Beautiful! I had this back in 1979, I got the R791 'LMS Express Passenger' set and also the LMS operating mail coach set to go with it. Great fun. Thanks for bringing back memories!😃
Good morning Oscar it's Martin from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire again, hope you are OK and well. Just watched your excellent video with your Dutchess locomotive and it's lovely coaches. As always it's a pleasure to see your wonderful railway, it takes me back to my youth, happy railway days indeed. Well it's time for my cup of tea and a toasted tea cake. Keep safe Oscar and have a good week ahead. See you next Sunday. 👍🚂
Good morning Oscar, I remember it well never actually owned this particular model. Fabulous loco especially in LMS crimson lake livery… I enjoyed the opening footage happy days back in 1977…😼👍🏻
Nice loco! I still remember this coming out, though I didn't buy one at the time as funds were short, I was a staunch GWR fan, plus I'd already been given a somewhat battered old Hornby Dublo 8P City. I'm pretty sure I have one in the loft somewhere, though, acquired as part of a still unopened and unused set. It's funny that Hornby chose to make the workable lamps indicate a class C perishable train, rather than an express.
Up late again 33rd to like and then it’s a midland day. Brilliant I have that loco in a cabinet in the front room it’s hardly run, ready for when I get the track up in the attic. It will happen, I’ve been collecting the 57’ coaches too after looking through over Christmas I found I need to stop buying them. It’s amazing how many are available still with boxes and made in Britain. Thanks again Oscar well done lad. David. 🚊
I remember buying the Duchess of Sutherland in 1977 and being so disappointed that I returned it. I had super 4 track with a very steep gradient which magnahesion coped with but the tender drive wouldn't look at it, the loco barely climbed without a train! I've had a couple of tender drives since on more level Peco code 100 but somehow never really settled to them so the Hornby Coronation I converted to loco drive and the Hornby Evening Star I sold and bought a Bachmann version instead.
I got the Duchess Of Sutherland for Christmas. but not sure of the year I got it. I still have it, sadly not working at the moment. But hopefully I'll get round to getting it going again! The handrail knobs always 'popped' out of the body a little even when new!
Great video this morning Oscar, great range of models here, I do have the Duchess of Sutherland myself, I got one myself of eBay a few year ago but on the ebay listing there wasn’t just the duchess loco there was 4 of the LMS coaches with it, all that cost me around £60, Duchess of Sutherland has always been a favourite of mine, I have been very lucky to see the real thing running on the mainline more than once, great bike and running session here Oscar, keep up the great work.
Hi Oscar With regard to the wobbly tender, time stamp 7:15 shows the tyre near your right thumb to not be sat flush. I use Antwalte Tyres off ebay for my Hornby Locos, never had any waddling since. Lovely to see the Duchess in mint condition, although it is a shame it wasn't such a deep red as the coaches and catalogue suggested it could be. I'd thought of replacing the tender motor with one of the older silver seal / fleischmann motors, just to compare performance. I suppose a swap with a black 5 tender just to compare would work. I know it's not as popular but the early Hornby ringfield, like yours here with the extra bearing, was also lovely quality. I have a class 25 that is just as quiet and smooth running as a new model today. All the best Will
Thumbs up for Antwalte from me too. However he is currently in dispute with eBay and they will not pass the orders through. He hopes to have an alternative solution by the end of the month.
@@stephensimmonds184 He sells too much for ebay to be fee/taxless I think they have to declare his earning to HMRC or something like that. I can't wait to order a heap of spares from him when he's up and running again, I've kept the shopping list waiting!
Hi Oscar, Beautiful Duchess and, as usual, atmospheric intro footage. I have one in very nice condition and one a bit play worn. Sadly you need to be down low, dimmed lights and a bit of power to appreciate the lights. A very nice maroon session 👏 Gordon
Hi Oscar, Very Desirable Models Indeed - I like the Hornby Silver Seal Models, they have the Balance Right between Detail & Functionality imo with the Silver Running Gear being the Icing on the Cake. Unfortunately Either of these 2 have managed to Elude me for Now as Decent Examples Hold Their Price Very Well, and the Cheaper Ones could well be a Stretch for my Repair Skills or Need A Replacement Part that’s Hard to Find and a Kings Ransom when ya do Find it 😄😉 Excellent Topic & Running Sesh Cheers 🍻
A good Running Session Oscar -I find it very hard to do when your running 2 Locos running next to each other - have both of the front of the Locos level with each other!!! 😉🤔🚂🚂🚂
Beautiful engine. If your railway didn't have so many sets of points, you wouldn't end up forgetting about one set. Try taking out the sets of points on the main running tracks, and just have the ones leading into sidings and the two turntables. You might have better results.
Really nice loco . I always fancied one , especially when it had the painted finish as Duchess of Abercorn from 1980 . I was disappointed in the finish of this one , frankly finding it not as good as my Glossy Princess Elizabeth of 1971 . It’s interesting to note that the tender lining goes mostly to the edge , which is as it should . Much better than the Red Five last week .
Hi Oscar, I have finally gotten to make a comment after watching these two splendid locos and their coaches running? The "see through" wheels on the Duchess look great as it speeds around it's circuit? I had not realized that there were British locos of that era, ever even made with working lamps on the buffer beam? What a pity that they are not that easy to see? I was always more interested in the Transcontinental range with their working headlights? Both of these locos are running very well on the Series 3 track, apart from the small mishap on the (forgotten) Station points? "Can't win them all", as the saying goes? There are a lot of points on the layout to set correctly, so I think that we should forgive you? It would probably be nice to protect the layout points with an isolated section of track just before them, so that the power is only passed through the point blades (Or a relay attached to the solenoid), when they are 'set' correctly? But that would be a hard job to do on the series 3 or Super 4 track? A bit easier to manage perhaps with System 6 track, if you are using Nylon fish-plates for the isolation ? My Grandson and I , have done this on his layout with the later type of track.. But we have had to pay a lot of attention to the wheel spacing on our earlier (1950's and 60's) locos and rolling stock that are made to run on the early tracks? ( A lot of the deep wheel flanges can be a problem on System 6 too)? I think that your Series 3 layout (and your earlier Super 4 layout) are the best solution for the earlier models to run "trouble free" through the points? I really enjoy watching the trains that you choose to run? They always evoke such great memories of our early days in the world of Tri-ang and Hornby trains.... Thank you again for sharing this era of wonderful models with us.. I personally enjoy watching them, much better than the latest model trains that are available nowadays?
I have this locomotive. Not to run but as a model....... Question. Why are the rail tracks CHROME and not RUST . Peeps put so much effort and time into their work (which is amazing) only to have CHROME RAILS?
Sorry if the following comment is a bit negative, but the Duchess of Sutherland was the model that ended (for about 20 years) my participation in 'the hobby' and stop buying "Hornby" products ! ! ! Why (I hear you ask), well here is the 'List' of defects...... 1/ The copper eletrical connector never worked 'reliably' making it stop running at any time. 2/ The 'Cab number' was printed with a bit missing as well as a blob attached ! 3/ The 'Tender' top clip broke allowing it to come off when picking it up. 4/ The Six large 'Driving Wheels' (on the engine) crumbled due to their 'powder metalurgy' failing 5/ The front pony truck kept derailing. 6/ The front loco lamps never worked realistically and the bulb burnt out fairly quickly. 7/ The boiler handrails were never flush with the engine and were visably not 'all the way in'. As I said I stopped buying Hornby locos after this model disapointed me so much but I finally got it repaired (new set of wheels and a service) around 1998 but it never ran consistantly ever again so maybe You 'dodged a bullet' by not getting one at the time ! I was 'So' looking forward to this model but the disapointment was enough for me to change over to Lima for my next (xmas) purchase, which was an 'N' gauge BR class 31 goods train set which got stuck on a set of points (whilst I was out of the room) and melted it's motor and body (so nothing left to save/repair) and as 'the last straw' I never bothered buying anything til the late 90's when (due to being single and earning good money) I bought the last of the margate loco as well as the first of the chinese ones. At the same time, I realised that I really liked the tri-ang hornby years and so got into collecting roughly the same as featured on your chanel, which I like a lot, cheers !
Here's a list of solutions: 1- Clean the connectors, spring, and the pivot area of the pony truck (I put a drop of oil there too). Also clean axles on loco and tender. 2, 3, 4 all unfortunate but certainly not representative of 99% of models. 5- just pull the wheels off and push them back together until theyr're the same distance apart as the others that are ok 6-clean axles, wheels and contacts should've done the trick, also making sure the little wiper pick up was making contact. 7- I see this and sometimes its just a heavy thumb had put a bend in the metal. Take it fully off and make sure it's straight. I'm glad you got the railway bug back, such a shame the Duchess and N 31 were such disappointments. The last of the margate locos didn't have many issues but certainly 1 standout decrease of quality in the commutator production. With a bit of tinkering you can get anything Margate to run sweet as a nut!

Great to see the c1977 variant by 1978 part of the valve gear was replaced by a plastic part much to my horror when received as a birthday present.
losing the bearing on the motor faceplate was also a shame, but not awful
I think the one I got for Christmas has the plastic pistion rod/cross head as well. Never liked it been made in plastic!

I look for your comment on every video Oscar makes, dunno why
Another lovely video.

Still got mine from when i was little, i think my dad vanished it giving it the lovely gloss finish it appears to have in the catalogue. Thanks Dad.

Superb loco again today Oscar. I do like the Duchess class but I prefer it in British Railways livery.
I have the ‘77 in a separate box and the full ‘78 set, which is just spectacular
The colour was called LMS crimson lake. Lake is supposed to be something to do with the pigment.
Great vid tks for the effort.
