Don’t count yourself short, your followers watch you for your honesty and that we are all searching for the right motorcycle and i for one appreciate your voice about your trip through ownership of your journey.
I traded my brand new 2022 KLR650, and bought a 2016 Roadster I could not be happier. At 63 my off road days are over, just needed something for the dirt roads the Roadster is fine.
Sounds like you learned something on that hill Jordan... Let the bike do the work .. find your balance point and it will do what it is engineered to do .. even on bigger hills ... Stay safe and continue to push your boundaries..
FYI: The DR650 only weighs about 360# wet (before you swap in a larger Acerbis tank), which is about 80# less than Jess's Himalayan. I think you might have found "the bike".... as long as you're ok with a 34" - 35" seat height.
Great vid bud, please do not sell yourself short. You are doing a great job, and taking us all along on your life of discovery as far as biking is concerned. I have been riding bikes legally on the road for 53 years, and off road for a few years longer. My advice for dirt bikes is stay light. A 250 cc 2 stroke such as a Suzuki RM250 was a flying machine even back in the early seventies. Please try a light dirt bike and make a video about your experience.
I am not a bike rider but really enjoy your videos. You present information that would help anyone looking for a new motorcycle, specifically for their needs. You have a great sense of humor, sometimes very dry (which I love). Thank you for being you and keep up the great job. 🏍️👍🕶️🤓
Hello Jordan, I am just catching up with some of your videos. You are more than welcome, and I am glad you finally took it out that day. Maybe we can get them together someday out in South Dakota or on BDR someday. It really is a swiss army knife bike and it really can do almost anything. It is factory-lowered since I am vertically challenged as well.
I'm a big fan of your videos and as far as I'm concerned they are never too long. Keep up the great work and I hope your subscriber numbers continue to grow. You deserve it.
You completing that hill climb with the loose stuff was definitely a great boost of needed confidence and a growth of skillset. Well done! Happy for you got to ride some bikes to test out, these events are great for it. I don't think we have something like that over here in The Netherlands. And shout out to the fan and subscriber of both you and Jess's channel for him to let you test his own bike. I think it's a great bike as well and good that you've been eyeballing it on those. I never rode one, but like the DRZ400 they been out there for a long time. And since it's Japanese which equals to reliability especially if maintained well.
I watched the whole video. Good stuff, really enjoyed it. Awesome that you got to test ride a bike from a subscriber, good way for you to figure out the best bike for you.
A DR650 with a lectron carb to avoid jetting when you change altitude, and a better exhaust, and a acerbis fuel tank and handguards would be a great bike.
Glad you got to try the Pan and the DR. I set on a new 1200 sportster and a used 883 with nice risers at Bert's today. It was a 05 i think. It felt good. Glad you 2 are having fun. Good vid
Yes, that 650 is perfect... I have been looking for one for a long time. I will sell my big tourer and uppgrade😂 to a 650 or 800 for sure. Big thanks Jordan!!
Hey Jordan, It's Don from Colorado. Great to meet you at the event! So glad you got to ride the DR650! Have to say I had a great time at the vent, so much fun, so little time!
@@JordanRay I think you'd have a ball. The grin on your face with that DR650... And for the kind of basecamp-to-trail riding that seems to be where you're at it is a great choice. I crush a lot of miles on my GS on the pavement so it's a better fit for me but get the right tool for the job you want to do. Rock on Sir!
Thanks for the video, Jordan. It was so good to meet you at ADV Fest. Do you happen to remember the name of the ADV bike rental company that was at the end of row that Triumph, Aprillia, MOTO GUZZI, was on? They had a couple of Himalayans, a T7 and a couple other motorcycles for rent.
That’s the type of bike I’d like to get some day for the same reasons. I rode small dirt bikes before I ever rode a street bike and would like to go off road again sometime. Have fun!
The drz 650 and 400 are amazing bikes. Been around forever. Power is about the same. 650 is air cooled while the 400 is water cooled. Tons of aftermarket for both
I had a DR 650 when I first started riding off pavement, what an awesome bike!! I don’t have it anymore because I will sometimes travel some distances to get to cool riding areas, so I have a VStrom now, but I still miss the DR!!
Great video! I liked the photos at the end. I had a '96 Honda XR250L and a '96 Honda XR 650L. The 250 was basically stock and the 650 had the Acerbis tank on it. Both were fantastic, nimble bikes (the 650 more "slab" capable than the 250, of course). I made highway pegs for the 650, which really helped eat those highway miles. They're in the same class as the DR. Might check those out, too. Keep up the good work!
Great meeting you guys at the AVD fest - sorry I missed the rest of weekend...that friday I broke my ankle and fibula on the trails.....rode back to Ohio 1,300 miles Sat/Sun...hahah Enjoy your trip!!! -
Hi Jordan check out the DR650 or a xr650 they are both carbureted and air cooled but they both weigh about 350 lb or even some of the smaller bikes from the big 4 Japanese factories . Like the DRZ400 or a 350. The DR650 is a excellent bike for all around use.
The DR650 is an intriguing bike and I know exactly what you mean by throwing around a lighter bike. It comes in a great price point too. You really appreciate that feel on the single track trails and loose sand. I'd like to try some of the big ADV's. I'm not optimistic about my desire to get one though. I'm sure i would be much happier with a middle weight displacement. The market has a lot of choices. I saw they have the Aprillia ADV that a lot of people like but then be concerned about manufacturer/dealer support issues. I'm aiming to buy a retro naked but an ADV is definitely THE second bike on my list. Best wishes with whatever you go with. Thanks to you and Jess for taking us along.
Still think you need to check out the DRZ400 kitted out proper!! It would be even more manageable and lighter than the 650 off-road!! Since YOU go nowhere at breakneck speed, and want to hone your skills off-road I don't think you would be sacrificing much except even more weight. Plus, the 400 just feels like more of a dirt bike for all things versus the 650 feeling more street but capable off-road....😉 Anyway, y'all stay safe and enjoy yourselves!!! Plenty of GOOD TIMES to be had.....😊
I can't remember if I already told you this. This Suzuki DR650 is the preferred bike by the Panamanian police. I am also a Buckeye but presently and expat living in Panama. The motorcycle can go anywhere from off-road to back alleys to up and down church steps, and all over the place with ease. There are suspension modifications you can get as well as the gas tanks which you already mentioned. A lot of guys when they get the bigger gas tanks get the neutral non-colored tank so that they can see the level of gas by the shadow of the gas sloshing around. By the way the only difference with the police and a solo rider is that they ride two up in cammies with the guy on the back with a lock and loaded Uzi. I think this Suzuki DR650 is your best bet.
@@JordanRay It's actually semi-clear. It's just a neutral plastic with no coloring so that you can see the shadow of the fuel. But yes it's a good idea. Plus it doesn't absorb solar heat.
Glad ya trying bikes to find what ya like. I thought you may liked the CFMoto being lighter than PanAm. But it seems like you'll find your next bike soon enough.
The thing that people tend to do when riding in sand and gravel is to fight the bike too much. The bike will tend to wander a bit but it's best to just ride with a light input on the bars, keep your weight centered and allow the bike to move under you.
At different variations yes, that’s why I think it’s just my perception and not the bikes faults. I think I just prefer a little more steering resistance.
it was great to meet you and jess, even if just to say hi. it was a good thing you didn't go on any of the easy trails, that little tiny beginner loop was not nearly as difficult than the larger easy loops.
I'm leaving Sunday for Sturgis. Staying at Shade Valley Campground in a cabin- 7 miles east of the Chip. Hope to meet you guys out there. Are you doing any meet n greets? I ride a 2006 1st gen klr650 as a daily commuter, a 2022 HD Ultra Apex for traveling/ rallies and a 2018 ktm690 fire breathing dragon for my desert racing bike. The 650cc size is a great all-around bike. The Kawasaki and the Honda both are great bikes with a lot of aftermarket support. Pretty much bulletproof, been around a long time.
Hope you get a chance to ride the Yamaha Tenere 700 and the Aprilia Tuareg. From what I understand, each of those come closer to the experience that you likely had with the DR than many other ADV specific models.
Hi Jordan, have you thought about checking out the Ktm 390 adventure? I have the duke 390 and it goes well. Just the 390 Adventure is built more like you have been explaining maybe. Cheers
Yea, being able to pick your bike up is a big deal if you plan to ride trails alone. On a street bike, someone will eventually drive by that can help. That might take days in the woods.
The Suzuki DR650 is a dual sport so is the Honda XR650L the Kawasaki KLR650 is entry level adventure the Suzuki DR650 has the shortest seat hight the Kawasaki KLR650 will probably be the most comfortable on long rides
Hey Jordan, You should try the Ducati Desert Sled. You may like it, It's a bike I would like to get for myself. I think It's cool you get to participate in events like this. Yes I stayed to the end of the video I always do. I enjoy your content and can't wait to see what the future brings you and your channel.
dr650 and ktm500 were my choices to look for. dr is simpler with air cooled and carb. the 500 is rock solid though and more power than dr and can also do 70mph if needed. and probably 100 lbs lighter than dr. if you can find one of those to throw a leg over be sure to ride it too. 500 better off rd by a long shot. dr better on long trips by a long shot. can't go wrong with either bike. both great!
I have a great bike for you. 379 pounds, 44 horsepower and the best suspension in its class. Also a great TFT dash. TC and ABS that you can switch off. Other farkles as well. KTM 390 Adventure. Only 3,000 miles on it.
Glad I found this clip. I'll be heading out this July 2024 for the Get On ADV-Fest in Sturgis.
You’ll really enjoy it, there’s so much more there than I covered.
