- Hello everyone! This week I sang the Hurt Incantation/Moon Incantation!
Here is a lil I feel guilty I didn’t upload last weekend video for you all. BOY was I excited when I saw this on twitter. It’s truly an homage to all those Disney goth edits whether the creators of the show know it or not.
The original song was super short and I wasn’t super into the lyrics I saw floating around, so I wrote my own! Everyone seemed to like the extended lyrics I wrote from Della’s Moon Lullaby a couple weeks back, so hopeful you enjoy my take on these.
Also shout out to the man and legend Andrew [spywi -- / @spywi ], who is always coming through on my impulse ideas for covers and instrumentals. He is always such a pleasure to work with and his piano playing is something I always look forward to sing with.

No this is ignoring kids in favor of appealing to insecure animation fans who want to tell kids to screw off.
I liked the show better when it was fun and not trying to win over edgelords.
@McKenzie Eby Disney made *Hellfire* when I was a kid. That was waaaaay darker than this. Nothing actually happens when she sings this song that would be too much for a little one. If/when I have kids, I hope they like the movie and want to watch the show. I wouldn't have a problem with them seeing this scene. I do appreciate it as an adult fan because I love the movie and I love how the show can both go new places as well as expand upon the concepts of the film.
I have no insecurities about my appreciation nor wish to exclude the target demographic. I did love this sudden turn when I first saw it but I always love when Disney gets dark in general because I think they do it rather well. Again, Hunchback of Notre Dame.

McKenzie Eby okay, but life isn’t always puppies and rainbows. Life is sad and dark sometimes, and in my opinion it’s crucial to include those moments even in kids movies.
Kids need to grow up knowing what life can throw at them at any minute, not skip around with rose tinted glasses.
Now, I’m not saying you should make the movie about death and suffering, because that is too dark for a kid. But, the sad or heartfelt moments in a movie is what makes it touch your heart in a way.
This "hurt incantation" just changed everything.

"Break these earthly chains" I think refers to a persons life yes but viewed very cynical and dark. "These earthly chains" refers to your body that keeps you on earth hense "earthly chains" and when you break "these earthly chains" it basically means you kill the body. If you kill the body the spirit/soul is free from it so you are "setting the spirit free"
If I can define this song in a sentence it'd be- "The chances of being killed by my hair are low. But never zero."

Wow, this song is so deep. I still think this is almost like a rebirth song, it's still a "healing" song, but it talks about letting something end/die and set it free for it to transform. It's really deep. Very plutonic, dark femenine energy, I love it

The darkest thing about this incantation is that it almost sounds like a poem that someone would recite as they're about to commit suicide. Especially when it gets to the part about "End this destiny, break these earthly chains, and set the spirit free". 😥

Can you make a mashup version with mixed singing of the hurt incantation AND the healing incantation!? That would be REALLY COOL.....
I always found the way that the hair sprawling out during the hurting incantation to be reminiscent of a sea monster, or of death touch sprawling out to reach those whose time it is to go.
Can we just talk about how beautiful this is? It took a song that was so calming and good natured, and made it into a eerie melody that I wouldn’t be surprised as background music in a nightmare.
Just pure art if you ask me.

We have seen multiple renditions of the Healing Incantation in the Tangled movie alone. The switching vocals mirrors the changing directions of life and add length to the it. However, the Hurt Incantation is short and sung in the minor key, symbolizing the abruptness and finality of death.
I love how no one noticed that I made the intro as the minor key version of I See The Light, or the little thing Anna added to the end (or maybe I just haven’t found those comments yet)
