How to widen steel rims yourself!

- It's Wifey Wednesday! Time to do some more work on the Renault/VW Beetle project. In this round, we widen the stock VW Beetle rims from 4J to 8J to fit wider tires . We first build a jig with some offcuts found in the shop and then widen the rims using basic tools only.

Paint them a metallic charcoal colour. It will go great with the chrome hubcap.
With the yellow pinstripe as has been suggested.
Yep black with a yellow pin strip. You can set up your contraption to achieve this. Be bloody awesome

Impressive, as always. They are making some nice looking chrome paints these days. But, I think the black and chrome caps will look sweet, too. Wheels take such a beating from rocks and stuff. Maybe powder coat them for durability.
You did a great job on the rims. I hope the Mrs. agrees with you on the black color!! It will look fantastic with the VW hub caps, we call them hub caps too here in the US, thanks for another outstanding video!!

I know it would probably cost a fortune, but a full chrome plated wheel would look killer! Aside from chrome a black or dark gun metal grey wheel with a chrome beauty ring and hub cap would definitely feel Era correct!

great video man, we used to do that years ago for grass track racing with beetles but also reduced the rim using 13 inch rims and beetle centers for better gearing. jook up hot rod racing ireland from the 80s in wexford on you tube we used all sorts of engines from 4 cyl fords fiats lancias to rover v 8s on vw bus gearboxs, great times.matt ireland.

Just gave me an idea for the rear rims for my 73 Charger, keep the look of the old skool steel rims with beauty rings and the dog dish hubcaps and still have some nice wide tires on the rear without spending a small fortune, thank you and hope your wife goes with black with chrome hubcaps, nice work sir

Love your jig, I have a similar problem but in reverse, I need to narrow two rims for a small tractor, so two cuts and weld back together, I will be using tubes in the tyres so the weld will have to be dressed smooth, but no problem with that. Enjoyed the post, good to see custom work from somewhere other than the west coast USA 😊.

Your grinding contraption reminds me of my whitewall contraption. I made a similar grinder mount to take thin stripe whitewalls and white letter tires and turn them into wide whitewalls! Forest engineering - even in the city! Great job Div!
Back in the early 90s I worked at a dealership and they would pay this old man to do that. He had a factory made contraption and he'd do it for $10 a tire.

Div, I commend you on your clever grinding fixture. Well-worth the effort to ensure a straight cut! I'm not really a fan of black wheels (even with the chrome caps) because in my opinion, they kind of blend in with the tires- no contrast. If you want a bit of contrast to show the rims without being overbearing, I like using a graphite or gunmetal colour. Just enough to separate the rim from the tire.

Great job, I think black rims with a yellow pin strip. You could use your wheel stand and a pin stripping brush to paint the stripe.

I think silver looks pretty clean on the steel wheels with caps.
Lazy way of getting the band 'rough sized' is 2πr (so diameter x 3.14) AND add on 2x the distance between
center-outer roller (the end 'flat' areas missed when slip rolling). Scribe the 2πr length for trimming off the two 'flat' ends 👍
The alternative (saves material) is just use a 2πr length of flat and after but welding the 'flats', run that area through the rollers several times 😁😎😁

Rims look great! I like widened steelies. I think black but you can also do black with the outer edge of the rim (inside would be the tire bead seating area) White to make it look like a partial white wall or even yellow for that matter.
Awesome job. Making me want to do my own for my Karmann Ghia. Cream color, off white-ish is what I would pick if I was doing it.

I grew up with cars from the 60's ol' mate, '69 the best year . . . not sure I needed a reminder. A big shifting spanner is good for gently taking out a bent rim. I must have respoked and hand balanced 100's of wire wheels in my time
Stateside hubcap covers the whole dia. of the rim. The center caps have a few nick names like baby moon, dog dish etc. and the outer chrome trim ring aka beauty ring. Black rim/background will accent the rim and give it the depth you added.

Nice work. I'm a fabricator / car builder by trade, and this is a very reasonable, very clean way to do a job that's usually farmed out to specialists...if you can even find anybody with the skills these days.

My uncle took the centers out of his original rims and put them into the wide rims of his choice from the junkyard for his van, they worked great

A clean white wil reflecte nice from the hubcaps and make the wheels appear a bit bigger it wil also show of more of the craftsmanship by attracting more attention

My first choice are yellow 💛 rims. Would look awesome with the original chromed hub caps. My second choice is silver or grey. I would not paint the rims black because they're not easy to keep clean (you have a lot of gravel/dirt roads in your region).

Back in the olden days😊 the shop I worked at two toned the VW wheels. Body color on the outer rim and a lighter shade on the inner part. Looked real nice. I like the cutting / welding jig! Thanks from chilly Wisconsin! 18' F right now!😢
