- I love Christmas and I'm big into Irish Christmas Traditions. When I spend the season away from Ireland there are definitely certain traditions that I miss and I thought I'd share those things. Some you might know, some you might not :)

Christmas Traditions in Ireland
www. wolfemommablog
The traditions include:
Christmas Day Swim
12 Pubs of Christmas
Nollaig na mban
Late Late Toy Show
Christmas FM
Christmas Eve busking
and more
My family still does Women's Christmas. It has been passed down generation after generation and yes I'm from America and it will continue in my family whenever I have kids they will be taught this old Irish tradition
I'm so proud of you teaching your kids Irish traditions. That is awesome 😎
Sounds like very new traditions
The 12 pubs is a recent invention. I don’t think it existed when I was growing up in Ireland. I fondly remember all the other traditions though. Some other traditions that my family had were: making the Christmas cake and pudding at least a month before Christmas, feeding them with whiskey, and putting marzipan and royal icing on the cake. Visiting the best cribs in local churches. Putting out our own ceramic crib at home, complete with the broken cow. Lighting a candle in the window to guide and welcome strangers. And of course the Wren Boys on St. Stephen’s morning, waking everybody up and making noise till they received money. When I look back at it, Christmas was a lot of work, especially for my Mum. My Dad worked for the Department of Posts and Telegraphs and in the 50s and 60s they delivered right up to Christmas morning. He would arrive home exhausted, eat Christmas dinner, and sleep for 24 hours!
Yeah. About 15 years ago I went out on the Sunday before Christmas. We went to 11 pubs (more than one or two drinks in some pubs). There was no mention of the 12 pubs. It wasn’t a thing. If it was we would’ve went to another one to finish it.
It was at least 5-6 years later before it was a thing and got called a “tradition” after 3-4 years.
Ironically there’s far less drinking in general around Christmas than there was back then 🤷🏻♂️
You are a sweetheart!! Thank you for your fun and informative post!!!!🙂☘️🇨🇮
I really miss Ireland. This video just showed me how much I love this country and its culture...
Nicola Johanna umm I live in ireland weather sucks storms here all the time
My church here in the U.S. does a candlelight service on Christmas Eve. It used to be at 11 but now it is earlier as well. The best part of the mass though is when they turn off all of the lights. Everyone gets a candle and we sing Silent Night. It's so beautiful.
💖love the women's little Christmas. I would love for that to become a thing here in the states. What a nice way to respect the women in your family.
Sounds like a nice tradition
@@mariaacosta2146 yep it is a nice tradition
@Maria It is a thing. It is a tradition passed down in my family
I am from there. The tradition I remember the most is the chucking of the cap/cork from the whiskey bottle into the trash...the drinking stopped when the bottle was empty, and not a drop before.
In Canada, we call it the Polar bear swim when people run into the Ocean in winter!!♥️
And it seems to be most popular on New Years Day.
I thout it was polar bear dip
In America (if maybe it’s just where i live) we have something called the turkey plunge when people run into the ocean a day before thanksgiving
Maddy M we do? I’m in Laguna, CA and I’ve not heard of that one.
Same in the Northeast in US. Polar bear swim :)
my only experience of Irish Xmas, is that my sisters Irish Mother-inlaw could cook the world ( including wars ) to a stand still with Xmas lunch. Got so sun-burned because I was soooo satisfied, that I flaked out in the yard on the cloudless summer day. Legendary cooks - and don't forget the whiskey.
You missed "The Wren, The Wren!"! On St.Stephen's Day,the day after Christmas Day, the kids go round the houses and sing "The Wren, the Wren, the King of the Birds" and get given sweets or money or taytos! It's also a tradition to go out on Stephen's night to the pub!
P.S. We're a Quality Street house,yum,yum,we love 'em,lol!
Nice video. Can't stop watching her. Merry Christmas and I wish to do 12 pubs at least once in my life. Can't leave the first one.
I would love to see ireland someday
I learned about Christmas Crackers from reading the Harry Potter books. This year, I am making some for my family here in the U.S. And I also have an all-Christmas radio station in my area. They have been playing only Christmas songs since our American Thanksgiving started.
Here in British Columbia,Canada We call it The Polar Dip, which happens every New Years Day 💙🌊I went in once or twice in Okanogan lake when I was younger, but now too cold for Me!
I like the 12 pubs in Christmas ;). Thanks for the videos. Live in Ireland for 6 years now and I learned a lot from your videos.
Nailed it! I've been 14 years in Ireland and I would not go without my Roses..hhahha!
Greetings from Dublin, Ireland. I am new to this channel and I love all videos. I am not Irish and almost every year I fly to the country that I'm from so I was wondering if I know any Irish Christmas Traditions. It turned out I only haven't heard of Christmas panto. There is a midnight mass at midnight (00:00 AM) in all churches in the country that I am from as well. In the middle of this video I knew I had to write a comment about Christmas.FM and next thing that I heard was about this station :) I love it with all my heart, this is the most important tradition for me for 3 reasons: 1. beautiful Christmas songs that lift your spirit; 2. fund collection for a charity (different charity each year) - they tell stories that melt my heart and make me cry with joy; 3. all radio presenters in this station are volunteers - they devote their private time and work for Christmas.FM - some of them for 20 years! I am truly blessed and grateful that I can live in such a beautiful country where most people are nice, generous and with big hearts.
Similar to your Ladies Little Christmas is my church's tradition of a Ladies' Christmas Breakfast. Every December, about fifteen women host and decorate tables, often with plates and glasses that had been in the family for generations, and invite other ladies (friends, family, neighbors, etc) to come to the event and join them at their tables. The men of the church serve the ladies hot drinks and breakfast casseroles, all nicely dressed and mannered. Sometimes young boys will help too. There's also a message from a guest speaker and a musical number or two from other church members. It's an opportunity for women to get connected, feel fancy and honored, and have simple fun and spiritual nourishment. I've always loved going and would enjoy continuing this tradition. 😊
Thank you for doing these videos. I wish my mom was still alive so I could have talked to her about some of these traditions. My mom was born in the United States outside of Boston. I remember that all the Christmas stuff stayed up until the 6th of January.
One tradition that I don't want to tell anyone about is the 12 pubs of Christmas. I live in Wisconsin in the States. We have one of the highest ratios of pubs, or taverns as we call them, per capita in the United States. Nobody would be able to celebrate Christmas. As for the Christmas Swim, we do our version on New Years Day and it is called the Polar Bear Plunge. Of course around here, the temperature can be anywhere between 40°F to 20°F below zero. The waters if they aren't frozen over are usually close to freezing.
Thank you again for all the great information. We are going to try and listen to the Christmas FM to hear your songs.
Here in the states the Christmas season starts the 4th Thursday in November officially. The stores usually start about the same time kids are getting ready to go back to school at the end of August which most people hate. The radio stations will sometimes start playing Christmas Carol's as early as Halloween and begin as late as the the 4th Thursday of November, our Thanksgiving.
My Grandfather was born in Ireland, and our last name then was O"Riordan or Riordan. There is still some debate over it. It ended up as Reardon here.
We also have certain.TV shows or movies that people have to watch every year for it to be Christmas. Some of the TV shows are Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and How the Gringch Stole Christmas. Some movies are the classic "It's a Wonderful Life", A Charles Dickens "A Christmaas Carol", my personal favorites are the 1951 version with Alistair Sim, the One with George C. Scott from 1973 (I think), the one with Patrick Stewart. Of course there is always "Scrooged" with Bill Murray. And if you are looking for one for your kids, there is "The Muppets Christmas Carol".
I could go on and on, so I will end this here. My wife and I have just started watching your videos, but we will watch back vids and are subscribed to see all your future videos..

If you ever have any questions about traditions or anything else about life in the States, please feel at ease to call. I know you have 2 little ones, and so do I. My little one will be 30 in a month, and my older one will be 32 in July. Merry Christmas.
I probably should have given you my email. It is danbrawn27@gmail.com. No country codes or phone charges.
Such a nice comment ❤️
I agree, such a lovely comment.
Don’t forget Home Alone for the kids. A classic!
@@bronny172I also didnt mention one of my all time favorites. It is called "Fitzwilly" starring Dick Van Dyke and Barbara Feldon from the 60's.
Thank you so much for such a nice comment! I'll definitely check out those movies and I'm sure my kids would love The Muppets Christmas Carol! I have a friend whose last name is Riordan :) Merry Christmas! 💗
I lived in Ireland for two years and went through Christmas obviously twice. My family is from Ireland. I love this country. By the way you are beautiful
I love the toy show idea. It reminds me of the 80’s. It made it easy to know what to get 💗 Like a old Sear catalogue in Canada 🇨🇦
Love this!! Used to live in Mayo and this brings back so many memories 😭 xx
Anabel F #Dublin lads
My family is originally from Ireland and over the years things get lost or you don't always get the "why" behind why you do what you do...so many of these things my family does and I didn't realize the rooting in Ireland...which I should have because nearly everything we do is because it is rooted in Ireland! Thank you for this video!
Very nice video! Love all the traditions ❤
In The Netherlands we have a Nieuwjaarsduik, a swim on the 1st on January.
Ooo I like this 12 pubs situation. I'd have to go somewhere other than where I live for that though.
I’ve only had one Christmas in Ireland, and that was 25years ago, but I remember some of these traditions. It was lovely to share them with you. Merry Christmas 💜🌲💜🌲💜
One of the radio stations in Houston plays holiday music from Thanksgiving through New years
I brought Christmas crackers from Dublin 🇮🇪 to Guadalajara 🇲🇽 one Christmas. So it’s definitely possible. As long as you put them in your checked luggage.
In Newfoundland (Canada) we have the old tradition of Mummering, when groups of people disguise themselves in all sorts of costumes and go about their community knocking on doors, hoping to be allowed entry. Once inside, there's music, food, dancing, and of course drinking. In rural communities this goes no every night from Dec. 26 to January 6. The custom actually came here with our English and Irish ancestors hundreds of years ago.
I enjoyed this podcast but was surprised you did not mention lighting the Christmas Candle. This has been our tradition in our family forever.
Here in San Antonio, Texas, we have a station that plays Christmas music 24/7 throughout the month of December (101.9).
These traditions are so cool! Thanks for sharing!!
Try also iHeartRadio North Pole !
Are country is pretty depressing but thanks 😊
Thanks for Christmas FM from Dublin
I love seeing your videos about Irish traditions and names! My family has been in America for a few hundred years but after doing our ancestry we found out we are a majority Irish! I have been trying to get more in touch with my Irish roots and your videos are amazing!!!
Many thanks and Merry Christmas!
IM SO SORRY BUT STAY IN AMERICA YOULL LIVE BETTER WE HAVE DE WORST WEATHER EVER WERE KINDA PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE DONT GO TO DUBLLIN UNLESS YOU WANT TO DIE IM NOT LYING DUBLIN ITS SO DANGEROUS
Seem like Irish is very very nice and friendly 😀
Actually, the 6th is the Twelfth Day of Christmas, also known as, "Little Christmas." The understanding is that this is when the wise men came. My parents grandparents were all from Ireland, and my mother's maternal grandmother lived with them for my mother's entire upbringing. There were a lot of traditions and just ways to do things that I know were from her grandmother, but they were such a part of life, that she and we didn't think about it. We always put our tree up on Christmas Eve. When the first few children were little, they went to bed on Christmas Eve with a "Naked" tree. When they got up in the morning, it was magical. Not only did Santa bring gifts, he decorated the tree, too. By the time I came (I was the eighth born in 13 years. I also happened to be the last!) it was too much to try to do. Then, we decorated the tree and were allowed to open one gift that was under the tree. We also didn't put up the Creche scene until Christmas Eve. We took the tree down the day of or the day after "Little Christmas." I do know that, at least here in the southern USA, people put their tree up the day after our Thanksgiving, which is always on the fourth Thursday of November. My husband and I had a bit of a "to-do" about this. I won. Christmas Eve to Little Christmas, it is. My parents were reared in the northern USA, and traditions are very different in all parts of the country.
I'm watching in 2020 as part of a virtual Christmas Holiday.
Go raibh maith agat!
I have some Irish ancestry, quite a bit actually and lately I’ve enjoyed TH-cam putting some Irish videos in my feed, including this one.
Last I saw this adorable little girl of six years old arguing with her mother about not being allowed to go the the pub-adorable!
I noticed with both of you that your accents are sounding American done and Irish some. That happened with our Southern US accents by media.
I love the late late toy show
Ah man , as someone who doesn’t drink at all I would probably never last in Ireland. I do love Ireland though ♥️
I'm from Northern Ireland and in my house we have both roses and quality street.
I will definitely be doing all of these this year
My son fell asleep during the news before the late late 🙈 😊 he was devastated in the morning ... yay for rte player 🎉
Yeah this year there was no way my kids could stay up that late so we watched it the next night through rte player too :) We still made it "late", but 6pm late instead of 9:30pm late :)
Just want to say thank you so much, your information helps me a lot, greeting from China
💚🇮🇪pretty accurate 😂 midnight mass is the nicest bcos you can be sure to hear the christmas carol singers before mass starts.. so lovely... 😘 I'm a rose girl too - my fave is the purple wrapper but you might find the odd box of celebrations too, for the visitor's (we don't like to see very often 🤣) merry christmas 😘😘
@@Michael-bf1dt so far so good. Just received a 2nd vaccine dose today. The side effects are not nice but hopefully they'll go soon. This video is my fave. Hope you are safe and well too 🙌
@@Michael-bf1dt oh it's good to hear I'm not the only one resting after it. I'm not in Dublin I'm down the country 😂 good night and god bless 💚☘️
In my town we don’t do a Christmas
Day swim we do a New Year’s Day swim I did it last year 😂 so cold
I loved hearing these and relating to a lot of them. Newfoundland has its own traditions over most of Canada and North America. It’s easy to see the Irish influences here 🥰
Many such as Mumming are actually English in origin.
I just have “one wish”...my wished to be with my family during Christmas time ☺️ but sad to say that I am millions miles away since I am working abroad☹️☹️MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!😘
Actually, there’s no 'little' in nollaig na mban but I get what you’re saying. I’m in my 50s now but in my youth we did nollaig na mban every year as a feminist thing. I miss midnight mass at midnight. It was great as a kid to stay up that late. You always felt Christmas Day was that much closer ! You’re bringing back a lot of memories here (I’m in Canada) ❤️🎂 Christmas cake ! Nobody else does that either. The fruit cake with the hard icing ! You can’t get that anywhere other than Ireland ! I miss that too
I love Christmas Eve Midnight Mass!!!! One of my favorites. I'm one who goes every Sunday. Those who go only on Christmas Eve and Easter are referred to as "C&E Catholics"
We call them “Creasters”
In Texas we call them Santa Bunnies
We have the Polar Plunge in the Winter here in the United States. It varies from place to place, but it's usually associated with some sort of local charity or fundraiser that's raising money for a particular cause. Catholics here also have Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve
How fun! I just sent my fiance a screenshot of Women's Little Christmas and told him to look it up! I'm hoping he'll want to implement this in Canada. Fingers crossed :D
I'm so happy I found your channel!
You could make Women's Little Christmas your own tradition! We don't really celebrate it where I live anymore but I'd love to re-start it. Might try it out this Christmas :)
Some people in Canada do celebrate little Christmas. I got it from my moms side of the family. My siblings do not celebrate it and where my partner & I share the house hold choirs I do not need a day off or it wouldn't be fair to him so I celebrate it differently now where I keep the tree up until after the 6th(take down on the 7th) & the kids get a full uninterrupted day of pure family time. A win for both my self & partner & kids.
@@lanamackenzie1164 Ohh, that is so nice. Thank you so much for sharing! Love that. Thanks, Lana. :)
I would love to try those sweets the " Quality street 'and the other' We love McVeeties Digestives biscuits , jam tarts, and Bakewell tarts. I would love to try treacle tarts too. Home cooked cookies too. I like marzipan , Linzertort and any European treat. French pastries. My husband is blind and he loves UK sweets better than US sweets. I love cream tarts, cream puffs, eclairs, and Hostess, European out do Hostess. I am sight impaired too. Happy Christmas, I has Christmas candlelight service and advent wreaths.I had hot wine in Germany, Fausching in January, I forget the saying. It is like Americans " trick or treat.Which I did for Unicef to get pennies.Boxing day and the women's day sound great to me. America should adopt the concept .Women would be respected better. Happy New Year 2020! I hope it is a better one .
And after that the corona virus
I listened Christmas FM thanks to you, this is so cool :) !
Great! Where did you listen from? 😀
@@WolfeMomma Nice, France :) :)
My sis made Christmas crackers a few years ago. She put handmade clips in them.
Quality Street!! Every time. :D
As an Irish-American we would have all of my aunts, uncles, and cousins over on Christmas Eve and there was a lot of food and a lot of drinking. As the night would wear on people started to get loud from the drinking and eventually the neighbors would tell us to keep it down which was the wrong thing to do. My uncles and cousins would start shouting back and the neighbors would end up calling the cops. So it was never truly Christmas until we would see the flashing lights and hear the sirens of the cop cars. SLAINTE!
Growing up a pagan on one of Ireland’s outer island I never did any of this. Wish I had though.
it is NEVERT to late to start some of the traditions !
I'm a pagan and observe the yuletide festival they are just as nostalgic and have a deeper truer meaning than the Roman Propaganda make believe...
@@janelloyd4332 I don't think it is nice to claim that only your beliefs are valid, especially when no one asked for them.
@@su-rv2uq Christmas, Easter, Halloween are all Pagan festivals of the Tuatha De Danann, the "Christmas Tree" that`s a Pagan tradition that goes back way before the Celts arrived in Ireland, the Celts arrived in Ireland around 500BC these traditions have been in place at least 1500 years prior to that, so you can be as passive aggressive as you like because @Jane Lloyd is correct in what she said
Interesting! 😊
If you ever crime to the states a store called World Market sells traditional Christmas crackers. I bought some for my kids this year who had never tried them.
It would be kind of fun if you did a video on words in Ireland compared to America. Like my ex husband is from Dublin and we would go at Christmas time and I noticed so many differences. Also, I noticed them in the movie The Commitments. Like, a crib is a cot, a slide is a hair clip, a ladder is a run in your tights, a nappy is a diaper, the boot is a car trunk, the bonnet is under the car hood, the chemist is the pharmacist …… know what I mean?
Most of these same traditions are also here in Newfoundland
ramona sturge so right! I miss home most at Christmas... but it’s not the same these days unless you are around the bay
Which is why The Rock is still a primitive place after centuries of European settlement.
I Live in a tiny catholic village in England. Our midnight mass starts at 11:45pm and ends 12:45am
There was an “issue”, shall we say, with people showing up drunk and making noise etc. So they moved it to 11. Then 10. Then 9. Personally I only turned up drunk that one time........
Sometimes the stereotypes are bang on tbh 😐
Im a Dub nd weve never gone for a swim on christmas
Rachel Mcguirk ik same btw I’m from Dublin to 😂
Love your videos! 💖
Thank you! 💗
I thought it was 1 pub in each night for 12 days. 12 Pubs in one night sounds like a mess. I know I would be destroyed.
This was so interesting and fun!
Of course, living beyond the Pale I didn't realise pubs open in Ireland on Christmas Day.
All I can say God help the children whose parents celebrate Christmas this way.
Is it any wonder that there was a big increase in calls to Childline on Christmas day.
Im officially bring back women's little Christmas. The whole of the world, instead of one day its 3 days. 2 days on it and 1 day of recovery. 😁Its official! 💚
I am surprised that sharks do not show up for the swim! Lol
Shala Carter we only have basket sharks do ur info they’re rare
Proud to be Irish.
Thanks for the help I have an essay due in a couple days
Tate Donovan a lot of these traditions are dead
In 1967, I went to Cinderella starring Cliff Richard in London.
Oh that sounds so lovely! I definitely should spend christmas in Ireland one day 😊 on which day would you go for the 12 pubs of christmas? On the 24th? Or no particular day? Greetings from Germany!
Anytime in December, but usually within the 2 weeks before xmas day.
No Nono you wouldn’t it rains winter is spring spring is winter so
