That was awesome, what a great guy! He's right, I'm one of the silent majority that just use vim every day and just love it as it is. I use VERY few plugins, just a couple tpope plugins (He's the best) and airline. Everything else I found that vim does better and cleaner than most plugins. I subscribe to his philosophy of slow and wide support because my vimrc works on every old server I've been on. It's the best software I use.
I hate to disagree but you can't never make vim script better than python, there are literally tons of libraries how can vim script compete with that? Regarding dependencies vim plugin ecosystem needs something like python pip for installing/checking requirements and for version compatibility. I actually just ran into an issue where vim-fugitive latest broke airline plug in and I had to downgrade to an earlier version tag branch. The big issue with implementing something like pip is that there's no clear definition of plugin writing. If you look at 3 plugins they are all different. In a pip package setup.py controls setup, requirements, etc. So for this to work you need an index like pypi but for vim plugins. If there's no index then as you've said a small vim plugin which manages dependencies would be the next best choice. Regarding git and github I think this year is a clear indication that Microsoft doesn't want to privatize github. Nevertheless if github went away, anybody in the world would be able to run a git server. In fact I think a git server just for vim plugins would be awesome.
