Over the years, I've come to the conclusion that most long-running franchises NEED a major reboot or "crisis event" or soforth every now and then, to clear out the lore clutter. It's like how occasional forest fires stop a forest from choking out by clearing biological clutter. Too much continuity can start choking out a franchise as well. Plus, a well-executed lore reboot can keep the 'good stuff' and jettison everything that's awkward, bad, or outdated. Like how after Disney rebooted the Star Wars EU, Thrawn was almost immediately recanonized because he HAD to come back. On the other hand, remember that time Luke fell in love with a Force ghost? I'm pretty sure the name "Callista Ming" will never be uttered again, and that's just fine.
Honestly, it's really ironic that the whole idea of Superman being a younger and more idealistic newcomer kind of indirectly started in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", where he was explicitly going up against an older, jaded and cynical Batman who had already been fighting crime for at least a decade before Superman came along. It's just that "BvS" didn't really *do* anything with that idea, and the filmmakers (probably) just made Batman an older guy to pander to fans of "The Dark Knight Returns". As a lot of people have pointed out: "BvS" could have been a really compelling reinterpretation of the characters if the story had fully explored the implications of Superman being the first of a new breed of superheroes who threatened the global status quo (in the best possible way) going up against "the old guard". And it looks like James Gunn's "Superman" might be doing just that.

After watching episode 3 of Creature Commandos (spoiler alert I guess), one of the things that stuck out to me was how the show skirts by and then subverts the tropes that we hate so much... for example, in so many other shows in the Scene where GI Robot guns down the Nazi's at the ambush in WW2, most shows would have had the team terrified of his power and even further alienate him and distance themselves even more, but here they embrace him as one of their own and fricken love the guy. I was so damned happy when they went that direction with the scene because not only does it make more sense, but it also makes what happens later even more tragic and effective.
Sorry, but when had that scenario you've played out ever happened? Like, which film or TV show did this? Marvel Caption America slaughtered nazi and his Howling Commandos were right by his side happy to have him. DC's Watchmen had Dr Manhattan slaughtering nazi and they were happy to have him. DC has Wonder Woman slaughtering Germans and everyone cheered. So I don't get what revisionist history of cinema you are referring to
Exactly. He took out the people who were trying to kill them. They reacted how I think I would in that situation. He kept his buddies alive in a war zone.
Color me intrigued. But Bob, aren't you worried that the Superman film will just portray him as reminding the world that it's inherently good, thus undercutting the cynicism inherent in the DCEU so far? Basically a repeat of the Christopher Reeves 1970s Superman?
Nice one...for that hopeful message to sink in will require finesse and a clear-eyed view of the world that allows for such hope to not look stupid. I am frankly uncertain Gunn can pull that off.

Continuity should never be the main course of a story or franchise. It should be the seasoning, a little extra flavour that can make good stories great, acceptable stories good and lesser stories acceptable. There will always be mistakes made in writing, no organization or person is perfect. And by keeping continuity as something extra, you can focus on making that writing the best that you can.

Well, I personally would love to be able to expedite origin stories, I still do enjoy them however, I do worry. The general audience needs a definitive starting point. An origin stories are a good way to do that.
So like… he’s going to be a Blue / Hope Lantern, right? That’s Superman’s whole deal to the world he’s in. He’s really just that good, that he gets people who were littering to clean up their broken city. Even if there isn’t enough time to save every star fish on the beach, you can make a difference for a few, and that honest care makes people change and gives hope where it was lost.
Hey Bob, I doubt it means much in the grand picture, but I saw something that made me think of your videos. At my local WHSmiths, they had a section as Toy R Us. I don't know if this is a revival, a collaboration, or just some targeted nostalgia, but for however long, some of it is back.
League of EXTRAORDINARY Gentlemen, FYI. League Of Gentlemen was actually a 1960s heist film Moore pulled that from. And sadly, he ran that concept into the ground, making it devolve into one long game of "I understood that reference".
Stating super heroes as "militarized police figures" is what they did in The Winter Soldier, because that was the case there, until Captain America came back from the '40s, step in, and said "this is wrong", which was the perfect way to modernize that character, and it is the perfect way to modernize Superman, he is the best of them, and he is the one who can show them there is another way, there is a better way. It also serves in a great meta way in 2025, people are so fucking done with super heroes in movies, that seeing something different on the big screen might awake their interest in them again, just like in the story people might start seeing metahumas in a inspiring way agan.
One thing I've been waiting for and hoping when it comes to the MCU is them just getting over the 'origin story' aspect. I'd really love for future movies like Blade (should they ever get around to making it) should just skip the origin enough people have seen the Wesley Snipes version and all you really need to do is drop a quick 20sec exposition if you feel like you really need to explain it. Even the Fantastic Four I'm hoping really doesn't spend much time on it's origin, though I'm afraid half the movie will be devoted to it. That James Gunn might be skipping that with his new DCU is exciting.
I'm not gonna say I'm bitter, but I am unhappy over where my life, the world, my country, and a lot of other things are going. I feel like I need a big win.
I get that. But I keep getting ugly vibes off all this DC stuff, like a sea of battery acid that corrodes everything. Last time I got something like this was when I saw the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 (and we all know how THAT turned out). I truly hope I'm wrong.
I know nothing about Creature Commandos, so whenever he says it I just hear the Cheat Commandos theme from Homestar Runner in my head. "Buy all our playsets and toys!"
The moment they revealed that the Justice League would essentially be corporate stooges owned by a megacorporation I was really excited. Distinguishing yourself as apart from the DCEU is easy, but distinguishing yourself from Marvel is less so. Skewering them as just "colorful and for kids" never rang true to me, so getting at their aggressively status quo ideology is much more engaging.
Joke Comment: Your hit/miss ratio is decent, but it's not Steph Sterling levels of prediction. (Better than Todd-stradamus, but he self-admits to being bad at prediction and has made it an in-joke)
There is a line. If you have a favorite artist, writer or musician and you think they are the best at what they do or you would take in anything they do, that is one thing. If you pay attention to their personal lives, if you think they are this great person, you try to be like them, you seek them out and try to meet, them, that is too much. They are just people but if they are great at what they do, there is nothing wrong with saying that.
11:28 And that's right. I laughed my ass off at the Weasel drowning to death a minute after his introduction, after we've been told he can't swim. But when is Creature Commandos set relative to The Suicide Squad? 12:00 He's on a boat! He's on a boat! Everybody, look at him, 'cause he's sailin' on a boat! 15:08 When you put it that way, you make James Gunn's Superman sound like how you described Captain America in "Winter Soldier": the one unashamedly GOOD guy throwing a monkey wrench in the works of corruption and cynicism, or like a reverse-virus.
Who Cares, Because Nobody saw Creature Commandos Series Bullshit, Stick with Twilight of The Gods Series Instead, Gunn Lover Hack!!! #FireJamesGunn #BoycottWBD #BoycottDCstudios #RestoreTheSnyderverse
From your analysis it sounds like the MCU went the way of DC comics and DCEU is going the way of marvel comics. That is DC comics were "Gods trying to be people" and always were more status quo enforcing while Marvel was "People trying to live up to gods" and were often more messy and human. Marvel went full Vought and DC (Under JG) is going to refute that.
Im looking forward to part 2. One of my criticisms of the MCU and influenced media is the paramilitary presentation of the heroes. Thats part of the reason I was forgiving of the Snyderverse because of how aesthetically different it was even if it was as shallow as just "less piping and pouches, more sculpted muscles" Ive been less enthused with James Gunn because it was feeling like he was bringing in that style and homogenizing things to confrom. But if thats all set up for a rebuke of that status quo? Alright you have my attention.
If this essay is going where I think its going, Ross and Waid's DC epic, then I guess I hope it doesnt literally adapt that story as much as spiritually adapting it. Gunn would have a lot more leg room than needing to figure how to get Shazam and Superman on opposite sides or making Supes+Wonder work, yet also take the bold swings evocative of that story, like a great tragedy Supes was unable to prevent and occurred recklessly, blaming himself and needing to rally himself up to recommit to being a hero.
I love that Gunn's approach is taking its time with these projects. This is a welcome change compared to Marvel Studio's "get this out on time before it has a chance to pull its socks up." I love the MCU. There have been some great projects during phases 4 & 5. But Disney's rush to make their own Netflix with blackjack and hookers has made the MCU feel muddled. Too many corners have been cut for the sake of telling a damn good story. DC Studios has this Hawaiian-time feel to it. We'll get there when we get there.
I'm looking forward to the new Superman movie, but on Social Media I try to filter out James Gun as much as I can. Interested in Super and the Terrifics though
I would love to see the turn be that all the "current" superhero grounds and people adopted the militaristic approach because they were either forced to so their work was legal. Or because they are mortal men and women with limited powers and abilities and subject to being ended by stray fire. The Superman shows up and can just deal with situations with ease to the point it boring for him. That then gives him the time to step back and go, ok something is systematically wrong here and we need to address the root cause, not just jail the idiots with guns.
@@jordanloux3883 Less bad and more concerning is what I'd call it. When it comes his storytelling, Gunn has serious limitations and gaps. The Suicide Squad, for instance, feels like it has mostly blank space instead of a second act. So far, these shortcomings hasn't mattered all that much for Gunn. But unless he REALLY pulls this off, it will sooner or later.

Not that I haven't heard something of the same but would you mind expanding on that comment a bit? FYI, I'm with you in that it's a BS argument. IMO, MCU is really about the decline and fall of American hegemony.

3 of my favorites. Up there with Warlord and Unknown Solider.
“Taking it one step at a time” is extremely refreshing if it turns out to be true
“Things count until they don’t, and everyone just get over it” is the tokusatsu way to handle continuity :p Continuity only has value if its in service to a good story! Continuity is not a goal in itself, it's just gotta be fun!
Amen to that.
Looking forward to part 2, Bob.

At least now DC has its own studio, so that should mean that the buck will typically stop at Gunn and Safran like with Feige at Marvel.
Besides, the merger’s given Zaslav a busy enough workload without having to manage the DC side.
So glad to have quality Movie Bob material! The world is poorer without your contributions.

Thanks Bob! I didn't know about Creature Commandos. I'm more of a Marvel guy although I've watched and enjoyed Gunn's Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. DCEU is going in an interesting direction and incidentally the actors from the previous iteration are free now to join MCU as a Squadron Supreme ;)
Affleck was meh as Batman, Cavill has his WH40k in the works, Gadot is Evil Queen and Miller is horrible human being so... no 😊
@sathrielsatanson666 I just thought it would be funny :) Even as a cameos. I like Cavil and Gadot, I don't care about the others.

It would be awesome if I could watch this in Canada on Max or HBO, like I could every other DC title. But no, I need a fncking cable plan to watch this is Canada. Great start, Gunn.

....ok🤷♂️?
After watching episode 3 of Creature Commandos (spoiler alert I guess), one of the things that stuck out to me was how the show skirts by and then subverts the tropes that we hate so much... for example, in so many other shows in the Scene where GI Robot guns down the Nazi's at the ambush in WW2, most shows would have had the team terrified of his power and even further alienate him and distance themselves even more, but here they embrace him as one of their own and fricken love the guy. I was so damned happy when they went that direction with the scene because not only does it make more sense, but it also makes what happens later even more tragic and effective.
He kills Nazis. Until the last decade, it was hard to hate anyone who lived by that code.
So... the premise of "Kingdom Come," but stretched out over a franchise.

Thanks Bob and that's the big picture
How dare you hit us with the part 2. But it was well timed and well written.
Alan Moore called, he wants his League of Gentlemen pitch back
League of EXTRAORDINARY Gentlemen, FYI. League Of Gentlemen was actually a 1960s heist film Moore pulled that from. And sadly, he ran that concept into the ground, making it devolve into one long game of "I understood that reference".
These are the kind of overthought essays I’m here for. Thank you, & carry on.
Well that's a helluva cliffhanger, Bob 😳
One thing I've been waiting for and hoping when it comes to the MCU is them just getting over the 'origin story' aspect. I'd really love for future movies like Blade (should they ever get around to making it) should just skip the origin enough people have seen the Wesley Snipes version and all you really need to do is drop a quick 20sec exposition if you feel like you really need to explain it. Even the Fantastic Four I'm hoping really doesn't spend much time on it's origin, though I'm afraid half the movie will be devoted to it.
That James Gunn might be skipping that with his new DCU is exciting.
I'm going to be honest, the zebra shirt and gold chain is a good look
Can’t wait for James gunn’s superman already

If you're right about this, Bob, I will also be very excited.

Joke Comment:
Your hit/miss ratio is decent, but it's not Steph Sterling levels of prediction. (Better than Todd-stradamus, but he self-admits to being bad at prediction and has made it an in-joke)
I'll be honest, I'm no longer comfortable with putting creators on pedestals. It never seems to end well. They always let you down somehow.
You can praise someone who do things you think are valuable. And if they stop doing that, you can stop praising them.
I know right? I've been let down so often these past few years I've developed trust issues...
"Never meet your heroes..."
With DC stuff especially, the track record has been terrible.

Who Cares, Because James Gunn is Totally a Hack!!! #FireJamesGunn #BoycottWBD #BoycottDCstudios #RestoreTheSnyderverse
Kinda wish the Bride had 4 arms like the mid 2000s comics, but it’s early.😊
I love that Gunn's approach is taking its time with these projects. This is a welcome change compared to Marvel Studio's "get this out on time before it has a chance to pull its socks up." I love the MCU. There have been some great projects during phases 4 & 5. But Disney's rush to make their own Netflix with blackjack and hookers has made the MCU feel muddled. Too many corners have been cut for the sake of telling a damn good story.
DC Studios has this Hawaiian-time feel to it. We'll get there when we get there.

Oh yeah… it’s all coming together, I’m seeing it too.

Let me guess: bob who loves everything james gunn of course loves this.
Why do you say that like it's a bad thing?
@@jordanloux3883 Less bad and more concerning is what I'd call it. When it comes his storytelling, Gunn has serious limitations and gaps. The Suicide Squad, for instance, feels like it has mostly blank space instead of a second act. So far, these shortcomings hasn't mattered all that much for Gunn. But unless he REALLY pulls this off, it will sooner or later.
