I have flown an actual P-51D and must say that the IL-2 version of it is modeled much closer to the real P-51 than is the aircraft in DCS. Nice tutorial for the IL-2 in game version.
In many cases the Bendix radio compass is not necessary for normal navigation, but I would not dismiss it so quickly as a NAV aid only for those with bad navigation skills. Radio compasses on both allied, and German aircraft are very useful for navigating home on the deck when you can't figure out where you are so easily due to not being able to see landmarks and terrain features. If you are low on fuel, wounded, and / or damaged, and at low altitude; you might not be able to climb enough to figure it out in time. Thus; I personally recomended taking them when they are available as a backup.
I do not dismiss them as "just for dudes who cant find shit". But often they come with massive antennas as well. After weeks and months on the new map, navigation is no problem anymore.
@@SheriffsSimShack I didn't figure you did actually do, but it could come accross that way with the way your worded that part of the video. I have by the way been in the situation I described above before with the 51. On the deck, leaking fuel, and wounded. Ran out of fuel just as I touched down on the runway. Had I not taken the Bendix; I would have ended up in a field somewhere instead of on the runway. No way I would have been able to climb enough to find my position before being out of fuel, and being bloodied would have made spotting landmarks difficult as well. Perhaps I should not have let myself get shot up, and then I would not have needed it. :P Just food for thought for anyone trying to decide whether or not to take it.
It is very useful when you're stuck at tree top level and unable to climb from damage. When you can't see shit, and your only reference is your general heading home, you can fly until it picks up a beacon.
Yeah I agree sometimes it's quite helpful if your trying to be sneaky, or have limited time. I never find them nessesary but they are usefull as long as they don't slow you down too much. The engine timer saving RPM also works for 2850 value, combat power time is doubled and there is almost no penalty to climb rate. I always use it at the start of the sortie to climb.
Thanks a lot for the video. Im still learning how to properly use the Mustang, and the vast majority of my sorties have been very succesful, but on the occasions in which things went wrong, they went 100% badly, with me getting into nasty accelerated stalls, spins and even inverted spins
I love the mustang in this game. Although I’ve noticed that sometimes it takes more than half my ammo to shoot an AI plane down. While getting consistent hits too.
That's so funny, the "Runstang"! Always cracks me up when guys that are use to do something themselves try to make it a negative thing when their opponents do it. Most of the Germans planes use "extending" all day long and as soon as a plane is added that can actually do the same thing to them it becomes "running away". LoL
Hi Sheriff, I just found your videos a few weeks ago and love your content. If you're ever looking for a new video idea, I'd love to get a more in depth review and strategy for aiming.
Darn is Sheriff the manaul oil radiator trick was suppose to be a secret ;) lol I remember in the first week finding out about it through testing and telling Scharfi about it, and her telling me about the 2700 rpm trick for top speed on the deck. So we both got extra speed out of the Mustang. The DC K4 can go faster then the mustang if you close it's water rads, but you overheat so quickly it's not even worth it.
Thanks for another great video Sheriff, I've been spending some time trying to master the 51D. Do you mind if I ask what the music track name was for the intro?
Awesome stuff! I looked through your tutorials and could not find this - any chance you can do a tutorial on setting up controls and how some settings differ between planes? Definitely not only for noobies but think for those of us that are fairly new with only just a general knowledge and could use some help getting to the next level.
@@SheriffsSimShack I thought that might be an issue, but I think it could be done fairly efficiently given your experience and talent for tutorials. Afterall, it should attract the new players to your channel. There are some out there now but they may not be as comprehensive as this could be in my opinion. Maybe two parts if needed?
Question... Manual Oil Radiator? I can switch it between auto/manual, but can not adjust it. Did IL-2 program that feature out of the Plane after this video was made? I know some planes allowed the switch from auto/manual , but all the "manual" did was to fully open the radiator shutters, it was an emergency control, in case the auto feature was damaged.
I can never reach above 400 km/h even at 3000rpm. I have mixture to RUN, no flaps, no wind, what am I doing wrong? This is the most difficult plane to fly in the sim for me, and because I can't reach high speed, it's so easy to stall during turns.
Excellent, thank you. I had asked you on another of your videos regarding your very low approach on final, if this is your preference or was this the typical landing method during combat conditions? I would think a somewhat steeper approach would allow for a engine hiccup/failure during those last crucial moments of the approach. Would like to know your reason for this very low final, appreciated, and thanks again.
There is no random engine failure in Il2. But regardless of that. The 51 does not like sudden change of AoA and a shallow angle reduces the risk of stall at the flare out.
@@SheriffsSimShack I wasn't aware of that, thanks. The other video of yours I had seen was either a 109 or 190 in which you used the same very low approach; I thought maybe a method of avoiding detection when landing with an enemy possibly following you back to base? Just was curious; I had seen a few others use this same very low, flat approach as well. As long as you land intact, I suppose it's all the same! Of course, in the war the engines, especially late war German with the quality issues, were not always a casual matter regarding reliability, and minor combat damage finding you out at just the wrong moment! :)
use the direction for your landing others are taking off from. Meaning if spawning aircraft are taking off from east to west, land that direction too. This makes it much easier to take off and land if you don't have traffic from the other side.
I can get to 610 km/h at sea level, but at 8000m i cant go faster than 475 km/h. This is with 105 octane fuel and 25% fuel, perfectly trimmed, full throttle and 3000 rpm. With 2700 rpm the P-51 is even slower. Is there a reason for this? The supercharger is set to automatic and the fuel mixture is ‚run‘. The plane should be faster at these heights
@@abdulrhmanmygames5633 I play in VR and love it for the immersion. It does leave you at a resolution disadvantage unless you have a HP Reverb or one of the high end sets maybe are good from what I hear.
@@abdulrhmanmygames5633 Most people either use Track IR or some other form of head tracking software, or they use VR.
