    43 yrs in the trade. Retired now. Was good financially but rough on the body, eyes and lungs. Where ever the money was I went. Took family with me .yup still married too. Son's now in the trade.
    Pipe ,structure ,pressure vessels, didn't matter. Retired from aviation welding.
    So brothers its out there, it pays if you're good ,and it will make you a nice retirement if you're smart.

  • @sshep7119
    @sshep7119 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    The people that talk smack about welds in situations like this are the people who are not in the industry, or have not been in the industry long enough to come across this type of situation. All the work looks good from what the video shows. Just a few things, practice welding with a mirror. Make a small C shaped bracket that can hold a mirror 8 to 12" from the face of your helmet, put the pipe in between the mirror and the helmet then practice. The mirror being held by your helmet frees up your hands, if you are doing the work sometimes you just have to get creative. I was shown a "welding helmet" from one of the guys who taught me a lot about welding, he did a lot of work in nuclear power plants. The helmet was basically a small piece of plastic with a lens mounted on it with some small protective plastic for the face, he holds the plastic bracket in his teeth and the glass does it's thing. He had to use it multiple times doing pipe work. The big thing when you are dealing with planned distortion (the pipes not being parallel like in the video), learn the percentage of shrinkage and keep a field journal. You can use some simple math that will allow you to determine how far up the pipe to place two tacks to act as fulcrums and how big of a tack to put at the top. As the top tack cools and shrinks, the top gap will close and the bottom gap will open through the 2 tacks becoming pivots. You will get really good at predicting where to place the tacks and having your gap settle at an even distance top and bottom.

    • @ImplantedMemories

      have you ever considered that they need the steam 24/7, and can't Turn it off ? Industrial units are usually operated 24/7. Only time for maintainance is a turnaround.
      If they wouldn't need a constant steam supply they would fix this yellow hole in the steam pipe as soon as possible. Welding is a cheap fix for them. Wasted steam ist expensive over time

    • @ChanHarris96
      @ChanHarris96 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don’t have use steam in our facility we use basically a oil that is heated up using gas turbine generators and fired heaters but to get back on track turning off that steam line might not be an option bc if the steam is there and lined up while it’s leaking it’s still lined up for a reason heat is pretty important for the unit depending on what it’s used for heating up reboilers, reactors, or dehydration units on heating cycle. If heating is lost some units will need to be shutdown because they’re off spec. It’s a domino effect in this industry you might not think of it that way but shutting that one valve to benefit a job might mess up a whole unit.

    Retired, certified, high-pressure, Boilermaker welder. Over the years I've welded standing, sitting, on a ladder, kneeling, laying on my back/stomach, even kneeling welding between my legs. Welded in 100 degree+ weather, snow, below freezing, and at a blast furnace (at night in the winter) had one side roasting while the other side froze. Followed procedures and even told engineers how they were screwing up, with a faster solution to the problem. Had to weld on "dead metal" hundreds of feet in the air. Yes I got the big money, but I earned every penny.

    This video resonates with me bc I was that guy and hung steel and welded it for six yrs till I had a bad accident at work where I fell thirty feet and shattered both arms. It was the height that got me and the amount of weight I had in gear that drove me into the concrete when I finally hit.
    That said, I often lamented the amount of time and energy it would take to get myself and all the tools and leads into position to start welding. Then if the fit up was bad it only compounded the issue further.

    X ray guy here. That shit is rad! Lol good enough to pass x ray and whatever else NDT Q/C has. What does your other welds look like? You are to hard on your self. That was a tight spot and iam sure your you crushed it. It probably passed totally fine .
