This is the best pet groom I have seen in 15 years of Cavaliers. I can’t understand how owners that gush over how beautiful the breed is and then have them shaved down. The shaved hair feels sharp and itchy to me. I would prefer to see her belly to chest outline longer at the chest, but since she wears a harness, I’m sure this is the better route to alleviate matting. I’ll be sharing your video with Cavalier pet owners. Thank you for doing it!
learned so many new things: cotton balls in ears; undercoat rake; detangling spray; hand blade tech; curved shears; ear cleaner...thank you so much. lady looked great! hopefully, peyton will look just as put together.
Finally a thorough video on this technique. Good camera movement at every step. Content explanations are very well stated. As another reviewer said, I felt like actually learned a lot.
I'm so glad I found this. My salon manager swears that cavaliers don't have double coats and shaves them.... I have black and tans at home and refuse to shave them but that means I've never seen the correct way to groom.
I'm happy you found this too lol! They definitely shed. There is one cavalier on my Instagram sitting next to a pile of his undercoat. I think it also just depends on preference.
I love how you add comments from Lady! Best dogs in the world! I have 3 cavaliers and one that might be a cavapoo.❤❤❤ You are sooo patient and talkative with her. . .that sets my heart at ease. I have always done my own grooming . . . But I have never learned how to do scissor cuts. Luckily my cavaliers are all less than 1 year old. . . We shall all learn together. When I owned Springer spaniels, the breeder recommended the "Mars" medium stripper. I liked how your's worked.
You did a lovely job! I love how gentle you are and the fact that you used a happy hoodie to protect her hearing during drying!! If you were in my area, I would 100% trust you to groom my cavalier.
This was a wonderful video and very helpful. I loved the way you handled the dog and never hurt her and always talked to her in a gentle voice. Thank you for this video!
Oh how I wish you were in my area (Ottawa)! Best Cav groom I have seen! You addressed so many concerns/issues m. My Cav is just over a year and up until now we have groomed purely at home but considering a professional groom now but so worried we will have a bad experience of someone who does not know what they’re doing!
Thank you so much This video is so well done from explanation & demonstration to the excellent camera work. I have a 6month old cavalier-poodle cross. He has not developed an undercoat at this stage but he is furnished like a long silky coated cavalier . I groomed my previous Bichon Frisée for the 15 years of her life but had no idea how to even start with my glorious soft wavy haired puppy. I’ve learnt so much & know I will be revisiting this beautiful video often. ❤
I like this lovely video. My groomer works similarly so my cav has the natural look too. So nice. Gracie is not a show dog but the show standard is very natural too- no trimming except the bottom of the feet! So I call her cut, which is something like this one, "show dog-light"!
Great video! I especially like the explanation on the nail trimming! I always looked for the pink/white area and aimed for getting close. Regarding the stripping blade - I saw another video where they "card" the undercoat. What are your thoughts on carding? Have you used this method on a CKCS?
Looks like my 10 month old Cavalier girl! How do you keep her coat shiny? I took her to a groomer that has certification by AKC board for a simple shampoo and a little nail clip plus light trim between paw pads, keeping her grinch feet and absolutely nothing else. She went in with a shiny coat and was still damp. (They didn’t want to traumatize her with the blower.) her coat is extremely dull. Her ears and head are glossy and shiny but the rest is not a month later. I use a boar bristle brush every two days to help her tame her coat and distribute natural oils but, I’ve yet to see her sheen return. Please advise
Wow!❤ You did an awesome job! I love how calm, patient, and gentle you were grooming her! I have a Cavalier King Charles and was looking for tips on grooming him. Thank you for this video!❤ Love from Minnesota. 😁
I love how calming and gentle you are with your grooming technique. Can you please tell me the brand and name of the scissors you use to groom Lady's feet to achieve that messy natural look?

Thank you! You can check out my "Top 10 Dog Groomer Must Haves" I go over some of my favorite products but I guess I could make a video like that in the near future! Thanks for the idea!
Love the video. I learned about carding when I owned a Cocker Spaniel years ago from a show groomer. Works great! I just love my caviler, Josie. She has such a big personality. I have noticed they can be as happy as possible but they have that pouty look on their face all the time!

Love your videos! You are so caring to all the adorable fur babies you groom. I just wish your videos were in their original state instead of being covered with music and fast speed. Other than that, you are very knowledgeable and you do a fantastic job!
You are definitely a gentle groomer! The Sanitary trim: OMGosh! I'll never forget the one time I took my Cava/Chin to a local (small town) groomer. He came out looking like a bare a$$ baboon! She shaved him from belly all the way up to his butt! It took FOREVER to grow back!
@@furkids4ever abosolrtely😡! I was livid. It took many months for his long silky hair to even remotely resemble what kind of dog breed he was. Grrrrr. She shaved his back side straight up like an airplane tarmac. Shaved up his 12” hair several inches upward past his rump off his beautiful long haired silky tail too. Now part of his tail looked like a rat’s hairless tail. And she was highly recommended. I don’t get why people fall in love with an expensive, beautiful, specific dog breed only to shave them so they can resemble mutts from a dog pound. I have no issue with adopting homeless pets. I had a beloved rescue dog ears back, that we took in from the humane society. She lived a very long healthy life and being a shepherd/ collie mix she was as smart as could be. She could open doors, turn on faucets if her water bowl was empty and nobody was home. Or fling the heavy metal dog bowl down the basement steps repeatedly if my brother forgot to feed her. Usually after midnight, until someone got up to deed her. She understood very complex commands to list her many talents and attributes would take paragraphs. We had taken to spelling things out so she wouldn’t understand until she became puzzled and finally caught on to what we were spelling. lol.
I keep my cavalier's coat natural length as well..I find shaven cavaliers loose their elegance and beauty, their coat is what makes these dogs look so gorgeous and regal. it doesn't change their character but still !!!!!
I groom my own cavalier, and I was wondering if you can use thinning shears on the back instead of the stripping blade. I don't think I'd be comfortable using that. Piper doesn't stand still during his grooming... Best cavie grooming video, btw.
You could use thinning shears for sure but it wouldn't give the same look. I stopped using a stripping blade and only use an undercoat rake :). Thank you and thanks for watching!
Omg the moment when she stops getting petted, looks back with the "why did you stop?" face. Realizes you are going to continue and goes to the camera person for pets. Such a cavalier thing to do!

Medium and/or Coarse. The thickness of the coat will depict which of the two will be more effective. I didn't get much undercoat out of Lady here but there is a cavalier I got TONS of hair out of on my Instagram @magdalenagrooms.
Magdalena, there are actually hypoallergenic breeds as hypo means "less than normal" but people take it to mean "not at all" so the hypoallergenic breeds produce less dander and hair/fur than other breeds making allergies more manageable or virtually non existent to that particular animal. Also, for people who are really allergic, you can book an appointment with an allergist, and you can get tested. Perhaps even start a course of injections to build up your resistance to allergens!
Very good job... but I keep my cavalier at a number 2 all over. For the last 3 years she just does not grow long hair so I literally never have to face a Cavalier with long hair.
Ouch... that sentence was painful to read back to myself. I keep my cavalier short as it suits her personality... she swims nearly every day and loves running about the woods... when Cavalier's have long hair they pick up EVERY stick, slug etc and you have to get them out after the walk. Cavalier's are active dogs that LOVE runni g and playing... cut them as short as you can and let them be free :)
Yes!! I've definitely done shorter haircuts on dogs for those exact reasons. Let the dog be a dog. Some parents could care less for brushing and leave it all up to the groomer which is A O K.
So don't ask for an outline trim from your groomer. Some people like getting their hair trimmed bc they live a busy lifestyle, still want their dogs to swim and be a dog without the hassle of having to brush every single day. They are being mindful of the fact that they can't maintain a full coat and don't want their dogs to get matted. Jerk.
In the end creating more work and stress on the groomer and DOG. If you actually watched the video and didn't jump to conclusions you would have understood that. Byee
I agree with this person's point of view regarding the aesthetics of a Cavalier but this is just rude. You are running a business and need to make your clients happy and do what's right for the dog. Thanks for sharing and ignore the haters!
A good groomer grooms to the owner’s preference, not their own. Have you ever gotten your own hair cut by a stylist who completely ignored your instructions? Same thing. Most of my customers prefer 8 week appointments and want the clip to last.

If you plan on showing a Cavalier, no hair cutting/trimming is allowed. The only place the fur can be trimmed is on the bottom of their feet.
Thank you for your input Sarah. This is definitely a pet trim.
Her parents should be brushing her every day. If that is to much for them then they should have her hair cut short. My cats hair is cut short
Not messy feet; they are her slippers. 😉
😂
If Cavaliers are fixed too early they get a thick coat
I have seen other videos here on TH-cam where the so-called groomer is just brutal compared to you!!!!
Thank you! Everyone's practices are different.
You are not supposed to trim Cavaliers except their footpads.
Don’t like all the fast speed. Can’t learn the correct way watching that fast
CKCS are a no-trim breed. The ears are tragic.
They may be: Until it is in their best interest to be trimmed 😊
If a groomer cut off all my Cavalier ‘s feathers I would never bring him back again. Horrible job!
@@missfireandice1 Thank you❤! I will try to in the future. I've gotten a lot of great and helpful feedback from a lot of people.
A good groomer grooms to the owner’s preference, not their own. Have you ever gotten your own hair cut by a stylist who completely ignored your instructions? Same thing. Most of my customers prefer 8 week appointments and want the clip to last.
