The child in me was glued to the screen watching this ! I too drifted from toy trains in my teens but it never really left, and I've returned albeit decades later. Great fun Oscar, and looking forward to seeing your other present running soon. Thanks for making these great films.

Fantastic Oscar, You have just made my day! When you put the set on the layout was just brilliant & great fun. You gave me a laugh as well with your commentary when it was derailing, Thank you!

I imagine these will become quite collectible in time, as they were very short-lived. Hornby realised that although they hoped it would kick off a whole new range, it had some flaws which meant it wasn’t particularly well received. They’ve started releasing a completely different kids range now

A modern twist on the traditional train set.
Looks like great fun and what a good way to get younger people into the hobby.

Good morning James as you say hopefully it will keep many entertained long enough to develop an interest in the hobby. It certainly is good fun although I'm sure how long the track will last at playtime. But a problem shared with all train sets in this category...
      Thanks again take care.

Great video, as always, Oscar and the Class 4P 2-6-4T is a real stunner. It was fun to see the Hornby Junior on your layout. I've been collecting Juniors for a while and I'm having a great time re-engineering them into fairly decent, track powered HSTs. All the best....Tom
(as an aside, notice the train in the photo on the front of the Junior box is different to the train inside. I made a video about this called 'Hornby and the mystery of the Italian trains'.)

I wondered if the train was something initiated by the old Lima company which Hornby continued with several years later and released.

Good morning Tom I'm looking forward to running the tank locomotive. The Juniors look like a good starting point for some fun modelling.

Many thanks Oscar. What a wonderful present for £15. Quite a stylish looking train. It was nice to see it run on the big layout as well. I agree with Peter's comment. I too drifted away from model trains, but the love of railways never really leaves you does it.

Excellent again Oscar! I bought the Junior set for my second grandson and the year after the ‘Paddington’ set (he loves Paddington). He’ll soon be 2 so it’ll be a couple of years before Mum lets him have them out! 😆 His big Brother will have a layout by then (he’s coming up to 5 and is in line for a Grandad built layout!). Great sets for little hands.

Oscar, hiding at 7:43 and 8:26 is the Hornby model of the E2 from the LBSCR. An amazing amount of interest now in this locomotive from younger people all around the world.
Arising from this loco being the basis of a certain fictional tank engine.
If you ever come across one at a reasonable price I think you will be amazed at how much new viewers you would get from covering this.
So many younger people are so aware of the E2 leading them to comment hopefully that every small side tank engine looks like an E2 or wanting one to be produced.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Good morning John I had no idea this model had so much interest. I do have the Hornby Railways R.353 LBSC version of the E2 from 1979 I think it got a paint finish in 1980 and a change in the R number to R.315. I shall have to get around to including it in a video. Thanks again for watching and the information it's much appreciated.
      Take care.

Brilliant Oscar. Thanks for making me laugh this morning when this suddenly came up as your comedy present! In fairness it's a nice bonus that it runs on normal track...And I think the sounds make it better. Intended perhaps. It also looks very similar to a Pendolino so certainly I for one would have been impressed to have had it as a present and kept it when I then moved onto electric trains. And I have to say there is a lot of play value with all those contents!

Good morning glad you enjoyed seeing this set in action. Maybe your right the noise is designed in and a very impressive looking locomotive in is livery. It's a great box full of items I love the station and tunnel and the card used is nice and heavyweight.

    Hi Oscar,
Intrigued to see that after all this time a ‘train set’ still hits the spot at Christmas 😂. Seriously though that is very good value and play value for £15. I’m sure the family had you opening the big box first then an inward sigh of relief when the 2-6-4 appeared 😅.
Interesting to hear that Mick, Keef and the Strolling Bones temporarily wooed you away from trains, we’ve all been there and they are still going strong.
Looking forward to the 2-6-4 video.
    Stay Safe

      @oscarpaisley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, Gordon, there was lots of giggling when the present was given and much more when opened, for £15 fun was had from the moment the set was spotted by my son and the plot was hatched. Anticipation and surprise! all good fun, I had a hand in choosing the 2-6-4 tank locomotive. But its the set that will be remembered by all of us one way or another.
      Thanks again take care.

Good evening Oscar, are we falling back to childhood? A nice inexpensive box to start! Afterwards, it's worth what it's worth ... Your 1982 catalog looks very interesting, and the beautiful 42308 steam locomotive promises us good times!

Hi Oscar, its interesting to note that these junior sets were made in Vietnam and not China. I have this set and the Paddington version, they also made a blue livery of this set for the continental market. Hornby had very well made wire spru trees made in Vietnam.

Good afternoon Oscar, what a great item, amazing how well it goes on just 3v. As someone else mentioned I bet it might stay on Super 4. I would have been pleased to get this back in the late sixties / early seventies rather than my clockwork set. A big oval too. Look forward to seeing the new tank running. All the best to you

    Hi Oscar,
I enjoyed watching a throw back to childhood. I certainly had several plastic battery train sets as a child. All good fun. They just didn't last long. The track usually giving out first. Shall we test running on the layout again using some Super 4 track? I think it might track Super 4 better than System 6/HO standard track. Lisa

This proves it! I have no interest in a cheap modern plastic Twain set but because it’s you Oscar, I LOVED IT! 😁👍 nice to find out what the problem was. Totally loved your ideas for stacking books around the track and especially the corner of the bed! I did that with our sofa. Ace! Can’t wait to see the new tank engine and get the HST out! 😁👍
I left the auto correct spelling for train in deliberate. It’s amused me it thought I meant to say it like that! 🤣👍 great stuff! This is why I don’t get a lie in on my day off! Thank you Mr Paisley. 😁👍👊😎

Hi Oscar, well that was certainly better than the usual set of socks and a Lynx Africa Gift set that I get for Christmas!
Well done for the excellent review - The future of our fantastic hobby is dependent on getting the next generation interested - I can’t wait to visit a model railway show, model shop, preserved railway and stand on the end of Platform 5 at Stafford spotting for a day once lockdown eases- but I know that 90% of others doing the same will be over 50!!
I tried desperately (!) to get my own kids interested- they learnt to read on Thomas books and we had a brilliant Brio layout! Our annual Summer hols was in a caravan in Dawlish Warren of course- however the modern units aren’t very inspiring compared to the Westerns, Peaks and Fifties that used to roar past when I was a child:-(
It’s a shame that the £15 train set isn’t linked to an App on the IPad as that’s the only way to get them interested these days...
Am I turning into Victor Meldrew????
    Best Wishes Ned

Ha ha I didn't think I would see one of those on your channel Oscar, £15 is less than half its original price. They are discontinued now so may become collectable in the future, I think I would have been tempted to send it round the high level route of your layout just to see if it would make it.
I look forward to seeing the Class 4P Tank locomotive, that looks like a nice model and should look great with some blood & custards.

That's quite some length on that centre carriage when you consider that Hornby's original HST was released with short mk3 coaches to avoid fouling lineside accessories. Interesting in that 1982 catalogue the 1st & 2nd class coaches have 7 windows but on the restaurant buffet 125 they have squeezed in the 8th window within the same space by re-tooling the window insert. I wonder if those pizza cutter wheels on the Junior Express would probably run on the old Triang-Hornby track, it certainly looks a lot of fun for the money and very modern compare dot those old Hornby clock-work sets.

    • @oscarpaisley

That was really good fun today. I wonder if your clockwork engines could run on the plastic track? I have the 1982 catalogue but it is held together with loads of sellotape and it was nice to see the back page again as mine has crumbled away. The text inside it is informative. The conveyor turned out quite different in production of you look at later catalogues.

Interesting to see what Hornby are aiming at the very young today. As you say, it's a great price, but it does look a little 'Pound-shop-toy' quality. I do like those cardboard buildings, however. Great fun! All the best. Gordon :-)

    • @oscarpaisley

    Hi Oscar
Interesting to see the variation on the layout. I think this set is aimed toward young people but as a young person I think it puts people off because of its cartoon like appearance.
The old catalogues really are brilliant, the older photo imposed printing gives a better idea of how it will look on the layout, must be the lighting.
    Hope you’re well
    Regards
    Will

Good morning William I think you right it's defiantly aimed at the very young with the design of the livery and packaging, but great fun I think. That junior set is a new aspect of playtime ..not bad for £15 though . My first set in the 60’s was a cheap one consisting of plastic track and a battery powered loco .Not as sophisticated as this one though .
I liked your reference to losing interest in the hobby at a certain age . For me it was in the late 70s ..basically girls and music were more important. Now ,in what I like to term late middle age, I seem to have returned to model railways ,albeit just through the medium of video.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good morning David, I've been told in the comments that the set was originally double that price but is now discontinued stock which Hornby Hobbies must have sold of cheap to retails. This one came from a well know budget high street household, DIY and homeware goods store. But as you say £15 it's a great box full of items discounted item or not, and is great fun at any age I could even use the batteries from my Walkman while nobody is looking...

My thought is that these battery powered sets may provide a use for too far gone rusty or corroded steel track pieces.
Rather than the usual rubbish bin a donation may be appreciated. Especially points that work mechanically but not electrically as is common with age and use.
Quite a plus for these not to rely on near new condition track.

The problem with the Hornby Junior set is you couldn’t add anything to it. A traditional train set can grow and expand over the years as its owner grows and develops their interests. With this set you can’t add extra rolling stock or track (you can’t even really vary the track plan). That really reduces the play value. The new Children’s starter models introduced by Hornby this year look like a much better introduction to the hobby

Good morning Andrew others have mentioned the new "Playtrains" being offered by Hornby Hobbies. It defiantly looks to have a few more possibilities than the Junior set. I like the remote control aspect, my son and I would have had great fun with it. Possibly the way things will go in the future with model railway control now reliable wireless communication costs have fallen so low. Digital Command Control has always looked to struggle with getting a reliable command to the chip/module/locomotive, not necessarily the power.
      Thanks again for watching.

Good video Oscar while this set is good there are some aspects of it which I think are not very good mainly the fact that nothing in this was compatible with anything from the main range of products
That 4p looks to be in great condition for its age

Good morning it must be a complicated process developing these sets for the younger end of the market. It is disappointing the lack of compatibility. Hornby Hobbies do have another range aimed at the very young "Playtrains" with a variety of expansion options but I don't think there is much compatibility with the main range. I imagine this will have a lot to do with safety issues and meeting a wide range of requirements for there planned sales territories and targeted age groups. Defiantly looking forward to running the new tank locomotive.
      Thanks again take care.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Jouef Junior wasn't OEM by FENFA

I guess at £15 Hornby aren't making any profit - amazing if they can break even at all.

Good morning I'm not sure these originally retailed at £15 from what I've been reading in the comments this set dates back a couple of years or so. It was acquired new at a well know high street thrifty type shop in England, I was thinking it was old stock that Hornby was trying clear at a very discounted rate via this chain of stores possibly others too. It does seem like quite a bundle for £15.
      Thanks again take care.

I have this for my 5 year old. Its rather fiddly for little hands to rerail. Their new kids system released later this year looks much more child friendly

It does prove a battery-powered loco has plenty of power. Just have rechargeable batteries!

    Dear Sir,
As me own layout is still far from operational, i bought to me 5 yo a plastic train, to soothe his excitement. Not as fancy as Hornby's, but it did the job, judging by his happy face.
A brazilian guy shows an older version in this video:

    Cheers from Brazil!

I´m not really a fan of when model companies do things like this to ´get children interested´ because its the sort of thing you buy but then you can´t expand of it. The regular starter sets can be expanded using items from the railroad range and my advice to anybody trying to get a child into the hobby is just start with a regular starter set and don´t faff around with cheapo things like this.

Good morning Ewan several people have mentioned the lake of expansion and or compatibility with the rest of the range as a problem. Hornby Hobbies seem to have developed yet another range aimed at the very young with expansion options but still no compatibility with the rest of there range. You may be right a starter set may be the way to go but the items are so very fragile.
      Thanks for watching take care.

Big mistake to use plastic track. I know the price needed to be kept low, but if you had standard Hornby track then Mum and Dad's thoughts might turn to "why don't we get an electric loco next?"
