😂
Hello ☺️. To stop slugs and white butterfly etc. eating your plants, dry then crush eggshells. It cuts the snails/slugs underbelly and if just flattened and placed around plants the cabbage butterfly move on as apparently they are solitary feeders. I do this for my kale. I hope this helps 😃.

I love my olives in brine with thin oregano and slicesof lemon. I usually cut each olive two cuts with a knife for olives that to be used a long time later. Those to be used earlier, I hit each olive with small mallet, it allows them to get ready much faster. I learned that from mom, and it works so well. Also, I noticed your fruit trees etc need pruning. Once you give them all a healthy pruning, they will produce more fruit and be a lot healthier for the trees!
I love your garden and animal sheds. A lot of farmers in America are now using sand in the bottom of their chickens coop, they use a sifter to scoop up the poop and feathers into a bucket and when it’s full they take it to the compost pile for regeneration. They are reporting that it’s easy and is keeping the coop cleaner and it doesn’t smell, that’s a plus, the chickens can dust bath in it as well. Maybe try this method in an area and see how it goes. I love your chickens new door and your addition to the roosts for the chickens, great use of space. I love olives, I hope we can see how you will use them in recipes. Hi Harriet! Lovely film footage. In terms of organic pest control: Assuming that you heat at least partially with wood, sprinkle the ash around the plants most affected with slug/snails. The ash also adds potassium to your soil and makes it slightly alkaline. Ash needs to be stored in a dry place and renewed applications are necessary after a heavy rainfall. Setting out shallow containers of beer is another way to keep infestations down. The pests drown in alcohol----not the worst death imaginable!

Compost tea!. Don't use pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers or anything chemical. You have done the right thing with compost bins and a worm bin. Let your chickens loose too! Lol
Hi Harriet, there are a number of ways to tackle snails and slugs. Encourage lizards and frogs, coffee grounds or garlic is another. Maybe there is a Cafe nearby. Make a spray from the grounds and water the same with the garlic and spray around plants. I have had a little bit of luck with eggshells; however, they need to be ground fine and dry. Chives, sage, chamomile, yarrow and wormwood are also useful. however, my favourite as an Aussie is the beer trap. Slugs and snails love yeast so place a saucer level with the top of the soil and top with beer. Any snails you find alive throw them to the chooks it is hilarious. Found the vlog about 2 months ago and watched from the beginning. I have caught up now and wish you and Mauro all the best for the future.
Thank you so much, I've tried a few things you mention but not all of them! I imagine a multi-pronged approach is best - never dealt with slugs here before, so time to get serious and try some more techniques! 😆
The front of your large building looks like the Alamo in San Antonio Texas., Unique front facade in the. US., I noticed it a while ago., originally a Spanish mission. Saludos y salud
Hi, we also had the slug problem. Turned out they lay eggs in the straw we use for mulch (I see you're using it too, so perhaps that's the reason) They don't like dry straw, but after rain they make total invasion, eat what they can and reproduce. Damp soil under cover is perfect for that. I found many eggs when I turned the straw in the beds. For some reason they love straw. They also live under straw bales that serve as wind brakes at our farm. To kill the eggs you just let them dry in the sun. For us 2022 was particularly sluggy. We'll see how 2023 goes. For me the slug egg hunt is extremely time consuming so I'm working on some other solutions too, although gardeners from my area all say that hand picking slugs and eggs works best. This year we're getting Indian runner ducks as special anti-slug forces. We'll see... Best wishes from Poland!
If I'm not mistaken the plants with white little flowers at 5:47 are "Ravenisses blanques" (White wallrocket). This plant is edible and you gonna find a lot of them at this time of the year. You could eat the leaves, with a taste similar to cabbage but more spicy, or the flowers with a kind of mustard taste. I use it to make a vinaigrette: Put some flowers in a blender, a clove of garlic, soy sauce, olive oil and salt. There are a bunch of what people consider 'bad weeds with no value' in the Mediterranean region that are edible or useful for a bunch of purposes, like the "malva" (mallow), "l'ortiga" (nettle), "verdolaga" (purslane) or even the poppy petals ("rosella").
Thank you Gerard! Since all the plants here (or most of them) are new to me, I have had a lot of fun discovering what they might be, and I don't associate them as "weeds" because most of them are not the weeds I grew up knowing! I must try your vinegarette, it sounds delicious!
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead The flowers are also used in some high level restaurants to garnish the dishes. Thanks and keep the good work making this entertaining, calm and beautiful videos.
I had lots of olives and I tried different methods... the easiest is cut the olives and place them in an old pillow case with salt and hung in a dark place.. easy.
At 14:45 you mention the need for a press that works with organic olives. I have a friend who cares for regenerative olives in Cervera and he brings his olives to a press that accepts non- certified organic at the end of pressing a certified batch. The press is in Varona la Vella near Sant Mateu.
This year is very bad for me too with slugs and snails (Andalucia). Soo much effort and work waste😞. Regarding the olive oil press… 500kg batch is the common amount, as irs the minimum what a press needs to work properly, if you put less, it would be generating a lot of waste. I love to see your videos to relax and compare with what I’m doing on my plot 😘
Have you tried scissors cutting the flight feathers on one side ONLY. It makes them off balanced. I’m kinda new to your channel, so I don’t know if you know this. I am really enjoying your channel.
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead of course. its realy easy to understand: the festiy chicken have much more muscle mass and so make a better chicken soup or whatever. But fun aside, my mother had chickens since 1986 and she loves them dearly, but if a rooster mistreats the chickens or is trying to get away to much or eats her strawberrys she gets very murdery very fast. also cutting the long feathers on the tip of the wings can help make them less of a flyer and more of a ground chicken.
That never occurred to me, but I think if the fruit is infected it rots, apparently that's a symptom. So hopefully since I was only picking the perfect fruits, it's fine. Would love if someone who knows more than me can add any info!
In general, without knowing about this olive disease specifically: if a plant has a bacterial infection and that has also infected edible plant parts, that by itself does not make these plant parts dangerous to eat. Plants and animals / humans are just so different that a bacterium that can infect plants cannot infect humans. Had to look this up before deciding to eat basil that had a slight bacterial leaf spot disease. Of course, edible parts could still taste bad or be rotten as a secondary effect of the plant's bacterial infection, in which case I'd suggest not eating those parts
Your rooster is telling you that he needs a bath, it’s a “flat bucket”, (I don’t know how to say it in English) filled with diatomaceous earth, and if you snails are too many, you could put some old beer in a dish and cover it with a roof tile, and that night will be the last party for some of them. It’s sad but…

Saludos!!

Is there a reason you don't want the rooster to be free? Couldn't you just open the gate and let the chickens out as well? They can manage well, I think, and will go back to the chickenrun at night.
Yeah I do let them free when I'm around but I don't want them out when I'm not there, when I'm gonna be popping out etc. For predators, and also to keep them out of the garden which is unfenced!

Lu sheep’s wool clippings around you plants.
I planted 5 tomato plants one summer and soon green horn headed things showed up on the plants. Maybe after thousands of years of cultivation the things dna is natural to the plant,.
lovely video, thank you
Hi, we also had the slug problem.
Malva is a great medicinal herb to battle lung problems, especially dry cough :)
I had lots of olives and I tried different methods... the easiest is cut the olives and place them in an old pillow case with salt and hung in a dark place.. easy.
Old pillow case is a great idea!
I love to see your videos to relax and compare with what I’m doing on my plot 😘
hang a long rope from tree with hook for food and water for chicks?
Have you noticed the egg yolks a more vibrant darker color with the free ranging?
Yes! And so much tastier. I don't even put salt on my eggs anymore. And for some reason we get a lot of double yolks.
@@MauroGestoso Bravo, delicious eggs!
I like your cats’ names! Just need a Pendragon and your Arthurian animal contingency is complete, lol.
Have you tried scissors cutting the flight feathers on one side ONLY. It makes them off balanced. I’m kinda new to your channel, so I don’t know if you know this. I am really enjoying your channel.
The herb at 23:41 seems to be Tanacetum parthenium, which helps against headaches, correct?
feisty roosters make the best soups btw.
Haha is that a scientific fact?? 😂
😍

Your night lighting reminds me of the movie: The Blair Witch Project. Scary!
😂😂 Feel like I should have done something more halloween-y with the nighttime shots, given the time of year!
Maybe ask your neighbors about what is happening with your tree. It doesn’t look like cankers. Did you sterilize the saw between cuts?
🌼🌻🌼
Are you going to try cuttings from the olive tree?
Maybe, but I would be a bit worried about spreading the disease...
How high are your nesting boxes from the ground.
About 50cm from the floor of the coop
i've always wondered if a plant/tree is infected are the fruits still good to eat I've never eaten just incase but now im second guessing myself
@@djazt.8053 ah thank you for that does make sense!
how much land do you have? I like the field. and your videos😃😃😃
I think they said about 15.000 m2 (meters) 1.5 hectareas
Yes, 1.6 hectares (4 acres)
Your rooster is telling you that he needs a bath, it’s a “flat bucket”, (I don’t know how to say it in English) filled with diatomaceous earth, and if you snails are too many, you could put some old beer in a dish and cover it with a roof tile, and that night will be the last party for some of them. It’s sad but…
Flea beetles?
Saludos!!
Clip his flight feathers.
🌟👏👍🍀💐
Does the rooster still get out
Nope! Only when I let him out 👍
@@LittleSpanishFarmstead great job from someone who has been on the path less travel for over fifty years, you 2 + critters are definitely on to a life better lived. Create value, be honest and have fun ! The simple joy of living life to it’s fullest.
Food Grade--. Diatomaceous Earth will kill snails and slugs. And take care of mites or fleas ticks anything like that. And can be used to worm farm animals. It's a powder and fairly inexpensive. Do not put on compost pile.
you could clip the rooster's wings
