    unless you're in extremely cold conditions, or with a group, generally synthetic is a better option. it's very warm and tends to keep you dry 99% of the time. it just needs to be washed. very often.

    • @SolivagantJules
      @SolivagantJules  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah definitely :) I don’t always get to do my laundry because I live in a camper so wool is better for me 😂

    • @adjo82

      What is classed as extremely cold? I'm going on my first ski holiday in January and the weather is -8 to -2 degrees Celsius.

    • @EpicToxicshrimp
      @EpicToxicshrimp ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adjo82 you should be fine. i would put synthetic as the less desirable option at around -12 or -13 degrees Celsius. but it's very hard to imagine a time snowboarding/skiing that wool is the better choice for most riders.

    • @SolivagantJules
      @SolivagantJules  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@adjo82 I think its up to preference and also what you already have. This vid is gear towards using what you have in your closet to be warm on the slopes - I'm for wool all day everyday, it's more environmentally friendly, and lasts in your closet longer, but everyone has their opinion. I also ride about 170 days a year, and never has any of my wool base layers pilled or looked damaged.

      I'm a smelly person naturally and synthetic is awful for me, I sweat super hard and can't get the smell out.

    For the bottoms baselayer or long johns I usually get the full length ones because they are typically cheaper. Then I cut them about 3-4 inches past the knee. I hand sew up the cut edge. I learned to hand sew on YT, my stitches look terrible but it holds.

    • @SolivagantJules
      @SolivagantJules  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely have done that too, I have a pair of synthetic patagonia mens bottoms that were full length and wayyyyyy too long for me anyways so I just cut them. Didn't stitch them because they're synthetic and are holding without losing thread. Repairing your own gear and learning how to sew though is such a valuable skill - I fix my friends clothes all the time! Good on you :)

    The smell difference between wool and polyester is huuuge! One day with a polyester shirt and it’ll stink up your room (way worse than cotton, poly fibers attract odor compunds). With wool you can get away with reusing stuff for several days.
    Wool ski socks for example - you only need two pairs to rotate with (if one gets too wet), even for a long ski trip.

    I went to an ice fishing sports store for my ski clothes. Same technical design as ski clothes but at a third the price. Because ice fishing isn't sexy. lol

    I wore some wool socks (smart wool) snowboarding and they kept chafing my legs against the boots and they were horribly uncomfortable! Another problem I have is the tubes of the socks suffocate my leg nearly cutting off circulation! Nearly all socks my mom buys me do it and I don't have fat legs or small feet! Help!

    • @SolivagantJules
      @SolivagantJules  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So sorry that happened! Maybe wool irritates your skin, might not be the best choice then. I've always worn smartwool without issues, but everyone is different :) Maybe try a different blend or try switching to synthetic. I have friends who swear by Darn Tough socks because they don't have seams that cause pressure. You can also try to wear silk sock liners underneath so your socks don't chafe your legs, that also helps keep your sweat away from your feet, lessening the chance of chafing

      I find knee high, tight fitting socks are always the best. If they are lose they will bunch up or fall down. if they are too short, they don't protect your legs from the boots. There are some ski socks that are padded in areas and very thin in others so they don't get to warm while protecting your legs from the boots. I would recommend the investment. I usually only go once a week and just keep wearing the same pair.

    How wet do you get? I bought a Canada goose citedel jacket and the Canada goose snow pants, will that be okay for snowboarding/skiing?

    • @SolivagantJules
      @SolivagantJules  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean that depends on the weather and also what kind of skiing you do. If it’s really coming down, you may have snow pile up while on the lift. You’ll probably stay mostly on groomers so you don’t have to worry about getting in wet and deep powder. Sounds like you have a rad set up. Read the tag to see if it’s all water repellent :)

    • @Spiceysec
      @Spiceysec 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SolivagantJules it’s water resistant but if it gets too wet I don’t want to ruin the down inside the jacket and pants. The documentation is quite blurry when it comes to mentioning how water resistant they are. I know they are meant for snow but water would usually be already ice/snow at -30 Celsius and below. I may need to find an alternative to wear. Do you have any suggestions of brands? Thanks.
