The male or female actually depends on the family. Some Japanese families have the genders swapped. For both: mouth open is to scare demons and spread peace through voice, mouth closed is to keep the peace in while simultaneously keeping the evil out.

And now I need a whole Manga or anime/movie of the adventures of the lion dogs. I feel like it would fit with studio ghibli. Like a human character has to help one half of the pair find their mate because they were stolen by some shady black market antiques/artifacts dealer and they meet all kinds of other mythological creatures who help along the way.

Fun fact, King Cesar/King Shisa from the original Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla is one of these critters.

Really Chinese Buddhist in origin, even Shintoism inherited Buddhist elements… I don’t see any prebuddhist origins other than elements of lions being introduced as an artistic symbol from Central Asia outside of China. There should be NO HORN it’s a rare depiction. but there are rare depictions…it looks like it’s from Korea the horn come from and thats dokkaebi fun 🤩
