Black Elk Peak, (formerly Harney Peak,) is the highest point in South Dakota at 7,244 feet. The Black Hills are beautiful and on the day we hiked it we got to experience a walk above the clouds. It was otherwordly. This is one of the places I really look forward to getting back to in the future. Special thanks to James Starkey for his voice over work as Black Elk. Join us as we explore America and go highpointing!

Excellent overview of the Black Hills region. This will be good to have the kids watch before our trip later this year.
It is a great area and I know I have said it before but I am really looking forward to getting back there and exploring it further.
Impressive documentation around Black Elk Peak' history, and the suspense of your climb to the top is always welcome.
It's a beautiful area with an intense history that still is relevant today. The Black Hills are one of places I have no hesitation in recommending people visit.
"Remember to register at the kiosk" *Walks right by it.* Haha. I did this hike last May. I didn't realize it was a high point when I was planning the hike. It was a great hike.
We had filmed it but both takes turned out to be a bit out of focus and just didn't look good so off to the trash they went!
great job
Thank you!
Great informative video. Looking forward to your next American rooftop video.
Just dropped New Jersey on 1 Feb, New Mexico coming 1 March. Thanks for watching!
That thumbnail art piece is a very cool salute to the wonderful rocks of the core Paha Sapa
I've climbed Black Elk Peak and the trails around the Sylvan Lake area 3 times now! Once with my grandparents and cousins, once with my family, and once with my girlfriend. Absolutely fantastic video, thanks for sharing!
That's awesome! It's a beautiful area and I look forward to the day I can get back there and explore it some more. Definitely felt like I didn't have enough time when I was there.
I LOVED this highpoint! It’s sooo pretty there!
There were times on the way up with the way that I just had to stop and stare for several minutes. None of the images I photographed that day do any justice to how beautiful it was.
Another great episode! Beautiful landscapes and fascinating geology entwined with the doleful events of the Sioux Wars.
Thank you!
Thank you for another awesome video. Western South Dakota is such a pretty area. It is always nice to see the highpoints without having to make the actual trek. lol 3 miles isn't bad but that 1,000 feet of elevation gain is a beast.
Thanks Diane! I loved the Black Hills area. I wish I would have had another two days to film out there as there was so much to see.
Just needed to point out that you’ll pass by Little Devil’s Tower, not the full sized one in Wyoming😉
I wonder why no mention is given to the entombed ashes of Valentine McGillicuddy along Trail 9?
That's pretty simple actually, this was one of those where I could have added more but I didn't. McGillicuddy was actually in my original notes but this was in that time frame were I was just starting to lengthen things out. When I eventually re-film this episode he'll definitely be mentioned.
Excellent Music Intro, Illustrations, Content and Narration, Thanks.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Why does this guy say hundred that? He says hunnerd 😅
I find it ironic that the Lakota try to claim this land as theirs. It is stolen land and they deserve no claim to it.
0:33 episode? What do you think your little video here on TH-cam is? Episodic television with seasons? What season is this "episode" in?
Man these egregious, big mouth, ego case TH-camrs bug me.
Thanks for checking out Rooftops of America! The channel has a strong educational bent sharing the history and geology of state highpoints though at times its branched out a bit. This episode was Season 5, Episode 4 and was the point in the series where we were finally hitting our stride on what episodes would look like going forward. Cheers!
@@RooftopsofAmerica when does the main character get killed off or has that part not been written yet? Har har harrrr
I'm just in a bad mood because that 5 mile black elk peak hike I did today has me sore in bed right now
@@nirv We'll see how things go on Denali in a few years!
